It was that time of year again. Another year, come and gone, and yet another reminder of what Octavio had lost ten years ago. If his wife, Oceana, was still alive, then today would’ve been their fifteenth anniversary.
Octavio always had a special tradition that he followed on this day. Every year he’d take a Trailmon into Whitewater in the afternoon, and head down to the nearest beach as evening approached. Once reached the edge of the water, the ShogunOctomon would light a small candle, nestled into a small, wooden boat, and prepared to let the boat sail away on the ocean currents. This was an old tradition for honoring the dead in his hometown of Mariner Bay, and for all the Xros General knew that he was possibly one of the few people still alive that followed this tradition.
However, before he could place the boat in the water, Octavio paused as he recalled the memories of the life he’d shared with Oceana, starting with the day they first met.
Sixteen years ago…
An 18-year-old Octavio Kelp, still a fresh recruit in Mariner Bay’s local militia, was using his current period of shore leave to enjoy himself as he sat on a public bench and played a guitar that had been modified for an Octopus Digimon like him to be able to use. As he played, Octavio would gently sing a song that had been passed down in his family for generations. No one in the family could remember how it originated, but the song itself somehow managed to survive all these years.
“I have a dream
I hope will come true,
That you’ll be here with me,
And I’ll be here with you.
I wish that the earth,
Sea, and the sky up above,
Will send me someone to love.”
“That’s a beautiful song.” An unknown voice called out from behind Octavio once he had finished singing. The sudden comment ended up startling Octavio, and the ShogunOctomon jumped up from the bench and ended up dropping his guitar as he faceplanted onto the ground. Octavio would try to act cool as he got up, but the faint hint of a blush gave away his embarrassment over his little accident.
Once ha was back on his feet (tentacles?), Octavio would use his two clawed tentacles to brush himself off as he turned around to face his mysterious audience, which turned out to be a Ranamon who seemed to be roughly the same age as him. “Oh, yeah. That was a song that’s been in my family a long time. Please, uh, don’t read into the lyrics too much.”
The Ranamon giggled at Octavio’s flustered behavior, before reaching down to pick up the fallen guitar and hand it back to Octavio. “Well, I can see why it’s still around, then. I believe this is yours?”
“Oh, yeah. It wasn’t easy to find a guitar that was meant for tentacles instead of fingers, so thank you for picking it up for me. I’m Octavio, by the way. Octavio Kelp.” Octavio nervously said, unused to having a conversation with someone as beautiful as this Ranamon was. He could only hope he wasn’t embarrassing himself here.
“Well, Mr. Octavio Kelp, it’s nice to formally meet you. My name’s Oceana.” The Ranamon replied with a warm smile as she held a hand out to Octavio. The ShogunOctomon briefly hesitated before shaking the outstretched hand but if Oceana noticed this, she didn’t say anything about it.
“*Ahem* It’s nice to meet you too, Miss Oceana.” Octavio formally replied. The Octopus Digimon’s brain was working double-time to try and keep him from freaking out, but he managed to force out the thought that was now floating around in his head. “I don’t have much time left on my current shore leave before I have to return to duty, but on my next leave, would you possibly be willing to… go out to lunch with me?”
The question caused Oceana’s smile to visibly warm up until it was almost as bright as a sun. “That sounds like a date. I’ll hold you to that, Mister Kelp~.”
With that, the Ranamon gave Octavio a warm wave as she started walking off, while Octavio was both mentally celebrating and freaking out over what he’d just done. Yet somehow, he didn’t think he was gonna regret this at all.
One year later…
Today was the happiest day of Octavio’s life. The ShogunOctomon had just gotten married to the love of his life, the Ranamon he’d asked out all those months ago. The wedding had gone off without a hitch, and now the newlyweds were making the most of the wedding reception. It wasn’t long into the reception before the two lovebirds stood up to sing (the Ranamon holding the much smaller ShogunOctomon in her arms as they sang).
“I have a dream I hope will come true,”
“That you’ll grow old with me,“
“And I’ll grow old with you.”
“We thank the earth,
Sea, and the sky too,
I will always love you.
I will always love you.
I will always... love you.”
As they finished the last lines of the song, Oceana happily spun around with her new husband in her arms, the two of them warmly gazing into each other’s eyes as they spun.
Present Day…
Octavio wiped away the tears in his eyes that formed as he remembered the precious moments of his time with Oceana. The Xros General silently cursed Leviamon for tearing apart his family as he finally placed the wooden boat in the water and pushed it forward until it drifted off on the ocean current, sailing further and further away until it eventually disappeared from sight. Once the boat had disappeared, rain started drizzling down as if the sky itself was also crying from the ShogunOctomon’s grief.
Octavio paid no attention to the rain, merely standing in silence until he noticed that he no longer felt the raindrops hitting his head. Octavio turned around in confusion, only to find Cecilia standing over him with an umbrella in her hand. His daughter had followed her father all the way to Whitewater in order to support him, and Octavio was reminded that he hadn’t entirely lost Oceana. Her greatest gift, their daughter, was still here with him, and he mustn’t forget that.
The Rubescemon didn’t say a single word and merely used her free arm to bring her father in for a hug. Together, both father and daughter stood together as they grieved for their lost family.
