Owen stood back and watched the students take out their attacks on the dummies. Kohaku and Ruri pulled off their shots well enough, they were accurate, they would be damaging, that was what Owen expected from child level digimon.
But the Gaomon took attention when Kohaku and Ruri seemed to be preparing Gem for his turn. He didn’t like it at all, this was meant to be an exercise in letting each of his students show off their individual abilities, but here they seemed to be encouraging him to exceed that limit.
Still though, Owen watched carefully to see what happened. And it seemed that what happened was that Gem would make a very powerful attack that sent the training dummy into a daze for a few moments, before it resumed its ready defense position.
Owen was about to comment about it, but stopped when he felt his son Haku tap his shoulder. After exchanging looks, Owen gave a nod to indicate that it was fine for Haku to speak first. And so Haku spoke his speech, demonstrating the value of selecting targets for ranged attacks.
“Yes, excellent point there, Haku!” Owen commended his son. “The target of your attack is extremely important. You can charge it up all you like, but if it misses, it was pretty much pointless. And, my apologies for your example here, Gem, but that powerful blast you launched there. What would you have been able to do if the opponent dodged?”
Rory recognized this training from his own experience with Owen, how it was a bad idea to fire off strong attacks without first scouting out the best means of landing the hit, hence he remained silent as this lesson was given to his little brother.
“Best rangefind first, then fire off those big spicy photon attacks.” Rory advised.
Owen approved of these talks, then would advise them to try again. “Let’s do another round, but keep your attacks moderate. Aim the best you can, then fire. Don’t go overboard.” he advised. "Remember, if you go too far for one chance, you might not get a second. Scale your attacks accordingly, keep the momentum of the battle in your control!"
