It was another clear day in the Digital World and Ryu and Daten were on the Trailmon heading somewhere through the tracks in the Eastern Timberlands. However, this time, it's where they meant to go the moment they arrived in the Digital World and they couldn't afford any delays this time. Because they made a promise to the first Digimon friend they defeated and befriended back in the Human World. But as they got closer, tensions were high for Ryu as he wondered what was happening in the village. Ferrost the Aruraumon said that it was attacked by some bandits because they were on their way to the temple that was supposed to have the Digimental inside it. So the real question on his mind was how bad was the sudden raid in that village and were the villagers okay.
Thankfully, he was completely prepared for the worse to come. For one thing, he bought the upgrade for his Digivice that let him buff his Keramon with cards during a pinch. He wasn't much of a card game kind of kid, but it was better than nothing. He still has the vine charm Ferrost gave him, so he hoped it would be enough to prove himself to the villagers that they were there to help out on behalf of their fellow guard.
Ryu, I see it! I see it!
Ryu quickly turned to the window near him after seeing Daten's text. They were getting closer to a forest and they could feel that the train was slowing down to a halt. "This is our stop. At this point, we're going to walk on foot from here, right Trailmon?"
"That's right, Tamer. Just be careful out there. I heard there are some rogue Digimon roaming around Server Woods lately. Unless you have death and Digi-Egg wish, you two should be careful," the Trailmon's voice echoed from the speakers.
But I don't like walking... Daten whined.
"Says a Digimon who only does nothing but cling onto my shoulder and floats in your Rookie form," Ryu snarked. "Don't worry, you just have to stay by my side and avoid splitting off from me. You are my partner and I need you, too."
Yep, yep! I promise not to split off if you don't do the same.
Ryu nodded just as the Trailmon stopped completely. The door opened in their car and the duo got off with a backpack in hand.
"Thanks for the ride, Trailmon Worm," Ryu said.
"You're welcome. If you want to go back, you might be patient. I can't say when the next one comes. Just be careful, kid," Trailmon Worm warned.
"We will."
With that, Ryu and Daten entered the woods just as the Trailmon left the small station. In all honesty, Ryu was annoyed he has to walk through the forest to find the village, but he did recall from Ferrost before they left for the Digital World that there were a few villages hidden there and there was a chance some of them fled to another. It would take a while for them to find one, but he hoped that they would be able to get to the Digimental and the villagers so they could protect both of them in time. He just hope there were no surprises coming there other than the Digimental itself.

Finding a job in the Digital World was surprisingly easier than in his world after his college graduation. Not only he has fewer worries because the time here was much slower, but most of the part-time jobs here were mostly helping Digimon in Terminus City. This way, he could earn more money enough to help feed his son and Digimon without any worries about bills and groceries. Yet, what he didn't expect was getting a job to help out a group of Digimon mercenaries on a task outside the city. He was a bit suspicious about the job offer considering the qualifications were either a strong Digimon or a Tamer with strong Digimon or just have two of them. A bit confusing, but it might be a good excuse for him to explore the Digital World.
Normally, he should have taken a Trailmon to the Server Woods where he could meet the said mercenaries. But instead, he took a Trailmon outside the woods in the Eastern Timberlands, and there, he met a variety of Digimon waiting in a large military-like truck. He and his Digimon weren't alone though as they were escorted by a reptile in a military uniform who called himself Commandramon. He seemed kind of strange as an employer, but he seemed kind of nice. Yet Ryosuke had to keep his guard up just in case.
"Hey, boss! We got a chum- I mean, a helper accepting the job!" Commandramon called out before turning to the adult Tamer. "Hey, Tamer newbie! You should introduce yourself!"
He was annoyed by that nickname, but knowing his experience from high school, he decided to ignore it. As Ryosuke approached them, he noticed that the group has several missile-like Digimon, two large black Digimon that resembled dober dogs, and a green mantis with two metal sickles attached to their arms. He was a bit suspicious of the group, especially how Taiyou was hiding behind him while Ken almost drew his shinai wooden sword upon seeing the mantis Digimon. However, he decided to get along with them for now as Ryosuke gestured for his Digimon to stand down before he approached the mantis Digimon.
"My name is Ryosuke Yoshida and these are my Digimon, Taiyo and Ken," he introduced himself. "You must be the leader, correct?"
"Yep. The name's Snimon and as you can see, I'm the leader of this expedition group," Snimon introduced back. "Sure, our mercenary jobs are our main forte, but we're here because of an ancient treasure hidden in the Server Woods."
"Uh, right." Mercenary job claims aside, Ryosuke was curious about the treasure he mentioned. "And what about this "treasure" you've mentioned?"
"No one knows what it really is, but rumors say that it might be a Digimental that can help us evolve into a powerful Digimon."
"Digi-medal?" Taiyo tried to repeat what Snimon said.
"I think he said "Digi-men-tal"," Ken corrected.
Ryosuke raised his eyebrow. "And what is this Digimental? Is it more than a treasure?"
Snimon stared at the Tamer while gently scratching his chin with one of his sickles. "Huh? So Commandramon ain't kidding about you being a newbie. Well, I have to spell it out for you. Digimental is an old treasure that is said to use the ancient version of Digivolution. We also heard that it's very picky when it comes to its user, but that's all we know."
"And what are your plans once you find it? Well, in the event you guys find it, though."
Snimon shrugged his shoulders. "Who knows? All we know is to find it and make sure no villager nearby abuse it. At least that's what our employer assigned us to do. But enough about that, we should get to camp with the others soon. Get on before we can change our minds."
The expedition Digimon started to board the truck and as Ryosuke was about to do the same, he felt a tap on his leg. He turned to see Taiyo staring at him in concern.
"Ryosuke, are you sure we can trust them? I smell trouble," Taiyo said.
It was true that they looked fishy. But Ryosuke knew that the Commandramon offered them a large number of Bits when they found them on the streets. He was still cautious, but where else could he even find a good job back at Terminus?
"I know you're concerned, but we already promised that we have to keep our guard up. That Commandramon seemed very eager to recruit us and I doubt backing out now will do both of us some favors," Ryosuke explained in a quiet tone.
"He's right. If we try to escape, I fear the worst for all of us," Ken whispered back. "Is that what you're trying to say, Ryosuke?"
"Yes. So I suggest we should lay low until then. Even if we do escape, I have a bad feeling that they managed to find that Digimental. Come on."
His partner Digimon quickly jumped into the truck just as it started up and drove away from the station. At this point, Ryosuke prayed nothing bad happened to them during this trip. Although, his thoughts were going to Ryu, who still assumed he was seemingly safe back in the Human World.

Ryu was very savvy when it came to stuff like hiking through the woods. He thought that packing enough food and water along with several key tools would help them in case of a fight occurs. Of course, while he was savvy, he did not leave Tokyo and Shibuya for a reason. Namely, he wasn't very good at navigation and his GPS app was useless in the Digital World. And now, he found himself scanning the trees and bushes surrounding them as Daten concluded their situation with a text.
We're lost, aren't we?
Ryu flinched at his Digimon's blunt comment. But he quickly shook it off and said, "No, we're not! I'm just...trying to find any village huts from here and the trees are too tall for me to climb and I might try to use those compass DIY hacks I saw on YouTube..."
Unfortunately, he picked the bad time to let Daten be in his Tsumemon form as he started scratching his face in frustration. Liar, liar! We're lost! You don't know where Ferrost's village is! I'm hungry! T_T
Ryu tried his best not to scream in pain as he quickly grabbed his Digimon and pulled him away from his face. "Okay, okay! We're lost and I'm stupid to not know that navigation stuff! I'm sorry, buddy." He groaned in dismay. "Ferrost did say some of the villages here are hidden in plain sight, so even with a GPS installed in my Digivice, there is no way we can find it very easily. As for food, remember what Trailmon C-39 said?"
I know... But I want to eat some tree data or those ramen bowls again!
Ryu groaned as he took out his Digivice. "Man, I should have bought that Digi-FM attachment than those interesting apps along with the special feature on my Digivice," he groaned before he sighed in dismay. "In any case, we might as well go around the forest one more time before we call it quits for to-"
"HELP!!!"
The Tamer and Digimon gasped in shock when they heard a child's voice echo through the woods. "I'm not the only one who heard that, right?"
Someone's in trouble! Someone's in trouble!
Ryu's eyes widened once he saw Daten's text. "Looks like a yes. Come on!"
Both of them followed the source of the voice through the woods. When they arrived, they gasped to see several Baby Digimon along with plant and beast Rookie Digimon being surrounded by missile-like Digimon along with small humanoid turtles wielding rifles and their turtle shells colored in blue camouflage.
"D-Don't hurt us!" One of the Baby Digimon pleaded.
"W-We swear! We don't know anything!" Another Baby Digimon also pleaded.
"Just let us go! The young ones have nothing to do with your so-called search!" A blue bear-like Digimon pleaded to the group.
One of the military turtle-like Digimon looked at the other and asked, "What's the plan here, sir?"
Another hummed in thought as they stared at the Rookie Digimon. "They don't know where the treasure is and they seemed to be in a settlement nearby, we might as well take them in for questioning. You know, until the leader of it caves in and tells us everything."
As this was occurring, Ryu and Daten hid behind one of the bushes as the former growled at the sight of the young Digimon being surrounded by the strange ones with rifles and their missile-shaped bodies. Curious, he took out his Digivice and scanned them from behind.
"Commandramon and Missilemon. Rookie and In-Training II respectively. They seem to be easy pickings on the outside."
His Tsumemon quickly jumped anxiously on his shoulder.
Ryu, what do we do? Should we step in and save them? He asked through the text on his Tamer's phone, which he was glad to put on vibrate before they went hiking through the woods.
"I'm planning on that. But we need to take care of those Digimon with guns first. And when I say 'take care', I mean in a non-dead kind of way," Ryu clarified.
So how are we going to do that without making them dead?
Ryu hummed quietly as he scratched his chin. But then, his eyes widened before they turned to Daten with a smirk formed on his face.
Why are smiling like that?
...
"No, let us go!" The vine Digimon with a pink flower on their head begged as one of the Digimon tried to drag them away from the group.
"Don't worry. It won't be a while until we get what we want," one of the Commandramon grinned. "Hey! Take the others away and..."
SCRATCH!!!
The group of Missilemon gasped at what they suddenly saw. The Commandramon leader was confused at their reaction. That was until he felt pain on his face.
"ARGH! What the hell?" He screamed as he felt three scratch wounds on his face, causing him to release his grip on the vine Digimon's wrist as they ran away. "Who's the Digimon dared to scratch me?!"
"Pyun!"
As if someone answered his question, everyone turned to the source of the sound. It turned out to be a lone gray-blue hand-like creature with one red eye, something that another Commandramon recognized.
"A Tsumemon?!" He exclaimed. "What the heck that Tsumemon is doing in the Server Woods?! No one told us there is one here!"
The leader, on the other hand, responded with a growl before glaring at the lone intruder. "Relax. Even if it's only a Tsumemon, it's still weaker than us. All we have to do is deal with a pest before it evolves..."
Just as he said this, the gray Digimon's body suddenly glowed and as they noticed, some of the Missilemon noticed something else from afar. Namely a young human boy grinning at them while holding out a familiar device in his hand.
"Time to Digivolve!"
As soon as he said this, the glowing Digimon transformed into a gray squid-like Digimon with green eyes, large hands, and a big grin forming on its mouth. The sight of it caused everyone but the leader Commandramon to drop their rifles and jaws.
"Into...a Keramon... Great..."
That was all he could say before the newly-evolved Digimon slapped him hard enough to fly him onto a nearby tree, much to the Commandramon and Missilemon army's shock. Once that happened, the boy slowly walked to the Keramon's side with a grin still on his face and said, "Wanna try kidnapping another kid right in front of us?"
The enemy Digimon looked at each other with a bit of hesitation. But then, the Commandramon leader got up and shouted, "What are you waiting for, you idiots?! Shoot the Keramon and its Tamer down!"
The army quickly followed their leader's orders in a panic as the Commandramon grabbed their rifles and aimed them at the virus Digimon.
"Crazy Turn!" Ryu ordered as his Keramon raised his arms and started spinning around in front of the Commandramon, which knocked their rifles out of their hands.
"You little human brat!" One of the Commandramon screamed in anger. "Missilemon, deal with him and h-"
"Scan Giggle!"
Before the Missilemon could do anything, Daten fired a green energy bullet near them, which exploded on contact as they started running away from it.
"How about you send a message to your big boss, turtle soldiers?" Ryu called out. "Try to hurt these kids and raid their village or face the might of a true Tamer and Digimon!"
The Commandramon leader growled in frustration, but he quickly joined his comrades in fleeing as he screamed to Ryu, "We're going to remember this, brats!"
The In-Training and Rookie Digimon were staring at the fleeing raiders in awe as Ryu and Daten watched them with pride.
"Should we tell them our names before you let them run away, Ryu?" Daten asked.
"And let them take advantage of that knowledge? Yeah, I rather play it safe than let those jerks know our names from the get-go," Ryu answered. "At the very least, that should be enough to keep the young Digimon..."
Before he could finish, Ryu turned and he and Daten gasped at what they found. Several armless birds aimed their metallic helmet beaks at them. Before long, they found themselves raising their hands up in fear.
"...safe," Ryu finished before he sighed in defeat. "I really hate these plot twists."
