Terrible Ideas (Maia/Isaac/Elliot)
|
Post by Elliot and Isaac Sunderland on Sept 1, 2016 0:55:12 GMT
Isaac tried not to laugh about the illusion magic idea. Please, if Kuu wanted to invent someone, he'd magic up Elliot. Or maybe a giant sock. Yes, there's Mrs. Kuu, a giant talking sock that dispenses cookies to all the hungry foxes of the world. Isaac? Not someone he probably cared for enough to specifically invent.
He smiled warmly at Maia's mom's assessment. "No, just a normal person." he said, making sure to keep his tone understanding even in the face of such an incredulous question. "I'm here to visit Maia for tutoring. I also came here from America, so she's been helping me get up to speed on my Japanese. She's a really diligent worker, you know." Okay, so the explanation was a relentless barrage of half-truths. And lies by omission. But this usually was the day of the week when Japanese lessons and Isaac sketches tended to happen, after all, and he wasn't a magic fox illusion, so at least half of his answers were true here.
He cast a brief look over to Maia, as if checking to see how he was doing. The gameplan here was simple; paint both Maia and himself in a great light, and don't cause any panics. It'd take a bit of verbal finagling, true, but that wouldn't be a problem unless Kuu decided to mess everything up and talk too much.
He was totally going to do that, wasn't he? Oh well, better roll with this while it lasted.
Upon noticing the clutter on the floor, Isaac did his best to look shocked. "Oh! This must've blown in when we opened the window. Excuse me, please." Cleaning up the mess? Isaac, you smooth operator. Apparently, he didn't sweat any details when coming up with this plan.

At least Isaac was accepting to the crazy accusation. But, tutoring? Since when did Maia tutor anyone? Even if they were from America! Yet, "I know she's a diligent worker," came so matter-of-fact from the woman's lips. She knew her daughter wasn't a failure, by any means! It was just this monster having control over her that was the issue! And possibly, now, a strange illusion of some random boy in her house, causing problems! Even if the problems were currently all made up in her head.
"So, I have the 'why', and now I need the 'how,' such as," the mother paused, "how did you get into our house without me seeing you?" Another question that was going to take some careful wording. The fact that Maia had no idea where in the house that her mother had been previously, made it impossible to have just let him in through the front door. But, the questions led to another, "and, for how long have you been here?"
These were bad questions. And, while Maia would have loved to provide some sort of tips, there was really nothing to provide. If she could have figured it out, she'd already have the situation blown over and wouldn't be grounded, anyway. So, instead, the tamer finally rose to her feet, reaching down to collect Kuu in one hand.
While Isaac found his cleaning gig to be flawless, Maia's mom still seemed quite skeptical. This was going to be really drawn out, if she was given the opportunity, wasn't it? Of course, the woman was going to let Isaac play out his entire... whatever-this-is, until he tired out. And Maia could see that. Or, maybe she was legitimately curious. Either way, it was taking too long to figure out the outcome.
Popping her lips, the sound drew attention to the tamer, who looked rather disinterested. "He's been here long enough that you're not going to make him think we're 'picture perfect'," she pointed out finally.
"He probably already knew that," Kuu pointed out, following through with Isaac's prediction. "Maia probably tells him a lot of stuff. Cause that's what you do when you're dating. Or something. I don't know. I've never been on a date!" He certainly did need a Mrs. Kuu of Socks that dispensed cookies! Then, he wouldn't need Maia for cookies! At least he wasn't asking Mrs. Quinn on a date! She obviously didn't like him enough for that, and he certainly couldn't pay for dinner!
And again, there was a loss for words.

Okay, yeah. Those questions were a lot harder to answer. Thankfully Maia took the spotlight off of him before he could come up with another crazy excuse. With questions that hard, either he'd have to know his shit really well or come up with some really lucky excuses. Either way, it'd only get everyone dug deeper into this mess, which would only lead to disaster with how hard-hitting these questions were getting. A shame. At least he tried his best.
It was worth it for the look on Maia's mom's face when she first saw him, though.
As he tried to think of a way of politely stepping down the situation, Kuu decided to drop down the truth in that special Kuu-like fashion. The situation went from bad to worse as the room fell silent, Isaac deciding that he'll be calling out both Kuu and Elliot on his gravestone if he gets killed over this. Why couldn't his first meeting with Maia's family have been nice and normal, instead of this seemingly endless string of bad choices? Figuring that with the cat out of the bag there was no way this situation could get worse, he decided to just come clean.
"Okay, that's only half the reason I came." No, really? I never could've guessed! "I'm mostly here because I've been worried about Maia. She hasn't been too happy at school lately, and we haven't been able to text or video chat in a while, and, I, well-" A red tone started to come to Isaac's face, the mark of someone who was about to step up in a potentially disastrous situation.
"And I really care about her. A lot. Your daughter's really special, and I couldn't just not be there for her when she's been feeling like this. Even if just for a quick visit, I wanted to help brighten her day a bit." The blush started to cool as he finally squeezed the words out, but a bit of pink still lingered as he continued. "I'm sorry if this isn't really the best first impression." At least he came clean about it.

Truths had a tendency of working better in these kind of situations than acts ever did. For once, Maia's mother remained utterly silent, and didn't immediately question any motives. Instead, she had to process that this was, in fact, happening. A boy liked her daughter enough to sneak in and see her? With the whole demon magic thing, it was hard to tell if a formal-talking boy was real. But, since that was broken, it seemed far more real. Either the fox was getting craftier, or this was actually a person!
Maia remained silent, crossing her arms and looking to the ground during Isaac's admitting of the full reason he was there. It was pretty embarrassing to have that spilled to her mom! Especially like this!
"You like her," at first, the tone sounded curious, but then became flat with, "and you're not magic?"
"Mom!" This was getting beyond ridiculous. "Would you stop the fox magic thing? Kuu can't even do that!" She was going to leave out that, yes, Digimon actually did have attacks. That would just make things confusing. "Isaac's my," Maia paused, taking a moment to swallow the nervous lump in her throat, "he's my boyfriend, alright?"
So, it took a bit of getting used to, imagining this situation properly. With a shake of her head, the woman had to continue processing. "Right. ...Right," she sighed. Well, this was great! It was a boy! An actual one! But, this was definitely breaking some sort of rule in the whole being grounded thing, wasn't it?
Fixing her sweater, Mrs. Quinn turned to walk to the door, strangely casually. "Dinner will be ready soon," fell from her lips, as she still seemed to be trying to take in the entire situation, while not overreacting any further than she already had. "I expect you to be downstairs within five minutes, young lady," the woman started, as she placed one foot outside of the door. "Isaac," the adult addressed, specifically, in an almost warning tone. "I'll be setting out an extra plate for you, so I had better not find out that you've decided not to stay. Leaving right before a meal just isn't a good impression." With the final bit of advice, the woman disappeared down the stairs, leaving a very confused Kuu.
"Do you guys think I get dinner downstairs, too?" Well! Nobody invited him!

Isaac bristled slightly at the casual insult towards Maia. Come on, she was great! Was it really that hard to believe someone could see Maia as amazingly as he did? Still, at least she left, and now things seemed okay. Maybe. Possibly. Probably not. "Thank you very much, Mrs. Quinn!" he said, the cheerfulness trying to push down the nerves currently building up in his throat. On one hand, this wasn't a disaster! On the other hand, oh god, there was still so much room for this to be a disaster!
Once the dust settled he turned to Maia, frowning slightly. "I made a huge mess, didn't I? I'm really sorry," he said. Sure, he was really excited to have a chance to eat with Maia again, and maybe meet the parents in a less scream-y fashion, but he was also concerned that he was giving poor Maia a massive headache with his presence alone. Maybe pushing him out the window would've been the smarter idea after all.
Then Isaac felt his phone buzz. Quickly he pulled out his pocket and checked it, only for his nose to wrinkle in irritation at the text he got.
"Are you dead yet?"
He showed the phone to Maia, sighing a bit. As irritating as the text was, though, at least Elliot had lightened the mood a tiny bit. "Can you believe it? After everything I've done for this kid," he muttered, now having a new goal in mind. It was officially Prove Elliot Wrong Day.
"So, is there anything I should keep in mind for Family Dinner Night? You know, besides no Digimon stuff."

Isaac's concerns were probably for the best. Maia couldn't really imagine what family dinner night was going to be like tonight. Most nights, it was relatively silent, and at least one person at the table would have a book and not pay attention to the rest of the room. This was going to be a relatively new experience for everyone involved!
"She didn't kick you out, so we might be alright?" That didn't sound overly positive! But, really, there was nothing absolute about this situation! This was some tricky territory, and Maia couldn't be certain that there wasn't some sort of trap involved in all of this. Looking at the text message, the girl couldn't help but snicker. "I don't know, he did get you into my room." At this point, if that was a helpful or harmful thing was up for debate!
Now, as far as advice went? "Uh," this was hard to think of! Maia really wouldn't be able to think of much as important things to keep in mind. "Well, my dad actually likes Kuu, so Digimon's only touchy with my mom," she felt the need to inform. "It should be alright," the teen murmured, hesitantly, "I mean, there's not a lot that can go wrong at a dinner, right?" She really needed to be careful not to jinx it!
"I'm going to dinner too, guys," Kuu established, which his tamer did not shoot down. "This is gonna be fun!" And, with that, the fox scampered to the door, and began working on not falling face-first down the stairs.
There was a nervous groan that came from the teen's throat, as she reached to take Isaac's hand, "I'm not sure if you've got much to worry about, with Kuu there." After all, the little monster was a good show-stealer! Maybe, that was part of why she didn't stop him from attending dinner. Then again, Kuu needed food just as much as everybody else! If not more! But, before walking to the door, the girl paused, "do you have any specific questions before Dinner Night?" After all, if there was anything that needed answered, it was best to establish it before they walked downstairs!

Isaac took Maia's hesitation as a vote of confidence, considering that she would be the first one to tell him to his face when he's screwed. It was tricky territory indeed, but he was just going to get down there, be himself, and hope everything turned out for the best. Kuu being there helped, but what if that brought the conversation to Digimon? Oh god, what if that brought the conversation to being a spirit user? When Maia's mom was already freaking out about demons, "by the way, I turn into an imp" was probably the worst possible thing Maia's boyfriend could ever stay.
Isaac looked thoughtful for a second, then shrugged and lobbed his Digivice out the window. Better safe than sorry. It landed in the bushes, upon which he heard a thunk. "Hey! I was joking!" came the protesting voice of Elliot.
"Sorry!" Isaac called. "I'm not dead yet, but lets call that your inheritance."
"I'll call the mourners." And with that Elliot prepared the long walk back home, Isaac rolling his eyes.
With Maia explaining the situation, there was a renewed confidence in Isaac's step. He gladly took Maia's hand, following her to the door before stopping as she asked her next question. It was a very important one to consider, especially because asking the wrong questions at the dinner table could make today a nightmare instead of a dream come true. "Mind telling me a bit about your family? Just quick little details, so I can try and find common ground with any of them. That'd probably be a huge help.
Other than that, I'm ready when you are."

An alarmed expression crossed the teen's face, watching Isaac chuck his digivice out the window. Before she could question it, a voice came from the bushes, and the teen found herself sighing in relief. Oh good, he wasn't just completely losing his mind here. Then again, how did Isaac know that Elliot was in that spot? Jeez, brothers must really know each other, or something.
"About them?" Maia's nose scrunched a little, trying to think about what she could deem important. "Uhm," well, what was there to say? "My mom graduated from an art college, and works from home," she paused, "but, she's been helping my dad's sister out, because she's expecting a baby soon?" Ugh, what was there to say about the family? "My dad knows a lot of different languages, and uses them to get a rise out of Mom sometimes." Given, Maia wasn't always a fan of those times, either, considering she couldn't figure out a word of what he was saying most of the time. "I, uh, don't know. I want to say they're a normal family, but I get this feeling that we're really not," she admitted, sheepishly. After all, what was normal? "Keep your phone in your pocket at the table. My mom doesn't like technology out for dinner. Says it's rude. Anything else, barring live animals, is fair game." Well, that seemed like a pretty simple rule, right? No cell phones or live rats on the table! Easy! Or... something!
With that, she continued walking out of the room, seeming to find no other ideas of what to fill in. After all, it was better to learn through experience, anyway, right?
Once they reached the dining room, Isaac would find a rectangular table, where four places were set, and a stool off to the side, where Kuu was waiting [im]patiently. At the table, a man already sat in one of the chairs. Red hair was brushed neatly to the side, as the man was leaned over a book on the table. It appeared as though dinner was relatively formal, or he hadn't changed out of his work clothes, as Mr. Quinn was still wearing a gray, button down shirt, with sleeves folded up to his elbows and black dress pants.
Even once Maia entered the room, he didn't look up from the words in his novel, seeming in his own world, until her mom walked by, hitting him softly in the back of the head with her hand as she passed. "You don't need to read tonight," she chided, fixing some of the silverware on the table, "Maia has company over, after all." To this, there was only a soft grumble that escaped the father's closed lips, seeming to ignore the statement. What a friendly family.

Isaac listened attentively to Maia's advice, constantly jotting down mental notes about the few, yet important, details there were to spare. "Does she call him a devil for speaking in tongues?" he asked, getting the one joke he had out of the way so it wouldn't come up at the worst possible time during this dinner data.
The rest of the information was silently and diligently processed. If anything but phones and live animals was fair game, that was still more leeway than what most houses had. "That shouldn't be a problem," Isaac said confidently. "Back at home, mom'd kill us if we brought anything to the table, let alone phones. Besides, I'm here to meet your family, not do other stuff.
Or, at least, now I'm here to meet your family." To think today had started with the simple mission statement of sneak in and brighten Maia's day. And now, here they were. Hand in hand he followed Maia out of the room, ready to see the horrifying secrets that lied within the Quinn household.
Shock and horror! It was perfectly normal. It was interesting how much of a complete transformation Maia's mom had made, from intimidating and furious to relaxed and casual. Sure, she was still chiding away at the family, but she was treating her husband way more laxly than she treated Maia earlier. It gave Isaac hope that this was going to be a perfectly normal family dinner.
How long had it been since he had one of those?
He slipped his hand into his pocket, hitting the mute button on his phone a few extra times for good measure, and steeled himself for touchdown at the table. Of course, before he could do that, there was one more person left to greet. Admittedly, this was going to be the hardest part. On their first few dates, Maia had made it perfectly clear that her dad didn't want any boys in the house. Now he was going to be sitting across the dinner table from him. If Maia's mom was scary enough, her dad was going to probably send shivers down his spine. It didn't help that Maia was his first girlfriend, and he really had no idea what to say in these sorts of situations.
Well, in the end, honesty was the best policy.
"Hello, Mr. Quinn. My name is Isaac. It's a pleasure to meet you," he said, bowing respectfully. Maia's dad might not have even seen, considering he was super into his book, but Isaac was still going to do his damn best to leave a good impression.

Shooting a playful glare, Maia lightly thudded the back of her hand against his shoulder. "Shush, you," she teased. "Don't give her any ideas, at least!" How had that not been a topic of conversation in the family, yet? Regardless, the teen was trying her best to not get nervous about this entire ordeal. Which, was really hard! She really hadn't had any company over for dinner since moving to Japan! It had been quite some time.
Waiting to the side, the girl waited to see what the first impression would be like between both male figures. Rather than lifting his eyes from his book, the man simply let out a small hum of acknowledgement, placing a finger on the sentence in his book that he was attempting to read. Before exiting the room, Maia's mother found this a good time to hip-check his chair. "Dear, do you like the book more than your fingers?" Soon, this was followed with the woman shuffling out of the room for something or another.
This warranted an exasperated sigh, as the man pulled a bookmark out from beneath his reading material. With a pause, honey eyes scanned to see if his wife had, in fact, left the room, barely looking at Isaac in passing, before looking down at his book again. "Where did your friend go?" This warranted an alarmed look from his daughter, but no particular explanation until he received his own answer. From Isaac, of course. Casually, he added, "you didn't get into the second floor window by yourself, did you?" Really? Did he know all of this, or was he just grasping at straws?
Closing his book was timed almost perfectly with the tapping of Mrs. Quinn's feet as she re-entered the room, only to receive, "I think I left my glasses in the bedroom. Will you check for me? Should be on the dresser." With a sigh, and some sort of grumbling, the woman left the room again, to continue her hunt. During this time, Maia's father shifted, reaching into his pocket, only to pull out the very glasses he had just requested, and set them on the table by his silverware. Still, he seemed more focused in paying attention to re-opening his book and finishing that last paragraph, rather than anything else. "Sit," he advised, despite not seeming to be paying much attention to the two.
Fighting a smirk on her face, Maia eyed the glasses on the table, before looking to Isaac. There was no way he was going to find all of this a normal family thing, was he? Still, she made a motion for Isaac to sit in one of the chairs, before taking one of the empty seats for herself. This felt like it had a good chance of being insanely awkward.

Yep. As Isaac figured, Maia's dad was currently in a world of his own. At least it seemed to be the case willingly, judging by the misdirection he pulled with his glasses. Seemed like he would be picking book after fingers after all, or at least he would once Maia's mom went back to the room. Judging by Maia's smirk this seemed to be a common occurrence, or at least one that happened often enough to get recognized.
Was this their secret signal for talking about Kuu, prior to the incident? Isaac couldn't be sure if he meant 'friend' or 'friend' with his prior comment.
"Oh, do you mean my brother?" Isaac asked, deciding to play it safe for now. "He gave me a boost before heading back home. We may not have been here before, but he's getting surprisingly good at finding his way around." As for what je was doing now? Well, when a big new release dropped, there was only really one place Elliot decided to go. It was amazing Isaac was able to pry him off of World of Warcraft long enough for this plan to work! Still, he decided to let the first half of the question answer the second for him. Maia's father already seemed to understand what was afoot nine times out of ten, judging by what Maia and Kuu always said about him.
At Maia's father's request Isaac took a seat, picking whichever one was across the table from Maia. He was going to need all the help and support he could get from her to survive this crazy day. Besides, if he was directly across from her, he'd easily be able to pick up the atmosphere in the room from her facial expression. It would make finding which conversation topics worked and which were no-gos so much easier. "What are you reading?"

There was a pause in the reading, as Maia's father seemed to need a moment for everything to fully click into place. "Your brother is incredibly tall, then." Had he only seen the giant monster giving Isaac a lift, then, and not the boy that it had turned into? "Would have let you in the door, but that would have been too easy." What, so he was going to make people work for their right to see his daughter?
"It would've been nice to know that you knew," Maia pointed out, with crossed arms.
The retort was an obvious one. "Would have sent you a text, but one of us no longer has a phone." Still, the man was absorbed in his book, seeming to only pause to not confuse his own words with the ones on the page. Finally, the page turned, and a bookmark was placed. Leaning back, he grabbed his glasses off of the table, lowering them in one hand. "Kuu, will you put these by the stove?"
A few hops away from his seat, Kuu paused, "table scraps?"
"Yes. Table scraps."
With a squeal, the little digimon bounded to the hand, delicately grasping the frame of the glasses with his mouth, and sped off to his destination. Within moments, he had returned to waiting for food to be served. Though it seemed to be taking far too long. For this, he had to blame Dad, who was making Not-Mom run around the house for something that was never actually lost.
With the page finished, and the book closed, Maia's father turned the cover to Isaac. Of course the title wasn't in English, or even Japanese for that matter! The label seemed to be Russian, or at least something with abnormal letters, reading, "Мать" with even more alarming lettering to make up whatever-that-was for the author's name directly above the title.
If anyone seemed less than interested, it was Maia, who only glanced at the cover, before looking over to her dad with a glazed-over stare. "I can't read Russian."
To that, her dad simply shrugged. "Your loss. They print it in English, too."
And, with several moments passing, Maia's mother re-entered the room. "I cannot find your glasses anywhere," she huffed, hands on her hips. "I guess you won't be able to see your food tonight." That didn't seem like much of a loss. Especially since, if he was capable of reading his book at that distance, eating food should be easy enough. So, she wasn't going to fret over it.
But, now there was a silence, and the woman was going to fill it. "So, Isaac! How did you and Maia meet?"
Maia could only hope that he wouldn't say 'in a trash can.'

Maia's dad seemed to be way more supportive and relaxed about this than Maia made him sound, considering his comments about the door. Briefly Isaac felt like a huge idiot for planning all of this sneaking around without guessing that he could just ask for permission. Then again, even Maia seemed surprised about how calmly he was taking everything. Isaac just chalked it up to things for keeping in mind in the future.
Like how tall Elliot was. Considering that Isaac knew a growth spurt would be hitting Elliot any day now, it was a statement that rang more true than Maia's father could ever realize. That was tallness in the future, though, rather than the problem solving of the present. "Eh, not really. But we're pretty clever at solving problems," he explained, letting Maia's father come to his own conclusions. The mental image of Elliot on stilts was probably the best one he could think of at the moment. At the second comment from Maia's father, Isaac grinned a little. "That's fine. Getting a chance to see her was worth the climb," he said. Sure, Mr. Quinn might have made him work forcthe right to see his daughter, but there was no work that could ever dissuade Isaac from her.
He watched curiously as Maia's father and Kuu put their plan into motion, with an efficiency that suggested they had made bargain for table scraps many times in the past. Briefly, Isaac wondered what Maia's mom thought of her husband making pacts with a demon, but he shook the thought to focus on the book that was placed in front of him. Surprise, surprise, he couldn't read it. There went a possible conversation topic. He nodded to concur with Maia's statement, but figured he would at least ask a little further. "What's it about?"
And then Maia's mother made her return, serving up a question that Isaac definitely wasn't going to give the full story of. "Well, me and my brother, while sharing a body, tumbled out of a trash can and met your daughter" wasn't a story that Isaac wanted to tell Maia's parents. Or anybody, really. In fact, he would be a far happier person if he never brought that incident up again. Instead he decided to just tell the relevant parts of the truth. "My brother and I were doing some exploring, getting a feel for the city. It was only our third day here, so there was still so much we needed to get accustomed to," he explained. "And while we were there we bumped into Maia. When you're at Scramble Crossing and don't have a strong grasp of the language meeting another English speaker makes things so much less confusing. So we decided to stick together to keep from being overwhelmed. We helped her do some shopping, she helped us navigate back home, and we ended up chatting the day away. She's probably the first friend we met here in Japan, really." And nowadays she was so much more.

"Revolutionary factory workers. In Russia," the man answered, dully. "If I had been given more notice," eyes lifted to look at Isaac, "it would have been a book about guns. Turns out, it's not easy to find those with," he paused to look at the clock, "less than thirty minutes notice."
This warranted another nudge from the 'conveniently passing' mother unit.
With a sigh, he continued, "but, since we're not in America where I can have my gun collection, I'll have to stick with refreshing my memory on Russian for work." What a warming welcome!
Either way, things continued on, and Isaac began to explain meeting Maia. Luckily, this left out the trash can incident, and Kuu didn't seem to keen on adding it in for once. "Scramble Crossing?" The mother hummed, curiously. Well, that wasn't anything Digimon related! "I figured you had met in school."
During this time, Maia and her father had began gesturing in ASL at one another. Whatever they were talking about, it seemed to be relatively fast-paced. Perhaps to keep Mrs. Quinn of out the loop, considering she found herself crossing her arms, staring at them. "In front of guests with this, too?" Well! She was finicky! "I can't even understand you two! You use too much slang! Slow it down!"
"That's probably the point," Kuu chirped, matter-of-fact.
Breaking what had otherwise been a relatively emotionless, or possibly serious, face, Mr. Quinn began snickering at his daughter, while she crossed her arms at him. The next sign, judging from the frustrated expression, may have very well been along the lines of, 'it's not funny!' But, apparently, her dad felt that it was.
Throwing her hands up, Maia's mother let out a huff, "Maia, stop leaving your guest out of your conversations. Isaac, would you like anything to drink?" While the beginning of the sentence had begun harsh, of course it was going to sound friendly the second Maia's boyfriend was addressed!

Elliot would've probably eaten that kind of thing up, if he was at the proper reading level to understand it. Oh, and able to speak Russian. That was a huge barrier as well. Still, judging by his tone, Isaac had the feeling Maia's father was blaming him for his unexpected entry. A fair thing to blame him for, even if it was somewhat irritating. Then again, judging by the irritation about his gun collection, it seemed that he was just in a grumpy mood in general.
At the very least, his line of work sounded really cool. What would an American in Japan need to speak Russian for? "What sort of work do you do?" Isaac asked, the interest in his voice quite genuine.
Isaac was super relieved to see that Maia's mom wasn't pressing the issue any further, too. No garbage can story for today! Instead she seemed curious about why not school, an answer that Isaac was a bit more well versed in. "I actually hadn't started school yet," he pointed out. "Our mom didn't tell us it was a move at first, probably because she was still scouting our new home out and seeing if it was good enough. As far as Elliot and I knew, we were just going on vacation. Once the move was finalized we were put into the school system, but until then it was just a normal winter break." Was that weird? Now Isaac was feeling self-conscious about that being weird. Thankfully, any weirdness there fell firmly on his mother's shoulders, not on his.
Then came the signing. Isaac had been keeping this little tidbit secret from Maia for a while, but he was trying to pick up sign language for the dual purposes of better communicating with her and impressing her. Sure, sometimes he studied it instead of working to improve his grades, but at least he was learning something. When Maia and her father started, Isaac figured this would be the perfect time to see how much he had improved. Maybe he could even keep track of the conversation!
To quote noted philosopher Illidan Stormrage, "You are not prepared!"
Isaac's eyes practically boggled as he saw how quickly Maia and her father's hands were moving. Some of their gestures didn't even look like words, but Isaac couldn't tell the slang and jargon from actual words that he didn't understand. He tried to pore over the conversation, combing it for any words he did understand, but even at best he would likely only pick up the table scraps of the conversation.
Maybe it would at least give a hint of what Maia's father found so funny. Isaac desperately hoped it wasn't the trash can story.
"Oh, no need to worry about me. Trust me, we talk plenty," Isaac said, hopefully freeing Maia from the prying eyes of her mother on at least this topic. The poor girl was under the microscope at once, so Isaac hoped she would at least be able to sign in peace. With that said, he tried to decide on what he wanted to drink today. Not sure what they had in the house, he figured he'd just go with old reliable. "I would like some water, please."
