Resentment of the Archer [Adrian]

Rory hadn’t been able to fully comprehend the reports at first. As Trailmons hauled construction materials and workers to and from the site of the reconstruction of the Rosewood schoolhouse, several of the machine digimon had told him that there were digimon watching them from the sides of their railroads. However, with some consultation with digimon senior to him, they took it seriously as well. He, Shoutmon and Adrian had been called for a discreet gathering by Owen the Gaomon, Captain of the 7/71st and the leading digimon behind the project of the reconstruction of the Rosewood schoolhouse.
“I think it’s likely that there’s some digimon that intend to make trouble with this project.” Owen stated, once they had gathered up enough information to determine that to be so. “And we can’t let that stand. If this school is going to be successful, we’re going to have to protect it, however we can. Rory, have you heard of anything that might be threatening to us?”
Rory sighed, wishing it wasn’t so, but unfortunately, it was. He had heard much angry mutterings of digimon in Rosewood and surroundings that resented the fact that they were intending to build a monument to the human world there. Even though Rory himself approved of the whole project, he still had his misgivings about it being seemingly placed there and not expect pushback. But the fact that he had heard these digimon state that they intended to have their way through violence if it came to that, he couldn’t abide by that.
“Yes, Mr. Owen. I’ve heard from several sources that they resent the fact that we’re opening a human style school for digimon, and they intend to sabotage our efforts in rebuilding it.”
Rory didn’t like saying that, knowing he’d pretty much have to cut off all ties to an old boyfriend because of this fact. While the Veemon had been cute and all that, the Coronamon couldn’t abide by his plans of sabotage against a freaking school. He took a sigh and decided to push it all out of his mind for now. A matter like this, he couldn’t hold any sentimental feelings about it.
Rory had felt sad in their last parting. He had liked that Veemon in their time together as classmates in Rosewood, but as time went on, that Veemon had started to get entangled with digimon from the Valley of Dragons, who first scoffed at how much they were meant to respect humans, then had come to downright resent it. To the point that in Rory’s ceremonial duel with Owen in being formally accepted into the new 7/71st Recon Company, that Veemon had long gone to the West. And now it seemed, he had come back East, with ill intent.
“Very well then.” Owen said, formally. “Rory, I’d like you and your dad to protect the Trailmon tracks between the school. You two are among the best combat-oriented digimon with us in this project, and I think you’d be the best to handle this.” the Gaomon shifted his gaze to Adrian. “Since Shoutmon is your partner, you should join them. You can use your digivice to keep in contact with us on what you find out there.”
For the moment, Rory was fine with this arrangement, he turned to Shoutmon and Adrian to see how they’d handle this task.

Adrian and Shoutmon both had concerns when they heard the reports. Usually, Digimon staring at projects related to humans was a sign that something really bad was going to happen to try and sabotage those projects, as the two had learned before. Hence why when they had joined Rory for the discreet meeting with Owen, they both had an aura around them that Rory would likely not have seen before. Especially regarding Shoutmon, whose usual positive energy was replaced with a serious glare that he didn't often have.
Although, they weren't the only ones acting out of character... Rory seemed upset, and for good reason. When Owen asked him if he had heard anything, the Coronamon confirmed that there were indeed Digimon that resented the fact that a human-style school was being built, and there were plans to sabotage it.
"The push-back against projects like the school has been getting stronger lately," Adrian said. "Not that I can't see where they're coming from. I doubt humans would like it if aliens came to Earth from another world and started imposing their own customs onto us."
"Yeah, but the school is a good thing," Shoutmon said, who was currently in his Champion form, SuperShoutmon, for this mission. "It's a good thing that humans and Digimon are going to become closer. Heck, Rosewood is a city that represents the whole unity between them!"
"And do you remember the push-back from that? The Flybeemons that tried to bully us out of Rosewood when we were guiding those kids there?"
Shoutmon sighed and nodded. "The more things change, the more they stay the same, I guess."
Owen then asked Adrian, Shoutmon, and Rory to help protect the Trailmon tracks leading to the school, since Shoutmon and Rory were the best combat-oriented Digimon in the project at the moment. Were the situation not so serious, Shoutmon may have allowed a blush to form on his face due to the compliment. He put on a confident grin as he looked back at Owen. "Don't you worry about a thing, Owen. You can count on us."
As they were leaving, Adrian would explain what he believed to be the best course of action to the two Digimon that were accompanying him. "On paper, this task should be simple. We'll be on lookout at the train tracks and search for any suspicious activity. Should we find the culprits, we'll talk to them until they inevitably get sick of talking and try to attack us."
"And in our cases, Digimon like these tend to get sick of talking real fast."
"It's important that we're not the ones that make the first move. These Digimon see us as our enemies, so we should try to avoid giving them validation on their stance. And if we do fight, I think it'd be best to move the fight to an area that'd do less damage. What do you think, Rory? Am I missing anything?"

Rory pondered over Adrian’s question. He thought of what he knew about his former friend, and let them know what he knew of him.
“Well, when he was a classmate, he was something of a charmer, so he could have friends working with him in this, but he always liked to be the leader.” the Coronamon began. “And he learned from Mr. Owen’s classes too, he was near the top of Survival class wasn’t he?”
“That he was.” Owen said, clearly regretting giving this digimon the skills he needed to be this much of a threat. “And yes, that is the core of this mission, stand them down peacefully if you can. None of us want the wrong people to think that this school is an armed facility and give them an excuse to take it out in a concentrated attack. It is simply a place of learning.”
“Absolutely, Mr. Owen.” Rory said, horrified at the thought of what they’d do if they were forced into combat. “With dad here though, we should be able to at least show them that we don’t mean to fight to the death, just that we'll respond with enough force if they threaten us.”
Owen was satisfied that Adrian, Shoutmon and Rory understood what was going on here. “Alright then. Rail traffic for now is closed on the branch line while you do your sweep. Pay close attention to the bridges in the area, they’re the most likely targets for attacks on the railroad.”
When that briefing was concluded, Rory proceeded by foot along the track through the forest. It was lush and thriving for this time of the year, although with the autumn winds starting to blow in, some trees looked yellower than others. The branch line wound its way through a somewhat hilly terrain, a trackbed carved through the sides of hills under the heavy canopy of the Eastern Timberlands. Rory knew from his training that danger could be anywhere, but as the sounds of construction on the schoolhouse faded, it was almost peaceful here in the forest. Wind rustled the leaves above, some falling as the season took them.
It was the air of possible hostility that prevented Rory from relaxing, but, the presence of Shoutmon and Adrian reassured him so that he didn’t feel nervous.
“Heh, maybe we could go camping here sometime, dad.” he suggested, mainly to break the silence. “It’s a nice trail here. Good views, close to water, and right next to the school branch line.” Memories of several Survival field trips made him spot several suitable campsites for such a thing.

It stunned Adrian and Shoutmon to learn that not only is the leader of this group one of Rory's former friends, but also a former student of Owen's survival classes. Not only that, but he was also one of the best students Owen had, as well. "Rory, I..." Shoutmon tried to say, but he didn't know what the right words would be.
The three of them at least understood what the core of their mission was. Do a sweep along the branch Trailmon line, paying extra close attention to the bridges while looking for this group of attackers. The autumn leaves provided a nice scenery for the group as they headed off on foot along the tracks at least, giving a very serene atmosphere. As they walked, though, Shoutmon just couldn't help but keep his mind on the fact that they were essentially looking for one of Rory's old friends.
"So, Rory... about this friend of yours..." Shoutmon said. "Would you mind telling me a bit about them? Not just to know what we're in for if we do find them, but just because... well, I know it's hard having to fight someone you care about. I know I've had to do it plenty of times before."
"And it's alright if you don't want to talk about it," Adrian reassured Rory.
After a period of silence with the group walking, as well as Adrian taking various pictures of the scenery, Rory suggested to Shoutmon that they should go camping here at some point. Shoutmon smiled as he thought about the idea. "Yeah, I think we could do that together at some point," Shoutmon said. "Setting up a campsite by the river, roasting meat apples and marshmallows by the fire, watchin' the stars..."
"If you two do go, you can count me out," Adrian said. "Not because I wouldn't wanna go, but because I'd probably just end up being a third wheel."
"I don't think you'd be one, but if you say so... once we're done with this mission here, Rory, we can make plans to go camping before winter arrives."
"There's a bridge over there coming up," Adrian announced, pointing to the nearby trail bridge that was coming up. "Keep your guard up, guys."

Rory knew that this line of pleasant conversation couldn’t continue for very long, especially now that he knew that his former friend was definitely an enemy. The Coronamon took a deep breath and answered his father honestly.
“He was once a friend.” he began, speaking in a monotone voice to hide the emotions he felt behind the words. “He joined Mr. Owen’s academy at the same time as me so we could learn things together, but, then things happened that he didn’t like and got jealous of. Like you, Mr. Owen and me getting to grow close to humans and he didn’t. He took it as an insult. W-we…” Rory stammered as he brought up bad memories, but took some breaths to regain his composure. “We fought pretty badly at one point. He demanded I give him the secrets to bonding with humans, given that I’m your son and you have a human partner… we hurt each other pretty bad, I’m sorry I didn’t tell you about it, I thought it would be the end of it when I broke his nose and he said we were through. But… I never thought he’d be as rotten as this, aiming to hurt innocents that just want to build a school.”
It took a few moments, but Rory realized he was weeping a little. He quickly wiped the tears from his eyes and looked up at Shoutmon.
“If we’ve gotta fight him, please let’s not kill him.” he asked. “He’s just being an enormous dickhead. I mean of course we’ve gotta stop him, he’s threatening a school for Jesmons’ sake. Just… not have it be his death sentence?”
As they travelled further, they were indeed close to a bridge through the heavy forest of the Eastern Timberlands that connected Rosewood with the school construction site. Rory thought that this was close to where his old friend would stake his attack position. And once again, he looked to his father.
“He’s misguided, jealous and foolish, so those are the things we have to deal with.” he said, thinking of what his mother Skye would assess about the situation. “So do you think we’re ready to confront him here?” he asked, turning to Adrian as well, given that the human might have an opinion about the situation as well.

The way Rory spoke was unlike anything that Adrian and Shoutmon ever expected from the Coronamon. Such a monotone voice, devoid of the personality that made Rory who he was. He explained how his friend joined Owen's survival course at the same time as he did, before the friend starting getting jealous of Rory, of Adrian and Shoutmon, of all Digimon who got close to humans. The two of them badly fought, the friend demanding Rory to give him the secrets of bonding with humans. Rory broke his friend's nose in the process, and he believed that to be the end of their relationship.
Shoutmon's heart broke when he saw Rory cry. He hated seeing any of his kids go through pain like that, but it hurt seeing Rory in such a state most of all. Without another word, Shoutmon walked over to Rory. He placed his hands on his son's shoulders, and then pulled him in for a tight hug.
"You have nothing to be sorry about, Rory," Shoutmon said, still hugging Rory. "If anything, I should be the one who's sorry. I should've been there for you at the time, I should've been the one to do more to help you. We're a family, Rory, you shouldn't have to be afraid to come to us, you know? Please don't hide these feelings from us anymore."
"I also know what you're going through, Rory," Adrian added. "I'm not just saying that. Sometimes arguments happen and friendships end, and it's a horrible, horrible feeling of betrayal, followed by a bunch of self-loathing."
After the hug ended, Rory asked Shoutmon to not kill his friend. Sure, they had to stop him, but he didn't want this encounter to be the end of his friend's life. "I promise I'll do whatever I can to prevent that, Rory... but depending on how this goes, there might not be any other option if your friend is that far gone."
The group then reached the bridge that connected Rosewood to the school construction site, the spot where Rory's old friend would stake his attack. Misguided, jealous, and foolish... maybe a more civil approach would be the best option, although if this old friend were to see a human, they may attack on sight.
"I think Rory and I should go first for the start of the negotiations," Shoutmon said. "Adri, you should stay back here. This guy doesn't care for humans, so it might be best if we ease you into it slowly."
"Yeah, I getcha," Adrian responded. "I'll hide here in the forest, just signal me with the link comm if you need me."
"Sure thing," Shoutmon replied with a thumbs up. He looked towards Rory next. "I'm ready to go in. You should take the lead on this one, kiddo."

Rory immediately felt embarrassed that he had let his true emotions slip, especially in front of his father. Dammit, he was supposed to keep such things under control, but that was too much to expect at the moment, being sent on a mission to possibly exterminate a former friend who had turned into such a monster that would sabotage the building of a school.
He appreciated both how strong and warm Shoutmon was, realizing he had rarely hugged him like this before. This wasn’t like a flirty hug he had with other digimon he was dating with, it was a parental hug. He rarely had these with his mother Skye either, so it was unusual for him, but it filled him with confidence at their task ahead.
“Thanks, dad, but don’t be sorry, at the time it was a problem I thought I could handle, and I did it in my own way, you or mom getting involved probably wouldn’t have changed the outcome.” Rory said in response, his voice discarding the monotone and he was able to speak with a smile on his face again, even if his eyes remained a little watery.
He also appreciated Adrian’s words, it enforced the feeling that digimon and humans can and should live among another. That they shared such experiences, it was a good thing what they were aiming for with harmony between humans and digimon. Yes, Rory had heard all the stories about how even though most humans were nice, the worst of them tended to become leaders, make horrible decisions and actions and bring about the worst outcomes possible, he was sure people like Adrian or his brother’s partner Serena would never be like that. “Yeah, cheers.” he said, wiping away his tears and turned back toward the tracks, feeling more determined.
Shoutmon promised he’d try not to kill him, but of course such a thing could not be guaranteed in combat. Rory understood with a nod. “Yeah, can’t save him from himself if it comes to it.” he replied, “...but maybe if we knock him about a bit he might be more willing to listen.” That seemed like a better route, if words failed, maybe some fisticuffs to clear his ears would work?
Rory agreed with the plan to take the lead over the bridge. The Coronamon did so, flicking his yellow scarf back over his shoulders and marched onto the wooden trestle structure. “Well, I’m here, Veemon!” he shouted out to the surrounding forest, over the rush of the river below. “We got wind of your plan, so are you gonna give up this bullshit or-”
The Coronamon’s speech was cut off when the wooden sleeper he was about to step upon shattered. He gasped and forced himself to fall backwards onto the previous one so as not to fall into the river below.
“Of course, they send you.” a deep but familiar voice spoke. Rory quickly got back to his feet as he saw what was approaching. An blue centaur-like digimon with black armor, wielding a glowing longbow with an arrow in place for shooting. “You do realize you’d be dead right now if I aimed three feet higher?”
Rory took a moment to compose himself, but he managed to do so. Shoutmon and Adrian had his back after all. “Yeah, I realize that.” he replied. “But the fact that you didn’t tells a tale in itself. Why didn’t you, Sagittarimon?”
“Because if I did, your dad would’ve immediately evolved to Mega thanks to his pet human and killed me.” Sagittarimon answered. “Don’t think I’m that stupid, you’re here to talk me down, aren’t you? If your school wanted to deal with me quickly then that fool dog Owen would be here instead of you.”
Rory held back a venomous response that probably wouldn’t have improved the tone of the conversation. He supposed saying ‘Wow, you playing a game where you bitch-talk everyone I care about?’ would be unproductive, so instead he did his best to keep his head cool, took a deep breath, and asked what he thought was the most important question.
“Why do you want to do this?” he asked Sagittarimon. “We know your plan, you want to destroy this bridge when a Trailmon full of supplies, humans or even students are crossing and kill them all. What brought you to this madness?”
“Madness?” Sagittarimon repeated, scowling. “You call my intentions madness?” the centaur-dragon digimon pointed in the direction of Adrian. “The true madness is letting people like him free to walk and shape the digital world as they please!”
“So your problem is with the humans.” Rory concluded. “And just how does building a school justify murder and terrorism?”
“It nips the noxious weed in the bud, that’s what it does!” Sagittarimon snarled in response. “It starts with this so called innocent school, and ends with people like him in 50 years’ time bringing ruin to the digital world, like they have with their own world!”
That line took Rory by surprise. His knowledge of the human world was quite limited, but thankfully with Adrian here there was a fully grown human to argue this point.
“That’s absurd, these guys don’t want to bring ruin to the digital world at all!” he said, hoping they would be able to argue that case with strong grounds.

"Maybe not, but it probably would have eased your pain a bit," Shoutmon said, letting himself out of the hug to look his son in the eyes. "I'm proud of the fact that you can solve your own problems, but next time don't leave us out of the loop, okay? Your mother and I want to know what's going on in your life, as well as Luneth's and Gem's."
When Shoutmon promised he'd try not to kill Rory's friend, he was glad that Rory understood that such a thing wouldn't be a guarantee. Rory suggested that maybe knocking this Digimon about a bit in combat would get him to listen a bit more. Shoutmon smirked, resting his right hand on his hip. "Heh, I think we can do that just fine."
Adrian would stay behind in the forest while Shoutmon and Rory headed up to the vantage spot, their matching yellow scarves flowing perfectly in the wind. Rory started calling out for his friend Veemon, when suddenly the wooden sleeper in front of him shattered. Shoutmon ran up to his son to catch him, making sure he didn't fall backwards or, worse, over the bridge itself. They then heard a deep voice, and there Adrian and Shoutmon saw a blue centaur-like Digimon with black and red armor approaching them.
Shoutmon's face furrowed when this Digimon, who was named Sagittarimon, mentioned how if he had aimed three feet higher, Rory would be dead. He clenched his fists even more after he brought up why he didn't: because then, Shoutmon would have his "pet human" evolve him to the Mega level and kill Sagittarimon in return. He had the gall to insult Owen too, calling him a "fool dog."
If it weren't for the promise I made to Rory, you'd be dead meat, bow boy, was what Shoutmon was thinking inside his head, although it was clear that he was angry due to the glare he was giving Sagittarimon at the moment. Like Rory, Shoutmon also did his best to keep his head cool. He did promise Rory, after all.
Rory asked why Sagittarimon was planning to murder the Trailmon and all its passengers, and the archer Digimon pointed right at Adrian, stating that it was madness letting someone like him free to do to the Digital World as he pleased. Adrian sweatdropped before deciding that hiding was pointless since Sagittarimon knew he was there, so he got up and started walking towards Shoutmon and Rory with his hands held up.
So this is what racism feels like. Or is it xenophobia? Either way, this feeling is bad and I hate it.
Sagittarimon continued, defending his actions of mass murder more by stating how if this school were to continue, then in about fifty years, the humans would bring ruin to the Digital World like they have to their own world. Adrian and Shoutmon were both stunned to hear this response. Both of them had spent a long time in the human world and knew of the atrocities mankind would commit, but they also knew the Chosen humans weren't like that all.
So now they had to find a way to convince Sagittarimon of this.
"Listen to yourself, Sagittarimon," Shoutmon said. "You're justifying murdering an entire group of Digimon for your cause. Even if humans were as bad as you claim they are, which they aren't, this doesn't make you better than them. How is murder going to solve anything?"
"And our world isn't in ruin," Adrian said. "It's not perfect, sure, but we're trying our best to make life better for everyone. And humans chosen to come to your world have been some of the best people I've ever known. Our worlds aren't meant to be separate anymore, Sagittarimon. If we work together, we can make something truly amazing. That's what Rosewood and this new school is founded upon; unity between humans and Digimon to make something that neither side could make alone. Humans aren't as bad as you think they are. Please, just listen to our side before making decisions like this. Let us -- let ME -- prove to you that we won't bring ruin to the Digital World."

Rory was glad for the catch from Shoutmon. Railway bridges weren’t designed for easy pedestrian crossing, and losing balance and falling to the river below was a genuine danger. "Thanks, dad" he breathed.
Thankfully Adrian did approach and make his statement to the other digimon. Rory thought it was perfectly reasonable. There were good things about both worlds, and really, the only thing that was preventing their harmony were assholes like Sagittarimon. And whatever humans were like him in the human world, not that Rory knew much about them. Unfortunately it didn’t seem to move Sagittarimon.
“Oh you naive fool, that’s how you humans have operated since your civilizations began.” he snarled, suddenly putting on a false, light, friendly tone. “Oh, hello new people, let’s live together in peace and harmony…” then his voice returned to the growl before. “Then your grey-haired elders decide to take and take until they hold all the power once their colonial subjects lower their guard and reveal their weaknesses, then you swipe in and seize it.” he then turned to Rory. “Ask your human friend for a history book, Rory, they’ve done this for thousands of years!”
Rory didn’t need to ask, he had learned a lot about human warfare from tales of friends and family. But Shoutmon had also raised a good point. “So your solution is this, to commit mass murder, right? You disgust me. To think I once called you my friend...”
“Hah! Scorn me all you like, Rory, you can’t change what’s going to happen one way or another.” Sagittarimon spat back. Rory was initially taken aback by these words. With both him and his father here, they could defeat Sagittarimon easily, but, here was the dragon-centaur digimon facing them on with confidence. Why was that? Did he have a plan for his own defeat? He had allowed himself to be caught after all… wait, there had to be a plan behind this. Given that Sagittarimon seemed to be ideologically driven, surely there was advice that the others that had filled him with this evil propaganda had also given him. Then all at once, he realized.
“...dead man’s switch.” Rory stated, his glare intensifying. “Even if we destroy you here, the bridge will be destroyed regardless. That’s why you’re so confident, right?”
Sagittarimon’s eyes widened momentarily, then narrowed in a sneer. “That’s right, Rory. While your mutt of a teacher is misguided in his love of humans, I knew he’d send overwhelming force the moment the whiff of our plan reached his nose. So even if you do manage to kill me, this bridge will blow when the next Trailmon crosses it.”
Rory’s fists shook momentarily, then he took a deep breath, calming himself. “Well then. I’ll just have to make you disable whatever mechanisms you have set up here myself.”
“Oh is that so?” Sagittarimon asked in a sneering voice. “Just by yourself? Not having daddy have his pet human evolve him to Mega and pin me down while you get some free punches in? You think that’ll make me break in what I’m aiming for here?”
“...just what is it that you’re aiming for here?” Rory asked, by now his expression matching his mother’s when she was at her most dangerous. Despite the flames on his forehead, tail and wrists, his eyes were colder than ice.
“The start of a chain reaction.” Sagittarimon replied, surprisingly fast. “Yes, some workers and a Trailmon might be destroyed, but your human friends will be outraged and send in their usual death squads, and I doubt your precious human-digimon school would be able to function with them around.”
“Death squads?” Rory repeated, blinking in confusion. “What the hell do you mean? Human death squads?”
“Oh? Have your human friends kept you in the dark about that?” Sagittarimon asked, clearly grinning under his face mask. “What their little organization DATS did to this world a while ago?”
“DATS…” Rory repeated, frowning. “They were dispersed last I heard of them, their human leader was even arrested.” he grew some confidence from remembering this. “If anything that’s proof the humans know better now from whatever it was they did from back then.”
“It’s proof that their most recent leader was a fool that acted too quickly.” Sagittarimon countered. “Their long term goals remain the same, to plunder the digital world and subjugate all digimon, thanks to the information that sycophants like you freely provide them.”
Rory had enough of this pointless argument, he was determined to put an end to it. “So then. If you think that’s the case, then let’s fight for it. Just you and me. Leave everyone else out of it.” he raised an eyebrow in an effort to try and provoke his former friend into this situation. “That’s how the noble old way of digimon work, right? One against one, not going the sneaky human way of teaming up against those that don’t agree with you.”
“Hah, you think you can beat me now?!” Sagittarimon shot back. “What’s the idea here? You throw me off this bridge with one of the tricks you learned from the blue mutt?”
“I’ll thank you to not call Mr. Owen that anymore.” Rory replied calmly. “And we can do this on solid ground if you prefer. Here’s the wager. If you beat me, no further construction will happen to the school and you’ll have your goal reached. But if I beat you, you’ll dismantle all and every means you have set in place to destroy this bridge, and you’ll never try something like this again. We got a deal?”
“Ah, a battle like the old ways. Now you’re talking like a true digimon.” Sagittarimon replied. “To think humans have even outlawed duelling in their world. This will be perfect, I get to defeat you fair and square, and with witnesses no less!”
Rory turned to Adrian and Shoutmon, hoping that they’d go along with this. The Coronamon felt that this was really something he needed to settle this way.

With his arms crossed, Adrian felt his grip on his forearms tighten the more he heard Sagittarimon speak. He didn't have a counter argument for his point about human colonization. It was indeed true that humans did behave like that both in the past and even today in various ways. Villains like DATS and the Grandmaster also sprung to mind, cruel humans that either did exactly what Sagittarimon was accusing all humans of doing, or used Digimon for their own nefarious means. Adrian didn't know what to say...
"You say you're doing this to protect our world from the humans," Shoutmon said, "yet you decide 'yeah, it's worth it to sacrifice lives to prove my point.' I don't give a damn how noble you think your reason is, you're still in the wrong here."
Shoutmon's jaw dropped when the dead man's switch was revealed. Regardless of if they defeat Sagittarimon here, the next Trailmon that crosses this bridge was going to blow up. This was beyond sadistic in Shoutmon's eyes by this point. And the taunting from Sagittarimon about Shoutmon being evolved to Mega by his "pet human" to stop him was doing its job remarkably well. Sagittarimon was looking to start a chain reaction: Trailmon blows up, humans send in "death squads," school ceases to function.
DATS... Adrian and Shoutmon remembered their encounters with them very clearly. However, they also knew that their leader had been arrested and the group dispersed, and the good Chosen humans of Shibuya were not going to let a group like DATS exist again, but Sagittarimon was convinced that they will simply keep trying again until they get what they want. It was clear by this point that Sagittarimon was too far gone and couldn't be reasoned with. He had to be taken into some form of custody just for concocting this twisted plan alone.
Rory would then propose a challenge to Sagittarimon. A one-on-one duel, just between them. If Rory wins, every way of destroying this bridge would be dismantled, and a stunt like this would never be pulled again. If Sagittarimon wins, however, construction of the school will stop altogether. Adrian and Shoutmon both look stunned at the terms that Rory was putting on the table, and were even more stunned that Sagittarimon had accepted them.
"Rory, are you sure this is a good idea?" Shoutmon asked, quiet enough so that Sagittarimon couldn't overhear him. "Sagittarimon's already gone as far as to set up a dead man's switch, who knows if he has any other tricks we don't know about? Besides, you know we can't stop construction of the school. It would break Owen's heart to do that."
"I trust him," Adrian says. "Rory's not the type to make deals like that if he's not confident that he can win. He's trained under Owen and is the son of two of the most powerful Digimon I've ever seen, meaning he's got to have the same amount of power. I think he's got this one in the bag."
"Hmmm... yeah, you're right. Rory's got this. But still, I don't like the idea of just standing on the sidelines."
"Sagittarimon said the next Trailmon that crosses this bridge will be blown up... we could go and warn someone at the Trailmon station about his plan, so they won't send any Trailmons here for the time being. What do you think, Rory?"

Sagittarimon addressed Shoutmon. “There are times when great changes demand sacrifice, and I’m prepared to do so to make this change happen!”
“And I’ll stop you!” Rory declared, trying his best to hold his temper. He would not lose it here. Many lessons with Owen and the experiences he had in his memory from Skye and Shoutmon had proven that would make things worse. “You’ve fallen, Sagittarimon, but here, I’ll stop you before you fall beyond redemption.”
“Redemption? What do you mean by that?” Sagittarimon asked.
“You haven’t killed anyone yet, even though you’re attempting to.” Rory pointed out, speaking in a gentler voice. “You can back down from this, right now if you want. Just tell us how you mean to destroy this bridge, and who put all these evil thoughts in your head. You will be held in custody for taking it this far, I won’t lie about that, but, just please, consider your best way out of this. I’m sorry for hurting you all that long ago, I shouldn’t have lost my temper…”
Sagittarimon by now was shaking a little. There was hesitation. Shoutmon then asked Rory if he was sure about this.
“I’m sure, dad.” Rory replied. “This is how it has to be. I have to stop him myself, if only to make up for the path I put him on.”
Rory was glad that Adrian backed him up in this, given that it was clear that it would take more than the words of a human to dissuade him. And while Shoutmon didn’t like standing on the sidelines, Adrian’s idea to go forward and warn any approaching Trailmon to not approach.
“That’s a good idea, they have to go slow in this area, you should be able to stop them in time.” Rory said, thinking that’d be a perfect job for Adrian and Shoutmon. “Oh, Adrian, you should wave your jacket on a clear stretch of track, trains know that a red flag is a sign to stop.” He then turned back to Sagittarimon. “So then. We’ll take this to your side of the bridge, if we’re gonna do this.”
“Fine by me.” Sagittarimon replied, and turned, somewhat awkwardly, Rory noticed. How could such a digimon have rigged this bridge to be destroyed? He didn’t seem particularly nimble, and even as a Veemon he didn’t do particularly well in the training courses for agility. But he had to focus now. He had no doubt that in his armor form he was strong. So once they were clear on the far bank, they opposed each other, ready for the fight.
“So, you ready?” Rory asked, keeping his voice and stance steady.
“Very much so.” Sagittarimon replied, and a glowing golden longbow appeared on his left claw. “You broke my nose once, Rory, I’m ready with bells on to do the same to you.”
Rory could tell that he wasn’t joking, he could see where he was aiming, straight at his face. If an arrow struck him there, he’d be destroyed on the spot. And given Sagittarimon had the advantage of ranged combat, Rory had to make sure to make his first move count. Sure enough, Sagittarimon drew his bow with an arrow formed, then fired, just as expected at his face. Rory was prepared for this, diving to the right, then when in a controlled roll, roared ”Shining Time!” and at once his body burst with strong flames, the orange turning blue, his fires intensifying.
“So you intend to finish this quickly?” Sagittarimon asked, readying another arrow, tracking Rory’s movements, then fired at what he thought would be his destination, but Rory instantly reacted by jumping in the air, his fire-wrists bursting with flames.
”Fire Stream!” Rory snarled, as blue flames spiraled up through his body into the air, coalescing in a cloud of fire, then burst forth a pillar of flame down on Sagittarimon, who grunted in pain from the attack. Rory landed, but knew things would go downhill fast. Sagittarimon quickly caught on that trying to shoot him as fast as he was was pointless, so he took advantage of Rory needing to catch his breath after his initial onslaught by stampeding toward him, aiming to close the distance and crush him with his massively bigger body. Rory tried to dodge-dive it, but his opponent changed trajectory easily and managed to stomp on his arm before he could clear it.
The pain was immense. Rory screamed in pain, he tried to move his fingers, but he couldn’t. A broken bone. But he had one thing left up his sleeve, recovering from the pain enough to clear his mind.
“You haven’t forgotten I can heal, right?” he asked, as me moved the healing ring on his tail to his arm. The bone mended, but was still fragile. His healing wasn’t yet strong enough to fully recover from an attack like that.
“Clever, but you won’t be able to do that forever.” Sagittarimon responded. Rory tried to hide that he acknowledged this fact to be true. Instead, he focused on the lessons Owen taught him, that he remembered from his parents, this was not over yet.
Meanwhile, it seemed that a Trailmon Mole had not received the memo that the route ahead was dangerous. He grumbled as he approached the speed sign to slow down before crossing the bridge over the river to the new School. Well, all that mattered for his paycheck was to get this crew of engineers and worker digimon there safely, so that’s what he would do.

Despite everything that Sagittarimon had done or was planning to do up to this point, Rory still seemed to believe that he could be redeemed. He pleaded for his old friend to end this in the best possible way, and there was even a brief moment of hesitation from the archer that Adrian had noticed. Rory was also positive that he had to be the one to fight Sagittarimon, if for nothing else but to make up for the path he put his friend on.
"Don't blame yourself like that," Shoutmon said, placing a hand on Rory's shoulder. "You two may have gotten into a fight, but his actions are not yours to take blame for." Shoutmon then smiled at his son. "I believe in you, kid."
Rory also agreed with Adrian on warning any potential Trailmons coming through about the rigged-to-blow bridge. Rory went over to Sagittarimon's side of the bridge for the duel while Adrian pulled out his Digivice and summoned his dune buggy two-seat vehicle, getting into the driver's side while Shoutmon hopped in the passenger's side. Adrian turned his head to look behind him to where Rory and Sagittarimon would be.
"Good luck, Rory," Adrian said. He activated the vehicle and pressed his foot on the acceleration pedal, driving the dune buggy away from the fight. As luck would have it, the two of them would have a bit of time to chat as they drove.
"This has to be so hard for Rory," Adrian said to his partner. "To see your friend fighting for something awful like that..."
"Who does that guy think he is, anyways?!" Shoutmon angrily asked, the wind blowing his scarf. "He can't actually believe what he's doing is noble, can he? He wants to murder innocent people just to start some chain reaction. He doesn't care about lives at all, and he seriously pisses me off."
"And you think I'm not angry, either? The guy called me your 'pet human,' for fuck's sake. Whatever anti-Chosen group got to him really warped his mind, if he was friends with Rory to begin with. Rory wouldn't befriend assholes like him, that's for sure. But this is Rory's situation, not ours, and we need to let him handle it his own way. The most we can do is just be there when he does need us."
"Yeah, yeah, yeah..." Shoutmon grumbled. "Doesn't mean I have to like it. He's my kid, and I don't like seeing him be hurt. I don't get to be involved much in his life, since he's usually with Owen, and it's not like he tells me anything."
"I don't tell my parents everything either, and they still trust me, even now. Don't take it personally, okay? He loves you, just like the rest of us."
And it would be at this point that Adrian would spot the Trailmon Mole, who appeared to not get the memo that this area was dangerous. Adrian slid the goggles on his forehead over his eyes before kicking it into overdrive with his red colored vehicle. He quickly caught up with the Trailmon Mole before turning around, the driver's side being parallel with the Trailmon Mole.
"TRAILMON, STOP!" Adrian could call out to the large train Digimon. "TRAILMON! THE BRIDGE UP AHEAD, IT'S NOT SAFE! YOU NEED TO STOP NOW!"

Rory smiled back at his father. That he had this trust in him, it made him more confident that this would work. As Adrian and Shoutmon left the scene and their duel began, Rory tried his best to hold his ground, but it wasn’t easy against the giant armored dragon-centaur. Sagittarimon weighed about the same as a car and had broken his arm from simply stomping on it, but Rory’s healing abilities kept him in the fight. “So is this your strategy? Flail about and heal yourself from whatever damage I inflict until I take pity on you?” Sagittarimon asked, almost lazily arming another arrow and fired it in Rory’s general direction without aiming. Rory could tell from his training that the arrow wasn’t aimed at him, so he stood his ground without flinching. “Well if that’s the case I might as well blow the bridge now and be done with this charade. As you say, I won’t kill anyone, but it sure will be inconvenient for you…”“You will do no such thing!” Rory snarled, his fires glowing white, his tailring glowing. He knew this was his last opportunity to launch this attack, that he had learned from his mother. He drew energy not only from the sun above, but the earth below, blue-white streams of light erupting like snakes and converged on his opponent. “W-what is this?!” Sagittarimon asked, having initially tried to turn around to the bridge, but found quickly that Rory’s attack was preventing him from moving. “HOLY!” Rory snarled, and as though guiding the streams of light with his hands, clasped them together. “Holy what-” Sagittarimon asked, then figured out what was happening an instant later. A razing, white-hot stream of energy engulfed him all at once, delivering enormous pain. Rory panted, satisfied that he had brought him to his knees, but he turned to glare with him with a look of utmost hatred. “You little bastard… you’ll pay for that!” he snarled, and launched another arrow at him. Rory was able to dodge it, but only just, he realized his chest was heaving from all the energy spent in these last few attacks, and the effects of his “Shining Time” ability that caused his attacks to be powered up had run out, his flames turning back to orange from the blue they were. He realized he was probably in a lot of trouble here, since his Holy attack hadn’t done as much damage as he hoped to his armored opponent.
The Trailmon Mole that was heading toward the bridge quickly paid attention to Adrian and Shoutmon. While he was focused on his paycheck initially, being warned that a bridge ahead wasn’t safe to cross was something that snatched his attention quickly. “The bridge?! Oh no! I can’t swim!” he thought as he applied his brakes. ”Oh, and the passengers I’m bringing along too, they probably won’t like it...”Still though, he came to a stop in front of Adrian and Shoutmon. “What’s the problem?” he asked, hoping they could come up with a fix quickly. If the Trailmon had to go back in reverse, he’d have to do annoyingly slowly. Then he saw the flashes of the fight happening ahead. “Oh… oh that’s not good.” traveling through a battlefield was definitely against the code of operations for Trailmons. “Hey, wait a minute, you said somethin’ didn’t you?” a new voice spoke. A wooden golem digimon stepped down from the carriage that the Trailmon was pulling. “The bridge ain’t safe? How so? Oh, the name’s Arbormon, I’m the chief engineer here. I’m meant to be workin’ on the school today, but if the bridge ain’t safe, I can maybe help solve that.”Arbormon paused as he saw the flashes of the fight ahead. “...just as long as we stay clear of whatever’s happenin’ there.” he added.
Sagittarimon was seething with rage from Rory’s Holy attack. It brought him back to their days in school, where this little orange punk regularly dodged and parried his direct physical attacks and countered with magic tricks like this, and “Mr. Owen” declared Rory’s strategy to be superior. He spat venomous words at Rory in response. “Trick you learned from mommy, eh?” he asked, turning back to face him. “Sanctioned by daddy, right? Oh, by daddy I assume “Mister Owen” rather than that red idiot back there?”“You shut your fucking face.” Rory responded, surprised at his own outrage at this insult. Sagittarimon grinned with the knowledge he had got under Rory’s skin. “What? So offended? Don’t lie to yourself, you think of ‘Mister Owen’ much more as your dad than Loudmon or whatever his name is.” Sagittarimon continued. "Face it, you think of yourselves as a lovely little fake human family when you're not."“Don’t you…” Rory growled, trembling as he struggled to contain the rage he felt from those words. “Don’t you dare insult my family like that…” he would have attacked if he hadn’t been somewhat exhausted from launching his charged Holy attack, as well as the lingering pain from using a simple healing spell to mend a broken bone so quickly. But he could feel from the start not to react to these lies. He knew who his real parents were. Skye and Shoutmon. While Owen had been his teacher, he never thought of him as a father figure. Shoutmon was always there for him when he needed. He and Owen were friends, and Owen always kept a professional relationship with him, not like Shoutmon, who would fully give his familial love and care whenever Rory needed it. ”Focus that anger. Control it.” he could feel his mother’s data. ”And use it to kick that bastard’s ass!” he could feel his father’s data. Rory took a deep breath, then as he exhaled, he felt something exceedingly warm pulse from deep within his digicore. He glared daggers at Sagittarimon. “My parents are Skye and Shoutmon…” he said in a tempered, loud voice, and as he did so, the flame on his left wrist burst with yellow flame. “My brothers are Luneth and Gem…” the flame on his right wrist also burst with golden light. “My teacher is Mr. Owen…” the flame on his tail was the next to burst with this energy. “And my friends… everyone I’ve grown to love…” the flame on his forehead was the next to erupt with energy. “I WILL NOT LET YOU DESTROY THE THINGS WE CARE ABOUT!!”Thoughts rushed through his mind, what would happen if Sagittarimon was allowed to succeed, the chain of devastation and despair that would follow. No. He couldn’t lose to a cause like this. All this emotion, he drew back into his core, and then he felt it. His body transforming, growing in both size and power. Such a display made Sagittarimon freeze in place, his red eyes wide with both horror and awe. “CORONAMON DIGIVOLVE TO…!!” Rory grew three times in size from four feet to twelve feet, his muscles swelling, his jacket ripping, only to be replaced with armor. His golden mane grew so long it fell all the way down his back, and as the transformation ended, he roared his new form’s name.
“...FLAREMON!!” Sagittarimon was now the one to tremble, Rory’s heightened senses could hear the rattle of his armor as he did so. “Scared now, are you?” he asked, his voice now a deep rumble. “We can do this the easy way or the hard way. De-digivolve to your Rookie level, Veemon, and surrender on your own accord, or I’ll make you.”“I… I can’t.” Sagittarimon replied, sounding hesitant as though he wanted to say more. He raised his bow again. “You might have digivolved, Rory, but that doesn’t mean you’ve won yet.”“That’s a shame.” Rory said, flicking his tail. He saw that he still had the healing ring attached to it that he had inherited from his mother. “You’ll live to regret those words. You should fear digimon that know how to heal…” he narrowed his fierce blue eyes. “Because we know how to put you back together after we break you.”From these words, Rory could swear he could see fear form on Sagittarimon's masked face.

Adrian was thankful that the Trailmon Mole understood how serious this situation was, and stopped without any kind of hassle at all. He pulled up the dune buggy next to the Trailmon and lifted his goggles back to their usual position above his eyes. When Trailmon asked what the problem was, Adrian was about to respond... until the bright flashes of light caught their attention.
"Rory..." Shoutmon muttered, concerned for his son. With these flashes of light, he couldn't tell what was happening in the fight from this distance.
A new voice suddenly spoke out. It was a passenger from the Trailmon, a wooden golem-like Digimon named Arbormon. He was the chief engineer, and he offered to help work on the bridge if it wasn't safe. As long as they stayed clear away from the fight going on ahead, of course.
"I'm Adrian Boriker, and this is my partner Shoutmon," Adrian said to Arbormon. "Follow us, we can take you to the bridge out of sight from the fighters."
He would then turn the dune buggy back on and start driving, slow enough to let Arbormon keep up with him assuming that he had his own method of transportation. As they traveled, Adrian explained the whole situation to Arbormon.
"It's an anti-human terrorist group. One of their members, a Sagittarimon, rigged the bridge to blow up the moment a Trailmon heading to the school crossed it. His ultimate goal is making sure that the school isn't built, whether it be because all the workers are killed or because us Chosen fight him and his group instead. Right now, a Coronamon named Rory is fighting him in a one-on-one duel to keep him occupied."
"You should've heard the way he talked about humans," Shoutmon added. "He called Adrian my 'pet human' and is convinced that the school being built will start some doomsday scenario that I can assure you won't happen. So, do you really think you can defuse whatever bombs Sagittarimon put on the bridge?"

Arbormon was satisfied at their introductions. Given that the Trailmon wasn’t going anywhere in a hurry, he then called his crew off the carriage.
“Golemon, Ogremon, you two stay here and protect our ride.” he said to the two biggest digimon there, figuring they won’t be much use for stealthily approaching the bridge. The Trailmon seemed much relieved about this. “The rest of you, let’s follow Adrian and Shoutmon. Don’t worry too much about not bein’ seen, looks like it’s a one-against-one up ahead, as long as we don’t get directly in their way we should be fine, I’ve seen enough barfights to know how these things go.”
They would then follow the two through the forest away from the main line. When Arbormon caught a clear view of the fighters, he was glad they hadn’t simply trundled through that battlefield. He listened to Adrian’s explanation.
“Ugh, these pricks again…” Arbormon grumbled as the familiar story was raised. “Ever since we built Rosewood from nothin’ they’ve been salty about it. They wanna live the wild life, they’ve got the rest of the Timberlands to settle in, but no, it’s “civilization weakens us” this and “humans are bad” that. Pathetic really.”
Shoutmon asked if they could really de-fuse the charges on the bridge. “Well as long as we don’t get fired at, yep, we sure can. We’ve all handled explosives before, we helped restore this railroad back into function in the first place, and that involved blastin’ a few banks and such when we couldn’t move obstacles any other way. Might be safer to just detach ‘em and throw ‘em in the river, not like they can blow up when they’re soakin’ wet.”
They passed the battle and Arbormon could see what was happening through the trees. “Yeesh, a Sagittarimon and Flaremon, might have to fix up the railroad when they’re done too.” he remarked. “But my money’s on the Flaremon, given how the other guy’s shakin’.”
He and his work crew would continue toward the bridge as Rory and Sagittarimon continued to stare each other down. But he turned to Shoutmon after a little while.
“I’m guessin’ that’s your son there, right?” he asked. “Might wanna stay and watch. Maybe not draw attention to yourself unless you need it. Just leave the bridge to us.”
As the seconds went by, Sagittarimon noticed how Rory didn’t seem to make a move. This was unnerving. “W-what? Are you waiting for me to strike first?” he asked, trying not to stammer.
“I’m waiting for your surrender.” Rory replied, simply. “The sooner it happens, the better it’ll be for you in the end.”
It was Sagittarimon’s turn to transform his fear into anger. “The end…? You talk as though the battle’s already won…” he raised his longbow to position it into an attack.
“Don’t do it.” Rory warned, all warmth in his voice gone. But Sagittarimon seemed intent to push through his attack, loading an arrow of light in his bow and charged it.
”Starfall Arr-”
“I SAID DON’T DO IT!!” Rory roared with such intensity that the ground shook. This was his Purifying Roar attack, which aimed to disrupt the data of the enemy digimon so they wouldn’t be able to gather enough of their composure to use one of their special attacks. At once, the light arrow Sagittarimon was conjuring dissipated.
Rory panted with that done, glaring at the centaur dragon digimon. “There’s only so much warnings I can give before you start getting hurt, Veemon. I’ll say it again. Surrender now and let this madness end.”
Unfortunately calling him that seemed to be a mistake. Sagittarimon immediately shook from his stunned state and stampeded toward him in rage. “My NAME is SAGITTARIMON!!” he snarled, and while Rory was too big to run down as he was as Coronamon, he aimed to strike him with his fists. Rory narrowed his eyes and raised his hands to catch them, then threw Sagittarimon to his side, using the momentum from his charge against him. While he stumbled, the archer digimon managed to remain on his feet. It was harder to take down a quadruped than a biped this way after all.
“It’s… it’s not fair…” Sagittarimon muttered to himself.
“Hm? What was that?” Rory asked, hearing vaguely what he was saying. “Something about it not being fair? Why? That you don’t get to blow up bridges and kill innocents?”
“It’s not fair… that YOU GET EVERYTHING AND I GET NOTHING!!” Sagittarimon snarled. “You have a family! You were that stupid dog teacher’s pet! You lured me in with your charm and pretended to be my friend!”
“Vee- Sagittarimon, I was your friend until you started acting like a jerk!” Rory shouted in response. “I get it, you’re jealous of everything I have and I’m sorry it turned out that way, I wanted to be your friend and shared what I have with you, but you acted in a way I couldn’t accept!”
“Then accept this! Judgement Arrow!” Sagittarimon suddenly raised his bow again, Rory’s Purifying Roar effect fading and fired an arrow of digizoid at his face. All Rory could do to stop it was to block it with his hand by reflex, and grunted with pain as it pierced his hand. Not a fatal wound, but a very painful one. He glared at the enemy in response.
”Conflagration” he snarled, the fires on his head and shoulders intensifying and burst outwards, surrounding Sagittarimon with fire that spiralled inward until it burst in the middle, making him scream with agony as the magical flame attack made its mark. As the flames faded, parts of his armor were glowing red from the heat.
“Attack again and things will be worse for you…” Rory promised, the flames having the additional effect of reducing the wooden shaft of the arrow shot through his hand to ash, its chrome digizoid tip falling to the ground, but the wound was still there and throbbing painfully.
