Hideo encounters his first digimon while exploring an interesting rundown house, and has a fateful encounter with a tamer and their digimon…Participants: Hayashi Hideo & ricochet-Stacy ’s Mystery Tamer
”Oh ho ho, what are you?” Hideo said, voice trilling in his throat as he stepped over the threshold onto the property. The fence of the house had long since collapsed in places, corrugated metal covered in rust over what used to be matte black spraypaint. The metal pinged under Hideo’s feet as he cross to the house proper.
It was two stories tall with a sizeable yard, now overgrown with vegetation. The bottom floor looked more like the skeleton of what a house should be. The door was rotted out and swung freely on broken hinges. The windows were busted ages ago, and a large section of the wall had just buckled and fallen intward, making the house look almost like it was raised on stilts. The entire house was blackly painted, like it was trying to hide in the shadows. But atop that black paint were bright white and yellow exclamations in both japanese and english. And, it appeared, several other languages Hideo didn’t know at all. The most prominent was an incoherent scrawl that gave the house its name, ”Non-Arrest. Blackmail. Attack House.” No matter what people painted all over the house, these words seemed to be permanent fixtures, never erased. It had become the house’s impromptu name. Hideo’s lips curved into a smile sort of against his will, excited energy fidgeting down his arms.
The red-headed boy pulled out his phone, snapping several photos of the building, including a few selfies. Then he opened a notes app and crossed it off his “to see” list. A compendium of famous places to see while he was in Shibuya visiting his aunt and uncle for the summer. This was today’s brilliant encounter.
”This is absolutely nuts! What else have people written?” Hideo whispered to nobody, scooting around the sides of the house. ”...Okoyami Matsuo, 1994…Don’t look, dead inside…Lille, 2002…Planes light up the night sky…” Some of the graffiti made sense. Most of it didn’t. Even more was just emojis next to names, kids brave enough to leave their mark. Hideo’s fingers knew what he’d be doing before his brain caught up, and soon a bright white paint pen was in his hand, the boy almost giggling in glee as he leaned forward to start scribbling ‘Hayashi Hideo, 2022’ onto the wall. He’d need a clever or cryptic message, if he wanted his name to not get written over, but this was a good start.
Hideo was so entranced in writing on the outside of the building that he didn’t hear the clattering of a tire tread from inside the house, nor notice the pairs of eyes watching him through those broken windows…

Mandrake drove the vintage convertible through the streets of Shibuya. It had been handy that he and Lothar had been able to acquire everything needed for them to make their vehicle street legal in the Human World. That and they found a Trailmon that had a cargo hold going to Shibuya so he figured might as well bring the car. The disguised Wizardmon drove calmly down the streets when an alarmed squeak came from the back seat. Coming to a stop Mandrake turned toward what looked like a five year old human dressed like a wizard minus a hat and dark blonde hair. "What's wrong, Circe?" Mandrake asked concerned something had upset the emotionally frail rookie in the backseat.
"I sense a digimon, Dad, but something feels off." Circe quietly said not knowing how to better explain it. The girl had inherited Mandrake's telepathy and since she wasn't using a holosuit her telepathic abilities weren't limited. Before Mandrake could speak up Circe then said "Wait. I sense a human too. This doesn't feel right." Circe was visibly shaking now.
"What direction is it coming from, Circe?" Mandrake gently asked so as to avoid upsetting her further and the child pointed some distance ahead of them without saying a word. Nodding Mandrake turned back around and started the car again driving for some time before he they spotted an old two story house. They were at the wrong side to notice the human and as Mandrake came to a stop he could sense the presences of a human and digimon too.
Looking to Lothar who nodded the pair climbed out of the car with Circe hesitantly following and grabbing Mandrake's gloved hand while Lothar locked up the car and brought the top up so they wouldn't find unwanted people climbing in the car. Though at the back of the house they could see words that were very confounding there as well including the name of the place. "Non-Arrest. Blackmail. Attack House?" Lothar said in a perplexed tone before the disguised Leomon looked over at Mandrake who also looked equally perplexed.
Circe began tugging on Mandrake's arm in earnest eager to get moving but said nothing otherwise. Something felt bad and she wanted to find the human and get away from here. Noticing how uncomfortable Circe was Mandrake said "Perhaps we should find this human as fast as possible in case the digimon around here proves to be unfriendly." Lothar nodded in silent agreement before the trio began making their way to the front of the house.

Hideo was ignorant of the converging forces. His attention was entirely on the strokes of his paint pen, leaving sterling white lines on the side of the house. He scrawled his name in kanji, making sure his handwriting looked appropriately boy-ish. Nobody was likely to mistake Hideo as a girl’s name, but guys never wrote their names in soft, flowing kanji or put cute little add ons next to the letter forms. It was always efficient, sort of messy, and a little burtish looking. So that’s how Hideo worked to make his signature look. He mimicked his dad’s, mostly.
Inside the house, eyes gleamed as little rodents on wheels began to move closer to the boy. They chittered somewhat mischievously, “Well it is called the Attack House, right?” “Agreed, somebody needs to do the attacking,” “Me! Me! Let me do it!”
Hideo lifted his head at the exclamation, quotation on the side of the house forgotten as he tried to find the excited voice. He’d been pretty sure that the house was empty, but he’d never done a thorough inspection. If somebody was living here, he might want to pack it up and high tail it outta there. He could always come back. “Hello?” he said, casting his voice into the house. He capped his pen as it disappeared back into his pocket. He stepped away from the wall, crossing over to an open window and peering inside. The interior was dark and dank, smelling faintly of mildew. Years exposed to the elements probably led to fungus growing all over this house. Hideo instinctively tugged on the hem of his shimmery blue shirt until it covered his nose and mouth. “Anyone inside?” he said loudly, eyes casting around as he climbed over the window ledge and humphed! Into the building. Oddly, there wasn’t a bunch of dust all over the floor. In fact, the ground was covered in little wheel tracks. “A wheelbarrow? A chair?” Hideo squatted down to inspect the markings on the ground that indicated this place was frequently rolled through. “Weird…”
As he lowered himself, he could’ve sworn he saw something move on the other side of the house, causing his head to prick up. Hideo shook his head. “You’re letting this house spook you, Hideo. Man up!” He clapped both hands against his face, the sound perfectly covering a small shape rolling across the floor stealthily. Now there were four pairs of eyes slowly narrowing at the hapless human who was knelt down in their living room.

As Mandrake, Lothar, and Circe made their way to the front of the house both Mandrake and Circe became telepathically aware that there was more than one digimon presence but how many was unknown at this time. If Mandrake dropped his disguise he could probably search out all the minds in a moment but, for now, it was best to remain disguised and he knew it.
The family of three soon made it in front of the house only to see someone fairly young climb in through the window. Not good. Chances are this human had no idea what danger it was in. Now there was no time to lose as Mandrake, Lothar, and Circe made their way to the window realizing it was just barely wide enough for Mandrake to fit. "Lothar, head in through the front door. Circe and I will head in through the window." Mandrake said with Circe whimpering but saying nothing. While she didn't want to be any where near this house it was clear that an innocent human could easily be hurt or killed if the digimon she and Mandrake were sensing were of the unfriendly kind. As Lothar silently made his way to the front door Mandrake looked at Circe before he said "It's okay, Circe. We'll get to the human and then get out of here as fast as possible."
Circe hesitantly released her grip on Mandrake's hand as he climbed into the window scrunching his face in disgust at the unpleasant smell of mold before touching down inside a room that looked surprisingly clean given how lousy a shape the overall building was in. Circe, meanwhile, had effortlessly climbed into the window and hopped to the floor her boots not making even a sound as she gracefully landed before walking up to Mandrake and taking his hand again.
Then Circe pointed quietly at the floor and Mandrake looked down seeing the markings before the human's presence was felt. Looking across the room Mandrake saw a teen with orangish hair examining the tracks on the floor and made his way over to the young man. As Mandrake spoke Circe tucked herself behind Mandrake tightening the grip on his hand making Mandrake glad she had a death grip on his bionic arm for she was stronger than her appearance suggested. "Excuse me, young man, but why would you be in a place that is clearly dangerous?" Mandrake asked calmly not knowing how the teen would react to an unknown person behind him.
Meanwhile Lothar had made his way inside the house and was walking down the hall looking in the various rooms as he went so he wouldn't miss spotting Mandrake or Circe knowing the two were unlikely to be separated from one another. He was also on guard as this place was making him uneasy and he was not one to ignore his instincts.

Hideo screamed. The house had been feeling tense, with things jumping around just outside of his vision. He could feel the darkness somehow creeping closer, and the air had a thickness that almost felt like static electricity. Hideo had been telling himself he was just over-reacting. This was nothing and nobody was out to get him. He was just a little on edge because the house was spooky. So, when a man in a suit jacket suddenly spoke, a man that Hideo had neither seen nor heard approach, the younger boy screeched like only the lungs of youth could screech, and leapt to his feet, wildly backpedaling until his back hit a firm wall.
“Why would you sneak up on someone like that!? In a creepy abandoned house!?” Hideo was yelling and breathing heavily as his heart hammered against his chest. “Jeez, you scared me half to death!” Hideo panted slowly, rubbing his hands over his face. “I was going to draw the building, then I saw all the graffiti and wanted to…” he paused, eyeing the weird man and the little girl cowering behind him. He didn’t look like law enforcement of any kind, so the redhead continued, “...leave my own mark. But I kept hearing noises from inside. Was that you?” Hideo looked around, trying to square this top-hat with the grungy, dirty building. These two didn’t seem dirty, but that didn’t mean they weren’t squatting or hiding out here. “Do you…live here?” Hideo asked.
He would never get his answer, though. As he stepped away from the wall, he heard another scritching sound from down a hallway inside the building. If the old man had been making the noises before, what was this new sound? “More? Hello?” But as Hideo turned and began to walk down the hallway to investigate, a voice shouted out from the shadows.
“Stop them before they get away! Attack House! Attack House!”
Hideo’s head whipped to the side, and through a half-open door in the hall, a rodent like creature was staring down Hideo, pointing at it. It looked like it had a cannon strapped to its back, and when it yelled at him, the opening of the canon began to glow.
“Junk Shot!”
The canon erupted into a burst of light and Hideo dove to the side without thinking, crashing through a rotted wall as something sailed overhead, punching a dent into the far wall. Hideo watched as the impact site….stuttered? Glitched? There were little squares floating around the space where the wall had been impacted, floating like little video articles that were out of place. It made Hideo’s head hurt to look at it too long.
The single blast from the cannon-rat seemed to wake up all the others, as three more cannon rats started to appear, hiding in various corners. One even poked its head down from the top of a staircase that led upstairs. “Are these yours!?” Hideo shouted to the man and his cowering daughter.

When Hideo screamed Circe screamed too tucking herself fully behind Mandrake clearly terrified. She was now clutching his back instead of his hand while shaking. "I'm sorry for scaring you like that but this place is dangerous. My family and I don't live here but we saw you climb into the house so we went in after you hoping you wouldn't get hurt." Mandrake said trying to calm the young ones. The trickiest part would be how to get out without dealing with the digimon in the house.
Meanwhile Lothar had heard the screams from Hideo and Circe and started running in the direction of the screams seeing what appeared to be Junkmon making there way to a nearby room. Chances were that was were the screaming came from. Meanwhile Mandrake, with Circe still clinging to him, followed Hideo before spotting the Junkmon firing its cannon. Fortunately Hideo managed to scramble away but the intense noise caused Circe to release her grip from Mandrake and freak out running for a wall before climbing it so fast it would of made Peter Parker jealous before stopping on the ceiling shivering.
Knowing after this was over Mandrake would have to coax his traumatized daughter down from there he responded to Hideo's question as he said "They are not with me but this has just made things more complicated."
As he was just getting ready to deactivate his holosuit Lothar made his presence known. Hideo would notice the disguised Leomon was a six foot eight man mountain and proceeded to kick the Junkmon in the back though it would be unlikely to cause the creature permanent harm. Though it would be quite the surprise for Junkmon. Seeing Lothar, Mandrake smiled before he said "Nice timing Lothar. It seems the locals in here aren't all that friendly."
Looking around and not seeing Circe he asked "Mandrake, where is Circe?" Mandrake silently answered by using his staff which was disguised as a walking stick with some kind of large jewel on top to point to were Circe had taken refuge causing Lothar to look up and said "Oh."
