An offer she can refuse [Katherine/Yume]

It didn’t so much as occur to Yume the possiblity that Katherine would be distracted at the moment when she took off after the small squad of digimon with Cloudy and Toy. She passed right through a very confused king Mamemon and a shocked audience, then crossed the courtins after “The Bandits”. With Cloudy in her hands and Toy just barely keeping up behind her, Yume nearly missed as the last member of the fugitives passed through the door from the backstage to a much more lit location.
“You aren’t gonna get away that easy!” Yume declared. She wasn’t sure what came over her, but she liked this feeling. It was like dreaming, but she was still awake. It was tiring but a little…liberating? Some of the digimon on the backstage seemed inclined to stop her, but one glare from Toy and they backed away. Right as the last dims of light were being squashed by the closing door, Yume’s fingers slid through the crack and pulled it open again. Once again, Yume found herself the center of attention, this time that of several warumonzaemon in cook’s hats. One of them had his arms crossed with his arms turned to an open door. From the placement of his body, it was clear he was previously facing the five escaping digimon who one by one took off at the sight of Yume.
“First those five then-“
“We haven’t had a fight this bad in a while.”
“Should we do something about it?”
Yume didn’t have the time to stay and listen. She was gonna capture those running digimon and return Katherine’s digivice to her! Cloudy had the pleasure of tasting several different soups as she hit the pots while Yume attempted to sprint in between the warumonzaemon, with the last one suddenly turning to face Yume.
“Miss human, what do you think you’re doing? This is MY kitchen and I’m not going to have this.” The warumonzaemon’s claws grappled Yume’s wrist. As she struggled in vain to get out the door, her gaze met the escaping digimon, getting farther and farther away. Yume tried even harder, but the large black, meanie digimon just wouldn’t budge. Was she gonna loose this chance and so utterly disappoint Katherine? She just met her, and already things were going down the usual path. Even with Toy help and Cloudy’s… moral support… was she just such a burden even in this world?
“Let me go! Please you have to let me go, Jazz took something from my friend, and they are jazz followers! Please, they’re bandits, they even admitted to it!” The grip seemed to loosen just a bit.
“Jazz followers? Miss human, I think there was mis-“
There was a popping sound, and finally Yume found enough room to free her arm. She pushed it against the Warumonzaemon’s belly, for some reason she thought she heard a squish toy sound when she did, but it didn’t matter, she had to get that bearmon, that gatomon, that dondokomon and those petitmamon!
One of the bandits, a gatomon, just barely managed to overhear what Yume said about them.
“Wait guys! I don’t think she knows about that thing after all.” The gatomon stopped in her tracks and turned around to Yume. One by one, the other band members did too. “I think there was some kind of misunderstanding about our band. We’re already looking pretty bad just by running to begin with, I think we should go back and explain ourselves. Maybe they’ll give us another chance to perform.”
Just as she finished saying this, having managed to finally evade the warumonzaemon after catching up with Yume, Toy popped out from behind her to the front. With one gaze into his eerie eye, every fur thread on the gatomon’s champion body shivered, not to mention the loud reactions of the other members of the band.
“Forget what I said, and run away!” The last thing they saw, before trying to escape again, was the big strong warumonzaemon popping some bubble from Cloudy’s nose, and falling to the side after getting pushed by a tiny human girl. Suddenly, this was not just a joke or just an escape attempt: This was a flee for survival!
“Cat Laser!”
“Petit Curse!”
“Random Drum Rush!”
Blasts and shockwaves and tiny curses flew from the “Bandits” in the human girl’s direction. There was a very small, quick to dissipate cloud of smoke, but the group didn’t stay long enough to watch the results. Their path now was a slightly zig-zagging “ramp” up the town, where the walls were the huts and semi-constructed metallic or fully-constructed stone houses all small and cramped on each other. For cover they would have their own attacks and the dust of the sandy road. Without hesitation they took off, occasionally turning here and there.
“They’re still after us, I know they are!” Bearmon stated. He turned around. “Bear claw!”
The digimon slammed his claws into the ground rapidly, forming a cloud of smoke behind the group to hopefully thwart the chasers. Then he turned around and sprinted to catch up to the rest of them.
“Good idea, Bearmon!” Gatomon stated. After a bit more running, she quickly turned around, raising a paw. “You guys hide in that alley. Neeekooooo PUNCH!”
Much like bearmon before her, gatomon slammed her paw into the ground, followed by her other paw, each one pulling out and back in at lightning speeds forming a thick cloud of dust and sand. Surely, their chasers could find them now. Yet, when they least expected, they heard a meowing, and someone fell to the ground. Shooting sound and pockets of air erupted from the cloud, followed by a clink noise and a flying holy ring that slammed into a nearby wall. There was another meowing and dropping to the ground. Then something getting dragged through the sand towards the band.
The first thing to emerge out of the settling dust cloud was a large blue cannon, which turned out to be a gun barrel as the body it was attached to exposed it self. It was none other than Revolvement with one hand dragging a ringless gatomon through the ground and the other hand holding a revolver to her head.
“Hello there fellas. I’m sure you lot is of the smart kind, the kind that can tell a robbery when they see one. So do me a favor and hand over all the valuables, unless you want the little kitty over here to get hurt of course.” The band froze in place. They had never intended for this to happen. Why was this happening to them? They just wanted to get away from those scary things! They were turning a new leaf today! Why, why, why, why, why, why, why?
“You can’t take her, give her back!” One of the petitmamon’s demanded. “You-“
“Justice Bullet!” In a single moment, a giant bullet reached the petimamon, sending him crashing all the way to the nearest wall behind him. Not that far, considering they were in a deadend alley, but still the amount of rubble that flew out of where the tiny digimon crashed should suffice to demonstrate how painful this was. “Heh, got anything else to say, eh? No? Good, then pass over the goods, I need to bring them to boss on Jazz’s cave so-”
“Actually, we DO have something to say!” A voice now a little familiar to the group said, interrupting the pistol digimon. His eyes widened as he seemed to recognize the voice too, and he turned just in time to spot a certain red eye right on his face.
“Delivery Service!” A box of office supplies appeared in Toy’s hands and crashed into the Revolvemon, who nearly passed out.
"AAAAAAAH, Spare me, please!” The gun digimon dropped his guns. “I’ll do anything.”
Yume practically shoved her face into the digimon’s. This gesture was too much for the frightened digimon.
“Take us to Jazz then. I heard you mentioning her name.”
With that, Revolvemon fell on his back, knocked out.
After tying up the robber and getting some corks from the kitchen, paying them with a huge apology, Yume and her crew managed to sit down and have a talk with the “bandits”. The misunderstanding was cleared up and Yume even revealed she managed to track them down after losing them by following the dust clouds they made, which were visible even several buildings away. In the meantime, Yume had also realized Katherine wasn’t with her. When she came back, Katherine wasn’t here either, but someone saw her heading for some cave. Could it be? They put the corks on the Revolvemon, who would soon wake up to a group of rather upset jazz players and a twin digimon tamer, the latter of which repeated her demand that Revolvemon take her to Jazz. At first Revolvemon refused, but with the combined effort of Toy and a couple warumonzaemon, at last the robber digimon agreed to take them there.
Still, when they finally did arrive, it was a little hard to believe.
“A bunny door?” Toy questioned. The garurumon cave checked out. “This big baddie uses a bunny door?”
“Big baddie? Hah! She ain’t nothing compared to my boss, Fugamon. That’s why I didn’t want to come here. She is just a bunny picking up trash for him. And when she occasionally finds a dropped jewel, it’s time to pay up. I don’t recommend you go up against the boss. Even if you’re scary, the boss is super scary too. Those warumonzaemon stayed behind to take care of the mess you all made, right? Just go help them instead. Why do you need to go help this friend you barely know?”
So, this Jazz person wasn’t really bad? Aaah, now Yume’s head hurt! This was annoying. Fine, whatever, she just needed to get that digivice back, right? For Katherine’s dream.
She grabbed her own digivice.
“Open the door.” Yume commanded. Suddenly there was some kind of really sound sound and an unbelievable scream for someone to run. Yume’s eyes widened just slightly and she turned to the revolvemon. “Open it quick!”
The revolvemon did as he was told, helping Yume to open the door. However, as soon as she, Cloudy and Toy had passed, the Revolvemon said his parting words.
“Fairwell losers! I’m dead if I stay here but you enjoy buying me time to not get pummeled!” With that, he closed the door up again.
“What do we do Yume? Should we try to open it?”
Yume shook her head.
“No. We came here to get Katherine’s digivice back, and we’re doing that now. Besides, if I start hearing those screams in my head it’ll be really hard to nap.”
It honestly hurt a lot already. Yume wanted to sleep. She was practically asleep. But her heart was pumping. She felt like she could fall down at any moment, but she felt just as much that she could dodge a bullet if she got startled now. She didn’t want that hard rock and deep caves and exciting adventure, she wanted a comfy blanket, some warm milk and a teddy bear to hug as she fell asleep. Either way, the only way to get anything would be through this, as fast as she could slog through it.
“Lets go.” She began climbing down towards where she heard the sounds, digivice in hand and ready for use. Every step was hard, every step reminded her of those words. “enjoy buying me time to not get pummeled”, “she is just a bunny collecting trash”, “should we try to open it”… “why would you need to go help this friend you barely know?”. Why would she not turn around? Why did she not turn on her tail and flee back at the waterfalls too? “It’s like a dream you know. The digital world. Like a nightmare too. I think… as a dream… everyone should get a chance to try it out. So Toy, Cloudy…”
Yume reached the bottom, and was now staring at this huge ogre creature at the middle of this huge hall with lots of “trash” all around and signs of a small battle over the floor and a more decorated chair to a corner. This person was probably the one Revolvemon considered his “boss”. Indeed, the ogre looked pretty menacing. But where was Jazz, and the psychemons and Katherine? Where they not here after all? Once again, Yume held her digivice tight. Then, she gulped.
“… Please help me make sure that Katherine gets her chance at that dream you’ve been showing me.”
