Maia seemed really nervous for some reason. Marshal couldn't figure out why. "Well, let's go check out the place," he said. He got up to leave, but realized he had to pay the check. Unfortunately, he concluded that the resturaunt wouldn't take real world money, so he looked to Maia for help.
"So, I don't have any money yet," he muttered, somewhat embarassed. "Would you be willing to pick this up this time? I'll pay you back as soon as I can."

Hearing the comment on money, Maia began to smirk. She had actually been waiting for this to happen. "Isn't it rude to make me pay?" the tamer teased, before pulling out her Digivice and hitting a few buttons. "I'm joking," she clarified, waiting for the Kiwimon to return to the table. "Actually, you do have money," the blonde added, as the bird Digimon came over and looked at the Digivice.
There was a sigh, as the armless monster looked at the device. Sure, it was expected, but putting it's mouth on someone else's toy didn't really sound appealing to the champion. Seeing the Digimon lift up a leg, intent on using its toes as fingers, Maia helped by lowering the device further. A few clicks, and the Kiwimon mumbled a, "payment accepted. Come again," before walking off to one of it's other tables.
"Think of a Digivice as a credit line," the girl advised, putting the purple-gripped item back into her pocket. "Except, I haven't found a real limit on it yet, and there's nobody to really pay back? It pays for Kuu's meals a lot." After all, that had been what her neighbor said he used it for. It turned out to be a good idea. "You don't owe me anything. Unless you want to," she added the final bit with a smile, fixing her bag onto her shoulder as the her Digimon hopped up to her shoulder, licking the corners of his mouth to try to get all the food off.
"I'm ready to go when you are."

"Woah, these things are really cool," Marshal said, marveling at his Digivice. "Let's go, Sunmon!"
"I'm ready!" Sunmon said, looking as though he would be saluting if he had arms. With that, Marshal, Sunmon, Kuu, and Maia took off for the center of town where Kiwimon said the training dojo would be. After quite the walk, they arrived at what seemed to be the place.
Marshal stared at the front for a while before taking a deep breath and opening the door.

"Grizz? I've been looking over the Bear Claw Pack handbook, and I'm pretty sure this won't actually give a merit badge," a nervous voice stammered from within the training dojo.
"Aw, hush, Gao! 'Fraid of a little roughhousing?" a far more relaxed voice said. Upon entering the training center, Maia and Marshal would see quite the odd pair. A Gaogamon was sitting, nose in a book, while his Bearmon friend merrily whacked at an oversized punching bag. "This is gonna be great! You get to do community service, I get to see you get your butt whooped. Aren't we all getting what we want here?" The Gaomon didn't have much time to respond, of course. Before he knew it, Grizz was off wailing on her punching bag again. It was really hard to argue with your best friend when she couldn't hear you over the sound of her own punches!
Sighing, Gao set the handbook down and turned to the new arrivals. They didn't look like tough guys at all. One of them was practically an infant, in digital terms! These couldn't be the first people to show up to a fight, could they? "Ah, welcome," the Gaomon said. "Is this your first time here at the dojo? I can help show you around, if you'd like-"
"They're here for a fight, ya big nerd!" Grizz bellowed. "Sorry 'bout my bud. He's a bit of a square sometimes. Most earnest guy in the Grizzly Claw, though. He's got first shift of training duty, so you don't gotta be scared of going up against these guns." The Bearmon flexed for emphasis. Years of slacking during pack meetings meant she wasn't all that strong, but she'd be damned if she wasn't proud nonetheless.
"R-right," Gao continued. "So, which of you two would like to be fighting today? The Kudamon, I presume?" Gaomon really did not want to fight a baby. And to that, this narrator says too bad!

At least the new guy seemed pretty content with how his life was turning out. Maia kind of wished she could seem so optimistic. Really, the best benefit to all of this was essentially free food. That was at the cost of many eaten socks and accessories, though. It probably didn't balance out in the end.
Kuu was clearly excited the entire walk to the dojo, asking an, "are we there yet?" every few steps. He really was just like a little kid in most aspects.
Walking into the building with Marshal, the girl found herself staring at a dog and bear Digimon. At least they looked friendly? Also, what in the world was Grizzly Claw? Maia decided it was better not to question it. After all, they didn't really want an explanation of something like that, did they? "That's reassuring?" Clearly, the tamer wasn't actually sure if it was, but she wouldn't argue it.
Hearing the Gaomon ask who they were fighting, Kuu was about to pipe in, but was quickly interrupted by his tamer, "ah, no, he... he's good. We have a friend here that needs to learn how to keep himself safe." With that, Maia motioned to the Sunmon. Man, it was probably embarrassing to have to fight an in-training, when she thought about it.
A little frustrated that he wasn't allowed to play, the Kudamon huffed. "That's okay! I don't need to train, anyway. I took on an Arachnemon before! Without Digivolving!" While this was true, Kuu didn't actually stand a chance fighting an ultimate level on his own. In fact, his tamer even noticed that he didn't specify that he had won or not.
"Yeah, but we'd probably be dead if WarGreymon wasn't there," she pointed out, in some attempt to pop the monster's bubble.
Nope. Wasn't going to work. "I had it under control, Maia. No spiders allowed. War was just there to look fancy." Well, then. Whatever world the fox was in certainly seemed fun! If only Maia could even see a glimpse of that world!

"Alright, then," Marshal said, bowing politely to the Gaomon and Bearmon who ran the dojo. Maybe he was getting the whole "Japanese culture" thing down, after all! "My partner Sunmon and I would really appreciate some training so we're able to take care of ourselves out here. What do you say?"
"We hope you can oblige us," Sunmon said rather eloquently. Marshal was sort of impressed. The little guy had a way with words when he wanted to. He thought that since Sunmon was literally only a couple hours old that he would act like a baby or at least a small child, but the creature seemed to have completely matured ever since it digivolved from that smoke form. It seemed very strange, and it made Marshal wonder what Sunmon would be like when he digivolved even further.
Realizing that he was about to fight for the first time, Marshal turned over to Maia. "So, uh, how do these fights work, exactly? Do I have to do anything?"

Grizz couldn't help but burst out laughing at her bud's predicament. "Look out, people!" she shouted, mockingly warning the mostly-empty dojo to step back. A single Lalamon, meticulously lifting weights bigger than its entire body, looked over its shoulder briefly to check out the spectacle. "We got ourselves a baby fight today!" The Bearmon shuffled around in her backpack before pulling out a giant tub of popcorn, which she offered merrily to Maia, Kuu, and Marshal.
"This is just a simple training match, so you don't need to do anything but encourage your partner," Gao explained. "But in the future, bad Digimon might try to directly hurt you. Always pay attention to your surroundings, okay? As the Bear Claw Pack handbook says, 'To be prepared is to be a survivalist.' " The Gaomon's nervous voice took on a much more dignified tone as he regaled that advice. It almost hid the fact that he was now going to be a punching bag for a small child.
He walked over to the small, eloquent Digimon, taking a large training pad off of the wall and holding it out. "Alright, let's begin! Let's see how hard you can hit this."
Grizz was already bored with how slow this was. She turned to Kuu, giving him a suspicious eye between mouthfuls of popcorn. "So you're saying you got tangled up with an Ultimate? No freaking way," she said, clearly doubting. "Packmaster Leomon said if we ticked one of those off, and he wasn't around to bail our butts out, we'd be good as dead. In retrospect, may not've been a good idea to test out the new slingshot so blindly. Eh. Live and learn."

"Okay," Sunmon said, rather timidly. "Here I come! Starlight Shiner!" Sunmon opened his mouth and began to shoot out tiny, star-shaped projectiles at the mat that Gao was holding up. They seemed to just kinda splat against the mat without doing too much, but there were audible thuds, so some light damage may have been done if an enemy were in the way.
"Good job, buddy!" Marshal encouraged, thankful that he didn't have to participate too much. He accepted the popcorn from Grizz and chomped down on a handful as he watched his partner train. He wasn't really paying attention to Grizz and Kuu's conversation.

Well, Bearmon certainly seemed to be prepared for anything! Before Kuu could just dip his face into the food, Maia reached out to take a handful and put it near the fox's face. This was way more sanitary than whatever alternative the rookie would have. The little Digimon happily munched on a few pieces of popcorn, before nodding to the bear. "It was trying to attack some guy! Had to be a hero, you know?" This sounded almost cocky, but the excitement of the entire situation was overlapping too much to probably be worrying. "She almost got Maia, but I hit her on the head!"
"And, then WarGreymon cut her in half," Maia added, again trying to pop the Digimon's bubble.
This time, it seemed to work, as Kuu's ears flattened a little, looking at his tamer through half lidded eyes. "Be grateful, human." Human? "I held off an Ultimate level Digimon in your world, chased it to this one, and protected you until someone else came along! I'm a hero." With a sigh, his tamer used her free hand to scratch the monster on the nose.
"Uh, right. You did a great job, I guess?" Though, the entire ordeal could have been avoided if the Kudamon hadn't forced her to go help a stranger.
And, that was the same point where the slingshot comment had sunk into the pipefox's mind. "Wait! You have a slingshot? We need a slingshot! I could be a flying fox!" Oh no. Was that how this was going to work out? Hopefully, the rookie didn't know how to obtain or use a slingshot!
Trying to avoid the conversation, Maia looked to Marshal, "so, what are your thoughts on the whole 'Digimon' thing so far? Think you'll be able to handle it?"

"So far, it seems really fun! I'm meeting new people, at least," Marshal said, not taking his gaze off of Sunmon as he was training. "These Digimon are pretty fascinating little guys, too. I think I wouldn't mind sticking around here for a while. I'm kinda worried, though. What do I with Sunmon when I have to go home? I don't want to just abandon him, but I also don't know if I want to deal with hiding a little fire monster from my parents." He turned over to Maia. "Say, what's your opinion on these guys?"

Gao smiled gently at the small scorch marks in the target mat. They were little and weak, but they were called In-Trainings for a reason. "Very good! When I was that small, I couldn't even dent this," he said reassuringly. "Okay, now we're gonna try dodging. I'm gonna attack you now, so get ready! Hadogken!" The battle wolf cupped his hands and fired a tiny ball of energy at the Solarmon. It moved at a snail's pace, and his punch was so lightly that it wouldn't hurt even if direct impact was made, but hopefully it looked suitably dangerous to serve as good dodging practice!
Grizz smirked at the slingshot comment. "Oh, you wanna see the good stuff, huh? You came to just the right scout," she laughed. With a flourish she pulled out a needlessly complicated slingshot; that is to say, a Y-shaped stick with a rubber band and way too many unnecessary gizmos stapled onto it. "50% bigger than the average. Three types of scope lens. Compass for finding directions. Pressure thingy, I guess so you can line up your shot better. And look at that snazzy paint job!" Upon closer examination, the slingshot also had hotrod flames painted on it. "Best dang thing to every come out of the Bear Claw Pack. Unless your Gao. Big nerd says the handbook's the best thing. Pssh, like you could prank anyone with a handbook."

Marshal looked over to see Gao launching an attack at Sunmon. "Look out, buddy!" he cried to his Digimon.
Sunmon didn't even have time to accept Gao's praise. He gasped as his "opponent" launched the fireball at him. Luckily, it was plenty slow, so Sunmon easily floated away from the attack. "How's that?" he asked. "I'm I doing alright so far?"

What was Maia's opinion on them? Eyes turned to Kuu, who was energetically having a conversation with the Bearmon. "My opinion on Digimon as a whole? Or just the ones that are like pets?" she paused, thinking. It did depend, really. The partners didn't seem too terrible, aside from their potential to be obnoxious. She'd yet to meet one that she could consider bad from a moral standpoint. "If you mean as a pet, they're alright. Kuu gets into everything and anything, but he means well. I think. More loyal than a cat and can actually talk." Maybe talking wasn't always a good thing, though. "I guess my dad likes him, too."
Oh, yeah. She still hadn't talked to her dad about that, yet. The blonde still needed to interrogate him about how long he'd known about the strange fox in her bedroom.
"Yours looks like he may be a bit harder to hide, since he might catch everything on fire," she pointed out, motioning at the flame on the creature. "But, you can't really leave him here, either. Without you, he will die." Okay, maybe that sounded a little morbid, but Maia bet it would strike the right amount of sense into the boy. "Partners rely on us to be able to digivolve. Without you, he's a sitting duck. And, I bet other Digimon will take advantage of that."
While Kuu heard his name, he was far too busy to interrupt the conversation. Instead, he was nodding rapidly at the idea of seeing the slingshot. Once it was being displayed, the Digimon "ooh!"-ed and "ahh!"-ed at every little detail mentioned. "This is totally the best!" Not like the Kudamon didn't think that about just about anything, though.
Despite trying to pretend to ignore the conversation, his tamer heard the comment on handbooks. "Depends on the kind of prank," she mumbled under her breath. The comment was clearly meant to be to herself, but it became clear that she had thought aloud when she realized that Kuu was staring at her with huge eyes. "N-Not that I would know," she quickly added, before turning back to look at Marshal.

"I see." Marshal wasn't really sure what kind of answer he was looking for from Maia, but he still couldn't shake the feeling that something was making her uncomfortable. He wasn't sure what, and he wasn't going to press her on the subject. Perhaps he would learn in time. It didn't really concern him, so he decided not to bother with it. What was most important to him right now was to help his new partner get stronger. He watched as Sunmon easily dodged Gao's small attack. He was glad that little Sunmon really wanted to put in the effort to get stronger, but was Maia right? Was he maybe pushing himself too hard too fast? After all, Sunmon had just hatched that morning. And he was already getting close to being on the same level as Kuu, who it seemed had been with Maia for a while at this point. Marshal figured he would talk to Sunmon later and hopefully learn more about him. Right now, Marshal decided it was best to give Sunmon what he wanted and see how far he could take it.
"Don't be afraid to step it up a bit, Gaomon!" Marshal goaded. "I think Sunmon can take it!"
Sunmon looked back at Marshal a little nervously, but ultimately decided that Gao probably wouldn't do any serious damage to him even if he started to actually fight. He seemed like too nice of a Digimon to do that. "I'll be okay, Master Gao!" he insisted, giving the blue dog Digimon a quick nod. "I'll do whatever it takes to get stronger for Marshal!"

"Excellent dodge! Gao said, but judging by the Sunmon's next statement he had the feeling that the In-Training knew he was pulling his punches. He opened his mouth to hear his explanation, only to hear the Sunmon call him master. He nervously tugged at his headband, stammering "O-oh, I'm no master. I'm just watching the place."
Grizz simply laughed uproariously at her bud's flustering. Man, if that little Digimon knew how badly Gao wanted to be a packmaster, he'd probably find that reaction hilarious as well. "Aw, c'mon, don't be so humble!" she cheered. "I think you're some kind of master." Gao started to smile appreciatively, but was cut off with a taunt of "Master of the nerds!"
Gao could always count on her to yank a compliment from right beneath his feet. "Well, if you insist, let's begin. Hadogken!" This time the energy blast was twice the size of the last one, and moved far faster. It would take actual effort for the Sunmon to dodge it this time, potentially!
Not that Grizz was paying much attention. She was far more interested in the otherwise straight-laced girl revealing a more wild side. "Secret prankster! Secret prankster! Don't just hold out on me, spill the beans!" Grizz's standard material had been growing stale for a while now. She was in need of something fun and innovative, and maybe Maia would've had the tricks of the trade she was hungering for.
