It was late into the night in the Digital World and a strange storm had rendered Toki lost in the middle the deeper parts of the forest. “I just wanted to get back to Rosewood to see how things were before going home…but this is just too much. I need to open a portal and get out of here.” He said. He brought out his digivice and much to his confusion, the screen was glitching out horribly and he couldn’t access any of the tools available. Thankfully his spirit was unaffected “Hey, what’s wrong in there?”
“I’m…not sure. I don’t feel any different, but many functions are currently disabled. I don’t like this at all. We should find shelter. Is there anywhere nearby that would make for a good place to rest until the portal function comes back online?” his spirit asked.
Toki looked around and eventually saw a light in the distance. Hoping it would be a place he could take shelter in, he found himself a little less optimistic when he came across a large, dilapidated building. “I’m not sure which is safer…staying out here in the cold, or possibly stepping on shattered glass or falling through rotten floorboards…” Toki felt the cold chill him to the bone as the rain crashed down harder around him “Okay, old mansion it is.” He reluctantly stated as he stepped up to the door.
Already something felt off about this. The second Toki touched the handle of the door, it swings open and a gust of wind pushed him inside. The door slams and locks itself, leaving him stranded inside. The windows were suddenly in top condition, and the glass wasn’t going to break with anything he could do as a human. “I really don’t like this.” He muttered.
“Toki, I don’t want to alarm you, but you do not have access to your spirits right now. Something is interfering with them. And it has something to do with this mansion. Be careful…please. There’s nothing I can do to help you right now.”
Toki frowned at the news that he was rather defenseless at the moment, but at least he was out of the cold. Oddly enough the house was cozy and looked intact from the inside. His footsteps echoed across the winding hallways as he searched the whatever was jamming his digivice. Quiet. Stillness. Nothing was here. Then why was it so immaculate? No matter how many rooms Toki found, he didn’t feel any more secure. Fully furnished, lit, and calming, he wondered if something had taken pity on him or was simply luring him into a false sense of security. Eventually, he found himself in a bedroom. It looked so inviting right about now, but worried that this would just bring him further into a trap. There was nothing out of the ordinary though. It was a furnished room with a large bed and even a bookcase at its side. Still, he reluctantly closed the door and kept moving.
Soon he finds himself in front of two large doors leading somewhere. He pushes against them with all of his might. The doors squeak loudly on their hinges as a large dining hall awaited him on the other side. He took a few more steps forward and the doors slammed behind him. Candlemon and Bakemon fluttered around him, cackling loudly “It’s him! The one who claims to be oh so virtuous!” a collective of voices taunts. “A liar or the real deal? Is he truly so strong? Or is he just a coward who hides behind his precious borrowed power?!”
Borrowed power. He hated that phrase so much. “Don’t say it’s borrowed…” he said weakly.
“But it is! Borrowed. You’re no Digimon, you’re just a pretender! A faker!” they chanted at him relentlessly “Faker!”
Toki grit his teeth and slammed his fist against the table “I am what I am! A human who can become a Digimon! Why does that make my efforts lesser than anyone else’s, huh?!” he breathed heavily, having lost his temper. Fear and sadness gave way to anger “Someone here has been watching me, haven’t they? You all know what I’m insecure about and want to tear me down…”
“He thinks he can take us! What a joke! What a fool!” the Candlemons start spiraling fireballs all over the room before all of the lights extinguish, leaving Toki in a dark void.
He stood fast and heard the loud, heavy stomps and an ominous blue glow in the distance. The rattling of chains preluded the approach of a SkullMeramon who towered over Toki’s human form, though he still would not budge. “All you do is walk around and poke your nose in business that isn’t yours…like all the rest of the humans. You ever stop to think that you all forcing your own thoughts on us is doing more harm than good?”
“No.” Toki responded bluntly. “All I want…all I want is peace and happiness. I want to better myself and help others around me reach goals.”
“Oh, so you’re looking for some kind of self-validation…” the large Digimon huffed. More loud cackling echoed in the void “How pathetic! Let’s see how he deals with this!” they scream out as chains lock Toki in place as visions of past events play. He’s forced to watch as alternate scenarios play out where he either wasn’t there or failed to help in any meaningful way. Failing to get his totems…gravely injuring one of his friends when his beast spirit went berserk.
“Stop it! Those didn’t happen…!” he screamed as he shook his head.
“Why do you keep coming back here?! You fight and you fight and you search and you search! What’s the purpose?! If you keep going, then something like this will happen and it will be your fault for getting involved!”
Toki was silent as he mulled over what SkullMeramon had said. Then he looked up at them, a fire in his eyes that would put theirs to shame “Then I’ll grow from it. Everyone will. I won’t stop fighting for what I believe in. I’ve made so many friends. I’ve grown so much as a person. For me to leave just because you’re trying to tear me down and scare me away would be disrespectful to everything I’ve done!”
His voice echoed. There was silence for a few moments before another voice responded in the distance “Precisely. Now…” a large book floated down and opened to reveal a robed figure. Wisemon. “Stop tormenting my guest, or would you want to spend some time in Eternal Nirvana…?” a couple of stones levitates near SkullMeramon, who freezes in fear. “N-No Wisemon, I’m sorry!” they immediately devolve into a Candlemon and float away in terror.
The room lit up again and Toki found himself unchained and sitting at the dining room table across from Wisemon. “You’ll have to forgive some of them. This place exists and doesn’t at the same time. I have heard of your exploits…you have fought to destroy those hideous towers on some occasions and you seem to respect the Digimon you face. Though my subordinates were also doing their job. This was a test of character. How would someone like you fare when confronted with pessimism and doubt. And you performed very well. Conviction and determination are powerful tools. But take care they do not lead you to overconfidence. Slow and insidious that is…” he chuckled. “It’s taken a lot of my energy to suppress your digivice’s power, but something about this particular time of your human year makes strange things happen. You should have full access to your capabilities. Do take care of yourself. And good luck on the tumultuous roads ahead.” He laughed.
Toki found himself blinking before suddenly being outside in the warm sun. The mansion was no where to be seen.
“Toki? Toki! Are you alright? I lost my connection with you. It was suffocating…are you well?”
“Y-yeah. I’m fine. Thank you…hey. If I start getting overconfident or start doing things you don’t agree with…knock some sense into me okay?”
“Well…I don’t know how I would be able to do that but…I will think of something. But I’m sure I will not have to anytime soon. You must be tired. The portal function is active once more. Let’s go home.”
Toki smiled and activated a portal home. He stepped through, thinking about what Wisemon had said. But now was the time for rest. After that ordeal, he was ready to sleep the day away.
