Place: Titan Building – Downtown Shibuya
Katherine tilted her head slowly sitting on her bed with legs crossed, while she took a sip of her mug full of coffee. Just a regular off-school morning for the girl, as she checked her email and the local news in different websites. Final exams for the period were about to start next week, so she had a couple of days off before they did. At least it would be a regular off-school morning wouldn’t it be for that weird email she had just read. And well, of course, because of the cute little bunny standing on the bed just next to her, also reading the email. Or at least trying to read it; somehow she knew Japanese, and that was something Katherine discovered upon coming back to the real world two weeks ago. Nevertheless, she did have trouble remembering some words or reading it, apparently, just by being a digimon, all sort of languages and data were already on her core memory. That was truly fascinating for Katherine, as she couldn’t help but think what else could Jazz had information of stored in her brain. Ancient world history? Code programming? Cooking recipes?
Far from being just a digital entity storing information, Jazz was a Lopmon, a Digital Monster (digimon) that had come with her to the real world as the result of a two-month trip around the Digital World, a place full of all kind of digimon and marvelous places, where Katherine had embarked after having a weird inexplicable vision in her dreams. There, she met Jazz who became her digimon partner, her ally and her best friend. Looking for explanations, they began the quest to reunite the Zoid Gems, 5 ancient gems that belonged to an old sage that had disappeared years ago after losing them. The legend stated that if they managed to reunite the five gems and take them to an ancient place known as the ‘Drum Sanctuary’ they could bring back this sage, who could explain to them the reason why Katherine was chosen, why did she have that weird vision, and what did it mean. After her little adventure, they had gathered 3 gems that were literally inside her backpack right then. She already knew where the other two were, one was apparently at Terminus City, a city inside the Digital World, being held by ‘The Dark Soldier’ a powerful digimon. The other one… well, that’s why Katherine was back. After a pretty dangerous adventure in Server Woods, Void, another powerful digimon, had been able to open a portal to the real world, using the gem, and had escaped into it, forcing Katherine to follow and go back to the real world. So far, there were no signs of Void, and she was really clueless about where he might be, even beginning to doubt he was even in Japan.
-A… party?–Jazz’s voice made Katherine stop her train of thought and go back to the odd situation at hand –Sound fun… where’s that ‘Titan Building’?
–It’s on the southern part of the city –Katherine kept staring at the screen. -It’s not ‘fun’, it’s… weird. Why would these people invite me to this party if they don’t even know me? –The girl frowned –Plus, let me bring a guest and everything…? I’ve never had anything to do with Titanic Company, I haven’t even been in the building to start with.
-Are they important?
-They are. They’re a huge cyber security company that makes millions of dollars creating anti-virus and all sort of protection networks for other companies, banks, and even governments worldwide. –The girl explained.
-Wow… Kath… -Jazz paused for a second. –You must be very important, then.
-Jazz added confidently, as more often than not: completely missing the point.
-I’m not! –Katherine said with a rather angry face. –That’s the whole point, it doesn’t make sense. –The girl made a pause to think. –Okay, see? This is stupid, this mail is not even protected, it might as well be a prank. I’m going to look for their number on the internet and make a call to Titanic Company.
-Hello? Titatic Company custom call service, how can I help you? –A soft voice picked up the phone
-Yes, good morning, Mrs. I would like to confirm my assistance to the… -The girl read the name as it appeared on the screen. – ‘Great C.U.T.E People Party’ –She said, expecting the lady that had picked up to tell her such thing didn’t exist.
-Oh, of course, we have created a department regarding that party, let me pass your call to them. –The girl replied kindly.
-What the…? –Katherine mumbled. So it wasn’t a prank?
-Good morning, this is the Great C.U.T.E People Party custom service department, if you’re a guest, a member of the staff being a musician, chef, bartender or any other or any form of journalist interested in covering the party you’re on the right place. How may I help you? –Another voice picked up.
-Uuuuhhh… Yes! Ummm… -Katherine was stumbling on her own words, she didn’t expect this to be so serious. –Y-yes! I would like to confirm my assistance to the party… just… see if my name is on the list. –Okay so even if the party was real, this didn’t mean the mail wasn’t a prank, after all, why would she be invited?
-Yes, of course, state your name please. –The girl asked politely.
-Okay… one moment please… -The girl could be heard typing in a computer from the phone. After some seconds she broke the silence. –Yes, Mrs. Jasso, you're in fact on our list. We’ll be glad to have you this Friday, remember to dress formal and that you can bring a guest. You just need to print the invitation you got via email and show it at the entrance. –Katherine remained silent for some seconds, completely stunned. Was she invited? But … why? She thought about asking the lady but decided it would seem too suspicious.
-T-thanks! I’ll be there! –She said, hanging up the phone.
-So… you’re actually invited, huh? –Jazz said as they had breakfast on the kitchen table, why Katherine was still looking at the email in her laptop, resting above the table. They were eating some egg sandwiches Katherine had made. It was pretty easy having Jazz around the house since Katherine’s parents were almost never around.
-Apparently… yes, I am. –It was clear this was a very odd situation, and from her experience in the Digital World, odd situations meant there was some digimon involved.
-So, any idea on what to do now? –The bunny took another bite at her sandwich.
-Well, since this is not even protected by the remittent, I can actually look at the list of people they sent this email to. I suppose they must be important people but… -The girl started browsing through the list of guests, to her surprise, even though she couldn’t recognize if there were any important names on it since she didn’t know much about the big sharks of business around Japan, she could recognize 3 names. Not because they were important businessmen but because… they were three other tamers she already knew! ‘Miyu Feng’, ‘Kazuya Oda’ and most importantly ‘Talia Brandt’ were all names on the list. The girl stood up promptly from her chair, walked to her bedroom, and started looking through her backpack.
-Where is it? Where is it?–The girl said as she browsed through her stuff.
-Huh? What are you looking for? –Jazz asked, entering the room and holding half of her sandwich in one hand and half of Katherine’s sandwich in the other one. –Can I eat your sandwich? –She added.
-There you are! –The girl said, taking a small card out of her bag. Talia had given her her card the last time she saw her in the real world, which, to be fair, was also the one time they met. She was a beautiful girl with a big heart and two great digimon twins, who had helped Katherine take the decision to go to the Digital World and look for her partner. Talia had also helped to cover Katherine’s disappearance in front of her parents and classmates, even though, after arriving, she discovered time flowed differently in the human world, so she wasn’t away for as long as she thought, only around a week.
-Come on, pick up, pick up, pick up –The girl mumbled as she held her cell phone against her ear and crossed her fingers for Talia to pick up. Once (if) she did, she would ask her about the email, and then ask her where they could meet to talk better about this. Of course, the last time Katherine saw Talia, she was in the Digital World, so there was no reason for her to think that she would currently be in the human world right now.
