Terrible Ideas (Maia/Isaac/Elliot)

Food is ready! Isaac perked up as soon as Maia's mom made her announcement, only to be disappointed when it turned out that meant Maia had to leave. He met her confused glance with his own, figuring that if she didn't know what was up something had to be afoot. Was this going to be the continuation of their argument from earlier? Or was Maia going to be dragged off for a ton of unwanted and unnecessary dating pointers? It could just be that Maia's mom genuinely needed a hand with the kitchen, but somehow that seemed like the least probable answer in Isaac's eyes. Either way, it seemed there was no way for her to worm her way out of this duty, and that meant he would be left alone with her father.
Oh. And Kuu. That made things both easier and harder simultaneously.
Like when Kuu asked questions like this! Isaac wasn't sure why he chose to ask that in front of Maia's father instead of when the two of them were alone, but now he had to find out how to answer it. "Well, it'd be rude to talk about them behind their backs, wouldn't it?" Isaac told Kuu. He turned to Maia's father afterwards. "So I'll just say it directly. You're both very kind, and I really appreciate you having me." The smile on his face came surprisingly naturally and genuinely. It seemed like, embarrassment and all, Isaac was starting to feel quite comfortable around Maia's family. Maybe when he actually tried and let his guard lower, things actually went well for him for a change! It briefly made him wonder if he could afford to start lowering it more often.
And then he remembered the laundry list of things lurking around the corner, just waiting to hurt Elliot. So much for that idea.
Figuring that he might as well try and come up with conversation topics of his own as well, he asked Maia's father "You said you had a gun collection, right? Are you a hobbyist, or did you just like to collect?" What better way to get to know the parents than to ask about stuff they cared about? Stuff that wasn't demon fox magic?

While out of the room, Maia could only wonder where the topic would go between her boyfriend and father. Was it going to be full of intimidating moments? Or, would they actually have a bonding moment? Sure, the teen could worry about her own fate, out of earshot of the boys, but she'd much rather think about the state of the dining room.
But, it wasn't going badly as of yet.
Eyebrow remained raised, listening to what Isaac had to say about the parents. While the boy seemed honest, the man couldn't help but smirk, "I'm surprised you'd say we're kind, considering you're a hostage at a dinner table." Well, when he put it that way...
Still, Mr. Quinn was a little surprised to have the guns brought up. Who would have thought that a teenage boy would inquire on the collection, when it once belonged to his girlfriend's dad? Then again, a kid that fought 'demons' probably wasn't all that frightened by anything that a human could do, short of dropping a bomb. "I suppose it was just a hobby," he shrugged, "there was a shooting range not too far from where we lived, making it a convenient pastime." This made the transition to Japan a little less comfortable, considering. "They're with my brother, now."
Making her way back into the room, Maia found herself carrying two different dishes, with some attempt to not drop either of them. "Mom made too much stuff," she mumbled, sheepishly, sliding potatoes and gravy onto the table, before disappearing again, only to return with a tray of cheesy looking biscuits. She waited for a moment, until her mom finally entered the room, bearing a plate of chicken, and a bowl of rice.
"I had no idea what you liked," the woman explained, with a small laugh, "so I thought I'd cover a few different bases." On short notice, she thought she did pretty alright! While her daughter sat down, Mrs. Quinn looked over everything on the table, to make sure that it seemed in order. "Does it look alright?"

"I mean, I sneak in to visit your grounded daughter, and your reactions are "here's the table" instead of "here's the door." That seems pretty kind to me," Isaac said. Knowing his own home, people would've never have been able to get away with something like that. Especially when that man was still living there. But that was life with a control freak in a nutshell, wasn't it? Then again, glass half empty, glass half full. There were tons of ways of looking at a situation.
He nodded as he listened to Maia's father talk about his collection. Personally, guns weren't his cup of tea, but everyone needed a hobby to keep track of. At least it was a more productive one than Elliot's World of Warcraft kick. "Ah, I see," he said, unsure if there was really any follow up here. Maia's father was a pretty quiet man, who seemed to leave a topic closed once he brought it up. And it wasn't like he needed to ask if the collection was missed or not, judging by his grumbly reaction about having to leave them behind. Still, it was always good learning a bit more about the people he was talking to.
Now, Isaac had been expecting this next part to be an ambush. After all, there was no way Maia's mother could have spontaneously whipped up an entire feast, right? When Maia brought in the first two plates and commented that her mom made too much food, he figured it wouldn't be a big deal. "Want a hand with that?" he offered as he noticed her making an attempt not to drop either of the two, taking one plate off of her hands if she wished or letting it be if she was fine carrying both.
Then she left and returned with the next plate. And then her mom returned with the next plate. Isaac's eyes widened as he realized just how much food was put out on such short notice. That was a bigger dinner than he had ever had back at home! It smelled amazing,, to boot, and Isaac found himself almost missing the first question from Maia's mom as he got lost in the appetizing scent. Elliot may have been the family gourmet, but that didn't mean Isaac appreciated a meal this great looking any less.
"It looks amazing," he said, a bit of warmth returning to his spaced out voice. Isaac was starting to wonder if he had enough lunch today. Nah, less lunch meant more chance to dig into this amazing meal. "Thank you very much!"

With dinner served, Kuu was quick to unwind himself from Isaac's chair, and sneak underneath the table. There was little to guess with where the fox was going to wait, considering a deal had been made earlier in the evening. Surprisingly, he was doing quite well about keeping quiet and out of the way of an easily distressed mother!
"Oh good," the woman smiled, taking her seat, "feel free to eat as much as you'd like." With enough said, she made motions for everyone to start eating.
Maia waited a little, for others to take some of the food, before touching any herself. "This is still way too much," she murmured, trying to figure out what she even wanted. Jeez. Fill the table, when feeding an indecisive girl. That's a great way to confuse someone! "How much of this were you actually planning on making?"
This only received a disinterested shrug and, "oh, I don't know. I didn't think the chicken was enough, so I got a little carried away!" Only a little?
There wasn't any hesitation on Mr. Quinn's part, as he filled his plate. "I'm not complaining." Well, no. Food was great! And, any time he had enough to make a mound of food on his plate was a great night. A little weird, but still a great night. After a few bites, he began talking, while taking a small portion of one of the biscuits and ducking it under the table for a hungry fox. "Still a shame there are no shooting ranges around here. Would like to show Isaac one."
Throwing a disapproving glance to her husband, the woman let out a sigh, "what is with you, and needing to take children to places with guns? Are you trying to scare him to death?"
"Don't think I can scare him," was the retort. "And the rules were that they had to be at least ten. I doubt Maia is dating a ten year old." Although, Isaac really did look... small. But, hey, he wasn't defacing their house with spray paint, so the man really didn't care. Also, he trusted that his daughter had enough common sense to not be interested in that large of an age gap! "Irrelevant, anyway." After all, no guns meant no shooting! Which, worked just fine for probably everyone else at the table.
Maia barely seemed to pay much mind to it, only adding, "guns are too loud. And unnecessary." Coming from a girl with a pet fox that essentially carried a bullet around all day, it seemed like it should be hypocritical! But, at the same time, Kuu's cartridge wasn't really a bullet. And Digimon were a totally different kind of weapon.
Still, Maia's mother was clinging to a different part of the conversation. Age. "So, are you two in the same grade?" Probably not. In fact, almost definitely not. But, that was the most polite way that she could think of addressing the subject!

Isaac didn't need to be told twice. Once everyone had made their choices Isaac started loading up his plate, taking a healthy amount of everything present. The cheesy biscuits seemed like obvious favorites, although he restrained himself somewhat due to not wanting to spend an entire meal eating bread. He definitely could, though. Especially when said bread was paired with cheese. There were few combinations on Earth more mouthwatering, especially when they smelled as delicious as these. Judging by the huge plates he and Maia's father were currently nursing, it seemed that Maia's assessment of 'made too much' was a little bit off the mark.
The fact that Maia's dad actually wanted to include him in an activity? Now, that was an assessment way off of the mark. Isaac figured it would have been tough earning the rare and coveted Dadpproval, and yet it seemed he was already under consideration as being pretty okay. Well, unless the gun range would've been paired with the Mildly Threatening Dad Talk, but Isaac wasn't worried. Instead he smiled politely at Maia's father, saying "Thank you for the offer." Although it seemed Maia's mother wasn't the biggest on the idea, citing the fact that her husband apparently did it a lot. Now Isaac had the hilarious mental image of him trying to teach a tiny Maia how to shoot.
He went to assure Maia's mother about her worries, but then found himself running smack-dab into a major worry of his own. The subject of an age gap had to be brought up. Dear lord, why did the subject of an age gap have to be brought up? Okay, so it was about grades, but still. He found himself wishing that the Japanese school system had more than 3 years of high school. "I'm a sophomore and she's a senior" sounded much more of an acceptable age gap than "Well, I'm in my first year, and she's in her last." At least it hadn't been the case he feared of starting in junior high, though! That would've gotten him laughed out of the house for sure.
Isaac had been wrestling with his insecurities the whole day, however. This may have been a major one, but he wasn't going to let it beat him. He simply buckled down, lowered his head, and continued pushing through the storm known as his brain. He'd have to just tear the question off like a fresh bandage. "No, sadly. I'm in my first year of high school here," he said, fighting the urge to blush from embarrassment remarkably well. Besides, with how he had handled the question, he could've been 15 or 16. And the latter wouldn't be much of an age gap at all!

It seemed like every few bites of food that her father took was coupled with sticking a small portion of whatever he was eating underneath the table for Kuu. While Maia wanted to tell the man to try not to turn her Digimon into a blimp, she didn't really want to draw attention to it, as her mom was somehow oblivious. Kuu wasn't a dog! He didn't need that much food to sustain him! His tamer still wasn't even really sure how much food a Digimon needed!
While Isaac seemed entirely nervous about admitting his school year, the feasting man didn't even bat an eye. He just continued to eat, and feed the Rookie under the table. The only input he gave was, "see? He's not ten." Problem solved! Shooting range, here they come! ...Except, not, because he still didn't have any guns. Oh well. One could dream. Unless, of course, the boy was an incredibly smart ten year old. But, that was highly doubted. Ten year olds probably didn't care much about breaking into their girlfriend's houses, let alone actually having girlfriends.
Mrs. Quinn had stopped moving, momentarily, as she did some simple math to figure out what age range that put the boy at. Finally, she turned to look at Maia, and opened her mouth, only to be interrupted by, "no," from her daughter. "I don't know what you're going to say, but no." It was always a safe bet that Maia's mom really shouldn't talk in front of boys!
But, that didn't stop her. "I figured you liked older boys, Mai." And, there it was.
The tamer completely stopped what she was doing, coughing, and covering her mouth. Amber eyes attempted to burn holes into her mother's oblivious expression to no avail. "Who says something like that?" Obviously, her mother did. Still, she felt the need to cover that with, "it's only like two years. It shouldn't matter, anyway." Since when did Maia have a preference as far as age went?
"I was just--"
"Tal, you're doing that thing again," was the quick interruption provided by her husband. "You know, the one where you keep digging a hole for yourself."
This created an innocent expression, as Maia's mother tried to fully establish how offensive her wording could have been. It hadn't been meant that way! It was just a statement! "That's not how I meant it," the talkative woman puffed, before looking to Isaac. "There is absolutely nothing wrong with an age difference. I was only making conversation."

Digimon were digital, weren't they? Isaac had no idea how much of a difference was made by them eating table scraps, with the obvious exception of taste. Even that Isaac was only sure about on a guess. For all he knew Kuu was just big on the feeling of eating, liking whatever was put in front of him so long as it was chewy. Isaac not having a partner was frankly a huge hindrance on his ability to properly understand Digimon, because even when transformed his thought patterns tended to skew entirely towards those of his usual human self. Moreso than anyone else he knew in Shibuya, to him Digimon remained truly alien.
He was incredibly relieved to see that nobody had much concern over the age gap. After all, it wasn't like he was a 10 year old graffiti genius. In fact, if anything, Maia's mom seemed to be expecting an age gap in the other direction. This subject seemed to be a particularly embarrassing point for Maia, likely since it was the first time taste in boys came up during this dinner. Something told Isaac that if the parents started grilling her about why she chose him, poor Maia would just fade away like a heavily embarrassed ghost.
Still, was it true? Signs pointed to no, considering she was dating a rather young looking 15 year old, but now that little bit of curiosity lingered. Briefly, Isaac wondered what he could do to look older, but he had the feeling if he showed up with a beard Maia would disown him on the spot. Oh well. Whether it was true or not, at least Isaac was glad to be the exception.
For at least the fifth time today Maia's mom was acquiring a bad case of foot-in-mouth disease. Isaac had to wonder if her husband was always so vigilant at pointing out when she was digging herself deeper with her comments. Not that Isaac entirely minded. Honestly, he was in too good of a mood to even be offended by what she was saying! He had the feeling the rest of the family desperately wanted her to stop, though, so he decided not to stoke the fires of the conversation any further. "It's okay," he said, to let her know he wasn't offended at least, before taking another eager bite of dinner. "These biscuits are amazing!" he added once he was done chewing.
Now, Isaac had learned a lot about Maia's dad, but very little about her mom. Other than that she threw the wildest parties and had a sudden interest in Jesus. If he wanted to get to know Maia's family better, he'd have to try and check in on her as well. "So, do you have any hobbies?" he asked her, half wondering if this would lead to another embarrassing story from Maia's father.

As far as Kuu was concerned with all of this, food was absolutely amazing. Nobody really told him if he should eat it, but Digimon got hungry, too! And Kai had said that human food was okay! If the little fox could live off of cookies for a solid month, this could only be an improvement, right? But, with Not-Mom distracted, the monster found himself just eating away. These were really good biscuits!
Sure enough, Maia would have loved to disappear during all of this. She couldn't, but the blonde really wanted to! What made her mom think that it was a good idea to bring up taste in boys in front of her boyfriend? Especially when the suspicion didn't match her date! With any luck, Isaac wasn't going to do something dumb and try to act older somehow. Or look older. The girl wasn't entirely sure how he'd go about it, but she wouldn't have any of that. Things just needed to stay the same.
"Thank you," Maia's mother smiled, looking over the food. Luckily, for once, they weren't made from a box! Though, if they had been, it would have been her secret! But, she seemed a little surprised at a question about her own hobbies. "I don't really have any," the woman admitted, with a shrug. She didn't seem to be covering up anything, but who didn't have a single hobby?
This warranted a question from Mr. Quinn of, "yes, what do you do all day?"
And then the woman was glaring at her husband, flustered, "I do plenty of things! But, cleaning and working just don't make good hobbies!" Well, there was certainly some truth to that!
"Don't you write fan-fiction or something? That's a hobby."
And, now Maia's mother was frowning, and searching for something to throw at the man. "And you say I'm digging a grave!" Needless to say, if Maia's mother could ground a grown man, she certainly would have by now. Again, the woman attempted to regain her composure, and flip the subject onto someone else. "How about you, Isaac? What are your hobbies?" Yes! That was far more important than her hobbies!

There were many ways Isaac expected this day to go. He had expected to be firmly under the microscope from both of Maia's parents, each having their own reasons to dislike him, and ending up the most uncomfortable person in the room by a huge margin. He had expected his age, his lack of clear life direction, his height, and the Digital World to lead to him basically being killed in front of a live studio audience. Instead, when it came to embarrassment, he was at a comfortable third place behind Maia and her mother. How the heck did High Inquisitor Mrs. Maia'smomerson end up being the most embarrassed one through all of this? He hadn't expected his question to be another tipping point, and yet when Maia's dad started talking he knew exactly what was about to happen.
Well, not exactly-exactly. There were some revelations Isaac never saw coming. Maia's mom? Writing fan fiction? He tried to picture it, and his mind boggled. He almost found himself wanting to ask what kind of stories she wrote, just because he couldn't fathom a mom who still did that kind of thing. Did she keep writing about the fandoms of her youth, or was she keeping her pulse on the hot trends of the new generation? Elliot read the stuff more than Isaac did, which was to say "a lot" compared to "barely ever," but the idea of stumbling upon a super popular story that turned out to be written by Maia's mom was a strange mix of hilarious and disturbing.
He got the feeling that Maia's mother being put through the crucible was almost more embarrassing for her than being yelled at, though, so when Maia's mom through out a quick subject change Isaac was happy to take it. He tried to think on what his were, since lately life had been a bit of a blur due to the Digital World, but soon he was able to get a good sense of how to answer the question. "I've got a few of them," he offered casually. "Exploration's a big one. The day Elliot and I got here, we were already going all over Shibuya to see what it was like. I'm not as big on gaming as he is, but sometimes I'll play a few. And, well-"
Isaac looked over to Maia. He remembered confiding his huge doubts about going for drama beforehand to her, and the two never really had much chance to talk about it since. There was always something bigger and more important breathing down their necks. That's why his answer was directed almost as much to her as it was to her family. "Drama. I haven't had much time to pursue it, but once I get a firmer grip on the language I think I'll try and audition for a few roles."

Maia's mother was definitely glad that the boy took interest in taking the spotlight. Nobody needed to know about her writing! Or the fanbase! What if he tried to look it up online, or something? That would be beyond embarrassing for a grown woman! So, instead she nodded and listened to the list of things that Isaac considered hobbies.
Who was Elliot? Ah, who cared? She could only imagine it was a relative or something. Probably his brother? The topic was no longer on the woman, so she didn't really mind whatever he was talking about. As long as it didn't turn to demons, that is. Video games and exploring didn't sound like demons, so everything was fine.
And, wanting to be in drama? That was a totally normal thing. "So, you'd like to be an actor someday? Or, just for fun?"
The tamer listened to her boyfriend's explanation of his hobbies, holding her breath in hopes that he wouldn't slip up about Digital Adventures anywhere in there. But, hearing about drama again led to a breath of relief. That included her feelings toward the subject. It was good that he was considering actually pursuing the subject! "I'm sure you'll do great, when you audition." Heck, if he was comfortable with it, she'd go to the audition to support him!
Kuu seemed on board for it, as well, as there was an awkward 'thud!' under the table of the fox running into Isaac's chair leg, before scrambling onto the boy's lap, making another 'thud!' as his head hit the underside of the table. "Ow-ow," the little monster grumbled, trying to get Isaac's attention. Chances were, he already had it with all the banging around he was doing! "I can help! I'm great at acting!" The Digimon nodded his head rapidly enough to 'thud!' his nose on the table, but seemed undeterred. "Can I help you learn to do the acting? Please? I promise, it'll be great!"
Maia's mother pursed her lips, looking at the edge of the table. She just had to remind herself, repeatedly, not to yell in front of the company. She'd already made a bad enough impression! No need to add to it, right?
But, why did there have to be a talking fox at the table?

The question Maia's mother raised was a pretty important one. Going professional for acting was like going professional for sports. You'd need more talent in your finger than the average person possessed in their entire bodies, years of grueling training, and enough luck to find someone willing to give you your big break. Those were factors Isaac didn't really have on his side, and unless a miracle was on its way they were factors he would never have. There was also the little worry of appearance. What market was there for five foot tall babyfaces? School stage productions were one thing, but if he was going to go on stage, or even on the big screen, he had the feeling his look would never cut it. "For the time being, for fun. I'm still trying to figure out what I'm doing," he admitted, deciding to bring up the basic facts of the situation instead of any of his insecurities. At least he still had plenty of time left to make up his mind.
At Maia's words, Isaac returned her a warm smile. "If I've got you backing me up? I'm sure I can do anything," he said, a new confidence lining his voice. Blech, more sappy stuff! But Maia bringing out the best in Isaac was starting to become an indisputable fact. Would he have even made it half as long in this dinner if it wasn't for her sake? He was enjoying it, true, but it was still that mix of exhausting and odd that only a family dinner could properly capture.
Even Kuu was offering his own unique brand of encouragement, even if it also came at the cost of repeatedly banging himself against the table. There had to be an easier way for him to navigate than that, right? Maybe if he slowed down for once in his life, things'd be easier for him. But that was just how Kuu was, and just as he rushed into the table three times in a row he also rushed into plenty of eager questions and requests for Isaac. He couldn't help but chuckle a little at the fox's enthusiasm, even as Maia's mother returned to a somewhat tense stare. Digimon stuff was forbidden, true, but it wasn't like he could just ignore Kuu while he was being talked to. "Sure thing. But maybe later, okay?" he decided, diplomatically weaving around all the conversationalists at the table. "We've still got so much food to eat, after all. I don't want to hijack the table practicing." Now he wouldn't be ignoring Kuu, and Maia's mom hopefully wouldn't have to go off on a tangent about Digimon stuff. Win-win!

Hearing Maia and Isaac talking in a far-too-mushy way, Mr. Quinn cleared his throat, harshly, while throwing a glance to the boy. He wasn't going to reprimand his own daughter about it, but someone had to put these kids in their place! Maia's mother certainly wasn't going to, because she was too busy finding it absolutely adorable in every way possible.
Kuu seemed satisfied with his response, too, nodding rapidly. Of course, this was sounded with, 'thud, thud, thud!" has his face hit the table. "Happiness is painful!" He informed, before scuttling down the chair. With a compromise made, the Digimon went to sit at Dad's feet again. There was no way he was going to miss out on table scraps just to spend a little extra time with Isaac!
Maia's mother let out a heavy sigh as the fox disappeared again, and shook her head. "How do you even handle that thing?" Of course, Kuu was the 'thing' in question. That was still a pretty offensive term, but Mrs. Quinn was definitely unaware of it at this point. Or, she just didn't care. But, again, she was under some assumption that Kuu was a demon. What if it tried to possess Isaac, too? She couldn't have two children under demonic influence in the house! And, what would she tell the boy's mom? 'Oh, sorry, your son had dinner with us and my daughter's devil fox stole his soul. I hope there's no hard feelings'? That just wouldn't go over well!
"He's still not a thing," Maia pointed out, but was promptly ignored. After all, this opinion had been handed out almost every time that she said that! Why wouldn't her daughter come to her senses? In fact, Maia seemed to become progressively more irritated as she refused to acknowledge the beast as a being! Crazy child.
Mr. Quinn remained relatively silent throughout it, having voiced his opinion in private several times in the past. Instead, he sneaked a piece of chicken under the table, which was quickly devoured. Honey eyes shifted to Isaac, dully awaiting some sort of response. Maybe, the boy would find some way to talk sense into his wife. After all, she seemed to care the most about a stranger's opinion than her own family!

Somehow, Isaac knew it would come down to this. He shot Kuu a worried look when Maia's mom called him a thing, as if checking to see if he was okay. Even if he could be annoying sometimes, Isaac didn't want him to feeel bad! Unfortunately, as the rest of the family rested their eyes on him, it seemed that he would have to be the one who answered Maia's mom's question. Je made sure to thoroughly chew his food first, taking advantage of social etiquette to delay hia answer and come up with a plan of action. Why him?
Probably because by now, Maia and her dad have tried and failed many times.
He could only delay the inevitable for so long. Food was made to be swallowed, especially when it was this delicious. As soon as it was done he would be cast headfirst into the spotlight for one last time. After all, past this point, how many questions would even remain? He swallowed his food, swallowed his nerces, and prepared himself for the question he hoped would never come up all day.
"Same way as anyone else. Talking to him and getting to know him," he responded, putting a bit of subtle stress pn the first him. After all, Kuu was a being, not an it. "He can be a bit much at first. Or a lot much. But when you give him a chance, he has a way of growing on you." He spoke from his own experience, both as someone who grew to care more about Kuu and as someone who Maia's mother was growing to tolerate more. He never expected this kindness from her look of horror when she initially spotted the two of them! When it was a situation she approved of, Maia's mom seemed incredibly nice. He just wished she would give Kuu a chance with that kindness.
"Have you talked to him much?"

Meeting Isaac's look, Kuu sniffed the air, tilted his head, and twitched his ears simultaneously. In his own way, it was trying to say he was fine, with an added touch of 'look at all these things I can do at once, isn't it cool?' After all, it had been over a month of all of this happening, so he was pretty used to it! Plus, Maia always defended him when it came to being called a 'thing,' and her opinion was the only important one. Heck, if Maia agreed he was a thing, he'd take it. It was all about what she wanted, after all!
And, she didn't want Kuu called a thing or a demon. Sure, she called him a 'thing' a couple times in the past, but it was in a far more affectionate manner. Or, back when she had no idea what he was, and was clearly at wit's end with him. Given, Maia's mother didn't give Kuu many chances to prove that he was actually a semi-intelligent being, but it had already been explained repeatedly. It hadn't taken Maia this long to just accept the fact that Kuu was actually a living creature. With the fact that Kuu always defended against being a demon, on top of that, it made it more than a little difficult to tolerate.
From Mrs. Quinn's perspective, the most likely case had been that Isaac was possessed long ago. Maybe, even, before Maia had been. Was that how the demon got his grips on her? "I would rather not talk to it," she informed, grumpily.
Around this time, Kuu worked his way up the back of Maia's chair, looking to Isaac while his tamer picked at her food. "I don't really mind being called 'it' though," he notified, loudly. It was better than thing or demon! "Maia's the one that told me I'm a 'him.' Whatever works." Maia seemed entirely unphased by this, as she took a piece of food and stuffed it in the fox's mouth. Ah, good way to silence the creature.
Of course, this only made Mrs. Quinn's frown grow, as she stared at the fox. "She what?" Clearly, giving something else a gender just didn't make sense! "Get it away from the table, Maia! Your demon will shed on our food!" Well, that's a sentence that nobody expects to hear in their life!
"He doesn't shed. And I gave him a bath earlier. He's clean."
But, since Maia wasn't going to clarify on Kuu's prior statement, the fox with a mouthful of food had to! "When I hatched -- on your living room floor -- she called me a 'him'! So I took it." There was a pause to chew more, "I don't think I have a gender, otherwise. It's neat."
Maia's mother didn't seem to agree, as she slowly slid her chair away from the table, and rose to her feet. On her living room floor. He hatched. This was worse than she thought! "I think I left the oven on. I'll be back in a moment." And, with that, she scurried from the room.
Once out of earshot, Maia's father finally looked to Isaac, "she'll come to terms eventually. Hopefully, without dragging you further into it." That was probably the closest to an apology that Isaac was going to get!

That seemed fair. Oh, wait, no. It didn't. It seemed horribly, horribly unfair to just discount him outright. The initial shock and worry of having a creature as strange as Kuu around was one thing, but not giving him a chance when Maia's mom was the only one with a problem seemed strange. He figured at some point, she would've at least considered giving Kuu a chance after both Maia and her father regularly interacted with him. Now what was a nice family dinner was becoming a huge debate about demons, with Maia's mother suddenly taking way more issue with Kuu's presence at the table than she did previously.
And then the hatching was mentioned. Demons didn't come from eggs (per Elliot's expertise, they arose from the Twisting Nether), but that didn't seem to be much consolation to Maia's mother. In fact, it seemed to make her feel even worse, if the big frown on her face and the hasty exit from the room was any indication. At least said hasty exit would give everyone involved a break from more questions about Digimon.
Maybe it was silly, but the sudden 180 in atmosphere left Isaac really disappointed. Today was starting to feel normal. In fact, considering what Isaac's family had defined as normal, it was far better than that. He never forgot how harsh Maia's mom was to her daughter, but for a second he was at least allowed to immerse himself into something warmer. Now the reality of the situation had bubbled back to the surface, and Isaac was left with some of the wind taken out of his sails. He sighed sadly, returning most of his focus to eating instead of thinking about all of this.
At least Maia's dad had tried to comfort him, if even just a little. "I'm sorry I couldn't do more to help," Isaac remarked in response, voice more glum than it was prior. Maybe it was silly of him to feel responsible for this, but he couldn't help it.
