"L-Lizzie, wait," Shizuka called out pleadingly as she hurried after her stepsister, who was stomping through the woods angrily, occasionally kicking out at any fallen branch, rock or other miscellaneous object unfortunate enough to be in her path. "It's getting late," she pointed out. It was well into evening and combined with the overcast weather, it was rapidly getting darker. "We....we should head back home," Shizuka tried to assert, only to get a dismissive snort from Lizzie.
"Go on home then. Nobody's forcing you to follow me around," she snapped, letting another kick fly at a nearby tree and dislodging a light rain of leaves. Shizuka quickly stepped back out of the tree's shadow but didn't leave.
"I just think we should go back soon. Mother and your father might worry if you're out late without telling them," she tried to reason with the other girl, without success.
"They both ought to know I can take care of myself. Not my problem if they panic every time I go for a walk," Lizzie shot back irritably, drawing back her boot to kick for another kick at a bush. Shizuka sighed worriedly, glancing up at the darkening sky before looking back at Lizzie. As she did, she caught sight of the target of LIzzie's next kick and her eyes widened.
"Wait! Stop!" she shouted in alarm. Startled by the uncharacteristic shouting, Lizzie reflexively tried to spin around while still balanced on one foot and trying to abort her kick. Her legs got tangled together in the process and she fell hard to the ground, grunting in irritation as she landed on her read before shooting a glare at Shizuka.
"What in the hell are you havin' a poody about now?" she yelled, jumping to her feet and storming up to the shyer girl, fists clenched at her side. Shizuka shrank away, eyes wide in panic as she raised a hand to point back at the bush.
"Th-there's an egg," she hastily stammered in explanation, drawing Lizzie up short. "You were going to hit it," she added as Lizzie looked over her shoulder back at the bush. Sure enough, resting at the base of the bush and partially covered by its branches was an egg, though not an ordinary one. Aside from the fact that it was far larger than any egg that Shizuka had ever seen, it was also a leafy green color, hence why Lizzie had initially missed it.
Curious enough to be distracted from her previously stormy mood, she approached the bush and dropped down on her haunches, reaching out to pick it up and extract it from the bush. It felt about natural for an egg, though it was lighter in her hands than she would have expected. "What exactly are you then?" she asked aloud while Shizuka dithered a short distance away.
CR-ACK!
