Bright fires cast dark shadows... [Yomi/Katherine]

Post by Nobuhiko Yomi on Dec 1, 2018 18:15:16 GMT
There was a terrible storm outside, the like of which Yomi had never seen before, not even in Japan.
The clouds, made of ash, were pitch black, and the water falling from the skies looked more like oil - black, viscous, and sticky. Crimson lightning struck from above, followed by rolling thunder, which sounded more like laughter and bellowing of a beast. In such terrible weather, it was dangerous to remain outside, much more so in the skies. The storm forced the Gryphon and its two passengers down, to not risk being struck by the crimson bolts of electricity. Fortunately, there was a shelter nearby. A cave, with its entrance just far enough above the surface to prevent any streams of ashen water streaming into it. This cave would protect humans and digimon alike, from the wrath of the elements.
The cave was... comfortable. It was dry and warm inside, and there were no winds blowing through. The bottom of the cave was covered with soft sand, and the walls were sturdy and solid, made from melted stone. As if it were the breath of a dragon that created this cave, and not natural elements like water. Then again, this place was anything but natural, and having just flown the Gryphon, Yomi did not put the existence of actual dragons to be an impossibility in this strange land of bizarre mysteries. Still, after the creature landed, the girl felt her knees wobbly. She almost crawled into the safety of the cave and kissed the ground once in there. Despite the aura of gravity, she held Katherine in a vice-grip throughout the entire journey. For a self-affirmed average schoolgirl, she had strong arms.
Still, it was safe now. Yomi helped making the fire by finding some of the glowing sticks that Cano showed her when she first landed here. These sticks burned slowly, and gave far more light and warmth than one could assume they would. The fire created a small circle of light for the three to sit around, while the darkness around them was becoming thicker. Night was approaching, and the distorted light of the distant sun faded from the land, sentencing it to a very cold, very hostile darkness. But it was safe here, in this cave.
Yomi was sitting on a stone she pulled closer to act as a seat, and had her shirt in her lap, wearing nothing but her undershirt as she tried to scrub out the black stains that the oily rain left on the fabrics. Her bright orange uniform was more like a faint shade of reddish, with stains soaking into the back. The girl feverishly scrubbed the fabrics, trying to get them at least semi-clean. It was, after all... her only article of clothing. And it was pretty worn from working in the cantina already. Eventually, Yomi sighed and gave up. Instead pulling out her notebook from the backpack, and her pen. This stop was, after all, the perfect place to make another note.
Opening it, she briefly looking at Katherine, who was setting up camp with the help of the digimon. It was... endearing to see them working together like that, as a team. They really are friends, huh... - she thought, her thoughts going back to the Strabimon she first met. Maybe he was supposed to be her partner? Maybe if she were a bit more pushy and insisting, he would have helped her... Not that it mattered anymore. These two promised to get her home. Smiling, maybe for the first time in a long while, Yomi began writing her notes.
Entry 2.
Today, I met a very special girl...
She kept writing and writing, not really paying attention to what was going on around her. The diary of a girl with broken glasses.

It was a shame this was an expedition and Katherine was not leaving the settlement for good yet because that meant she didn’t have the rest of her clothes inside her backpack, aside from her pajama and an extra outfit. On the other hand, it did mean she had stuff for an expedition, like a tent and a sleeping bag (Only one, sadly.) In any case, there was no use in crying over spilled milk; there was a storm, they couldn’t travel like this, so they had to camp. Was this the perfect place? Probably not, but one of the best you could find in the middle of this wasteland, that for sure.
Jazz was back to her Chohakkaimon form and kept helping Katherine accommodate what would be their home for the night. They weren’t going anywhere until tomorrow so it probably wasn’t a good idea to sleep over the sand. And even when the cave seemed like a safe place, it probably wasn’t a good idea to sleep uncovered, so setting up a small tent seemed like the way to go.
Yomi knew more than what she expected from her to know, in all honesty. Katherine hadn’t wandered enough around the Dark Area to know about the existence of those fire sticks that were giving them heat and illumination for the time being. Those were really useful!
Once the duo was done with the tent, Jazz walked outside of the cave, while Katherine made her way to the rock the girl was sitting on. She was now writing, after apparently giving up on trying to wipe out the stains this odd rain had left on her uniform. It was a good thing Katherine had her jacket to protect the clothes she was wearing underneath, but still…
“Please, I want you to wear this.” Katherine took out a pink hoodie sweater from her backpack. It was a part of her spare set of clothes, so now it could provide Yomi with some warmth. The girl extended the sweater to the girl, who seemed to be focused on writing something. Still, she wouldn’t take a no for an answer.
She knew her next request would be a little harder to accept but she had to try. “I have a full set of clothes to spare too. You told me it’s been around a week since you arrived into this world, right? I can’t believe you’ve been wearing that since then.” For someone as feminine as Katherine, who loved smelling nice and being well dressed, just the fact of thinking about spending a full weak on her uniform made her cringe. “Please, I would like you to wear those.”
If she accepted, Yomi would find a pair of black jeans, a light blue blouse and, of course, that pink colored hoodie Katherine had already offered.
“This weather really came in a bad moment for us, didn’t it?” She asked, looking at the stormy sky from the safety of their cave. “I’m sure we’ll be in the settlement tomorrow. We’re probably around half an hour from there by flying. But it’s still not a good idea to cross the skies under these circumstances.”
Meanwhile, Jazz had made appear her giant hammer and was swinging it outside of the cave. She just couldn’t stop training a single day since she had gotten that form. The curly-haired then lowered her gaze to the notebook Yomi had over her knees, without really stopping to read exactly what she was writing. “Are you keeping a diary or something of the sorts?” Katherine asked, showing genuine curiosity, as always.

"... She and her friend paid the innkeeper, Morwena, for her to let me go along with them. She also promised to get me home, no matter what. That is an incredible thing to do for a stranger you meet for the first time in your life. Such unique and amazing act of selflessness... I'm not sure I would have been able to do that. When I get home I... I don't know what I will do. Or how I will explain what happened to them. But whatever happens, I'll need to find a way to show gratitude and..."
Engrossed in her writing, Yomi did not notice Katherine coming up to her. She was too busy getting drowned in the warm fuzzy feelings of gratitude and hope, along with daydreams of returning back to her comfortable little world, where everything was so neat, normal, and orderly. Only when spoken to, did the girl look up, the glasses sliding to the front of her nose again.
"Ara?" - she hummed, a bit of a flush appearing on her face as she briskly closed the notebook she's been writing in. Seeing that her new friend had brought her some clothes. A big smile appeared on her face.
"Oh, thank you! Thank you! I did my best to wash the clothes I had, but they've been getting messy and worn out in all the wrong places. I uhh... I'll try these on right now!"
With that, Yomi dropped the notebook and scurried off behind one of the larger stones found in the cave, and soon the sounds of shuffling were heard from behind, as she undressed, and tried to fit into the clothes she was given. It was when the first issue had announced itself, first by a couple of grunts, followed by a brief, but very audible sound.
*RRRRIP*
It echoed in the cave, followed by an awkward silence. A few moments later, more grunts, and shuffled noises, as the clothes were apparently taken off. There were all kinds of noises, that resembled one's rear grinding against the sand, legs wiggling, more grunts, and exasperated sighs of failure and defeat. Yomi spent around 15 minutes behind that stone, before eventually walking out behind it.
She was wearing the pink hoodie, which was the only article that reasonably fit, due to being stretchy and a few sizes bigger than Katherine actually needed. The sleeves were a bit high, reaching Yomi's elbows, and the waistline barely covered her rear. Acting like a sweater-dress, of sorts. She kept the stockings, though they did not survive some wear and tear during the week, as there were a few holes in them, mostly at the back of her legs. She stood there, holding Katherine's clothes in her hands, a red blush over her cheeks. She knew that she looked a little ... risque like that. Or a lot. And it was extremely awkward.
"I uhhh... I couldn't fit into the rest of them. This hoodie is so much warmer than my shirt though..." - the put the hood on, letting the shade it cast hide just how red in the face she was.
Getting back to where she was, and feeling the hoodie hike up as she sat, Yomi crossed her legs and picked up her notebook again. Tucking it in her bosom.
"It's a diary, yeah... I decided to start keeping one. I have plenty of paper in my schoolbag. When Robinson Crusoe was stuck on an uninhabited island for 28 years, he kept a diary too. It kept him sane."
Yomi read plenty of adventure books.

Silently, Katherine just waited in front of the giant stone while Yomi got changed. It made her happy that she accepted her offer, mainly because she would be dying inside if she was the one wearing her school uniform for around a week. While time passed by, she had to admit she was getting a bit impatient, though. How could it take her so long to get on those clothes? She had heard a few pretty strange sounds, and it did seem like she wasn’t succeeding, but what could be the reason? The green-eyed could only wonder. Right when she considered it was more than enough and she opened her mouth to ask if everything was fine, the brown-haired teenager walked out from behind the giant rock.
She wasn’t wearing Katherine’s spare set of clothes, but only her pink hoodie combined with nothing else but her own stockings. A slight blush made its way to Katherine’s cheeks. It was rather surprising seeing a girl like Yomi wearing such a… revealing outfit. And it seemed like she wasn’t feeling too comfortable about it either, so the curly-haired girl made her best effort to not mention anything about it, even when the blushing was impossible to hide.
At first, it didn’t seem like, but aside a fair bit taller, Yomi also had thicker thighs and an overall curvier complexion that the Spaniard, so it made perfect sense she didn’t fit in those clothes. Katherine tried to take these thoughts off her head as soon as she could and concentrate on the good side of this: at least she fitted in the hoodie!
“I’m glad.” Even if a bit showy, she looked very good with that sweater and she felt warmer, which was the whole point of all of this. “In any case, we should get to the settlement tomorrow, so you probably won’t need to get any more clothes inside this world.”
“That’s a pretty interest reference.” The girl mustered a grin for her peer. Maybe it was time to tell her something interesting. “You know when I was little I actually visited the Robinson Crusoe Island? It’s an island in Chile where Alexander Selkirk got shipwrecked. The book is partly based on his adventures inside of this island, so this is why that island has that name. It’s a very interesting place.” She then realized she let herself talk too much. “I-I’m sorry… I thought you could find it interesting.” She explained, visibly flustered, her index finger playing with the sand right in front of her. It was not the time to bore Yomi with a random story. “I think it is… very smart from you to keep a diary.” She decided to finish the subject with that, even if she barely muttered the last part.
“Jasso~” Jazz’s voice made Katherine raise her gaze. “I’m done with training and I’m hungry now.” The Chohakkaimon took a sit on the ground, in front of the two girls. “Are you hungry too, Yomi?” She asked, tilting her head and looking at the girl from head to toes.
A brief silence ensued.
“Hey, Jasso! How come I cannot dress like that when I use a human holosuit but you let her dress that way?” The pig-girl pointed her finger at her tamer, frowning.
Awkwaaaard.

The little bit of silence between the two of them and the exchange of blushes only confirmed what Yomi knew already. Wearing just an undersized hoodie and trying to substitute it for a full set of clothes was going to be ... difficult. Especially once they would reach the city, where there would be other humans. The thought of appearing like this made the girl with the broken glasses red to the ears. She sighed, and reached for her skirt, pulling it on again. It wasn't as worn compared to the shirt, and helped cover her rear a bit better.
As the fire burned and crackled, spreading its warmth around the cave, Yomi shifted to sit closer to Katherine. When up close, the glasses girl was much taller than her petite savior - Kathy could barely reach her shoulder. But it did not represent the reality of the situation. With what's been going on, it was Yomi who was the small one. As in helpless and weak. But the story about Robinson Crusoe's island managed to distract her from these thoughts. Contrary to what she thought, the girl was very much interested.
"Of course I'm interested! I loved that book!" - she said encouragingly, placing a hand on Katherine's shoulder. "I've never been to that place? What is it like? Is it a reproduction of what it was in the book? Or are there antiquated remains of his life on the island? It's amazing that the guy managed to thrive out there. Must have been very lonely though..." - Yomi trailed off.
Come to think of it... this adventure of mine is kind of like it, is it not? Except... Robinson had all sorts of stuff washed up on the beach. Tools, weapons, gunpowder. All I had was ... this backpack. But even if I did, I probably wouldn't have known what to do with it... I mean, I can barely hammer a nail. If Takeko-san were here...
Her thoughts went back to one of her friends. The tall, quiet girl who had a gentle demeanor, but at the same time looked like she had been in a lot of fights, with hands of hers bandaged all the time and covered in lacerations and cuts. She had a look of calmness and competence about her, as if there was nothing she could not do. A melancholic smile appeared on her face.
Takeko-san would've been a better Robinson than me.
The appearance of Jazz, in her odd and quirky fashion, distracted Yomi again. Another bout of awkward silence followed. Looking at the curious digimon, the girl explained:
"Do you think I'd normally dress like this? In human world, wearing less clothes can send all kinds of wrong messages to people who see you. What's a holosuit though?"

Slowly, a huge grin made its way to Katherine’s face. She felt so genuinely happy that Yomi had some kind of interest for what she had said. Most of the time people would only nod to her stories or ignore them. She was so used to being a bookworm and knowing that no one really liked that, she didn’t think someone could actually enjoy a story like that. “You are?” She was so happy to hear her say that she was interested, there was a certain glimmer in her eyes, even, that glimmer that could only be found when someone shared knowledge with her or showed genuine interest in the knowledge she had to share.
“It’s not as archaic as you would think! I mean, it doesn’t have top technology but it is not abandoned. There’s people living in there, clothe shops, a hospital, and even a school.” She had been there with her mom and dad when she went to Chile on vacation, while they lived in Argentina. “There’s some stuff I don’t remember because I was seven years old but…” She raised her gaze, trying to remember more about it. “… Oh! Everything around there works with wind power. They don’t actually have generators or power plants.” The smile hadn’t worn off her face, it was so good to have someone she could talk about this kind of stuff other than her digimon partner. “Jazz says that’s inconvenient but I think they were doing pretty good.” She then stopped for a second to muse about what her peer had just said. “It does sound lonely.” She tilted her head, mustering a dubious expression. “I’m glad we found you, then.” She went back to showing a smile.
And even when Yomi was wearing her skirt again, Jazz’s question still felt a little bit awkward. “The wrong… message?” The pig-girl tilted her head, a little curious.
“It means like people can think you’re trying to seduce those who see you or something like that.” Katherine explained, holding a calm countenance. Out of her backpack, she took a thermos flask and took a sip from it. She then turned to Nobuhiko. “Would you like some? It’s just some water.” She asked, extending the cup to her, even if they were pretty close to each other at the moment.
“So you wear it because you have no choice? I think you look good!” Jazz responded, showing an honest grin.
The green-eyed then decided to tackle the question she had been asked. “A holosuit is a sort of modification you make to your digivice to make your digimon partner look like something else.” She took out her own digivice to explain a bit better. “Once you activate it your partner will take a certain form, that’s been previously loaded into the holosuit. When I had to take her to the human world with me, I used a holosuit to make Jazz look like a regular human girl. I told everyone her name was Jazmine and she was a friend of mine.” Maybe it wouldn't be hard to tell that name was thought along the way. “But she said clothes are really uncomfortable and always wanted to wear weird or less than decent outfits.” Katherine took a hand to her forehead, letting go a sigh.
“When are we eating, Jasso?” The Chohakkaimon asked. When she came to think about it, Katherine noticed she was fairly hungry too! “I’ve got some food inside my backpack. Are you ready to have dinner, Yomi?”

"Oh? There are people living there? I didn't know. I thought it was made into a museum or something. It was an uninhabited island in the book..."
Yomi was surprised, but also a bit disappointed that there were people living on the island now. Ruining the atmosphere of adventure and discovery it had back when Robinson Crusoe first landed on it. Now it was just... an island. With people on it. One of many. She would have loved to see the hut and the gunpowder cache and the fields written about in the book recreated or left untouched.
The topic though quickly returned back to clothes as the digimon kept insisting that Yomi was looking "fine", which made the girl shift in her sit and cross her legs together. Was the digimon purposefully making her awkward? Or was it trying to hit on her? But these thoughts were disturbed by the prospect of the holosuit that Katherine mentioned. She felt cold sweat run down her neck and spine.
"Digimon looking like humans? D-do you mean they're walking in the real world, among us?"
It was a chilling thought. Suddenly, her mind brought up all the conspiracy theories she heard or read about for the past years. Bigfoot, Sasquatch, aliens, reptiloids... Could it have been that they were all true? The girl's eyes shifted under her glasses, back and forth, as she was not sure what to do with this revelation... Everything about this world seemed to have an intention of making her question reality. From enemies, to allies, to even the climate. That crimson lightning outside was absolutely sinister.
"I... yeah, I'd love to. Thanks." - the girl said a bit deflated, and would gladly accept any food given, even though without much appetite. But she needed to eat and she knew it. Witchmon was not particularly talented at cooking because of her hands, and digimon food was... weird anyway.
"Say... I've been wondering... For how long have you been here? How did you meet with Jazz?"
Yomi wondered how and why would a digimon look after a helpless human like that. Well, Kathy looked far from helpless. She was confident, strong, and well-dressed. Hardly a survivor down to her last rations. She was prepared. And the girl with the broken glasses wondered what was so different between the two of them. Why did Jazz stick around to help, while Cano did not?
Why would someone who can turn into a gryphon bother with a human anyway?

The disappointment was shared. Katherine didn’t like the idea of people living in a place like that either. Even if the most advanced technologies still hadn’t reached the island (or at least they hadn’t when she was there), she still considered some historic places were better left untouched. On the other hand, she felt happy about being able to debate about something like this with someone; most of the times people wouldn’t be interested in these types of topics.
A short giggle escaped the raven-haired girl. Yomi sounded like one of those people from alien related shows who throw weird conspiracy theories. “Well, yes. I have seen some holosuited digimon in the past. They try to act like regular human beings but most of the times they have trouble to do so. I guess it’s only natural.” She then decided to add something else, maybe to bring some tranquility to her peer. “But don’t worry, it’s not like everyone around has a digimon. I think only some few of us are chosen to come to this world.” Hopefully, that would lessen the fear of talking to a digimon under disguise the girl might have from now on. But… probably it wouldn't.
Accepting having dinner was probably the best thing Yomi had done for Jazz today. The digimon seemed genuinely glad to finally get some food. Katherine opened her backpack once again, taking out a sort of six-pack of something that looked like noodles in a cup. The girl detached three of the packages, giving one to Jazz, one to Yomi, and keeping one to herself. “These are Whitewater noodles. We bought them in Whitewater City; it’s a beachside city not too far from the Dark Area. Definitely much nicer.” Her index finger over her lower lip, the green-eyed attempted to explain what kind of food this was. “I think this tastes a lot like ramen, just maybe more… tropical? I wouldn’t know how to explain that twist of taste. I figured you would want to eat something that didn’t taste much different from Human World food.” While she continued speaking, she passed a cluster of silver-colored fruits to the Chohakkaimon, after taking a couple of these for herself. Jazz’s eyes glimmered upon receiving them. She loved those.
“Would you like one of these too?” The girl asked Yomi, extending the plantain to her. “They’re called Metal Bananas. I like them, but they don’t taste nothing like regular bananas, I must warn you.” It would be rude to not offer one to her peer, even if she knew she probably wouldn’t accept it. “We should put our noodles under the heat of these sticks. Luckily, they need no water or anything else.”
While they got ready to eat, Katherine answered Yomi’s question. The first one was… kind of a question she had asked before. But it made sense, it was probably not easy to understand how time operated inside of this world. “Well, as I said before, it is not easy to measure. I would say I’ve spent around three months inside this world. But only the last week inside of the Dark Area. We were supposed to be looking for someone.”
“My brothers and I stole from Jasso the first day she arrived into this world.” Jazz decided to answer the second part of Nobuhiko’s inquiry. Ugh. That was probably not doing good for a first impression, was it? Luckily, the hog would expand that first sentence a bit. “We were a band that stole meaningless stuff from passers-by and operated inside of a town at the middle of the desert. We then sold them to local merchants and used the money to buy food for homeless digimon who had no one to take care of them.” Well, that was a bit better.
“I understand stealing is always bad, and I'm sure Jazz understands that now too. However, their intentions weren't bad. They stole my digivice and I was really angry. When I went to their hideout to look for my gadget they were in the middle of a fight with an enemy band who was about to kill them. One thing led to another and I ended up helping Jazz and her brothers. It is a long story, but it was like we knew we were meant to be together.” A warm smile gave an end to the curly-haired teenager’s explanation. The story was too long to tell every detail, but hopefully, that would be enough for Yomi. If it wasn’t, she could always ask further.

Katherine's answer did not bring peace to Yomi at all.
In fact, she just confirmed that some people in the real world could be these... creatures in disguise. She wondered how many. Who they were. Were they in positions of power? Was human world secretly manipulated by aliens? That did not sound unlikely now. But... it was also a bit too much to wrap up around one's head for a day. So, Yomi just sighed and shook her head. One terrifying thing at a time, please. Or... strange and awkward thing, at least.
Like tropical noodles. The girl blinked a few times, catching her glasses before they'd fall off her nose again.
"Noodles, huh? Didn't think they'd have noodles here. I mean... most digimon I've seen did not have hands to eat them with..." - she said as she held the box in her hands, and eyed the "fruit" handed over to the digimon. The "steel banana" as it was called. It was something Yomi would not try eating... ever. It was too weird and suspicious to try to. Gulping, she brought the box over the burning sticks, to heat it up.
"I don't think eating anything weird around here is a good idea... Who knows what short and long-term effects it has on humans."
Seriously, this world was probably a vault for any scientist or explorer, or adventurer for that matter. Humanity was too old to explore the seas and too young to explore space. And here was a new, brave, and amazing world filled with strange yet familiar creatures, who could talk, understand, and do almost anything a human could! Bar from holding a pen, I guess... - Yomi thought. Actually... why would these creatures need humans anyway? They were the masters of their own world, it seemed. As Yomi listened about how Katherine and Jazz met together, her eyes widened, as she listened with undeniable curiosity. Both amazed and impressed by what the short girl did. Risking herself to save the digimon in question.
"You... fought other digimon? Like... grabbed a pipe and wailed at them? Sugoi..."
Yomi was always quick to find things and qualities admirable in others. It was was simple enough for her to understand. She would have never intervened in a fight between creatures with teeth, claws, and other sharp objects that could tear her to shreds. This girl did. Even though she was so much smaller in size. Yomi smiled.
"You're a real hero, Katherine-san. I doubt I could do that. You said some of us were chosen to come here... Why, though? Who? For what purpose? I don't understand..."
The girl with the broken glasses opened her noodle box, finding a pair of chopsticks there, and starting to eat. She was rather famished after eating weird food for a week. Tropical-flavored noodles were the closest thing to home. Japanese loved odd flavors in drinks and foods, too. She fell silent, as her mind started toying with another question there was no reasonable explanation for.
Why me?

While the group started eating, Yomi and Katherine tackled the subject about Digital World food. That had definitely been one of the most interesting things the Spaniard had found during her travels across this land, and even when some of the dishes she had found were truly appalling, some others were extremely tasty. In particular, Kathrine had had the opportunity to try many different kinds of food, since Jazz would eat almost everything. "I've come to realize a lot of the food that can be found inside of this world is somewhat based on the food we've got in our world. After all, I'm pretty sure this dimension is just an extension of own our reality." Maybe those words were too complicated right now and theorizing about stuff was uncalled for at this particular moment, but it wasn't like Katherine could help it.
"Under that logic, eating anything weird in our world shouldn't be convenient either I guess? Since you don't know what effects it may have." Katherine giggled a bit at her peer's statement. "Just like in the Human World there's stuff that tastes funny, but I haven't found anything that's particularly harmful to us humans." Speaking with Nobuhiko was actually helping Katherine see how familiarized she had gotten with this world.
"Well... Now that you mention it, I did grab a pipe." All of this conversation sure brought back some memories to Katherine, the girl couldn't help but muster a grin around her lips upon remembering all of this. "I used it to ring a giant bell that was around the hideout since I learned that kind of Digimon were heavily affected upon hearing loud ringing sounds like that." It sure was a hasty movement. "That helped Jazz's band to gain some time and run. I don't know if I'm a hero. In all honesty, I felt my body move on its own. I just couldn't leave Jazz and her brothers there to die."
During the rest of that sentence, Yomi had hit the mark when it came for what drove Katherine and Jazz to start their adventure. "Exactly!" Jazz exclaimed, just after chugging on the rest of her noodles. "That's what we're trying to find out. Why? Why are certain humans chosen to come into this world? Who choose them and what's their purpose?" The hog was visibly excited about this topic. "The answer is hidden inside a place somewhere in this huge world: The Drum Sanctuary. That who gathers the five Zoid Gems and takes them to the sanctuary will see all of their questions answered by the Ancient Sage. And that's where we're going!" The Chohakkaimon had now stood up and was pointing to the horizon, looking completely fired up.
"That's the plan. But first, we need to get the gems back." Katherine showed a smile, staring at her partner. Her green eyes then shifted to Yomi."It is an old legend, but we've proved it to be real. That's why we started this trip across this whole land. We need to find the gems and get the answers we're looking for. I couldn't just leave this world without knowing why was I summoned here. My undying curiosity just wouldn't let me."

"Oh... so you do not know either..."
A bit of Yomi was envious about hearing of these plans to collect some gems and get to know all the answers of the universe. It sounded... amazing. Bookworthy even. Like a quest to determine the fate of the universe. There were so many questions to be asked of the Sage, and yet... all Kathy wanted to know was her purpose in this world? It was equally strange and... underwhelming. Yomi looked at the digimon, then back at Katherine, then at the digimon again.
"What are these gems you speak of~ And why does the Sage need them in order to answer all the questions of the Universe? Can it not answer them now?"
Yomi muttered, as she ate her noodles. They felt good, probably the most delicious food she had this week. It was sad though, not knowing. One would think that if there was an entity behind her appearance here, it would have brought her in for someone important. But then again, such existentialism was old news even back at home. Yomi was never religious to believe in a higher power.
"It could be just an accident. An anomaly of some kind. I see no logical reason to send me here. But... I think I can live with not knowing the reasons. I just want outta here."
A curious thought to entertain, as the storm howled and crackled outside, and the only sounds within were the soft burning of the firewood. In the following silence, Yomi felt her mind jumping between the reality here, and the reality back home. It was seven days... But in the Human World, less than a day has passed? Maybe she could find ways of explaining her disappearance to parents... Without getting into too much trouble.
"I'm actually looking forward to my mom kicking my ass after all of this."
At least it would feel like home.

“We don’t.” With a soft shake of her head, Katherine replied. She could assume this might be a little disappointing for Yomi. Up to know, she had been able to answer basically everything the girl had thrown at her. But this was much greater, this was the question that had driven her to the point where she was right now. “But you can be sure we’re going to find out.” She added, keeping her tone of voice as firm as possible. “I am sure he could answer them now. The thing is he’s sleeping.” Jazz decided to answer the brunette’s question herself. Their peer seemed to still have a lot of questions regarding this whole matter. If Yomi was willing to hear, they would explain everything. It wasn’t a bad idea to tackle this topic right now, after all, they were still eating and it was a good story to tell in a moment like this. “There are some cases where it might be an accident. However, in my particular case… this digivice appeared at my nightstand, after me having some very strange dream where creatures that I think were digimon appeared.” Katherine rushed to explain. “There has to be something behind all of that, it can’t just be a coincidence.” She made a brief pause, then went on with her thoughts about the matter. “Besides, Jazz was waiting for me and I was looking for her. Why? What is the reason a bond was created between the two of us even before I arrived at this world?” There were too many questions and very few answers. However, since Yomi seemed interested, it was time to tell her everything they knew. While she had a bite on her metal banana, Jazz when ahead and turned towards Yomi. “Listen carefully. This is the legend about the Ancient Sage and the five Zoid Gems.”From there, Katherine and Jazz went to tell the whole legend to Yomi, trying to not forget any details, trying to keep it as accurate as possible, just like when Reiki told the legend to them. It was the second time they told this story, only after telling it to Akemi and Anzu. Hopefully, they were getting better at it. Jazz helped Katherine to recall the details she might have missed and the tamer did the same with her partner. When they were done, Yomi would know everything she needed to know about the Zoid Gems. What would someone like her think about all of this?

Yomi stopped eating for a moment, as the digimon shifted closer, in order to tell her tale.
She and her human friend added one to another, sometimes even talking in unison, like close friends or siblings would. They really are linked in some way, aren't they... - Yomi thought to herself, as she listened to the story. It was like that of old japanese ballads and myths, with a hero, a quest, an ancient artifact, and a conniving villain that needed to be defeated at the end. Perhaps it was not what really happened, but recorded by someone who put it into a story familiar to the Japanese ear. Or, perhaps, the story was a reflection of their own world, as Katherine mentioned before.
So now... she's on a quest to find the gems of power, and bring it back to the Drum place... just like Sage did. And she thinks that the legend is true...
After the story was over, Yomi felt two pairs of eyes on her. Silently wandering what she was thinking about the story. The girl had a thought, or two... but these thoughts were born of many things. Indecisiveness and cowardice, some might have called them, but in her mind, it was... caution. Her week in this place made her cautious about everything. Made her ask questions. And there were... many questions to be asked with this tale.
"It's a wonderful story..." - the girl with the broken glasses said, as her glasses were becoming a bit foggy. She took them off and wiped them against the edge of her sleeve.
"But... is it real? I mean... if it is, then..."
Yomi did not know how to put it properly, without bringing her host down or sounding inappropriately. Still, she chose to speak her mind, at the end.
"Then there are 5 artifacts of great power... In human world, humans crave power all the time. Digimon probably crave it too. From what I've seen, they're not too different from us. If you will find all those gems, would it not be dangerous? Someone else would want them too. They could be waiting for you near the Drum place, just like the Mystic did with Sage. If they succeed, all that power could end up in the wrong place... And even if it does not... Are you sure this Sage will use it for good? The one he sacrificed himself for could no longer be alive... Or be with someone else..."
Yomi was skeptical of things... Absolute power corrupted absolutely. In her mind, this story had too many potential tragic endings. And she was scared her new friend would find her doom in one of them.
"Maybe the gems were initially scattered for a reason... So nobody could find them in one place... And find ways to abuse them."

The story went on for so long that Jazz and Katherine had already finished their meal. It was not a short story, as they had warned before starting. However, Yomi seemed to even be musing about the whole matter, so it seemed like it wasn’t boring for her. Of course, they were willing to listen to their thoughts, since she had been the one who inquired further into this matter.
As it was to be expected, there were more questions coming their way. The teenager was even throwing some very logical points of view regarding the situation, that would let the duo to explain everything a bit better.
“It is real.” Jazz nodded, immediately. “We know this because we have seen and touched four of those gems up until now. We had gathered them by traveling across the Digital World.” Katherine added, in case Yomi was asking herself why were they so sure. Actually, the girl with glasses reached a logical conclusion, and even mentioned something that had happened to them already.
“We actually know about someone who wants them. And that’s why we don’t have those gems anymore. They took them from us.” Lowering her gaze, Katherine replied.
“The Dark Army.” Jazz revealed. “They are an army of powerful digimon who work on the low ends of the Digital World. They are dangerous criminals.” The pig-girl pouted just upon mentioning these guys. “They want the gems too; they are looking to achieve great power by freeing the Ancient Sage from his slumber.”
“I don’t think they’re planning on waiting for us near the Drum Sanctuary, because they don’t know where the Drum Sanctuary is. That’s why we came to the Dark Area, to look for the only digimon that might know how to get there. Our plan was getting to him before the Dark Army; if they don’t know where the Drum Sanctuary is, it doesn’t matter if they have the gems, they still can’t use them."
“And that gives us time to take them away from them.” Jazz winked an eye at Yomi. From her point of view, it was a smart move, since they knew that, at the moment, they weren’t ready to beat the Dark Army.
Katherine then tackled another of Yomi's comment, making sure they didn't leave anything uncovered. “The possibility of The Traveler being dead is real, and we’re aware of that. That doesn’t change things. Even if we would like to help her be reunited with The Ancient Sage, our main goal is to free the sage so he can give us some answers. And, of course, to avoid the Dark Army from getting there first. What they want to get from freeing The Ancient Sage is a secret to us, but we’re sure they’re not up to anything good. They probably just want to unlock all the energy from the gems to enhance their power.”
“You’re not really understanding the concept.” Jazz giggled a bit at Yomi’s final worlds. “You’re speaking about this as if we could help it.” She was right, they couldn’t. “If the consequences of getting there and freeing The Ancient Sage were to be negative, we will deal with that once we do it.” The hog will sigh to gather the rest of her thoughts. “Undying Curiosity is not something you can control. You can’t fight the need of knowing things. Even if there exists the chance of the outcome of this being dangerous or harmful to us, we just can’t stay still knowing there are answers there and doing nothing to get to them.”
If the brunette shifted her gaze back to Katherine, she would find the green-eyed shrugging nonchalantly. “I can’t say she’s wrong.”
And she wasn’t. The worries Yomi was showing were real. They made perfect sense. That didn’t change a single thing. Whether the Ancient Sage was a bad guy planning on doing something evil with that power, or the world wasn’t ready to behold the power of the Zoid Gems all reunited, that place had answers, and they had to go there and get them. They would deal with the consequences after they had them. That’s what Undying Curiosity was all about.

"A ... Dark Army?"
Gee, if that did not sound ominous. Suddenly, the companionship of Katherine and her friend started to sound a lot less safe than it used to be. Because nobody mentioned a Dark Army being after her. The digimon Yomi met so far were rugged, but more or less friendly. She could not imagine what a criminal digimon could do... to someone small, weak, and squishy like herself. Who had nothing to defend herself with. Suddenly the desire to get out of her has gotten a lot more stronger. Yomi let out a nervous chuckle, scratching behind her head.
"Well uh... good to know. I'll just... hope that you'll get to that digimon you speak of faster than they would. And that they're not trailing us somehow..." - the girl gave a wary look towards the exit. Though, with the storm being as powerful as it was, she hoped that whatever imaginary or real pursuers were there would not trace them here. At least for now.
Yomi remained silent as the pink digimon kept prattling about this "Undying Curiosity" that kept driving them somehow. In the humble opinion of a girl with broken glasses and absolutely nothing to rely on aside from other peoples' kindness, that kind of curiosity was better off dead... Before it got Katherine and her friend killed. But then again... it was one of the things that made the girl special, didn't it? Especially in contrast to Yomi. She was just a scared lost girl. Neither strong enough to hold her own, nor knowledgeable enough. And certainly not curious enough beyond common sense. Fate was offering her a brave new world to explore... and she was turning the offer down.
And the worst part of it was... that she was conscious of that.
Wrapping her arms around her knees, she sat, quietly, poking with a twig against the fire, which was slowly getting dimmer. Sleeping sounded like a good idea right now.
"I hope you get the answers you're looking for, Katherine-san, Jazz-san. It would make for a great story. I'm... just... I don't think I can help you, much. All I have is this useless thing."
With that, Yomi pulled out her own digivice, or detector, or whatever the name of it was. Such an angry-looking thing, with its googly eyes and a tiny mouth for buttons. Frustrated, the girl tried to lob it into the fire. But... it failed. The device just stuck to her hand, as if covered with sticky glue. She tried it again, but with the other hand. The detector easily moved from one hand to another, but did not let go otherwise. It's tiny frowny face was getting... frownier.
"Huh?" - Yomi hummed, flailing her hand a bit. It won't budge!
