Times were quite grim for many folks in Shibuya as of late. It was no secret that there had been a series of mass disappearances all across the Tokyo ward, and the police seemed completely baffled as to where they could've gone. It was as if they had disappeared without a trace. No common link seemed to tie any of the disappearances together, either.
But the most unsettling aspect by far is that the Digimon are also being targeted.
Hence why we see Kaya Matsui and Kazuo the Tentomon pacing around Netcafe Scion as they anxiously waited for their help to arrive. Both Kaya's partner, Hawkeye the Hawkmon, and Kazuo's partner, Yuji Moriyama, had been missing for three days each. Wrecked with worry and anxiety over the state of their partners, they each contacted others to help assist them with their search. Kaya had contacted her friend, Luneth the Hackmon, while Kazuo contacted fellow Scion, Carlos Rey and his partner, Dio the Impmon.
"Come on, come on, where are they...?" Kaya asked herself, her arms crossed as she quickly paced around the secret Digimon-included cafe area. Kazuo, meanwhile, hovered near by a table muttering to himself about if their help had disappeared as well. Finally, the ringing of a cafe door bell was heard. Both the human and the Tentomon turned to the entrance to find a young man around Kaya's age with medium-length brown hair and blue eyes. To his side was a taller, leaner, and certainly more handsome gentleman with a blonde ponytail and orange eyes.
Of course, these were only holosuit disguises; their true forms were that of Luneth the Hackmon and Arlo the Angoramon.
"Apologies for our lateness," Luneth said to Kaya and Kazuo. "We needed some assistance finding this place."
"Thank you for coming so quickly like this, Luneth," Kaya said as she walked up and gave him a friendly hug. "I wouldn't have asked if it wasn't important."
"It is no trouble at all, that I can assure you," Arlo said. "I do not believe we've officially met. I am Arlo, owner of the traveling bakery Luneth works at."
"Kaya Matsui. It's a pleasure to meet you."

Missing people's reports were, by nature, a rather upsetting subject for Carlos. In a way they were almost worse than murders or similar acts of violence, as while dissapearing victims at least had a chance of turning back alive, the sheer scope of possibilities and unknowable outcomes that came about from something like that were...well, sometimes simply impossible to resolve. Sometimes it was better to have some sort of closure, as grim as one could be, than living the rest of your existence wrecked by doubt and uncertainty about the ultimate fate of whoever was gone.
Perhaps it was because he had heard stories like that growing up that he felt particularly affected by them: his parents talking about relatives and old friends living in other countries suddenly...banishing without a trace. He might not have met any of them, (How could he? Having been born decades after the fact) but the grief felt from his parents whenever they came in conversation still very much palpable.
So was it any wonder that he was all too eager to come help Kazuo upon being contacted about a similar string of dissapearances happening all over the city?
A dark blue van parked in front of the netcafe, the dark skinned, bleached haired Carlos stepped out of the driver's door, wearing the usual black jacket that was either one of many, or one he refused to stop wearing as long as it was clean. It was hard to tell sometimes. An impmon walked by his side, also wearing a similarly black jacket, if one more fitting to his size obviously.
"Hey, sorry we took so long, people here sure get uppity about stop signs." Carlos said apologetic as he entered the building. giving Kaya and Kazuo a small wave, only for him to notice the other two men standing by their side.
"Uhm, hi. Name's Carlos. This here's Dio." He quickly introduced himself, his head tilting in the impmon's direction as he was namedropped.
"Charmed. We're Kazuo's...I guess coworkers would be the right term?" Dio added, sounding somewhat unsure.

It wouldn't be too much longer after Luneth and Arlo arrived that Carlos and Dio would enter the cafe, as well. It was pretty easy for Kaya and Kazuo to tell it was them, since Carlos had white hair and most Impmon didn't wear black jackets. "I'm so glad you both could make it," Kazuo said to the two of them with as close to glee as he could get, considering the circumstances.
"With you both here, the six of us should find those missing people in no time at all... I hope..." Kaya sounded optimistic to start, but despair quickly took over. As Carlos and Dio would see, Hawkeye was nowhere to be seen standing next to Kaya's side like usual. It wouldn't take much for one to put two and two together. "Oh, right! Carlos, Dio, this is my friend Luneth, and his friend Arlo. They're in holosuit right now, but Luneth's a Hackmon and Arlo's an Angoramon."
"Hello there," Luneth politely said to Carlos and Dio with a wave and a smile.
"It's a pleasure to meet you both," Arlo said, also with a smile towards the duo.
"Okay, now that we're all here, let Kazuo and I explain to you what's going on," Kaya said as Kazuo hovered beside Kaya, holding a tablet forward for visual reference when needed, showing photos and news articles and the sort. "Over the past few weeks, more and more humans have been going missing. The timing of when they went missing has been random at best, with almost no connection between any of them."
"Except it isn't just the humans that are being taken," Kazuo piped in. "What the police and the public don't know is that a buncha different Digimon are going missing as well."
Kaya nodded, her facial expression growing more grim. "As you can see, Hawkeye and Yuji... they've also gone missing. They've each been gone for three days, and we're both getting really worried."
"Kaya... I'm so sorry... same goes to you, Kazuo," Luneth said in a sympathetic manner.
"Thank you, Luneth," Kaya said, trying her hardest to remain professional. "Thanks to some help from a certain acquaintance of ours, we've been able to look up a list of friends and family members of each victim, human and Digimon included. I was thinking we'd split into two or three groups and interview each and every one."
"And you're hoping that this will find a common thread between the disappearances?" Arlo asked.
"Exactly," Kaya said. "Think about it; none of these people even look like they'd be friends with each other, and same goes for the Digimon. There has to be something that they each have in common, but I can't figure it out. So, Carlos, Dio, will you please help us?"

"Don't mention it, Scions' gotta stick together and...stuff." Carlos said, catching himself a bit too late to not sound too cheesy in his desire of being helpful. At the very least Dio didn't take the opportunity to make fun of him for it for a change, perhaps still thinking about the talking down the two had received not too long ago before officially joining the Scions, perhaps not feeling it was adequate in the face of Kaya clearly not having a good time.
"Likewise." Was all he'd say as Luneth and Arlo were introduced. At the very least it was good to know they'd have some help when it came with their search efforts.
The rundown of the situation was about what Carlos expected, since the media hadn't exactly been quiet about the situation either: a random string of dissapearances with seemingly no correlation or conection between eachother. Of course neither he nor the media had the full picture, as he was soon to find out when Kazuo brought up digimon were also vanishing. Both man and impmon fell a pit in their stomach when learning the names of two fo the dissapearances: Hawkeye and Yuji.
"I'm...sorry to hear that." No wonder Kazuo and Kaya seemed particularly distressed about this, they had a real personal stake in the situation too.
"We'll find them, all of them." Dio added, trying to seem reassuring, though still clearly taken aback by the news.
Once the whole briefing was over and it became clear how the rest of their day was going to pan out, he'd turn himself to face Dio, giving him a knowing look.
"Ah right, if we're going to ask around we should probably get something...a bit less conspicuous."
Dio merely looked back at the human, a blank expression in his face and his arms crossed. After a bit of an awkward silence, Carlos would add a somewhat pleading "Please?", to which the impmon rolled his eyes with a sigh.
"Fine, fine." With a loud click and a sparking of light, Dio's body was nowhere to be seen, in his place a slender black cat with green eyes stood, his flicking tail and gaze betraying an air of annoyance. "You really should consider updating this thing. Fur is a painfully obnoxious thing to content with." With his complaining done he'd leap in a single bound to the top of one of the cafe's tables, and from there to Carlos' shoulder, where he made himself comfortable before turning to face the group.
"So, how should we split up?"
"I say we keep it to two groups. I'm hoping this will be risk free but just in case it's probably better not to split our group too thin."

The morale among the group had taken quite a hit when Hawkeye and Yuji were revealed to be among the missing humans and Digimon. Luneth, Carlos, and Dio all immediately understood how important this case was to Kaya and Kazuo once those names were mentioned. Arlo not as much, simply because he didn't know Kaya nor Kazuo that well, but he could at the very least tell that this Hawkeye and Yuji meant quite a lot to the two of them. "You're right, Dio," Kaya said to the Impmon. "We're going to find them all, and bring them home safe. Because I refuse to think about what might happen if we can't..."
Now that the briefing was over and the group had their objectives, it was clear what the next step was. With Dio having activated his cat holosuit, it was decided that they would split into two groups to interview the friends and families of those who disappeared. "What I'm thinking is that one group interviews all those related to the disappeared humans, and the other group interviews the Digimons' friends. Maaaaybe... Carlos and Arlo, you can come with me to interview the humans, since you're adults and they may take you more seriously."
"So then you want the rest of us to interview the Digimon, I assume?" Luneth asked.
Kazuo would be the one to respond to that. "Yeah, that's right. I even went ahead and invited all the missing Digimons' friends to Netcafe Scion. They should be here somewhat soon-ish..."
"Meanwhile, us humans... and sorta-human... will go from house to house and do quick interviews with each of the humans' friends. I have a list of them here on my tablet, along with their addresses. Don't worry, I asked them beforehand if they're okay with taking interviews... though only three of them actually agreed to it."
"That's perfectly fine. Some information is better than none," Arlo said to Kaya.
"Once Arlo and Carlos are ready, the three of us will head out to the residential district," Kaya said as she waited for them. Then once they had everything they needed, the three of them would leave together.
A few minutes after the trio left the netcafe is when the Digimon that Kazuo had mentioned arrived in the cafe. It was a group of rookie level Digimon, consisting of Hagurumon, Bearmon, Palmon, Fanbeemon, Labramon, and Kotemon. Each were friends with one of three missing Digimon: Gabumon, Morphomon, and Dracomon.
"Thank all of you for coming to meet with us," Kazuo said to them, trying to sound as polite as possible. "I know it's gotta be really hard, talking about a good friend of yours that disappeared. But that's why I invited you; I want to help find them, and find the one I care about, as well. It would be a lot easier if we helped each other, right?"
The six Digimon looked at each other, unsure of what to make of the situation, until the Kotemon finally spoke up. "Wh-what do you wish to ask of us?" he asked in a timid tone of voice.
Meanwhile, Kaya, Arlo, and Carlos would arrive at the first house with a skip, a hop, and a subway ride. The first person they would be interviewing was Momo Arakawa, a middle-aged woman whose husband, Saburo, was among the missing. With all the confidence in the world, Kaya knocked on the front door of the apartment unit, and a woman with short dark hair answered the door. Her facial expression couldn't have looked more grim.
"Oh yeah, you said you'd be coming today," Momo said in a monotone tone of voice. Her eyes squinted as she got a better look at the trio. "You sure as hell don't look like detectives."
"I can assure you that we are very trustworthy detectives, madam," Arlo politely said. "I'm Arlo Symbare, and this is my partner Carlos and my... sister, Kaya."
"I don't know, maybe this isn't such a good idea after all..." Momo said, as she was beginning to have second thoughts.
"Momo Arakawa, correct? Your husband Saburo went missing two weeks ago. As someone whose lost a soul mate in the past, I know how genuinely terrible that must feel. All we want is to find them all and bring them home safe. So please, help us be able to do that. Any information can be of great use to us."
Momo paused for a moment, looking like she was debating what to do in her head. Eventually, she sighed and shook her head. "Alright, fine. What have I got to lose, anyways? What is it that you want to know?"

"Ah, yeah sure, I'm cool with that." Carlos nodded, not having any objections to how Kaya planned to split the group. Though seeing how Dio would be part of the digimon side of the investigation, the holosuit was probably redundant. "Er, Dio, do you want me to-?"
"No no." Dio quickly replied, his voice betraying a small amount of strain, though Carlos couldn't tell if it was annoyance or just due to the "cat" doing some stretches as he did. "That's fine, I'll keep this thing on for a while longer. Changing in and out of it feels weird anyways."
Either that, or the imp actually didn't mind the form change as much as he did, but Carlos wasn't about to start arguing about something that petty. Once that was settled he'd leave out of the building along with Arlo and Kaya, leaving Dio and the rest behind to deal with the digimon. Once they arrived, said invited trio seemed rather unsure of what they were even doing here, even after Kazuo very politely explained their plan to them. Not that Dio could blame them, if he were in their shoes and back on the digital world he'd much rather be looking for his missing friends on his own than answering questions about it.
"Are all of you and your missing friends part of the same group?" Dio asked, politely if a bit brusque. "Did any of you knew eachother before they bani-" He paused for a moment, considering his choice of words, "...er, went missing?"
A subway ride later and the trio would arrive at the house of their first witness, a woman by the name of Momo. While Kaya and Arlo radiated at least some amount of confidence in their stride as they knocked on the door, the man couldn't help but feel slightly out of his element. It was almost funny how facing off against mountain sized monsters and sword wielding ghosts of the past seemed like small fry to the simple act of interviewing someone that had literally lost someone clsoe.
That feeling didn't quite improve as Carlos couldn't help but fidget in place ever so slightly as Momo very rightfully doubted their detective "look". He gave a nod as Arlo reassured the grieving woman, trying his best to keep up what little credibility they had but otherwise kept quiet (lest he betrayed the sudden wave of self doubt that kept washing over him like a defective buoy) as the digimon slowly but surely convinced Momo to at least give the investigation a chance.
"Well...let's start with the basics. Do you know where your husband was or was supposed to be before he dissapeared? Work, groceries, that sort of thing?" Carlos was the first to ask. Indeed it was a basic question, but it was better to set the scene first before asking the real hard hitting questions, not like he could start his line of questioning by "did you see something resembling a portal during that time?"

"Sorry about that, Dio," Kaya said to the holosuited Impmon while Luneth deactivated his own. "You activated your holosuit faster than I could explain how we were going to do things."
And now that Kaya, Carlos, and Arlo were gone, it was now just Luneth, Kazuo, and Dio in Netcafe Scion. Or rather, it would be just them until Hagurumon, Bearmon, Palmon, Fanbeemon, Labramon, and Kotemon showed up. Kazuo had explained to them what was going on, and they all reluctantly agreed to at least help answer some questions, with Kotemon speaking up to confirm this.
Dio asked if all the Digimon here knew each other, or if they were all a part of the same friend group. Kotemon would shake his head and answer first. "No, we're not. Hagurumon and I are friends with Dracomon."
"Gabumon is me and Bearmon's friend," Labramon spoke up next.
"And Morphomon was friends with me and Palmon," Fanbeemon added.
"Okay, so we have three defined groups..." Luneth mused to himself. "What are each of them like?"
"Dracomon's outgoing and a jokester." "Morphomon is caring and stern." "Gabumon's sweet, but shy and unconfrontational."
Luneth sweatdropped. "They don't even sound like they'd get along..."
Then, Hagurumon would speak up. "Well, Dracomon hasn't been very like himself for a while, Kotemon. Not ever since Agumon was loaded, remember?"
"Oh yes, how could I have forgotten...?" Kotemon muttered. Perhaps this was the makings of a clue in the works?
Back at the apartment complex, the group had successfully managed to convince Momo to let them interview her. Kaya and Arlo had a good feeling about where this could lead, but Carlos looked a little bit awkward and out of place, or at least he did to Arlo. Still, he was managing to keep a straight face for the sake of their mission.
Carlos would be the first one to ask her a question, asking if she knew where he was supposed to be going before he disappeared. Momo shook her head no. "Honestly, it's rare that Saburo says anything to me before leaving for work anymore," she said. "He hasn't really been the same since our daughter passed away a few years ago. I've done everything I could to help him get better, but he hasn't budged."
"Grief can take many forms," Arlo said. "Some try to repress it, while others are consumed by it throughout their lives."
"Yes, I'm well aware of that these days," Momo said as she nodded. "But to answer your question, no, Saburo didn't say anything to me before he left, but I assumed he was simply going to work. I spoke with one of his friends at work, and he did say that Saburo mentioned stopping at somewhere interesting he passed by... but that could've meant anything."

Dio gave Kaya a small shrug (or as close to one this cat holosuit could get, as if to say "don't worry about it".
At any rate, the digimon's starting answer to his question answered on thing while leaving a lot more up in the air. The dissapearances didn't seem to be targetted at a specific group of people, at least none that actually knew eachother previously, so that already removed a possible connection. Hell, for all intents and purposes they didn't seem to share any similarities on a surface level, personality or otherwise.
Just as Dio was about to jump to another question, something else caught his attention as the dissapearing Dracomon was brought up, and how he had been affected since "Agumon was loaded". Ah yes, loading, one of the digital world's biggest taboos for some, a sad part of reality for others. Despite living surrounded by that former group for the better part of years now, deep down Dio couldn't bring himself to be nearly as horrified about that prospect as most other digimon seemed to be. Perhaps it was from years spent on the Dark Area forcing him to accept it as a fact of life, perhaps it was his past memories influencing him, in the end the result was the same. So perhaps it shouldn't have been surprising that Dio would quickly zero in on that little detail.
"Could you tell us more about that loading? The culprit, the why, anything at all." He soon added, "This could be significant to the investigation, so I'm sorry if I'm asking where I shouldn't."
Already theories were forming in his mind...most of them rather on the grim side, but at the very least Dio had enough tact to not bring any of them up just yet. No need to further upset their only witnesses.
"Sorry to hear that. I can only imagine what that must have done to you two." Carlos said, feeling even more out of his depth than he already was. Great, so this wasn't just a missing person, but someone not in the best state of mind by the looks of it. Were it not for the fact they knew he wasn't the only one, Carlos could already imagine a good number of reasons why Saburo might have banished. Some of them voluntary, none of them happy.
Just as importantly however, Momo reveaeled him mentioning to a coworker something to the effect of "Stopping at somewhere interesting", whatever that could mean. Obviously it was a long shot to focus solely on that detail, but it was worth keeping in mind for later, though Carlos would certainly ask more about it. "It could be anything, might even be nothing, but just to be safe: do you happen to know if he always took the same route to his work? It could maybe try to help us narrow down the search area, maybe check security footage of any cameras there." Of course that last part was half a long shot, half him talking out of his ass to try and seem more legitimate. There was a possibility they could try to get said footage for themselves one way or another, but really just being able to narrow down where to look for clues was a start.

When the question about the loading of Agumon came up, both Hagurumon and Kotemon went quiet. They didn't seem like they wanted to talk about such a subject; likely an indicator that this loading was still very recent for that particular group of friends.
"I don't think they really wanna talk about it all that much," Kazuo said, stating the obvious. "Was this Agumon your friend, as well?" Hagurumon and Kotemon both nodded in response to Kazuo's question. "Yeah, then I guess it makes sense why you wouldn't wanna talk about it."
"Um, if I may speak," Bearmon's voice suddenly spoke, "But Gabumon's mother was loaded when he was still young. He told me it happened when he was still a Tsunomon."
"Morphomon's brother was kidnapped during the Grandmaster era," Fanbeemon spoke next, "And she hasn't seen him since, if you think that would help at all."
"So all of them have lost someone in the past...?" Luneth muttered out loud. He looked over to Dio and Kazuo. "Do either of you think that would have something to do with it?"
"Maybe... but haven't we all lost someone at some point? I lost Yuyu once when we got separated at the mall."
"Not that form of 'lost,' I'm afraid... Dio, what do you make of this?"
After Momo had explained her story involving her missing husband, Carlos asked her if Saburo had always taken the same route to work. "All I know is that he takes the subway straight to his workplace. He works at an office building in Shibuya as an accountant. Here, I can show you where it is..."
While Momo got her phone out to look up Saburo's workplace, Kaya would get out her own phone and called up one of her own allies. "Hey, Johan. It's me, Kaya. Can I talk to Zero please? ...Hi, Zero, this is Kaya Matsui, one of Johan's friends. You're good with computers and finding security footage, right...?"
Once that was done with, and Momo had shown Arlo, Carlos, and Kaya the place on Foogle Maps, Kaya pulled out her tablet, which seemed to show some security camera footage on it. "I got a friend of mine to send us this camera footage. All we have to do is find Saburo on the train and then follow where he goes."
A few minutes of searching for him later, Momo would point out what he looks like. He was a fairly average looking man in his forties, nothing too special or stand out about him. Nothing too out of the ordinary happened as the group watched the train camera footage, until the moment when another human approached Saburo. "Wait, look, he's speaking with someone."
No words could be heard between the two, but whatever this stranger had to say left Saburo very confused. The exchange ended with the stranger handing Saburo a card before walking away. Saburo looked at the card for a few seconds before a content grin formed on his face. The mystery was growing more and more... what kind of card was he just given?

The more the group of digimon shared, the more an obvious pattern began to emerge. All of the missing ones shared at least one thing in common: they all had lost someone close to them at some point.
Trying his best to ignore the sudden pain he felt somewhere in his chest as Kazuo's innocent comment reminded Dio of his own "lost one" (even if his gut told him he was doing fine), he instead focused on Luneth as he approached Dio for his opinion. He rubbed at his chin pensively, his gaze completely focused yet looking at nothing in particular, clearly lost in many a thought.
"This might be a bit...presumtious. But I think that's our best lead so far. Whatever it is that's happening to these digimon, it could have something to do with their shared situatiom. Someone or something specifically target those that are grieving, maybe?" He posited, though clearly he himself didn't seem all too convinced of his own theory. It seemed far fetched, but frankly it's not like they had much else to go on for now.
"Feh." The holosuited imp shook his head, brow furrowed in an irritated look. Why couldn't investigating be as easy as in those cheesy whodunit movies Carlos loved so much? "Sorry, still new to this whole deduction thing. In my honest opinion though? This isn't a coincidence."
Momo's testimony helped narrow things down a fair bit, or at the very least told the group where they could look. Furthermore, Kaya's contacts were nothing short of efficient when it came to giving them the relevant help with evidence, even if the footage gave Carlos more questions than answers.
A misterious figure appearing to a now missing man in front of a train to work? Had this been a less dire situation, he would have probably made a comment about how it reminded him of the plot to a certain video game, but this wasn't the time or place. Besides, seeing this he kept coming back to Momo's comment about Saburo telling a coworker something about "an interesting place."
"...he's handing him an invitation maybe?" He said, almost without thinking, before elaborating. "You know like a business' card or something advertising a place. Hell, a new job offer even, I don't know." If only technology was good enough to allow extreme zooms on security footage, then maybe they could simply read directly from the card held in Saburo's hands, but alas such Blade Runner esque fantasies were still just a bit out of reach.
"Alright, so that's weird enough but then what? Does he still make it to work?"

Dio seemed to agree that the fact that the kidnapped Digimon had all lost someone in the past was no mere coincidence. Whatever this thing was, it was targeting those who were grieving. "Well, I think that's a solid enough lead to go on, for now. There are Digimon that can feed off of negative emotions, so perhaps it's a case of taking them and hopefully preserving them for a future meal."
Maybe Luneth should've chosen his words more carefully. This statement ended up getting the other grieving Digimon all riled up, as they all now feared the worst.
"Someone's going to eat Agumon?!"
"Not Morphomon!"
"No one's going to eat my Yuyu!"
"Calm down, everyone! Apologies, I'm sure it's not as grave as I made it out to be." He turned his head back to Dio. "But you're right, this isn't a coincidence. Let's wait for the others to show up, maybe they'll find out something themselves."
Back with group number two, they watched the security camera footage as someone seemed to be handing Saburo some form of card. Carlos suggested it could be like some kind of business card. "A business card I think, yeah," Kaya said with a nod.
"Look at the way Saburo smiled afterwards," Arlo said. "Whoever gave it to him must have mentioned something positive about his daughter, since he's still in mourning."
"What, did they offer to bring her back to life?" Kaya asked, sounding unsure about what she just said.
"That has to be the case, regardless of if the promise is true or not."
The security camera footage continued. As expected, Saburo did get off at the stop nearest to his work place, as Momo had confirmed when it got to that point. Hours later, Saburo was seen getting back on the train. Instead of going home, however, Saburo got off at a point in Shibuya that Momo didn't recognize. Zero sent more security camera footage, showing Saburo walking down an alleyway before fading from view altogether. Not as if he disappeared, but as if he had entered a camera dead spot.
"I don't recognize that alleyway," Kaya admitted. "I think that's as much information as we can get from the video."
"It was more than enough," Arlo said. "I believe we should continue with our questioning. Thank you for your time, Mrs. Arakawa."
Momo nodded and waved goodbye, although she did not say a word after that... The group would then go and question the others on the list, and they would more or less walk away with the same results as they did from questioning Momo Arakawa. Every single human victim was in mourning of a loved one, but aside from that they ranged in age, gender, occupation, daily activities... the mourning was the only thing linking all of them together.
"Hawkeye's still mourning Eizo... and Yuji's been mourning his mother for years, he told me..." Kaya said. "Come on, we should go back to Netcafe Scion and discuss this with the others."
Arlo nodded, his digicore skipping a beat. He, too, was in mourning still... would he be the next target?
