Finding Ancient City [Nik]

Brad found that he agreed with Gryz's summary of this place. He looked inside one of the collapsed buildings, it certainly did not look like it was evacuated in an orderly fashion. "Indeed. Tools and apparatus as they were on the benches... projects in various states of completion left like this... yet..." he paused as he looked at a large blackboard, its chalk faded, but with some complicated, intricate calculations written upon it. "Once there was so much enthusiasm in this place." he finished.
Nik agreed on that account, this place was more like Pripyat than a closed mining town. That combined with what Gryz concluded left something heavy in the air.
The white crystals on the ground? Salt mixed with snow. Nik found that unusual. "Hmm. I thought salt was meant to prevent snow from accumulating..." he mused. Probably foolishly, he scooped some up, then prodded his tongue against it. Immediately he blurted it out with disgust, but the taste was certain. "It is salt..." he said, but not all of it. "...mixed with something like... sand?"
"Hm. White sand then." Brad said, simply, although after that he was hardly likely to test it out himself.
Then Tetsu found a date of establishment. Nik and Brad rushed to confirm. And they too saw the date. Nik rubbed his chin.
"January 2003... that's 16 and a half years ago." he said, rubbing his temple. "At least, by human world time. Digital world time, that's..."
"115 years and 6 months ago." Brad finished the calculation before he did. Nik circled around to take a look at the place, yes, it did look like over a century of decay had happened here.
"Question remains... what caused it?" Nik asked, a little worried.

"...All of these, abandoned... there are no sign of fighting at all, yet somehow everything is gone... left mid-work..." Gryz commented. "...And from the sight of it it doesn't look like anything of value was taken... it's as if everyone was teleported away suddenly. But what makes me even more surprised is the fact that this city smelled untouched until now..."
"What do you mean?" Tetsu asked.
"If there are signs of people who enters here and tried to find whatever happened to this place, then it'll be too obvious. Unless they tried to, and succeed in returning whatever they took back to its original positions, this place is too "clean" from interference of outsider. It's as if we're in a historical site with no tampering at all."
"...Not even ruins explorer?"
"...If there are ruins explorers,, then we probably would have seen more chalks than those," Gryz pointed at the blackboard. Tetsu understood the significance of chalks... but what's more shocking is he totally sensed no one in here... even if this place was abandoned...
"...Why wouldn't there be anyone who would think that coming here is a good idea? Like... the Shining Sea is a harsh place... the sands are white, mixed with crystals, it glitters, and when blizzard hits it probably gonna be the worst thing ever... Whiteouts are not funny. So... the question is... this place looked like it would give enough shelter against those sort of elements... why won't they just live here?"
"...Most likely..." Gryz started "...that this city is related to Digivice in one way or another. We're called here... and there must be a reason."
"But what about other chosens? Why haven't they found this place?" Tetsu asked in return
".........Good question. Brad, what do you know about the Shining Sea? When was it first rediscovered?"

Brad sat upon his haunches and rubbed his chin as he listened to Tetsu and Gryz's remarks about the state of this city. Abandoned, yet untouched. A curious paradox, considering that over 100 years had seemingly passed here. Yet... maybe that was it too?
Nobody alive had heard of the Shining Sea when he had first explored it with PROFIT. It was like... it had suddenly appeared out of nowhere, possibly after being lost for quite some time. And it wasn't the only region to suddenly appear out of nowhere either. First, he answered their question.
"I found this place first when I was flying with Colin, Luke and Bellamy on Daedalus." he said to the others. "We were travelling from Rustport to Snowflake and when we crossed the mountain range separating the two, we saw this place below us. Eventually, we joined up with Mana and Cion and we explored a little on foot. We found abandoned civilizations, as well as crystals that seemed to react between human and partner - like, Colin and Luke touched one of the crystals together, then Luke evolved to Adult level seemingly automatically."
He went over a few other details of his journey here, like the ruins of a civilization they had found. He then broke off as he thought about why the Shining Sea hadn't been discovered yet.
"I have a theory." Brad said eventually. "A few places of the digital world have suddenly appeared after a long time in limbo. I mean... Old Terminus, the Spears of Megiddo, the Backup Bayou, the Sunken Elysium. I think the Shining Sea was one of those places too - somewhere that was inaccessible to the rest of the digital world until recently."
"Hmm... that makes sense." Nik backed up his partner. "I mean, if other regions that had disappeared just came back like this one, that might be why it hasn't been looted yet. Although that's another thought too, why it's revealed itself to us and not others in the past?"

So basically, some places just appears out of nowhere... Interesting. But even then, it still brings question why on earth does this city call them indeed? Why can't it be people who explores this place prior? Why must it be them, the two of them, and not back then when Brad and Nik was together with Amelie and Cion? That's... frankly strange. If all it needs are chosen, then from the word, unless this Amelie and Cion were Digimon, Nik and Brad alone supposedly enough... Could it be that it requires to partnered humans? But even then, he doesn't think that's the thing...
"...If that's the case, then basically, the data around Shining Sea either stabilized, or it suddenly appeared of nowhere? What I know is simply about Sunken Elysium. It's basically area where it suddenly appeared in Digital World... basically, it wasn't there before... Though I don't think Shining Sea is like that at all.. It can't be that this sort of place was not found... I mean... the placement is kind of odd, you know? It's as if someone added it to edge of Northern Prominence or something...." Tetsu commented.
"...I guess that's how it is. It doesn't make sense. Neither does the Bayou by the way... it's almost as if someone overwritten the area of that part to make this Bayou appear out of nowhere..."
"But there's a thing that makes me curious... Basically, about the Digimons that lived there... are they just... isolated until suddenly the area got rediscovered, or are they just migrated there?"
"Good question... but what's your point?"
"Well... I mean when the area was "lost", if they suddenly disappeared and reappeared... Does that means Digimons that used to live there were ejected or something? Or are they..."
Tetsu doesn't resume what he about to say. It's too macabre. Gryz understood it quickly. A chasm that left behind, what if Digimon fell to that place? It's terrifying. But at the same time, he doesn't feel that this place just like that willed to existence...
"...We probably should explore more." Gryz suggested. "Where do you think we should go to, you two?"

Tetsu's reasoning was so logical that Nik forgot for a moment that he was talking to someone 6 years younger than himself. When he realized this, he couldn't help but smile. "You're pretty clever for your age, Tetsu, you know that, bro?" he asked. He didn't mean to be patronizing, just the young man was impressed at the wisdom in Tetsu's words.
But after he said that, Nik frowned, trying to get his head around the phenomena of the digital world. So far in his experience, yes, things could occur that entire regions could appear out of seemingly nowhere, thanks to the volatile nature of the data of the digital world. "I mean, I get where you're coming from. The Bayou is probably the most startling example. I mean, surely people travel regularly between the Timberlands and Whitewater, yet, now, when travellers pass through that area, now they have to deal with the Bayou. I can deal with the Shining Sea being less visible though, since there are mountain ranges that separate it from the Flatlands and Prominence."
Tetsu then thought about the digimon that lived there. While Nik and Brad had never visited the Bayou, they wondered what the background of the digimon that lived there? In the end Brad merely shrugged. "I guess the only way to know for sure is to ask them directly." he reasoned.
Gryz then asked where they should explore next. Nik thought for a moment, then answered. "I think we should find the administrative center of this town." he said. "It might have the answers we're looking for about what went on here."
"I agree. A town hall or a library or something like that." Brad added.

"Eh? Ehehehe..." Tetsu at first wondered why he was being praised, but he totally forgot that all these digital mumbo jumbo wouldn't have any sort of meaning for kids around his age. They are probably more interested in how to spend their time in Digital World more than understanding the differences between the world. Ever since he became chosen a year ago, he indeed grew up some more... and of course much more open to different sort of adventures. He's no longer a child who's so affixed toward his old farm. A child who knows nothing slowly become aware of how wide the world is. This is all thanks to this world obviously.
"Hmmmm... That's a good idea... coming to the bayou to ask people there what's going on... Maybe I'll go there... but problem regarding that place is... Digimon there apparently talk with their own language... I wonder if we can find someone with common tongue..."
Looking for the city hall huh.
"Timeout," Gryz would suddenly say. "Before any of you think that it's wise to look randomly, perhaps I should evolve to Belphemon again and look around the air?"
"Oh, that's a good idea!" Tetsu obviously evolved Gryz again to Belphemon. The demon lord Digimon once again offered to carry Brad and Nik as he took the sky. Tetsu immediately gawked. This wasn't town like they expected! This is like a small city!
"...Oh holy shit, look at the size... golly, I'm glad that I evolved Gryz just now!"
a snort escaped the demon lord's muzzle. There's no way they could fully explore this place on land in just few days. He soon signed to Tetsu.
"Gryz said that we might need to camp in here..." Tetsu commented. "The size is a bit too big... and... well, about the noticable places..."
First he pointed at the building on the north, huge enough, and looked like administrative building. Then, somewhere closer to the center, a library... then... scattered around the cities, something akin to windmill... but it doesn't make sense why there are windmills here... finally, he pointed at the eastern outskirt... a building that loomed alone, on a hill overlooking the city.

That concept was somewhat new to Nik, the fact that digimon spoke different languages. "Hmm, that's odd. I thought digimon had a kind of universal language program that allowed them to speak and understand multiple languages." he remarked.
"Might not be the case with older digimon, Nik." Brad pointed out. Nik supposed he agreed with that. As far as he knew, the history of the digital world stretched back for at least 300 years, and some of that was interrupted with time warps and other time-affecting phenomena that made such comparisons difficult to comprehend. So he wouldn't enquire on that further.
Next, Gryz suggested that he evolve to Belphemon and take some reconnaissance in the air. Brad, being a former digimon of the 7/71st recon, knew this was an excellent idea, given that so much more information could be obtained from a birds-eye view of things, and immediately nodded in approval. Nik, not knowing as much, trusted his partner in this and made his consent known too.
"Well, if you think it'll help us know more about our situation, go for it, I say." the young Maori man reasoned. Then Gryz evolved to Belphemon and offered to let them ride him once again. Nik and Brad did so, taking their positions carefully on his back so they wouldn't fall off. Thankfully Gryz was strong enough to support them in this investigation. And what an investigation it was.
"Oh my... what an incredible city this is." Brad remarked, the Gryzmon holding on to the Belphemon's back as sturdily as he could. Seeing the fantastic city below, he wanted so much to explore it at ground level.
As Tetsu pointed out the other landmarks of the city, Nik quickly agreed to investigate them up close too. "Yep! Of course! I hope they're as they seem..." he remarked as they hopefully lowered themselves toward them. "But we have to be careful for traps, okay? Not that this isn't an awesome discovery, but, we gotta think ahead just in case this place is uninhabited for a reason. Hopefully residual traps isn't one of those reasons."
But after that, Nik and Brad would follow Tetsu and Gryz's lead in landing here and investigating this lost civilization.

"No, I think it have to do with feral degree," Gryz commented "Basically, tribes are more likely to use their own language as opposed to common tongue, because they don't really have any reason to talk with outsiders. This led to them shedding the common language data, and instead keeping their own language database. Does that makes sense? Well I think that's how it worked, or at least to me."
"Basically like how you can forgot about your own mother tongue if you didn't practice it for long?" Tetsu suggested.
"Something like that."
On question regarding whether the buildings are as what they seem... Tetsu felt so too. He hoped that the place is not... trapped or anything. Then again, except the one on the eastern end, he felt there's no reason for the place to be booby trapped. The first one that they descended to is a building that resembled a city hall. The gate are quite huge, but surprisingly light. Light seem to penetrate the building from its ruined roof, which has pretty much caved in.
The receptionist table has several papers on it... which unfortunately has degraded to point where they can no longer be read. But the situation was the same. it looked like as if it's abandoned mid way...
"..............Ancient syntax," Gryz would comment, pointing at some plaque.
"....Yeah, if these Digimojis are translated, the language they use is sorta like... very archaic japanese," Tetsu would comment.
"...Yet wasn't the date just about sixteen years ago, give or take?"
"Yeah, that part confuses me... What should we look in here, you two?"

Nik understood that at least. "Yeah, of course... there's languages that programmers might not know about." he concluded. "But hopefully we still might have ways of communicating, right? It might take longer than speaking, but, it's possible with patience to learn the languages. Especially if we use things like hand signals, facial expressions, even pictures help."
"You sure sound like you know your stuff, Nik." Brad remarked, looking at his partner with praise.
"Heh, well, I'm Maori, bro, my ancestors would have never learned English if we didn't start off like that." Nik grinned. "But of course, you have to build trust first... and, well, that was a little difficult. But the history of New Zealand can come later, let's focus on this."
They entered what appeared to be the city hall. "Yep... looks more like 115 years have passed here, not 16." Nik said, looking at the ruin. Gryz found a plaque, which provided more information than the rotting papers.
Tetsu asked where they should go next. Brad answered quickly. "I don't trust the structural integrity of this place, so it might be a bad idea going upstairs. I think we should go downstairs. It's wiser to store valuables in places below ground after all, and we might find something of value down there."
"Sounds logical." Nik remarked. "Alright, let's look for some stairs that head downwards and see what we find, eh?" he suggested to Tetsu and Gryz.

"Usually with gestures, but let's not forget that..." Gryz paused for a moment, seem to perks up at some sounds. Tetsu doesn't seem to hear anything, so he tilted his head, but Gryz looked around to check the source of the sound. When he felt it's nothing, he continued. "Where were we? Oh right, about feral tribes...
...Thing is when I go to various places of Digital World, tribal race's response to visitors usually involves attacking, as if they're fully feral. Most of the time they're not really willing to talk. However, this is not true to some tribes either. There are some who actually wanted to open trades with outsiders, and thus began to send envoys outside. Apparently this method are the most preferable to minimize to be superexposed to the outsiders."
"Gryz, did you heard something?" Tetsu asked.
The Bearmon nodded slowly. "...It might be wind, but it came from the second floor... Regardless, going up might not be a solid choice considering how..." the Bearmon tapped the floor near him. It creaked loudly.
"...Aye, not a good thing to walk without being careful. I think Tetsu and Brad would be fine, but as fellow heavy weighted individuals, I think we should watch our steps, eh, Nik?"
Thankfully, if the group was being careful, they probably only going to find one of their leg stuck on the wooden board at worst because it gave in, but thankfully, nothing too bad. When they reached the basement however, what awaits them are...
"......................Computer Server?"
And not just mere computer server either. It's like something out of mag-tec fantasy. Unfortunately, based on the light of the server, it doesn't looks like it's on.
"...We might need to find generator around here, or turn on the electricity or something," Gryz suggested.

Nik and Brad took that in about feral tribes. Yes, some would of course attack any and all outsiders. "Surely there's still a way to maybe reach out to them?" Nik asked, although he knew the answer to that.
"Sometimes digimon just can't be reasoned with." Brad answered his question. "Sorry, Nik. Here it's the same story as with some humans."
"I thought so." Nik admitted in defeat. He looked up when he heard the noise in the roof above, yeah... it probably wasn't safe to go up just yet. As a precaution, Brad de-digivolved from his Gryzmon form to his Bearmon form, quickly reducing his size and mass so that he could tread more easily in this structure.
Going down meanwhile was still something of a challenge. After Nik's foot burst through the rotten floorboards below, thankfully able to prevent himself falling down, Brad offered to be his guide, the little Bearmon leading him along a path where the wood was still intact.
Eventually they made their way to the basement and there they found something they were not expecting. A computer server.
"What in the world...?" Nik breathed.
Brad's blue eyes blinked for a few moments. He hadn't seen anything like this before. Not since... ugh, his memories were such a mess. But it seemed there was no power going to the machine. Thus, they would need to find a power source.
"Would any be working after all this time?" Nik wondered out loud as he searched the room.
"No worries, if we can't find any, we could call Luke over tamernet." Brad reminded his partner, remembering his Elecmon friend. "He's an engineer after all, he could get this thing up and running if we can't."
"True, but that's a last resort, we don't want to bother him that much." Nik replied, continuing the search for a power source. He carefully looked around the room, hoping to find something they could use.

Admittedly, Gryz felt a bit guilty thinking that Brad perhaps thinking about putting some teeth cleft thingy that used to power accumulator battery on Luke's tail feather and put it to the server... not that it probably would be enough all thing considered. Luke probably will be out of energy before he could let the server run for a while. At any rate...
"....I don't think any generator down here will be filled with energy either. So I guess the way to restore this server is to go to the town's power plant or something..."
"Is there anything like that here?" Tetsu asked.
"...Well... there was one place in mind... near the eastern area, there are several windmill-like places, right?"
"Those, huh..."
Tetsu thought about it for a while. "What do you say, Nik? Brad? Should we just go there? I don't think there's any harm in doing so anyway... But at the same time, if those three windmills are enough to power the entire town, that felt like... there's probably something behind it, huh?"

Tetsu and Gryz's suggestions were perfectly reasonable. "True. Best get it running on its own energy rather than have something else tinker with it and possibly fry it." Nik replied.
Gryz then said that there were several windmill-like structures to the east of this town. Nik's face lit up as he remembered. "Yeah... that's right! Those windmills sure looked like turbines to me! And the wind can get pretty strong around this place, so... if we can get those working, that could just be the ticket!"
"Hopefully their wiring is alright though." Brad added. "But... this place is pretty dry, corrosion probably won't be a problem."
"Interesting that you know that, Brad." Nik remarked to his partner.
"Heh. Lessons learned is all I have to say on that." Brad replied.
With that, Nik turned back to Tetsu and Gryz. "Alright, let's check out these wind turbines and see if they can be restored to working order." he said.

Going to other place again, this time it's a little bit of a flight. The sun has set, but that's normal considering that this is the far north, and what's more, they're inside a mountain, of course lighting would be an issue. Thankfully, Gryz seem to be fine with this as he could see within darkness. Hmm... Well, let's see...
On the near fareast part of the city, they would see some sentries looking gates, but there are also windmills... For the meantime, Gryz ignored the watch towers and instead looked at the windmill-like structure. Strangely, it doesn't look like it would move by wind, but by water... was this city submerged before? Or there is some other method? Yet, when they entered in, to Tetsu's surprise...
"...There's no mechanism inside?"
Exactly, it's hollow. The windmill instead is full of writing on the wall. It has faded, especially those on the bottom, but the top is definitely still looking fine.
"...This is... old archaic poem? It sounded... like it's a poem. I don't quite get the language though," Gryz commented after he devolved.
"How do you read it?" Tetsu asked.
"From top to bottom. That one on the top, with red color? That's probably the start point while that one on the bottom with blue color is the end."
"So can you recite it?"
Gryz tried to read it as best as he can, but nothing seem to work. "...Perhaps we should try to restore the writing just to be sure?"
"Sounds like a good idea."
Tetsu took out a marker and began to work on the writing on the wall. It took him about ten minutes to be done and suddenly... the room grows brighter. Power seems to start to flow... The dark city slowly regains its light, but only a bit of them.
"There shold be three of similar structure. We should probably work on it."

As they accompanied Tetsu and Gryz, Nik and Brad were a little confused as to what exactly they were meant to be doing in the inspection of this place. Neither of them knew the ancient digimoji language, and hardly knew what to do as they entered this new environment. So they remained silent as Tetsu and Gryz looked around first.
And to both of their surprise, there didn't seem to be a mechanism inside. Nik rubbed his chin, trying to make sense of this.
"So... this place is powered by some kind of language, right?" he asked, then narrowed his eyes. "...or some kind of program?"
That made most sense to him here. Hopefully they had the means to open it up and proceed. It seemed that Tetsu agreed, for he took out a marker and wrote notes in accordance to the wall. Neither Nik or Brad could keep up with the level of writing involved, since Nik wasn't nearly advanced enough with Japanese writing to be immediately familiar with it, and Brad did not know the words being written either. For now, the two would simply trust Tetsu and Gryz with what was being communicated here, and hoped that the fact that they were merely here as keepers of the peace was not lost on whatever conversation was going on here.
Eventually, as Tetsu and Gryz made their communications, Nik and Brad would make their enquiries. "Our intentions are alright aren't they?" Nik asked. "Like... we're not dealing with some kind of power here that we might not be prepared for?" he hoped to make that clear. There were things about the digital world that scared him, and he hoped that this would not be another one of those things.
