"Go out and find what you have lost. Once you have reclaimed that, return and I will give you your farewell gift." Hiro said in a rough false gravely voice. He was trying to imitate Cherrymon, and if he was honest, he was doing a poor job of it. Well, at least Tetsu was amused. The Chibimon was riding on his customary place on his head since Hiro had left his bag back in the Village of Beginnings. "The old tree is getting senile. I haven't really lost anything."
"I don't know." Tetsu said as he looked down at his partner. "I kind of get what he's saying."
"Oh?"
"Hiro... we've kind of in a rut." Tetsu said slowly. He tugged on his partner's hair idly as he put his thoughts into words. "We originally came to the Digital World for answers, remember? We were going to research the Digivice and partners and Spirits in case we ran into Carrie again."
"Yeah?"
"And we haven't done any of that. We went to Terminus once and it was to learn about why I changed."
"Ugh, don't remind me. We could have just asked Cherrymon and saved ourself the trouble." Hiro grumbled under his breathe. He should have known that the care taker of the Village of Beginnings would know why a Digimon changed after bieng reformatted.
"See, there. That's it exactly." Tetsu leaned over so that his arm hung over Hiro's eyes. "All we've been doing is hanging around the Village and taking care of the babies. Hiro, we came here to learn and grow. We came here to fight evil. We-"
"Got you killed!" Hiro interrupted with a shout. Tetsu stopped and realized that Hiro was shaking. "We came here for five minutes, found a bad guy and guess what, I got you killed."
Hiro looked down at his own trembling hands and shoved them into his pocket. Damnit, he thought he had gotten past this. Didn't he say it while trapped in Cherrymon's fog (note to self, punch Cherrymon for that later). He needed to move forward. Hiro chuckled sadly. Well, it was easier said than done.
Tetsu paused before hopping off of Hiro's head. He glowed in midair and grew from a plush size doll to the size of a small child. V-mon looked up at his partner solemnly.
"Hiro..."
"I ran Tetsu. I just ran. You got deleted and I couldn't do anything. The guys who did it. They're still out there. They could be hurting other people and I just... gah. I can't do anything about it."
"We said we were going to show them right from wrong." Hiro laughed softly as something came to mind. "Justice without power is inefficient. I remember hearing that somewhere. I think I get it now."
"We can-"
"Do what? We didn't get any stronger. We're weaker than before Tetsu. I don't know what you can do and you haven't had any time to get accustom to your new body. If we fought them again, guess what? We'd die even quicker." Hiro was panting by the time he had finished yelling.
"Hiro..." Tetsu called his partner's name sadly. He shook his head and gather up his resolve. No, this was not the time for pity. He needed to set his partner straight. "What do you want Hiro?"
Hiro stopped when his partner asked that million dollar question. He didn't know what he wanted, did he. He was just going day by day at the Village hoping something would happen. But nothing had. What did he want?
He knew the answer to that question. He wasn't stupid. He had thought about it. It was just that the answer was so childish and simple that Hiro had dismissed it. But it hadn't gone away. He still wanted the same thing.
"We're at a crossroads, Hiro." Tetsu said and gestured around them. They had walked out of the Village and gotten to the first fork in the road. It was an odd coincidence, but Tetsu was going to use it all the same. "What do you want do do?"
There was silence as neither of them spoke. Tetsu stayed silent because he knew that Hiro needed to come to terms with this by himself. Hiro, he struggled to find the confidence to admit his own childish wants out loud. After a few tense minutes, Tetsu wondered if he had screwed up when Hiro opened his mouth.
"I want to protect people." Hiro admitted the truth quietly, almost as afraid that if he spoke to loudly the words would be snatched from his lips. "I hate it when I see people get hurt and I want to stop that. I want to fight evil, I want to help those in need, I want to show people that there are those with power who will help them."
"But I can't do that." Hiro said in despair.
"We can't do that yet." Tetsu corrected. Hiro looked at his partner in surprise. "What did you say earlier. Justice without power is inefficient. Then the answer is simple, we'll just gain power. We'll get stronger."
"Tetsu..." Hiro said his partner's name quietly. Tetsu just stared at him resolved eyes. Hiro looked away filled with a bit of shame, but nodded his head. "Yeah... yeah. You're right."
"Of course." Tetsu said like it was matter of fact.
"Alright then." Hiro swallowed his doubts and declared his intentions. "We'll fight for justice than. But first..."
"But first?"
"We need to go back to Cherrymon and get our farewell gift." Hiro said as he rubbed the back of his head.
V-mon facefaulted into the ground. All of that and their first decision was to turn back. Oh well, baby steps.
---
"Oi, that was quick." Cherrymon stood in front of the gate to the Village of Beginnings as he saw Hiro and Tetsu return. The blue dragon back to his In-Training form on top of Hiro's head. He watched the boy closely and noticed that his steps were just a tad bit firmer.
"Yeah, it's amazing what a lack of fog and hallucinations of my family will do for travel time." Hiro said dryly.
Cherrymon laughed at that. "Aye, but you needed them illusions boy. You weren't going to listen to me, so I improvised."
"Che, I get you." Hiro scowled at the memory of the illusions. It wasn't exactly his best moment and the fact that Cherrymon was there kind of made him angry. Like the Digimon had walked into a private moment.
"But enough about that. Get over here boy. Let's see if you've gotten it back." Cherrymon ordered. Hiro walked in front of the tree and looked up at him. His eyes were firm, his body didn't tremble, and there was a fire in his eyes again. It wasn't a large fire, but it was a start. There was purpose behind Hiro again.
"Ha. That's better. That's the eyes of the boy I was expecting." Cherrymon's entire body rumbled as he laughed.
"Expecting?"
"Aye boy. This damn thing has been bothering me since you got here." Cherrymon reached into his branches and pulled out a small object. It was a white and gold egg shaped in the form of an old fashion balance scale. "The Digimental of Justice, it's been waiting for you."
"Digimental of- no wait." Hiro paused and glared up at the tree. "You've had this the entire time. Why are you giving it to me now?"
"Well for one. You didn't deserve it earlier." Cherrymon said bluntly. "I didn't see anything that resembled Justice in you before. You were just a lost boy walking around without purpose." Hiro had the decency to look a bit embarrassed at that harsh truth. "But now, well you've got a hint of Justice behind those eyes. Enough that I can trust you with this."
Hiro accepted the Digimental and swallowed at the weight. It felt odd. Like it should be much lighter than it felt, but he was doing something wrong.
"You said 'for one.' Were there other reasons?" Tetsu chirped curiously.
"Ah, yes. Secondly. I thought I would get some free labor out of you boys." Cherrymon admitted shamelessly.
That broke Hiro out of his examination of the Digimental as he stared at the tree in disbelief. "Are you serious?"
"Eeyup. I got to say, it was nice ordering you around. Like a mini vacation." The Cherrymon tree grinned down at the boy before turning around. "Now skedaddle. I've got mouths to feed and I'm pretty sure the boy has family to reunite with."
"You... I... argh!" Hiro nearly threw the Digimental at Cherrymon's back in frustration before he calmed down. He also turned around to start his walk back towards Terminus when he remembered something. He tilted his head back and called one last thing to the Village of Beginning's caretaker. "Oi, old man! Thanks!"
Cherrymon kept walking, but threw up an arm in acknowledgement. Hiro thought he saw the Digimon pause before doing so, but he was probably just seeing things.
"Well, that was pointless." Hiro said as he hefted the Digimental. It was odd but it seemed to have a presence to it. Hiro admired it before he realized something. "Wait, did Cherrymon tell us what we're supposed to do with this?"
Tetsu tilted his head as he recalled the entire conversation before happily chirping, "Nope."
Hiro groaned. Great, that was another question they needed to answer. Ugh, whatever. He would let future Hiro deal with it. For now, he needed to start his journey back to the Real World. He had a brother to inform of his status as alive.
"I don't know." Tetsu said as he looked down at his partner. "I kind of get what he's saying."
"Oh?"
