Young Digimon Combat 101 [Meta/Invite]

It would be a warm day today, Owen knew as he awoke at dawn. He could hear the gusts of wind blowing up from the south, bringing with it the summer weather. The Gaomon hoped that it wouldn’t be too hot though, even in the shade of the Rosewood parklands where he would hold his classes, mostly in the shade, he knew that if the temperature got too high then most educational value was lost on the class and they’d be better off just playing games.
Thankfully, it didn’t get too hot that day, so Owen would send messages to his students that they would convene that morning. He was prepared at 8am for the early arrivals, mostly consisting of digimon freshly evolved to Child level from the Village of Beginnings.
“Welcome!” he said to them as they nervously approached. “Please, help yourselves to breakfast if you haven’t had any so far.” He had prepared large bowls of fruit, as well as sliced bread and spreads for flavor, and also bowls of dried cereal that would be given milk upon request. Quite a few of the unfamiliar faces eagerly ran toward the food to dine on their breakfast. Once or twice, some of the less civilized digimon seemed to want to pick a fight, but by now, Owen was used to such incidences and intervened quickly. He was glad that he was bigger and more imposing than most other Rookie levels, so far none of the younger students had the notion to challenge him physically. At most, they just spat venomous words at him, which he didn’t mind at all. With over a dozen children in his own family, many at one point or another eager to throw hurtful words at him in their tantrums, Owen was used to that by now, and didn’t let them get to him.
Another hour, when the rest of the class was convened, Owen rang the bells and called “Alrighty! Class convene!”, calling all the young digimon to assemble for today’s lessons.
Also present was Rory the Coronamon, the latest addition to the 7/71st. He had volunteered to learn from Owen’s classes, and Owen thought that’d be a good idea. He’d be glad to give Skye’s son a first-hand experience of teaching young digimon, especially when he had faced him in battle and learned that he was just as talented as his mother.
When enough time had passed, Owen would call the roll, keeping a record of all the young digimon that wanted to attend his classes. While it was not compulsory, he had to have a record of the young digimon that attended his classes. They were free to attend or skip at their leisure, but most of the wise ones attended so they could learn what they could about combat and survival. And since many of them were fresh from the Village of Beginnings, well, clearly many of them had been careless in their combat and survival education previously, so it was normally a fairly high attendance so they could learn not to repeat their mistakes.
Owen was pleased to see his own son Lewis the Gabumon in attendance. Of course, he would do his best to not bring attention to him.
“So, any new arrivals to class today?” Owen called out once he had ticked or crossed each person on the list.

The wind blows, carrying forth some dandelion tufts... they looked fluffy as they floats... but.... but for some reason there's a REALLY BIG one among them? Wait, no, it's not even a big one. It's a walking cloud! With only a snout visible from the crazy fluffball shaped object, it slowly approaches the park where the class is held... Said cloud got a big satchel of various medicines and nursing supplies inside. Not that many would know considering the bag is clasped strongly and the strap is nowhere to be seen (probably buried under the fluff, just like the Digimon's visage.
Upon about few feets away from Owen, the cloud's... ears? perked up... then wiggled a few times. Left, right, left, right, both up and down, twice~ The cloud immediately raised a hand in greeting.
"Hello, Daddo! I'm here to lend some paws!"
Looks like the identity of the cloud like being is Haku, Owen's second eldest child. He slowly tidied himself up with comb. It took him about twenty minutes, but once he's done, it's pretty clear that he's a samoyed themed Gaomon with winter themed headgear and doctor coat. The doctor coat is not part of his "natural looks" though. It's something he wore to signify his role as a doctor.
"I was doing my routine checkups on several of my patients around the city, and before I knew it I ended up being ruffled and pet until my fur all fluffed out like that, heh heh. 'nyway, Grandpa told me to tell that he said hi, and wondered if you have ate yourself, considering how busy this time of the year is. If you haven't I have some freshly made banana pancake in my infinistore."
But enough of that for now. Haku walked over to the medical tent, preparing his stuff in case there's anything emergency needed.

Kohaku could be heard loudly snoring away in his dorm room when the sun rose that morning. Despite wanting to present himself in the best way possible while he was awake, that philosophy goes right out the window when the Falcomon is asleep, considering his blankets and sheets were twisted all around his body in many ways, while the body itself looked like it was making the "death" pose from a certain adult animated show about a guy with a family.
Of course, him being super sleepy in the morning gave his little sister Ruri a perfect opportunity. Standing just outside the door, she'd use her magic to float a trumpet right next to Kohaku himself, before she started using it to play the beginning part of "Reveille," a song that is seemingly used as a wake-up call in the army. Needless to say, THAT got Kohaku's attention.
"AAAAAAAUGH!" Kohaku yelled as he jumped from his bed, the twisted blankets around his legs making him unable to sit up properly before he promptly fell onto the floor. "What the-?! Ruri, what the hell?!"
Back at the door, the Biyomon just couldn't properly contain her laughter. "I'm sorry, Brother, but you were just asking for it! I had to take that chance!"
Kohaku couldn't help but smirk after that, before he began to untangle himself from his sheets. "And other Digimon think you're the more responsible one... you're playing them all for fools, little sis."
"Just because I'm more responsible doesn't mean I can't do harmless pranks. Now come on, we're gonna be late for Mr. Owen's class!"
Meanwhile, a certain blue-eyed Gammamon was at his house in Rosewood, eating breakfast in the dining area with his family. He and his father Shoutmon were of course getting a bit too competitive again, this time in the realm of speed-eating their breakfast. Their spoons went back and forth between their dishes and their mouths so fast that it was difficult to even see at this point.
"You're both gonna get stomachaches if you keep eating like that," Adrian said to the two dragon Digimon as he sweatdropped. "That or one of you is gonna swallow your spoon by accident."
"DONE!" Shoutmon suddenly yelled, holding his arms up in the air with his dish now empty, while Gem still had a few bites left. "Looks like I win again, Gem."
"Aw, you always win, Dad..." Gem said, looking disappointed. But then he perked up when he realized what time it was. "Oh! Mr. Owen's class! I go now!" Gem announced before he got out of his seat and flew out the door.
"Wait, Gem, Skye hasn't finished making your lunch... yet... aaaand he's gone," Adrian said, looking a bit defeated.
"That kid's just like his old man; full of non-stop energy."
"You're my age, at best. You're young compared to most parents."
Kohaku and Ruri would arrive at the school a few minutes after 8am, after the Village of Beginnings children had arrived. Free breakfast was provided for them, an opportunity which Kohaku and Ruri would of course both take. Ruri took a bowl of brown cereal with mini marshmallows, while Kohaku opted to grab a chocolate pebble cereal. However, as soon as he did, he heard a voice start complaining behind him.
"No! You took the last of the chocolate cereal," a Gotsumon said as she ran up to the ninja bird. "That's my favorite kind! What am I gonna do now?!"
"Grab another bowl of cereal, or some fruit...?" Kohaku asked, wondering why this was such a big problem to begin with. "I got here first and I chose this cereal. Finders keepers, after all."
"But I was craving chocolate cereal all morning..." Gotsumon said, looking like she was going to break down into tears. Kohaku was beginning to feel a bit guilty about it... sure, he wasn't technically in the wrong here, and he did want some chocolate cereal himself, but still... finally, he gave one last look at the Gotsumon's eyes before he sighed.
"You know what, I really wasn't in the mood for chocolate cereal anyways," Kohaku said, handing the bowl to the Gotsumon as he looked away. "I can't waste it all by throwing it away, so you might as well have it."
"Really?!" Gotsumon asked, her eyes sparkling up with happiness. "Thank you thank you thank you! I won't forget this!" She would then take the bowl of chocolate cereal from Kohaku and run off to go get some milk for it.
"Well well well, my brother can think of someone else besides himself and me for once," Ruri said with a smirk on her beak as she walked up to him.
The Falcomon immediately blushed and looked away as he grabbed another bowl of cereal, this time corn flakes. "It's not like that, okay? I just... wasn't in the mood for chocolate cereal," Kohaku said as he tried to justify himself. "I don't give a crap about what Gotsumon wants."
"Whatever you say," Ruri responded as the two of them went off somewhere private to go eat their cereal.
About an hour or so later, Owen would call all the students to gather up. Around this time was when Gem finally showed up at the school, being sure to meet up with his best friends Kohaku and Ruri. "Kohaku! Ruri! Here I am!"
"Right at the last minute... what took you so long?"
"I was having an eating contest with my dad at breakfast and lost track of time..." Gem said, scratching the back of his head.
"It's both cute and a bit scary how much you and your famiky are able to eat," Ruri said as the group arrived with the other students, with Owen preparing to take a roll call, with Kohaku opting to lean against a nearby tree and crossing his wings, in an attempt to "look cool." The trio did notice that Gem's older brother Rory and Owen's second oldest son Haku were there as teaching assistants... but for now, they were just watching and paying attention.

Rory was quick to notice the approaching sentient cloud.
“Uhh, Mr. Owen, what’s…” the Coronamon began, but Owen waved his concern down with a chuckle.
“That’s just my son, Rory. Haku. No need to worry.” Owen assured the younger digimon.
“Oh! Haku! Right! He’s really talented in healing, right?” Rory said as he remembered that fact about Owen’s family.
“Yup. That he is.” Owen said, proudly. Even since the DWR days, Owen valued digimon that could heal others extremely well. While every digimon had the ability if they so chose to bring pain into the world, there were few that could remove it. And Haku was particularly talented at such a thing. Owen was sure to offer a hug to Haku quickly, since it would probably take a while to tame his currently wild fur afterward, which at first looked like fairy floss.
Haku forwarded greetings from Sten, and that made Owen even more happy. “Yeah, I have eaten for breakfast, thanks, mate. Although I won’t turn down some of your banana pancakes for lunch, if you’ve got any left over.” he said.
There was a medical tent set up next to Owen’s teaching space, a necessity for classes where he was educating freshly arrived Child level digimon that might not have the best control of their own powers. Originally Owen was going to rely on his own and Rory’s healing abilities to cover the class, but with Haku here, that meant that there was even more oversight and safety provided, which would be perfect for the planned lesson. He supposed he'd best make introductions.
"Haku, this is Rory, Skye's second son. He's also talented at healing, and has proven a reliable assistant and member of the 7/71st." Owen began. "Rory, this is Haku, my second son, also a very talented healer and doctor at Ys."
"Nice to meet you, Haku." Rory said, smiling as he offered a pawshake.
Owen’s own teaching space was simple. It was under the shelter of one of the bigger trees of Rosewood, with a large flat side to the trunk that was perfect for placing a chalkboard, and with large roots on either side designating a suitable teaching space. Obviously it was unsuitable during rain, snow or other inclement weather, but on a sunny summer day like this, it suited just nicely.
The Gaomon kept an eye on the digimon having the provided breakfast, and was glad that a possible altercation was resolved peacefully. ’Hopefully the digimon in charge of the Village of Beginnings are being a bit more proactive in teaching manners these days.’ he thought.
Eventually, after he rang the bell to convene at 9am, the class convened in front of him. Owen instructed them all to sit where they wanted on the grass in front of him. Thankfully the Rosewood parkland was well tended to, and was free of prickly weeds that would otherwise make such a thing uncomfortable.
“Okay, we all set?” Owen asked once everything was settled down. Instead of his usual khaki tunic, he was instead dressed in a more civilian white shirt, with blue tie and khaki vest, as well as his normal red headband. His boxing gloves were for now hooked up on a peg next to the chalkboard, he had no need of them yet.
“Well, welcome everyone, to Combat and Survival class for Beginners.” Owen began cheerfully. “My name is Mr. Owen Gaomon. Helping out with our class today is assistant Mr. Rory Coronamon, and healer Mr. Haku SamoyedGaomon. Please feel free to use our forenames if you like, we don’t mind either way.”
Owen knew it might be a point of contention for some digimon to use forenames or species names, given that it was very much a human custom to use the former. However, he hoped that with either option open it wouldn’t be a problem. After he had taken the roll, he was ready to begin the class.
“Now then. Let’s start from the beginning.” Owen said, turning around, picking up a stick of chalk and began to write in large letters on the board, writing in large underlined letters – ‘COMBAT’. “What do you think is the most important reason to learn Combat? Answers from newcomers only to start with, please.” he added when he saw Lewis’s hand shoot up. Lewis’s hand went back down and the Gabumon thankfully gave a nod of understanding. He was a third-year after all, he didn’t want to steal their thunder.
“Winning fights?” an enthusiastic young Veemon called out.
“Making lesser beings submit to your power and forcing them to carry out your whims?” a Dracmon suggested loudly. The latter made Owen give a nervous chuckle, this one probably needed a bit more correction than the others.
“Well, not quite, any other suggestions?” Owen opened it up to the rest of the class.

Kohaku glanced over at Owen after the breakfast cereal situation was sorted out, meeting eyes with the Gaomon for a bit... the Falcomon knew that his teacher had seen the whole thing. He just hoped that Owen wasn't going to give him a talk about it or anything like that. It's not like he actually did anything wrong, since no one got hurt or upset. But still... Kohaku just wasn't too sure what was gonna happen.
I just hope Mr. Owen doesn't single me out for some stupid reason today...
9AM then rolled around, and the children Digimon were called to sit on the grass in front of Owen. Gem, Kohaku and Ruri, being the main characters that they are, sat in the front of the group, with Kohaku sitting on his knees while Gem and Ruri were sitting with their legs crossed. Both styles of sitting were wildly uncomfortable, but they were Digimon, they could handle it. Owen would go on to introduce his assistants, Rory and Haku, the former of which being one of Gem's older brothers.
"Isn't that your brother, Gem?" Ruri whispered into Gem's ear. "I didn't know that he was a teacher like Mr. Owen."
Of course Gem wasn't listening in the slightest, since he was too busy silently waving at Rory from where he was sitting, hoping that the Coronamon would notice him and wave back. Ruri sweatdropped upon realizing this. "It's rude to ignore your friends, you know, Gem."
Class continued on with Owen asking the class what the most important reason to learn combat was, prompting to give the newcomers a chance to answer, despite a poor Gabumon's attempt to raise his hand. After two less than satisfactory answers -- with the Dracmon's answer causing almost every other kid to scoot away from him -- he opened the question to the rest of the class, to which Kohaku rose his wing almost immediately.
"The purpose of learning combat is not a matter of winning fights or getting others to do what you want," Kohaku explained in a matter-of-fact tone. "Learning proper combat is essential for being able to defend yourself against attackers, or learning how to control your powers as to prevent accidents with others."
"Whoa, you're so smart, Kohaku," Gem cheered on his friend with a smile.
"Not really 'smart,' I'm just callin' it how I see it." Kohaku said with a shrug. It was clear that he was trying to pull off some kind of "aloof" personality here... but was that really who Kohaku was?

"G'day!" Haku greeted the moment Rory spoke the first time. "Don't worry about me! Just a little over floofed cotton candy!" he joked. "Not sure about really talented but I do my best, aye. Don't hesitate to call me anytime you need helping hand! As long as I'm not busy I'll go whenever you ask me to, for the simple price of happiness and fluffing, yes!"
Haku hugged Owen back happily. "Got plenty, daddo. I just thought that you'd like them since it's grandpa's special recipe. Well, I made it this time around as grandpa's pretty busy. But hey, taste guaranteed, because I got Pops' cooking ability after all!"
To the introduction, Haku firmly shook Rory's paw. "Heard great things about you, although apparently you're a huge flirt, hah hah. As long as you're having fun, ey?" he winked. "Anyway, glad to meet you, mate. Let's continue our parents' great relationship, yeah?"
Haku noticed Lewis in the crowd and softly waved at him before merrily heading to his tent. Hmmm, so far so good. He noticed that some Virus Digimons perhaps needing more guidance to balance their viral side. Submit is right, but in society like this, submitting can be done in different way, and in much agreeable ways.
Haku sways a bit on his chair, humming happily as he listened in. Combat eh... to Haku, knowledge of combat is necessary to understand how much force you should exert based on your goal. What's the end goal will affect that. To know yourself before you know your enemy; and after knowing yourself, you must know your enemy as well as knowing yourself; and after knowing your enemy, you must understand the situation you are in. Those who masters the three aspects will master the battlefield. That is at least what Hikaru taught him.
Physical warfare also involves psychological side behind it. Once he thought about that, he chuckled. He sounded more like Hikaru, he noticed. Then again it was his Dorumon father who taught him communication abilities in case things goes south, and how to calm down someone when they gone to deep end. His words must carry weight, especially as emergency worker.

Rory gladly exchanged welcoming gestures with Haku. The big floofy digimon seemed very friendly, and very eager at his job in healing. “Yep, sure, I’ll keep that in mind.” he said as Haku said he shouldn’t hesitate to call for help when needed. He noted that Haku was very cuddly, hugging Owen and all. And it seemed they were both happy with it.
“Yeah, we’ll keep the good lessons alive for the young ones for sure!” the Coronamon replied with enthusiasm, hoping that the period of wars and distrust from the DWR to DATS would be expired forever.
As for Lewis, seated in this class, he knew his place as a senior was to help coach the younger digimon, even if he was almost completely trained in all this, just his last step was to finally evolve to his Adult form. Still though, he waved back at his big brother Haku, and patiently waited for his classmons to make their presence known.
Rory noticed that his little brother Gem was within the class, and gave an awkward expression as he waved back, also giving a signal that he should be paying attention to Owen at this moment.
On the question of what the true meaning of combat was, Kohaku came up with an excellent answer. Owen responded with a point and a grin. “Ace answer there!” he declared, and wrote the words “SELF-DEFENCE” on the chalkboard under the already written “COMBAT”.
Owen would continue his lecture. “And there’s many ways to go about that.” the Gaomon began to put on something of a theatrical performance. “Picture yourselves in such a situation. You’re by yourself on a backroad, and you’re confronted with a single bandit on the same level as yourself that wants to rob you. Of course you don’t just give up right there, what self-respecting digimon would do such a thing? Yet this isn’t something you want to fight to destruction over. Who can tell me the first thing you should do here?”
Owen hoped to hear from another digimon in the class, but would keep Kohaku in mind as a digimon that knew his stuff with this.
“Deck him in the schnoz!” the Veemon from earlier called out excitedly. Owen had to chuckle here, as did a few other digimon in the class.
“Well, that would take him off guard and give you an advantage with the element of surprise, yes.” the Gaomon teacher admitted. “But say if you were up against a prepared ambush where you couldn’t do that, and they had ranged weapons ready, what would you do then?”
“Oh…” the Veemon was stumped by this. And thankfully the Dracmon was too.

"Oh..." Gem was definitely a bit too excited about seeing his older brother teaching with Owen, to the point that he forgot to actually pay attention to the teacher. It disappointed Gem that Rory didn't look as excited about seeing his brother like he did, but he at least understood why he reacted the way he did.
Kohaku felt real proud of himself for the answer he provided, especially when Owen had called it an "ace answer." As if Kohaku needed a head that was bigger than it already was. He closed his eyes and smirked, looking a tiny bit upwards as the other Digimon looked towards him and clapped. "Of course it was an ace answer; it was one that came from me, after all."
"You're looking more like an Atamadekachimon there, Brother," Ruri said, a slight nod at the fact that Kohaku was letting his pride over answering a simple question correctly go right to his head.
After Owen wrote "self-defense" down on the board, he asked the class to picture themselves in a certain situation, involving being confronted by a single bandit, and asked the class what the first thing they'd do from there would be. The Veemon from earlier piped up again, announcing that he'd "deck him in the schnoz." Of course this caused the class to chuckle a bit, with Kohaku, Ruri and Gem included. Owen admitted that that would give him an advantage, he added a new condition: it was a prepared ambush where that wasn't possible, and the bandit had a ranged weapon ready to go.
Oh wow, this is actually pretty tough...
After thinking about it for a while though, Kohaku shot his wing up into the air again. "I've been taking jujitsu lessons out of town, so I think I'd have the perfect solution. I'd drop a smoke bomb at my feet so that the bandit would become blinded. Then I'd use that as my chance to sneak around behind my opponent and disarm them, if that's possible."
"But I don't have smoke bombs," Gem pointed out. "All I can do is destroy things with my photon blasts. I'd be so powerless against a bandit like that!"

Now that's a good question, Haku mused. Not everyone in dark alley will mug you of course, but at the same time, you'd fear for your safety because it's perfect place for crime. The Falcomon have the right idea, but that is assuming that the perpetrator won't shoot immediately. Even if you use smoke bomb, you have to calculate how wide is the alley. If it's too small to go around, a smoke bomb wouldn't work, and you'd have better chance throwing kunai at someone's eye instead, which would make them flinch and hopefully miss their aim. A smoke bomb would instead cause someone to shoot at you anyway. They won't have this knee jerk reaction where they would miss their aim.
...But that would be for someone who came prepared in this sort of situation. What about those who doesn't?
So there are several ways to go about this, he thinks. First is deescalation. Just don't immediately escalate to battle, and instead play the fool to get you out of there, which can lead to second option... just run. Of course you need to know if there is any second ambush waiting for you though.
If a combat is absolutely necessary, then you need to know what exactly they want. If they want your money, Haku think that they should play it a bit, show your wallet, make sure their eyes are on your wallet, toss it. Next is to either attack with a gap shortener or fire a long range attack yourself. If they want to kill you to absorb your data... welp, you're probably out of luck, but sometimes lying by saying that authorities are coming. also helps.... He's not sure if these kids can pull the lying card off though. Either way: to know your opponent, and to know your surrounding. Some items lying there can help. Glass bottle, trash can, any projectiles would help.
....He's kinda curious how the other would answer this... and what is Lewis thinking if he were to answer this one. Thinking in and out of the box is needed for this question.

Rory wished he could have shown better enthusiasm to his brother there. And in fact he could have, but he knew that he had to take his position as class assistant seriously here. Much of these digimon were un-tested and unaware of what they were truly capable of, and he wanted to be taken seriously just in case it got out of hand at any point.
Owen meanwhile was pleased at the positive reaction of the class to Kohaku making a good answer. By now he had taught enough classes to know when there’d be problem pupils. Of course, not everyone applauded, but there was at least enough of them enthusiastic about the cause in this case for him to feel confident that this would be a good batch.
He listened to the responses to his scenario question. Kohaku answered that he would first throw up a smoke bomb and sneak around to disarm them. Gem then added that he didn’t have smoke bombs.
Owen decided to let Kohaku down gently. “Well, that’s certainly a good tactic if things go your way. However, you’ve skipped one or two steps there. So let’s rewind a bit. You’re confronted by aggressors, what do you do first?”
Lewis noticed his big brother Haku watching him. The Gabumon took this as encouragement to raise his hand, even though he was an elder student in this class.
“Yes, Lewis?” Owen asked his son, patiently.
“Survey the surroundings first?” the Gabumon asked.
“Yes, that’s right!” Owen said, turning to write ‘SURVEY’ on the board behind him. “The moment you’re confronted, you want to immediately know the terrain you stand on. What advantages and disadvantages you have. To take the example from Mr. Falcomon here, smoke bombs might be ideal in some situations, but what if there was a high wind that would blow the smoke away? The very first thing you need to do is know your ground.”
Rory sure knew that lesson. When he first took these combat classes, he thought he was all cocksure and could handle anything. But then Owen started teaching him about obstacles. The first wake-up call was swimming across a deep stream, Rory couldn’t do that. The second was fighting in the rain. Following that, Rory’s cockiness turned to humbleness as he was forced to acknowledge his own weaknesses and work around them. Thankfully Owen had been kind to him in correcting his mentality.
“So then, that’s step one of the combat situation.” Owen declared to the class. “Who can tell me what step two is?”
“If things are in your favour, attack?” asked an Agumon.
“Nice try, but I'm afraid you skipped a step there.” Owen said, deciding to ask less vocal members of the class for their input. He turned to Ruri. “Miss Biyomon? Sorry, I haven’t got your name yet. Do you have an idea?” he asked gently.

Kohaku couldn't help but blush when Owen had responded to his answer like that, along with Lewis answering the follow-up question. If he was honest, he never even considered the location in the slightest. In his mind, it was just a woodsy area like where he trained with Kaito. It was still something he needed to learn, but he still felt like he should've considered that. Kohaku would be more quiet for a bit after this, the last thing he needed was more embarrassment.
The Gabumon named Lewis would answer correctly this time, stating that surveying the surroundings was important. Owen tried using Kohaku's response as an example of how it could go wrong otherwise, but the Falcomon was filled with so much pride that he couldn't even look at Owen in the eye for the moment. It wasn't anything serious, of course, and Owen would know this very well. He was still paying attention to class at least, that much was evident.
"Kohaku? Are you okay?" Gem quietly asked, noticing how Kohaku wasn't looking at the teacher anymore.
"Yeah, I'm fine, don't you worry about it," Kohaku whispered back, trying to put on his usual "confident" expression, despite how he was feeling anything but confident at the moment. It was enough to ease Gem's concern for the moment though.
Once Owen was finished explaining step one of a combat situation, he proceeded to ask if anyone knew what step two was. Of course an Agumon responded with what any kid Digimon would respond with, which was to simply attack the opponent. But he too seemed to skip a crucial step, according to Owen. Owen turned his eyes right towards Ruri, asking her if she had an idea of what that step would be. Keep in mind that Ruri wasn't raising her wing in the slightest.
BLOOD PRESSURE: 1,000,000%.
Ruri practically went white, as she wasn't expecting to be called on in the slightest. On top of that, she didn't even know the answer- why did Owen call on her to begin with?! "U-Ummm... I don't... really know..." Ruri stated as she looked away, tapping her two index claws together in the process. "A-And my name is Ruri..."

Oh! Nice job! Haku gave a thumb up at Lewis after he answered, tail wagging happily. Yes that was to be expected. Haku looked at the board and hums happily. Survey was the right answer, and after survey comes the question of what's next. He guess it's more like knowing your options and further knowing what does your enemy desire from you. Well, that was pretty much it though. Once you know what your options are, you can pretty much execute what to do. Oh, that poor Piyomon though...
Hmmm, should he interjected a bit and give her a candy perhaps? Hmmm, no, actually that would be undermining Owen's authority as the class teacher and paints him as a bad teacher... no, he should not. However, perhaps he could pass her some chocolate, just to calm her down and to not make her think of today as a very bad day of being unable to answer the question in her first day of class.
Still, this is quite the eye opening day for sure. He's very sure that these kids are in very great paws. But considering that the questions would soon be replaced with actual demonstrations, Perhaps he should get ready? Haku stood up from his chair and did some casual check up on the medical tent's inventory just in case. His movement pretty relaxed and pretty much looked "don't mind me here". Oh, come to think of it, he should probably stock some sweets just in case....

Owen felt a little bad about calling on the Biyomon first. He had only meant to ask if any of the more quiet pupils had anything to add to the discussion. He hadn’t meant to petrify her like this.
Thankfully Haku was there, seemingly divided about giving her candy or not. Owen thought that this might be something of a good idea. So he smiled at the Biyomon for answering. “That’s okay. You’re here to learn after all, Ruri. And it’s perfectly okay to answer that you don’t know something if you truly don’t know. Haku, could you please pass her some candy?”
Owen hoped that this generous offering would encourage others in the class to answer. A few others did, including the Dracmon from earlier asking if there’d be time to deftly create a voodoo doll to incapacitate them. By now Owen figured out he was just probably joking now and didn’t pay too much mind to his outlandish answers. But every answer he got, he asked Haku to pass them some candy for participating in the class discussion.
When there was enough replies given, Owen decided to give them the answer.
“The next step is, to establish whether or not you need to fight at all.” Owen explained. “I know that it can be a hard thing to accept. You might be challenged by a digimon a level higher than yourself, where fighting is not a good option. You might have been challenged by another digimon by a way of misunderstanding. You might even be able to negotiate your way out of a fight altogether. But, it’s the second important step of combat, to understand your opponent’s intentions.”
He turned to write the word “UNDERSTAND” on the chalkboard and underline it.
Rory understood at once, that was an important lesson Owen had taught to him as well. Every dispute didn’t have to lead to brutish fighting. This was all news to Lewis as well, who rather sided with the Agumon to fight as soon as he gained the upper hand. But there was a lingering doubt in the Gabumon’s mind that he felt he need to raise his hand.
“But d- I mean, Mr. Owen, what do we do if they attack us first?” he asked.
“Then in that case, if they state that they intend to attack you no matter what, it’s clear, you understand that they intend to fight you, so you need to either flee or fight back.” Owen replied, then turned to write one more word on the chalkboard and underlined it – “FIGHT”.
“Now then. Let’s proceed to the practical stage of today’s lesson.” the Gaomon said. He reached into a box beside the chalkboard and pulled out two wooden dummies, with arms and legs attached by ropes. He flipped switches on both of their heads, and before the class, both dummies seemed to animate into life, standing upright, their wooden limbs held up in a fighting position.
“Next up, we’re going to see what your attacking abilities are like.” Owen declared. “Please file into two lines, one for each battle dummy, then when it’s your turn, attack the dummy with whatever ability you have. Melee or Ranged. You’re all Rookie level digimon, you should have one. And if you don’t, then this is your chance to learn it. Don’t worry, the dummies won’t attack you back, in this lesson anyway. This is your introduction to combat.”
Lewis felt a little excited to see what the others were made of here. And for an extra touch, Owen activated a record player, to play appropriate battle music to get everyone into the swing of things.
“Okay, begin!” he said, inviting the digimon to attack the battle dummies. "And don't worry about breaking them. I tested them myself, they're not likely to break against anything less than a Perfect level attack."

Whether Owen had meant it or not, the result was the same nonetheless. Ruri was still trying to cope with the shame of not knowing the right answer when her brother had provided two decent answers already, but then Owen managed to save it. He smiled at Ruri and told her it was okay if she didn't know the answer, since learning was why she was here to begin with. "I just... didn't know you would call on me," Ruri tried to explain. On the bright side, the prospect of receiving candy cheered her up at least somewhat. Ruri felt much better after she started munching on the candy she got from Haku, which encouraged the other kids to try and answer the question as well so that they could get some candy of their own. The Dracmon once again gave another really weird answer, which made Kohaku, Ruri and Gem all feel even more uncomfortable around him. Once enough students gave answers, Owen would provide the real next step: to determine whether or not that a fight is needed to begin with, to understand the opponent's intentions.
Owen's explanation made Kohaku think back to just moments ago with the Gotsumon. They had a dispute over the chocolate cereal, and he understood that the Gotsumon had been wanting a cereal like that all morning. So Kohaku had decided that fighting over a bowl of cereal just wasn't worth it, and simply gave it to her. The Falcomon had to admit... he felt damn proud of himself for living up to that step before the lesson had even started. Ruri had also called back to this event while Owen was explaining the step, and she looked over at her older brother. Good on you, Brother, she thought to herself with a smile. Both Ruri and Kohaku had confidence that they would be able to properly understand when a good time to fight would be in the future.
Now it was time to move on to more practical lessons, which some of the kids seemed pretty amped about. Owen pulled out two wooden dummies connected by ropes, turning them on so that they'd animate to life before requesting the students to form two lines and take turns attacking the dummies. Seemed simple enough. Because they were at the front of the line, the first three in one of the lines would be Kohaku, Ruri, and Gem in that order.
Kohaku was up first. He decided to show off a move he had learned from training with Kaito. He made precise movements with his wings before one of those wings began to glow white. "Windlash no Jutsu!" He then shot the wing outward towards the dummy, causing a slashing wind motion to fly right towards the dummy and strike it, which had even caused the dummy to be knocked over before it got back up all by itself. As he walked back, Kohaku leaned over to Gem and whispered, "Now's your chance to shine, Gem. Good luck."
"Thank you," Gem whispered to his Falcomon friend.
Ruri would be up next after her brother. She decided to go with her most basic attack for the moment, not wanting to stand out that much. "Spiral Twister!" Ruri opened her beak, which allowed a spiral-like blast of green flames to fly right towards the striking dummy. It scorched it a bit, but didn't knock the dummy over like Kohaku's attack. Once that was done, she too would whisper to Gem, "You gonna be okay, Gem?" "Yeah, I will," Gem would whisper back, smiling and nodding at his Biyomon friend. There was a reason that the birbs were doing this: they were concerned for their friend. WHY were they concerned? Well, Owen would know the reason as Gem stepped up to the plate, as he would most likely remember what Shoutmon had told him about Gem not too long ago before he joined school.
"Gem's powers aren't like anything I've seen before. Be careful if you're gonna have him test them out during your classes."
"Can everyone stand back a bit please?" Ruri requested of the other students as Gem was concentrating, his eyes shut.
I can do this without messing up... I know I can... Gem took a deep breath before opening up his eyes, which were now glowing with photon energy along with his claws. He extended them both out towards the striking dummy. "PHOTON SHOT!"
A powerful beam of photon energy shot out from Gem's claws, making its way straight for the striking dummy. Once the beam hit, there was a flash of light that made it hard to make out what happened. Once the light faded, the pieces of the training dummy could be seen falling to the ground around the smoldering spot where it once stood... before it re-assembled itself, of course. He looked around at his teachers and peers to see what they made of the attack that was arguably a bit too much for a simple training exercise.

Oh, now that he's given permission, he would do that. Haku's tail wags happily as he gave the candy to the younger Digimon. Of course he gave more candy to those who are brave to answer too, even his brother Lewis, who he winked at for his bravery. But it doesn't mean that he will give him more candy or a more delicious one. But he knew his brother so of course he gave him his favorite kind among the bunch that he have.
On the practice session after Gem's attack however, Haku tapped his father's shoulder, whispering to ask if he could have a little tutoring time. Gem needed to learn more control and frankly... the silence is... after all, not really a good thing. In turn, he's hoping to like, give Owen a time to assess the situation and focus on Gem himself. If Owen gave his permission, he would approach one of the dummy before clapping his paws. "Excuse me for a bit, everyone! I'd like to give a little bit of supplementary lesson you see... As you might know, I'm a Samo Gaomon. I think everyone knows that Gaomon are not known for having long ranged attack, unless you're much more advanced in your battle study... And I think this extends to many melee type Digimons! So I'd like you to consider this."
He pulled out his gun out of his holster. "Weapons!"
"But Doctor! Aren't you supposed to heal?" an Armadimon asked.
"That is indeed my duty, young one! That's a good question over here, have a candy! ...Ahem! The job of a healer is quite perilous you see. You have to concentrate to heal, and sometimes, in the battlefield, the strategy if you disregard moral is to attack the healer. Ideally, a healer wouldn't have to worry and just heal, but unfortunately, not everyone will play nice. So healers... will have to have a protection on their person."
"But isn't it ironic to have a gun when you're supposed to heal?" a Gazimon commented, slightly sarcastically, but in good humor.
"Heh, I guess it is ironic, but hey, you got it right, here have a candy! Here's the thing though... this gun, it's nonlethal. Basically, it's designed to impossible to harm someone too much with this gun. Its main design is to shock, and to stop someone from trying to attack you long enough that your allies could pull the attacker back so you can focus on healing. I recommended it for you who don't really want to harm someone but in need of protection, or if you think that your attack is too strong. Even baton or catapult works. But generally? Long range weapon is the best if you don't have long range attack. Distance is important when you're trying to escape after all! Because distance equals time. Time equals more chance!"
To give an example, Haku puts his gun back on the holster, then pulled it quickly, almost like a quickdraw and shot the dummy on its shoulder.
"To disarm, you can hit here," he pointed at the wrist. "here..." he pointed at the joint between torso and shoulder, around where the arm can be rotated "here" he pointed at the kneecaps "or here" he pointed at the feet. "Remember to use force accordingly. We don't want to harm someone too unnecessarily after all! I hope that helped, everyone! It's good to have more options after all!"
