"Look out, Sunmon!" Marshal cried.
Sunmon gasped and tried to get out of the way, but it looked like it would be too late. Suddenly, just like earlier, Sunmon began to glow with a brilliant light, while Marshal's Digivice began to do the same.
"Sunmon Digivolve to...Coronamon!"
"Corona Flame!" Suddenly, the newly Digivolved Rookie shot a stream of fire at Gao's Hadogken, and the two attacks cancelled each other out. Everyone looked shocked.
"Sunmon Digivolved again?" Marshal questioned in disbelief.

Ack! Why did she have to say anything? Couldn't Maia learn how to bite her tongue? "N-No, really! I don't know a single prank," she emphasized. No, she didn't know a single one. She knew several! But, she wasn't going to say that part! Sunmon digivolving again made for the perfect distraction! "Oh, look at that!" The tamer had switched the subject as suddenly as possible. "He already hit Rookie! I'd say that's pretty good for his first day!"
To this, Kuu puffed up his cheeks, grumpily looking at his tamer. "You said it was bad to Digivolve too soon," he pointed out, only to be ignored on the comment. She was not getting back into that one again! He was a rookie now! Wasn't that good enough?
This probably meant the two of them were going to have to discuss that topic again on their way back home, later. Great.

Holy crap, I'm so sorry! I never got the notification on this post. "Wow, already? I'm impressed! Of course, now there's no reason for me to hold back. Puppercut!" The canid Digimon looked very relieved to no longer be fighting a literal baby. He slid towards Coronamon, hands raised in a protective boxing stance. First he juked left, then he juked right, and finally he lunged forward in a rising uppercut with his dominant hand. Would the feints successfully throw the lion off in this battle of dogs vs cats? Of course, it was also hard to ignore that there was a new focus in Gao's eyes. Whereas before he was far too flustered to properly do his job, now he was fully in his element. It seemed when he wasn't the constant subject of teasing and jokes, he was actually a pretty measured and talented fighter.
Of course, compared to Grizz, his determination was severely lacking. "You're a terrible liar, kid. And that's coming from someone who knows Gao, worst liar in the pack. Come on, you gotta tell me!" The normally lazy bear was practically unshakeable when she saw something she liked. In this case, that something was seeing a straight-laced, proper looking person turn out to be a complete secret prankster. That said, her attention was briefly shifted to focus on the Digivolving Coronamon, which earned a clap, a cheer, and a shouted declaration of awesomeness. However, as soon as her focus changed it quickly returned, expectant eyes falling right on Maia.

Coronamon watched closely as Gao ducked and weaved around. He was unable to fully track the speedy Digimon, but he quickly caught on to what he was trying to do. "Corona Cloak!" the new Rookie shouted, using a new move. Coronamon was enveloped in fire, which didn't stop Gao's attack, but it softened the blow and probably caused at least a little damage to the Digimon.
Marshal was totally ignoring the conversation that Grizz was having with Maia and Kuu at this point, totally invested in the fight now. He watched silently on as Coronamon went toe to toe with Gao.

"I'm not lying" the tamer protested. No, in fact, she knew several pranks! Not just a single one! But, Maia definitely wasn't going to tell the bear anything of the sorts! "Why not show off your slingshot more? It's way more fun than I am."
To this, Kuu nodded rapidly. "Maia's boring. Slingshots are awesome! Do you think one could make me fly?" Oh, gosh. Maybe discussing pranks had been a better plan than making the Kudamon become a projectile!
Still, Maia tried to pretend that she wasn't paying any attention to the other digimon in the room, aside from those taking part in the fight. "So, Marshal. What do you think about the fight? Can you handle doing this all the time?" Weak subject, but the blonde had to look busy!

"Well, Maia," Marshal said, mimicking her tone. "It looks really exciting! Any other time, I would probably say it's too much work, but there's something about this whole thing that's just getting me excited!" Suddenly, Marshal felt invigorated and renewed, almost a completely different person from what he was just that morning. Finally, there was something new and exciting for him to do! He watched on with laser focus as Coronamon and Gao duked it out.

Gao grinned a little as his attack landed solidly, only to feel that burn from Coronamon's shield. It was a good guard, and the Gaomon had to shake his hand a little to get out some of the pain. That kind of singe was going to force him to be more careful with his punches in the future. "Quick thinking! That's going to pay off for you later on," Gao said, hunching back into his defensive stance and trying to plan his next move. It was important to keep the rookie on his toes, or else he'd grow complacent. If he passed that on, he wouldn't be a very good teacher, right? "Alright, this one's gonna be big, so look out! Dogpile!" The Gaomon hopped back, sticking to one of the dojo's walls briefly before springing off. As he careened down he aimed a powerful elbow drop right at Coronamon, planning to crash into him with all of his might.
"Yeah, yeah, whatever. Keep being a buzzkill," Grizz said, rolling her eyes in response. "And a slingshot that can make you fly? Please, you say that like I haven't been cooking up one of those for a while now. It's too big to drag over here, but I've been working my butt off on planning it. Although, I bet if you ducked down in that cartridge of yours you could fit into one of the smaller slingshots. That thing's really aerodynamic." It seemed like Grizz was way more knowledgeable on matters of pranking science than she was on anything and everything else. Sometimes, Gao felt that if she applied a single bit of that drive to any other aspect of life, she could really be a huge success. Instead, she turned slacking off into an artform.

Coronamon gawked at Gao in disbelief as he got back up from the cushioned blow. The trainer was going all out now, since he had no more reason to hold back. However, after watching Gao back all the way up to the other wall, Coronamon quickly got a grasp on what the opponent was planning on doing. Since he was given the extra bit of time to react, Coronamon was easily able to sidestep Gao's oncoming attack, then attempted to counter with another new attack. "Corona Knuckle!" was called out as Coronamon's fist lit aflame and he swung at the charging Rookie.

While Maia wouldn't necessarily agree that this was all exciting, she figured that she would try to share the enthusiasm. Ignoring the buzzkill comment, the tamer smiled at Marshal. "That's great. Think you can handle it as a full-time job? Digimon-owner?" At least Corona seemed a lot more mild than Kuu! He was probably going to find all of this incredibly easy to handle! Aside from the part where he needed to hide the flaming cat-thing.
Kuu tilted his head, thinking about hiding in his fancy home and being flung across the room. "That sounds great! I want to fly! I bet it would work amazing!" Thank goodness, his tamer didn't actually own a slingshot! All the problems that the fox would cause! There was no way her parents wouldn't hear him finding some way to shoot himself across the room, if it were the case!

Thankfully, Gao was nothing if not careful with his fighting. Even a move as risky as the Dogpile was prepared with the utmost care and consideration. He smoothly shifted his posture so his arm was in front of his head, allowing him to gently roll through the attack instead of landing in a crumpled heap on the floor. Unfortunately, the roll wasn't as fast as it ideally should have been. By the time Gao rose he was still very much in knuckle range, and the fist got him right in the back instead of directly hitting in the side. The force of the blow sent him spinning, Gao nursing the new sear on his back. "Good, good! You see the opportunity, and you go for it," he said as he turned to face Coronamon once more. "Hadogken!" he shouted, aiming the attack not at Coronamon's face but instead at his feet. Through this feint, he'd ideally be able to charge in for a quick punch.
"Oh, you know it! Hold on, let me go back and get the Biggun. Dun dun dunnnn!" Grizz said, running out the door. And yes, she really just added her own dramatic dun dun dun. Nothing good could ever come of that.

Coronamon immediately jumped to avoid the fireball headed his way. In order to alleviate the pressure that the opponent was putting on him, Coronamon decided to use a projectile of his own. "Corona Flame!" The fire on Coronamon's forehead flared up. The Rookie Digimon opened his mouth and shot a fireball back at Gao.
"I think I can do this," Marshal said to Maia, immediately looking back at Coronamon and focusing his attention on the fight. He could get pretty easily distracted, sometimes.

Maia simply smiled at the answer. She supposed there was no point in trying to dampen the mood by warning him about the difficulties of having a Digimon. Marshal would learn soon enough. Instead, she watched the fight progress. It was weird watching Digimon put so much effort into a meaningless fight. Heck, even the fight between Shiro and Kuu had felt more concerning than this. Then again, those two never knew when to call things quits, so it definitely had more potential to go wrong. Gao was more likely to know when to stop the fight.
Hearing Kuu squeal a, "yay!" the girl turned to look at him. Wait, where did the bear go? This surely was going to spell disaster, too! Why was the fox so happy? Maia should have been paying better attention to the rookies' conversation!

His rush to the face was met with a projectile at point-blank range. In a real fight that would be a very risky endeavor, met with either significant blowback or a counter. Instead, being a friendly spar, Gao took the hit head on. He slide back, gently nursing the impact site and grinning at Coronamon. "You're picking up on this really quick! But can you handle my strongest technique?" he asked.
As she re-entered the room and heard this setup, Grizz let out a groan of disgust. She even dropped the giant slingshot she was dragging behind her! "Don't tell me you're actually doing this."
"Get ready for the awe-inspiring might of my Wolf Fang Fist!"
Uproarious laughter came from Grizz's corner. "Oh my god! He's really doing this! Put down the Dragon Ball Z tapes, ya big nerd!"
While visibly flustered, Gao turned his attention back to the fight. His fist moved in a blur as he swayed back and forth, feinting in ever direction before unleashing a flurry of open-hand strikes at Coronamon. If he could dodge his way out of this one, he would well and truly be ready for primetime.
Ignoring the big nerd doing his best Yamcha impersonation, Grizz began setting up The Biggun. A tiny folding stand helped support the grand behemoth, which was made of beautiful redwood and primed with at least five different rubber bands. It stood as big as Maia, once fully erected. Clearly, Grizz was not messing around. "Aaaanyway, ignoring tall dark and nerdy over there, this thing's the biggest slingshot Grizzly Pack's ever made. It could launch your cartridge no problem, kiddo. Ready to take it out for a spin?"

Marshal watched on, amazed at the fight that was progressing. Coronamon was actually doing pretty well! However, this next attack looked to be a little too tough for the poor Rookie, who had still been getting used to his new form. He took a bit of a hit and fell back, slightly dazed.
"Ow..." Coronamon groaned. He stood up and dusted himself off, still trying to continue the fight.
"That's okay, Coronamon!" Marshal cheered. "You can still do it!"
