"A... fighting competition?"
It had been a little over a year since Synn and Renna had gotten together romantically. Things were moving at a decent pace for the two of them, a pace that both were happy with. Sure, they both still worked as fighters at the Colosseum, but now the two were sharing a studio apartment together in the city, and they have both been improving their baking skills over time. Renna even got a part-time job at one of the bakeries in Terminus City, helping to scrape enough money to fulfill their ultimate dream: to buy their own traveling bakery and explore the world with it.
Which is exactly why Synn had signed up for a big-name fighting tournament coming to Terminus this week, as evident by the flyer he was currently holding. "I was walking home from the Colosseum when I saw this flyer: 'The Champion Clash,' a fighting tournament exclusively for Champion level Digimon. And you will not believe what the grand prize is." With a thrilled expression, he turned the flyer over to show his Renamon girlfriend, whose eyes widened.
"Th-they're offering this many bits!?!?" Renna asked with a gasp.
"This is a perfect opportunity for us, Renna... if I win this tournament, then we'll finally have enough to buy the traveling bakery. Our dream will soon become a reality!"
"Do you really think you can win this, Synn?" Renna asked with a concerned expression. "This tournament's inviting countless Champion level fighters from all across the Digital World. Some of your opponents could be leagues ahead of you, of both of us!"
"What I'm hearing is that you're worried I'll be pummeled like a pancake," Synn responded with a grin.
"Of course I am; I know you. You never give up or quit, even when you're ahead. ESPECIALLY when you're ahead. I just don't want you to get in over your head just for some money."
"It's not just about the money, Renna; winning this will mean a fresh start for us. We can open up the bakery and finally leave this city, explore all different kinds of places in the Digital World, just like we're always talking about. Or was all that talk about wanting to see Ys for yourself nothing but empty words?"
Renna crossed her arms and sighed... she knew there would be no talking her boyfriend out of this. "Well, it is to help our dream... just promise me that you'll give it your best out there, alright? And don't be disappointed if you happen to lose in your very first fight."
"Renna, I'm Synn Symbare; I never lose."
Well, Synn had a point: he never lost. For the first two days of the Champion Clash, Synn had successfully beaten any opponent he had come across with ease. Sure, there were some struggles here and there, and the opponents Synn went up against were much stronger than what he was used to. But in the SymbareAngoramon's mind, they were just a fun challenge to help increase his overall skill and prowess, challenges that he overcame in the end. Synn and Renna were both thrilled; it was down to just him and a Turuiemon now... one more opponent to go, and that prize -- along with their dream -- was going to be theirs for the taking! But there was one caveat standing in the way, as Synn was about to find out.
Synn had decided to take the scenic route to the Colosseum that day... he felt like he was on cloud nine, and wanted to take in all that sunshine for himself before the big moment. He was close to beginning to skip and whistle a tune on the way there before he heard a voice coming from a nearby alleyway:
"Synn Symbare, I presume?"
Synn stopped and turned towards the source of the voice. Out floating from the darkness came a feminine-looking Digimon, one with sort of a "gothic Lolita" appearance. Her skin white as snow, her lips black as night, with a jellyfish-style hat and a red mask: a Thetismon. "I thought that was you; there aren't many SymbareAngoramons in this area, so I assumed it would be this easy to find you eventually."
Synn raised an eyebrow. "And who are you supposed to be?" he asked, crossing his arms.
"Just call me Kanna, darling," Thetismon said with a smile that was meant to be "cute. "All you need to know is that I hold a lot of power in this city, and that I need you to lose today's fight."
Synn blinked in surprise. "You want me to do what?"
"Oh, don't misunderstand darling; this isn't for personal reasons. You've grown quite popular during the Champion Clash, even more than you were originally. So much so that the bet against you is so lucrative. But here's the skinny: the skill gap between you and the Turuiemon is in-quantifiable; you would pummel them if you tried. So we need you to not try; a lot of money is riding on the outcome. Do as I request, and you'll earn half of our winnings... more than double the amount of the grand prize."
The SymbareAngoramon's Digicore skipped a beat; double the grand prize? For losing? "W-Well, uh, it is certainly a... lot to think about, Ms. Kanna, ma'am. I will consider your request."
"Yeah, that's not gonna work; the contest is in an hour, and I need an answer now. Yes or no?"
"Well, I... I suppose I would be a fool to turn something like this down. So yes, I accept your request." Synn would then offer a hand-shake to Kanna, who accepted it with one of her jellyfish arms.
Kanna smiled. "Very good. My associates and I will be watching you today from the stands. Best of luck to you, Mr. Symbare... and don't let us down. You'll regret it if you do." The Thetismon would then exit the alleyway and float down the sidewalk, making her own way to the Colosseum.
Synn couldn't help but smirk as he watched Kanna leave, putting his hands on his hips. "Being paid double just to lose... this is certainly an unexpected twist."
"LADIIIIIIIES AAAAAAND GENTLEMEEEEEEN!" The announcer MCmon spoke into his microphone, his voice booming all across the stadium A SymbareAngoramon and a Turuiemon each standing on opposite sides of the arena. "This is the moment you've all been waiting for: the final fight in the grand Champion Claaaaash! Our finalists have fought long and hard to reach this point... and ironically enough, they're both rabbit Digimon! Give it up for Synn Symbaaaaare! And Taury Turuiiiiiiie!"Both contestants smiled and waved when their names were called out; both had gained traction for almost effortlessly winning their fights before this moment, so to see the two deck it out was way beyond hyped. As he was looking in the audience, Synn and Renna managed to lock eyes with each other. Synn smiled, as he remembered what he was doing this for. Just one match, and we'll be on our way, my love.
"Remember: this is purely a combat tournament. Specific named attacks are prohibited, as this contest is all about letting your natural combat ability determine the outcome. First one to be knocked out or to go out-of-bounds will be disqualified! Now... are our contestants ready! TO! RUMBLEEEE?!" MCmon asked, causing the crowd to cheer more. "3! 2! 1! FIGHT!"
Synn and Taury wasted no time dashing towards each other, with Synn delivering a kick that clashed with Taury's starting punch, creating enough of a push-back wave to knock the MCmon off his stage. They locked eyes with each other, the spirit of competition overflowing in both their expressions before they each went all out. Their moves were so fast, just as fast as their evasive maneuvers and their blocks. It was difficult to make out what was going on between the two of them!
It took some time, but eventually Synn got sloppy. He was caught off guard when Taury was right there, waiting for a blow right to the SymbareAngoramon's face, launching him right over to the edge of the arena. A bit more and he would've been out of bounds. Synn struggled to pick himself up as he watched the Turuiemon walking more and more towards him. He remembered the deal: he just had to let himself lose, and he'd get double the earnings that he would otherwise.
You never give up or quit, even when you're ahead. ESPECIALLY when you're ahead.
...just promise me that you'll give it your best out there, alright?
Synn's eyes widened as he heard Renna's voice play back in his head. What would she think if he gave up this easily? Would she accept that Synn just turned tail and gave up, simply for more money? Or would she lose all respect that she had for him? But I already made a deal with Kanna... I cannot turn my back on her, can I?
He then thought back to all the wonderful moments he had with Renna. The fun times, the hard times, the stressful times, and the wonderful times. That's when he realized who's approval was truly important. Not Kanna's... and not Renna's. But his own. Winning or losing does not matter, but that does not mean I will simply give up! So he laid there, waiting for Taury to get closer and closer...
And before the Turuiemon realized it, SymbareAngoramon had dealt a surprise uppercut to the martial arts bunny. With Taury now disoriented, Synn went all out. Punches, kicks, trips, blocks, evasions, any trick in the book that he had learned in his time as a competitive fighter was used here. It was a close fight, since Taury was still very skilled, but Synn had an ace in the hole. After a bit more fighting, Synn simply stopped and smirked at the Turuiemon. "Looks like you're out of bounds there, Taury."
Taury looked down in surprise; Synn was right. He had been so busy countering the SymbareAngoramon's attacks that he had fallen right into the trap; he had been slowly pushed backwards all this time, and he never realized it!
"WHAT A SUPERB BAIT-AND-SWITCH COME-FROM-BEHIND VICTORY! SYNN SYMBARE HAS DONE IT! HE HAS WON THE CHAMPION CLAAAAAAAAAASH!"
Synn was the happiest he had ever felt in years, as he heard the cheers coming from the stadium along with the confetti being shot onto the arena, fanfare music playing all throughout. He raised his right fist in the air, claiming his title as the Clash Champion, before he looked back at Renna watching from the stands. She was so overjoyed that tears were close to coming from her eyes. Synn had done it... Synn had won the Champion Clash!
If only the rest of that day had been as happy as he hoped.
It was a cloudy evening in Terminus when he found himself running through the streets, desperately trying to get to the location that he had been instructed to go. When Synn had arrived at his apartment after the Champion Clash, he was quick to realize that Renna wasn't at home. Feeling a bit worried, he had half a mind to go out searching for her... that is, until he saw the note on the kitchen table, written in a very fancy handwriting style.
We had a deal, you traitor. I told you you'd regret letting us down.
I have your little girlfriend with us right now. I want you to be here when she receives her just desserts.
Meet us in the Terminus Park, right at the entrance to the forest. And don't tell anyone, or else she gets much worse than what I have planned for her.
~Kanna
Synn couldn't believe this. He didn't think that Kanna would go that far over a bet! But one thing was certain: Renna was in trouble, and Synn had to be there to save her! He ran, ran faster than he ever did in his entire life. "Renna... I'm coming for you, Renna!"
Synn eventually made it to the spot in the park where he was told to meet Kanna at. He slid to a stop, looking back and forth for the Thetismon and Renamon. "Where the hell are they...?!"
"Up here, darling."
Synn jerked his head up to the sky, where he saw the Thetismon hovering slowly down closer to the SymbareAngoramon, with Renna wrapped tightly in her right tentacle. "I told you, didn't I?"
"RENNA!"
"S-Synn, I-"
"SHUT IT," Kanna growled with some venom, tightening her grip on Renna to the point where the Renamon let out a cry of pain and agony.
"PUT HER DOWN, THETISMON! I MEAN IT!"
"What are you going to do about it?" Kanna asked, a wicked smile on her face. "It's not like you're the leader of the Terminus Mafia like I am, hm?"
"You're... you're a Godfather?!"
"I prefer the term 'Godmother,' but yes I am, darling. Taury was actually one of my men, my most talented fighter under my employee. Him winning or losing meant nothing, as long as I bet on the right Digimon to win. But you.... you ruined everything. You cost me hundreds of millions of Bits thanks to your little stunt! No one disrespects the Godmother like that! I was going to kill you originally, but then I saw you making goo-goo eyes for this tramp here, so I thought of another way to remind you how royally you fucked up."
Synn's chest tightened; she wasn't going to do what he thought she was going to... was she?
Kanna's free tentacle caressed Renna's cheek. "She's quite the doll though now that I look at her, isn't she? Loyal, loving, compassionate... such great traits for a loving romantic partner. Must've been fate that brought you two together, hm?" The free tentacle then removed itself from Renna's face and began aiming at her chest. "A shame that something had to come along and bring a tragic end to this love story."
"NO, PLEASE DON'T-!"
"Doctase!"
Shhhhhunk!
It had happened so fast that time felt like it slowed down Kanna's free tentacle had pierced itself right into Renna's chest, injecting the deathly poison that would soon cause the Renamon to disintegrate. Once the deed had been done, Kanna tossed Renna onto the ground as if she were discarding a toy. "RENNA!" Synn cried, running up to his beloved's side, kneeling down and picking her up as tears were forming in his eyes. "No no no, please... this can't be happening...!"
"S-Synn..." Renna said before coughing wildly.
"No no, don't speak Renna, you need to save your strength-"
"Stop it, Synn... we both know I don't have much time..."
"NO! DON'T SAY THAT! We can take you to a doctor, we can get you healed! You can't leave me!"
"Not worth it; with my poison, she'll be dead within a couple of minutes."
"How could you...?! You could've killed me all you want, why did you have to target the one I love?!"
"You just answered your own question there, darling," Kanna said, a twisted smirk ever present on her face. "Besides... who said we weren't going to target you eventually, too?"
"Renna..." Synn couldn't stop the tears from flowing down his eyes. "Renna, I'm so sorry... I should've stayed with you the whole time, if I hadn't been so god damn stupid, I... I..."
"Synn... she told me what you did," Renna said, caressing her hand on the SymbareAngoramon's cheek. "You could've just lost that fight... and walked away with double the Bits..."
"I know... I know, and I should've-"
"I'm so... proud of you, Synn."
"Y...You're what?"
Renna gave a weak smile. "You stayed true to yourself... you gave it your all until the very end... that's all I care about. That unbreakable spirit of yours... that's why I love you, Synn... please... even when I'm gone... never lose that spirit..."
"Renna... I..."
Renna chuckled. "I love you too, Synn."
The two star-crossed lovers then shared one final, loving kiss. Right then was where the poison did the deed, as the Renamon's body began to disintegrate into raw data. Synn watched helplessly as the data was being absorbed by the Thetismon herself, leaving behind only himself and Kanna, who was loving every second of this. Synn was a broken mess, unable to avert his eyes from where his love once existed.
"You're not off the hook yet, Symbare... remember that," Kanna reminded Synn as she floated away. The rain then started to come down, quickly turning into a downpour, leaving the SymbareAngoramon as drenched as a wet dog.
Renna was gone... and nothing was going to bring her back.
"A lot has happened since the last time I visited, Renna."
Now reverted back to an Angoramon, it had been some time since that tragic night where Renna lost her life. Angoramon was sitting down in front of a tombstone he had carved out himself for her, placed directly in front of the forest where she had lost her life. In his hands was a bouquet of chrysanthemums and pink carnations.
"After I opened the bakery, I met this wonderful young Digimon, a Hackmon named Luneth. He has been working with me ever since, providing an extra hand with both bakery work and protecting the bakery itself. He's been a wonderful help, and a great companion. I'm sure you would've loved to meet him."
Arlo then placed the bouquet right in front of the tombstone, reading the engraving on it one more time:
Renna the Renamon
Devoted Baker and Loving Partner
"You don't need to beat someone up to feel satisfied in life."
Arlo looked down at his right hand before clenching it. "I will find Kanna one day, Renna... and I will set your spirit free. I promise you that."
"Arlo!" A familiar voice could be heard in the distance, calling for the Angoramon's attention. "The bakery is packed up and we're ready to leave when you are!"
Arlo smiled before he looked back at the tombstone. "I'll catch you later, Renna... right now, I've got a job to do."
