Caught in the Storm (John, Spire, Leith)

Post by Leith, Veemon, and Shoutmon on Jan 5, 2019 17:10:14 GMT
Leith felt extremely conflicted about Owen sitting down to comfort him. On one hand he recognized the good intent and took that to heart, but the other side of that coin was that the young man was making enough of a scene to make somebody else think they had to go out of their way, something for which he felt a little guilty. Was he worried about the weather? "You're perceptive." That was the young man's go at self-deprecating humor, his preferred coping mechanism, since it wasn't hard to guess by the everything about him. He had to speak up to make himself heard over the thunder and wind. "We actually got these storms season like clockwork where I'm from. The main threat isn't actually wind, though that does still matter. It's flooding, and Whitewater is still a coastal city." The tears of fear the young man had to wipe with his shirt didn't exactly reduce that threat. "God, I'd kill for one of those digiports right about now. It's definitely too dangerous to try and fly, swim, or ride out of here." Flamedramon frowned.
Meanwhile, Shoutmon was still fuming a little as Bezil approached him. "Never seen him before. Never gonna see him again either if he knows what's good for 'im." One last huff out the nose, though, and he seemed to be in control of himself. "No one talks about Leith like he did, 'specially not in front of 'im." Before Shoutmon could go on listing the Gumdramon's no doubt innumerable crimes, one loud crack of lightning got his two partners to flinch and cover their ears, something lots of others in the arcade seemed to mimic. Shoutmon was hardly so susceptible to noise given his nature, but even he perked up and glanced outside. "That's not good."
The power went out. Leith gasped and scrambled to his feet, helped there silently by Flamedramon. At least the inside was less noisy after that, ironically helping Leith, but it also meant the hurricane's effect had reached him in a sense. "Leith, don't look out there," Flamedramon advised the Tamer as he turned the boy away from the sight of trees being tossed like leaves, a sort of gentle force backing up his suggestion.

"I've been told that before" Owen replied to Leith, giving a small half-smile. That faded at the mention of flooding. "Hmm. Hopefully this place is high enough above ground" Owen said, frowning. Leith then mentioned a digiport. Owen thought that would be a very useful thing to have here right now too, but, alas, they did not.
Bezil meanwhile blinked as Shoutmon explained that this conflict seemed to appear right out of the blue, and that the red drake seemed to have a loyalty to his partner as fierce as Bezil's could be for his dad. Then lightning flashed and thunder boomed. "Not good at all" Bezil agreed after flinching.
The hurricane was beginning to make itself noted in the arcade. Even Owen and Bezil were beginning to get a little nervous. Owen reached into his tunic and took out what appeared to be a snack bar of some kind - it was actually an emergency ration that he had prepared just in case - a high energy snack that would quickly replenish his digivolution energy if needed. As he had somewhat exhausted himself earlier by evolving to Mega to warn people to take shelter, it would probably be necessary if he was to evolve again.
Then the power failed. This sure made everyone take notice. "It'll be okay, everyone, don't worry!" Bezil tried to reassure everyone. "Just stay away from the windows!" That was all he could come up with that would help at this stage. Wanting some reassurance, he walked over to Owen, who was also standing. With Flamedramon looking after Leith, hopefully the human would be okay. "Dad... do you know what to do here?" he asked the Gaomon, trying not to sound scared, but it showed on his face, his ears folded back and his head lowered.
"There's not much we can do, mate" Owen replied, patting his shoulder. "We can't fight a hurricane, so we just bunker down best we can, make sure everyone's alright and not panicking". Then he had an idea. "Sandbags! Do we have those?" he asked, hoping someone would be in the know here. They would be able to stop water entering if it came to it, but... had Whitewater prepared for this properly?

Sandbags, yes sandbags were a great idea, but where were they supposed to get sand from? The Arcade probably had some trashbags they could fill with sand, but they had no sand. "Well, if you have any idea where to get any sand from, we could build a barricade. Better idea is probably to look for a higher place to get to. The storm is not about to stop soon and its not like we have much light." while they had been talking, Sheppard had scavanged through the Arcade, looking for usefull stuff. Softdrinks and snacks were available in abundance and he had even found a bag of candles, a box of matches, a flashlight and some batteries.
"I found some stuff to get light, so we can see something in the night." Sheppard happily explained, yes the night. Once it would get dark, the situation would get even worse and sitting in the dark with water flooding this place was not a nice prospect. Sheppard now light a few candles, since the storm had blacked out so much light, that it was almost like nighttime. Sheppard then waddled to the door, opened it for a moment, the wholing and splashing of the storm shaking John to the bones. A second later Sheppard closed the door again, completely sooked and explained. "The waterlevel is rising, we should do something about it."

First the power, now flooding? Great... Justice turned on the flashlight on his phone to see if everyone's alright. The only thing he saw the Flamdramon shielding the one called Leith from the window. Gummy rolled his eyes at them and then looked back at Justice, who only shrugged his shoulder in response. This isn't what Justice needed at the moment. He had bought a Digi-Port with some of the Bit currency he got from a previous mission. He uncuffed his sleeve, revealing his D-Watch and started to surf through it until he found the Digi-Port. With just a push of a button, he could be zapped away from this predicament and back home. He didn't wanted to be involved in this mess in the first place.
Before he could active the Digi-port, he finger froze just as he was about to tap on his D-Watch. Sure he wanted to back home, but was he really about to leave a bunch of people to fend themselves in this hurricane? He sighed, "Ah fuck." He sheave his watch away. There was talk among the group about using sandbags for the inevitable flood. He approached them to add his two cents.
"Trash bags are a good start. All we have to do is fill them with the heaviest most conforming substance this place has; like wet comforters, towels, sheets; anything that's a good water absorber. I'll check the back closet to see if they're any bags of soil or potting mix, because they're pretty much sandbags basically."
With that said, Justice went into the hallway, "I'll be right back you two." Veemon nodded as the two watch their partner disappear into the darkness. The blue Digimon stood on a table to get everyone's attention.
"All right everyone, let's get mosy. Everyone has to do their part if we want to see clear skies again." he said, giving an optimistic smile. No storm was gonna bring down his mood since Justice was usually the man with the plan.
Gummy meanwhile, went to sit next to an arcade machine, looking at the crowd with a grumpy expression. 'Who the hell does that Shoutmon thinks he's talking to?' he thought to himself. 'I'll lay his ass flat before he even sees it coming.' Among the crowd, there was another Gumdramon there, slightly surprising, as he had never seen another one of his kind before. He quickly looked away before he noticed him, not knowing how to approach him.

Well as much as Leith didn't want to be looked at like a problem to be solved, he very much appreciated Owen's company. Heck, he was almost tempted to reach out and pet the dog if they weren't all interrupted by more serious, immediate needs like rising waters outside that might not be outside for long.
While Flamedramon tried to keep the young man as calm as he could, Shoutmon observed Owen's and Bezil's take-charge mentalities, John's and Shepard's unaffected optimism, and Justice and Veemon's improvisation with a little smile that gave him the sense that there wasn't really anything to worry about (barring failure in follow-through, of course). The example was set for Shoutmon, then. "Looks like I'm stuck with you people," Shoutmon mused, stretching out his arms in order to crack his knuckles, "But it beats swimmin'. Guess I'll make myself not-useless." The drake was mostly speaking to himself, but he was making no effort to lower his voice either. Following his own declaration, Shoutmon, the one of the trio least likely to feel like anything was off limits to him, used, "Stand Smash!" to knock in a locked supply closet for Justice, where he found what he was after: empty trash bags. On his way there, though, he had to pass Gumdramon, who he eyed with some hostility on his way past. Figures the one with the lbiggest mouth sits down first, he hissed in his own mind. "Damnit, Gunny, keep the damn door shut!" he scolded Shepard, apparently very unafraid of the scaled, armed puppy.
Following the others' example, Leith started to walk away, too. "Where're you going?"
"I dunno... look for something productive to do I guess. Anything- anything beats- beats this." Leith's chest was still heaving, breathing pattern irregular, and that was what stunted his speech. "Maybe see if there's a- there's- there's a back- backup generator or s-something."
"I'll come with you," Flamedramon volunteered. So that pair, too, joined the search for anything potentially useful. Shoutmon attacked a helpless, innocent door with Stand Smash. -Stand Smash: This digimon uses his microphone stand like a blunt weapon and beats the opponent with it to deal blunt force damage.

While Owen would have enjoyed the petting if it happened, sadly the crisis at hand prevented him from prompting it.
Later on, Owen mainly realized this after he had said it. Yeah... it was probably too late to prepare sandbags here. This was something that should've been done hours ago, but, alas, the warning seemed to be so sudden, and Whitewater as a whole seemed to be woefully unprepared for the storm. People were still playing on the arcade machines as they arrived for crying out loud!
The Gaomon turned to John. "It'd be too risky going outside now. The wind would be knocking up debris and flinging it around like bullets, we've gotta stay in here..."
But a flooding? If the sea came in? The water could wash the whole building away if it wasn't strong enough to withstand it. And frankly, thankfully the power was out, because electricity in the water would only make things so much worse. Owen took a few breaths to calm himself. If he started panicking, what would that do for the rest of them?
As Sheppard found lighting material, Owen and Bezil thought they might say something too. "Uh... not that it might amount to much, but, I can make a fire on my tail" the Gumdramon said.
"And I can armor digivolve to a form that can create light too" Owen added, hoping that could help matters. Indeed, once the sun set and if the hurricane was still upon them, experiencing this disaster in darkness would be utterly horrifying for everyone.
Garbage bags were a good thing too. "Yes, they're waterproof, they should help" Owen agreed with the human that suggested it.
"I'll look for stuff!" Bezil said, brightly. He even had an idea too. "If we don't, we could fill the garbage bags with water and use them! They'd still be able to be used for that, right?!"
Owen patted his son's head, that was something he hadn't thought of. Yes, a waterproof garbage bag filled with water could be used to block a torrent coming in. Bezil grinned and was about to rush off to find such bags, but saw the human rush off first, Shoutmon then opening the closet for him. The furred Gumdramon halted, blinked, then looked around for how else he could be useful, then saw another Gumdramon by an arcade machine. He remembered this was that human's partner.
Thinking that the smaller Gumdramon might be a little nervous about the events, and because of a little curiosity rising because he had never met another digimon like him, Bezil approached him. "Hey, mate, everything alright here?" he asked, wondering if he could help here.
Owen meanwhile was rushing around the arcade with others, both looking for tools they could use to keep the water out as well as trying to keep morale up. Still, he had to snap in exasperation. "NO! Don't try and put bloody paper in as ballast, it's worthless!" he snapped at a trio of digimon that were filling a bag with losing tickets, receipts and coupons. He emptied out their bag and promptly refilled it with dirt from a pot plant. "There! Do that, okay?!" he instructed them, before looking out for other ways he can help the situation.

Filling the garbage bags with the earth from plant pots was a good idea. But they were in a arcade, not a home appliance store, so the amount of potted plants and earth they had was limited. But whatever, Sheppard had already started to gather any flower pot he could find, no matter how small. A few larger pots and a handful of flowerpots, together they dumped the earth into half a dozen bags and then Sheppard used his sharp claws to shred plants faster than most would have expected from him. With this living garden shredder, they got enough enough wood flour and small wood pieces to fill another three bags. Well, not much, but they lined up what bags they had, to build a small barrier at the door, just bearly one foot high and probably not strong enough to really withstand anything. "Its a start, but we really need more stuff to fill bags, so these won't just get washed away." John commented, hoping that the others might find something else to put into the bags. He could have Sheppard start shredding every table, chair and maybe even game machine. But he had just payed of the dept from the animal food his partner once stole from a zoo and he was certain that replacing the furniture and machines would be far, far more expansive.

Shining a light at the closet, Justice placed his hand on the doorknob to open the door. To be expected, the door was locked. Figures. This place is business after all, so keeping security to certain places was understandable. He took out a bobby pin from his pocket, ready to pick the door lock. Before he could act, the Shoutmon from earlier used his microphone to knock the door open.
"Well, I guess that's one way to get in quick," he commented, looking at the dragon Digimon with a smile, "Thanks, man. I'm Justice by the way."
As he expected, there were rolls of trash bags here. There was duck tape in there, which they could use if they ever need to patch additional bags. Justice started to wonder if there was a kitchen in the building somewhere. If there was, then he could gather baking stuff like sugar, flour, and salt for the others to help if they ran out of soft materials. But he'll need an extra hand to get all the materials in a fast pace.
"Hey, do you wanna come with me to see if there's a kitchen in this building," he asked the Shoutmon in a cautious tone, "If there's stuff like sugar, flour, salt, we can use them to fill up the bags." He didn't know if he held any animosity towards him for what Gummy did earlier, so he was prepared for a "Hell no" for a response.
Watching the Commandramon and his human fill up bags, Vee was a little bit in awe on how many they were doing in rapid succession. At the rate they were heading, the entrance to the arcade would be barricade up in no time. "Alright time to help that barricade." Vee bolstered." Just as he was gonna help fill more bags, he stopped to see a shaken duo of In-Training Digimon. They were frightened of the storm it seemed.
"Hey there. don't worry, it's gonna be ok." he said as he cradled the two of them in his arms. He made silly faces as he tried to calm them down. To his surprise it worked as they started to laugh. He became wide-eyed at a sudden realization. "Aaaaand just like that, I'm a dad."
Gummy opened one eye, and then both at the Gumdramon who was standing besides him. He looked like a taller, more fluffier version of him with an accent. He looked down to his tail, which was still radiating embers from earlier.
He opened and closed his mouth a few times. "N-Nothing that's anything of your concern." he said brashly, looking away from him.

Bezil overheard John then spoke his mind. "If we can't find things other than dirt and sand, we could fill them up with water" he repeated. "It won't be as effective as sand, but, if we find something to support the water bags, that should hold the flow, right dad?" he turned to ask his father.
"That's the gist of it" Owen said, nodding. "Water filled bags can't halt the flow if it gets too high though, we have to move quickly here!"
As Bezil met the other Gumdramon, he seemed to brush him off. Shrugging, Bezil ignored him and proceeded with the emergency situation.
Owen and Bezil would thus attempt to do what they could. They rushed to the bathroom with about 10 garbage bags. From there, Bezil would proceed to fill them with water from the tap, then tie them up. Owen would then rush to bring the water-filled bags to the front door, hoping to add them to the pile of those available. On their own, the water bags would probably not suffice, but mixed with the dirt-filled bags, they could probably hold things up.
When there were no more bags, Owen had to take a seat, panting from the effort. Bezil did the same, stopping next to Veemon, who had made the speech that seemed to rouse everyone into action in the first place. "Do you think we did okay?" the furred Gumdramon asked him.

Thankfully they were no longer the only ones building up the barricade and in no time, the wall of bags filled with either dirt or water were pilled up, blocking the entrance to Arcade. Well, if this wouldn't hold the building probably wouldn't either, so not much more they could do. Shepard peacked over the barricade again, the raining and storm outside was still as strong as before and the waterlevel was still rising. The digimon just shrugged, there was nothing else they could do, some he returned to his slavaged candles and lights and lit a few, since nighttime was now quickly approaching. John could feel how sleepiness slowly started to build up in his body and he could swear, that he would probably be sick soon. He stretched and yawned, before he sat down next to his partner, keeping what food they had out of the all devouring dragons reach. But they still had to do something before they could at least relax a little, so after a minute of sitting down, he jumped up again and explained. "We need to arrange something so we can sleep safely, even if water comes in. Also we should probably do guard shifts, in case it gets even worse or something bad happens."

Vee sat down on one of the chairs making sure that the two In-Training Digimon were ok. Since everyone just about finished with making the barricade for the front entrance, there was really nothing more he could do. He perked his eyes up to see the other Gumdramon from earlier taking a seat right next to him, asking him if they did all they could.
"Yup! From the look of things we've done a great job with all the things that are in this place!" he said cheerfully, putting one of the Digimon on his lap so he has a free arm. He ushered his fist in front of the Digimon so that they could fist bump; a sign of comradery for a job well done. "I'm Vee by the way. Nice to meet cha! You know, you look just like brother, but more taller and more fluffier. And not a total dingle to add on the list as well."
He then recalled that while he found the two Digimon scared of the storm, the two were over there talking about something. But probably in Gummy fashion, he brushed him off. Typical. He turned to his brother, who was laying down leaning against the machine now, keeping a fire lit on his tail. He always liked playing hard to get sometimes when he meets new people, or another Gumdramon for that manner.
He sighed."Yeaaaaah. My brother over there may seem cold, and even on occasions hostile, but deep down he has a warmer and friendly side when he gets used to people. In fact, I think he just really wants to talk to you, but can't find the words to say anything nice. Right now, he's just a little upset over what happened earlier with that Shoutmon. I'm pretty sure you know what happened already, huh?

Finally, Leith and Flamedramon returned from out of sight. Leith was still breathing hard, but the good news was it seemed to be more because of physical exertion than mental stress. Unfortunately, not all the news was good. "We didn't find anything," he moaned, "So I guess we're stuck in the darkness. No, the irony of a metalhead unhappy about the darkness is not lost on me."
Shoutmon returned empty-handed, too, soon after. "I think J's still lookin' around, but I don't know how much food he thinks he's gonna find in a damn arcade."
"Which means..." As Flamedramon glanced outside, even he was starting to get nervous. He couldn't let it show beyond frown on his face, though. He had to be strong for his Tamer. "...I think we did everything we could."
"Someone, help me keep my head busy? Please?" Leith took a seat on an arcade game that had a flat surface with controls in front of its screen, not the most comfortable place but the closest one to take a load off.
Flamedramon gave that task a moment of thought but Shoutmon spoke up first. "Anyone down for spin the bottle?"
"Literally anything else."
"But you're distracted now, ain'tcha?"
"OK, yeah, but we're still not doing that."
"Maybe a game to pass the time is the way to go, though," Flamedramon half-agreed, trying to stand in the middle of the group in order to speak to all of them. "Why not a simple card game like Go Fish or Five Card Draw? You have a deck, don't you Leith?" It was true. In a world with none of his favored games or consoles, the young man had to find new ways to entertain himself, and that was one. A deck was always close at hand in his Infiniti-store now.

The human raised a good point. True, they didn't want to all sleep and then roll over to find themselves underwater. "That's a good point. I'd volunteer for the-" his words were broken off by a huge yawn, where he realized just how tired he was.
"I volunteer" Bezil immediately said, surprising Owen. "You're exhausted, dad, you need to rest" the Gumdramon explained. Meanwhile Bezil was wide awake and willing to do his bit.
"Well... alright, if you think you can handle it, mate, you can do the first shift" Owen said, smiling. "No more than 4 hours though, alright? Once that's done, wake up someone else to take over for you".
Later on when Bezil sat down, the Veemon seemed to be quite friendly. The furred Gumdramon smiled and bumped his fist back when prompted. "My name's Bezil, nice to meet you too" he said. "Ah, he's your brother?" he looked over at the other Gumdramon. He didn't know about the 'dingle' part yet, just that he seemed a little standoffish, but, he wouldn't mind talking to him later on if he was still awake while Bezil was on watch.
Then Vee explained that he seemed to have trouble initiating conversation with others. Bezil nodded in understanding, he had encountered a few others like that. But still though, now that he knew there wasn't any real animosity, he thought it might be good to at least have a go.
"Alright. Thanks for letting me know, I'll go and talk to him" Bezil said, standing up and walking over to the other Gumdramon. Bezil wondered what to say, then noticed that the other Gumdramon's tail was alight. "Hey there, I see you can light your tail too? That's pretty cool" he offered as an opening.
Owen meanwhile liked the idea that Flamedramon came up with. Spin-the-bottle probably wouldn't be something he'd be comfortable with, given he was about to get married, but cards sounded like fun. "Alright, let's do it" the Gaomon said, giving a smile. "Back in my soldier days we had card games to get us through the waiting periods"

Even if they had a Night Guard, John Mitchell still wanted to make themself somewhat confortable and safe from water coming in. So they split for a moment, Mitchell going back to raiding the place for blankets and pillows, while John pushed sas many tables to gether as he could, so they would have an elevated sleeping place. While he now tried to fixate the tables, so they wouldn't get flushed away or fell down whiel asleep. As John was finally satisfied with his work, as a blanket monster appeared in the room, ran against the first Arcade machine, let out an "oiiii", turned around and tried to continue walking, just to trip on one of the blankets it was carrying. Mitchell fell over and got burried under the mountain of blankets, pillows and towels he was carrying and his partner, after a moment of silence, bursted out laughing about the scene, before starting to dig his partner our of the mess. "There was a laundry room in the back, I broke open the lock on the door and brought all the clean stuff I could find." the dragon soldier explained, slightly disorientated and dizzy, before they put all of his bounty on the makeshift bed. "Well done buddy." john praised him, after he got his laughing under controll and back in his head, a small voice screamed out in shock, exclaiming that the Arcades owner will have him pay for the damages. Well, couldn't help that now. But well, Leith asked if anybody wanted to play cards and while John was a bit too tired for it at the moment, Sheppard was immedaitely ready. "Yeah, just tell me how to play and I'm in." the Commandramon happily exclaimed as he joiend the others."

After a few minutes, Justice returned from the kitchen only carrying a few things he recovered from there like three cases of soda and snacks. There wasn’t a lot of things in there since everything looked to be cleared out — no tools to fortify the barricade, no cooked food, nothing. Only what he could find in one of the back closets. Aw well, it didn’t matter. As long as he found something, that’s all that mattered.
As he was walking, he stopped and watched as a small figure covered in a blanket ran into an arcade machine, making him let out a small chuckle. He went to the door to check on the barricade, and was surprised with how well fortified it was despite it being only twenty minutes when he came up with the idea. Digimon really know how to work under pressure. The only thing that lingers in his mind was will the barricade hold off when the inevitable storm surge comes. There was no point in worrying about it now.
”Yeah, I couldn’t find much in the kitchen”, he said to everyone, setting the stuff down on a nearby table. “But some of the stuff I found should last us until the storm ends as no one goes into town on it.”The some of the other Digimon came up to grab a can of soda and a bag of snacks each. They started to thank him one by one, in which Justice obliged. It looks like they were a bit tired from all of the hard work. After that, Justice took three cans of soda: one for him, Vee, and Gummy and walked over there to see how they were doing. He couldn’t see Gummy, but he can see Vee, with two other Digimon with him?? Taking a seat right ext to him, he raised an eyebrow at the blue dragon.
“Alright, what did I miss?”
Vee tilted his head up, with a confused smile. “Ah you know, working our butts off and stuff.”
“I mean the two on your lap right there.”
“Oh yeah, I’ve become a babysitter for these two ‘Mons.”The two of them were already fast asleep since the commotion had all died down.
“Heh, well you’ve been busy.” Justice said with a smirk etching across his face. He handed him one of the soda cans in his hand. “Where’s your brother at?”
“He’s over there with the other Gumdramon.” he replied, taking a sip from his soda. “He’s a really nice guy.” Justice turned to where Vee was pointing at. He spotted the two, at first he couldn’t tell which was who since they looked identical. But after a close examination, the other one was more taller with more fur. He opened his soda and took a sip, seeing that his Digimon was alright. Seeing as he was not too far away, he rolled the other can towards him, too comfortable to leave his spot. When Flamedramon asked everyone if they wanted to play a game of cards like Go Fish or Five Card Draw, Justice motion his head and hand, declining the offer. Vee wanted to, but not wanting to disturb the sleeping Digimon he was cradling declined as well.
Meanwhile, Gummy couldn’t help but get flustered at the Gumdramon’s comment. “Oh, um...thanks.” he said, looking at the flame on his tail, trying to regain a bit of composure. He didn’t get it; he was rude to him earlier, so why was he still nice to him? Not knowing what to say since he was not good at making conversation, he took a breath.
“So...you’re another Gumdramon; like me right? You and I have something in common then, huh? That was a poor start to conversing. Suddenly he felt something cold hit his leg. He glance down and saw that it was a soda can. He wonder where did it come from.
