Sometimes, the one thing you truly need in life is a big change, to give you a fresh new perspective or just to liven things up. For Kohaku, that one big change came in the form of entirely new abilities to better compliment his athletic skills. But how did he suddenly get these skills, and learn how to use them efficiently? Well, it all started on a day that was like any other, a cloudy yet nice day outside of Rosewood.
It was a day off from Rosewood Academy, so Kohaku the Falcomon and his sister Ruri the Biyomon were just taking it easy, sitting next to each other against a tree outside of the city and trying to make the most out of this nice day as much as possible. Ruri turned her head to the right to face her brother, only to find that his left wing was slowly started to fade from existence. "Um... brother...?" Ruri spoke up, unsure how to even process the situation.
"Hm? What is it, Ruri?" Kohaku asked, turning his own head before noticing that his wing was now completely gone. "AAH, WHAT THE HECK?!"
"What's happening?!"
"I-I don't know...!" Kohaku frantically responded. He poked where his missing wing would be with his visible claw... sure enough, it still felt like it was there. "My wing is still there... but it just turned invisible? Hm..." Kohaku had an idea. He closed his eyes and focused real hard... and just like that, Kohaku disappeared entirely!
"...brother? Are you still there?"
"Yes, I am," Kohaku said, his now invisible beak forming a smirk before he became visible once more. "I can't believe it... I can turn invisible at will!" Sure, Kohaku should be asking "why and how is this possible" right about now, but Kohaku was still a kid in the end, and an ability like this was just downright cool for him!
"We should let Mr. Owen know! Maybe you have more powers you don't know about, brother!"

"Whoooaaa, that's so cool! Are you some kind of ninja, Mr. Falcomon?" An inquisitive, childlike voice called out, revealing that the two siblings weren't actually alone. Just a few feet away from the siblings, a Morphomon was casually enjoying a lollipop that was almost big as his head while he watched the Falcomon and Biyomon discover Kohaku's new ability.
"I know a ninja, too, (lick) although Mr. Kaito's usually too busy to play with me (lick). But that's okay (lick), since I know that he's got a lot of important grown-up stuff to take care of (lick)." Rush rambled off between licks of his lollipop.
The little butterfly Digimon continued to just stand there and watch the two siblings while he enjoyed his candy (randomly alternating between licking the large piece of candy and attempting to gnaw on it with his tiny mouth), which when combined with his teddy bear-sized stature could be interpreted as being either incredibly creepy or incredibly adorable.

These were essentially the faces that Kohaku and Ruri had as they screamed at the top of their lungs, utterly oblivious to the Morphomon's existence until this very moment. Hell, the two siblings' souls were just about ready to leave their physical bodies behind and ascend to the afterlife, purely because they were so surprised. The Morphomon in question asked Kohaku if he was a ninja. "You're asking me that? You're the one who just appeared out of nowhere!"
"I thought my Digicore was about to give up..." Ruri muttered in between taking deep breaths. Morphomon's accidental scare was seemingly more effective than he initially thought.
"Anyways... no, I'm not a ninja. I'm more of an archer... being a ninja would've been cool, but I'm a bit too round for that sort of thing, if you get what I'm saying." While Kohaku did think highly of himself overall, he still had a bit of a self-perception problem when it came to his big belly. It wasn't that big, but he was still noticeably more round than other Falcomons normally were. Hence why Kohaku decided that his original plan to train in the art of the ninja didn't really work out for him. The Morphomon would then go on to talk about how he knew a ninja named Kaito, though this Kaito seemed to always be a bit too busy to play with him. He would alternate between licking his oversized lollipop and attempting to bite into it during his sentence, leaving Ruri to think it was super adorable while Kohaku thought it was super creepy. This kid had to be even younger than Kohaku and Ruri were, and they were quite young!
Then, it was like a light switch flipped inside Ruri's little bird brain. "Hey, Brother, I have an idea... Grandpa once told me you wanted to be a ninja. Was he right?"
"Well... yes, I did, but-"
"Great! Then let's go and ask Kaito to train you! You'll be a way better ninja than an archer, I'm sure!" Ruri then turned around to face the Morphomon. "Is your ninja friend here with you? Can you take us to him please?"
"I'd rather not go and annoy a ninja that's busy, Ruri..."

"Appeared out of nowhere? I was right here the whole time, though..." Rush asked in confusion, tilting his head. The little Morphomon wasn't sure why the two siblings were so surprised, since it wasn't his fault they didn't see him standing there.
Eh, it wasn't important, so his child-like brain simply let it go and moved on. Apparently the Falcomon wasn't actually a ninja, but he had wanted to be one in the past, so his Biyomon sister asked if Rush counld introduce them to Kaito and ask him to train the Falcomon to become a ninja.
"Hmmmm... okay!" Rush agreed without hesitation. He looked around to see if his family was nearby, but it seemed like they had wandered off without him. Or had he wandered off without them? He couldn't remember...
"Nyu... where'd they go?" Rush quietly asked himself, frowning slightly as he started racking his brain. What was he supposed to do if he got lost? Oh, now he remembered! The Morphomon took three, increasingly dramatic breaths (that caused his cheeks to puff up) before spitting an energy pellet straight up into the air. The pellet soared upwards for a few seconds, before exploding in mid-air like fireworks.
Now he just had to wait for his family members to catch up, so he decided to go back to enjoying his candy while he waited. Rush cooldowns: -Fairy Bullet: Morphomon spits a blue energy pellet from his mouth at an enemy. 1 post cooldown. (0/1)

"Wait, you were?" Ruri asked as she and Kohaku looked at each other with incredulous expressions. Rush was seriously with them this whole time? How come neither of them had noticed him before now? He made absolutely no sounds when he walked or floated up, and he didn't have much of a presence either. They were just as confused about the whole thing as Rush was at the moment.
When Ruri asked Rush if they could meet his ninja friend Kaito, Rush had actually agreed to bring them to him! Perfect! Things seemed to be all well and good... well, at least until Rush began to look around and realized that he had gotten separated from his group and got himself lost. Kohaku and Ruri both sweat-dropped at that revelation... it seemed like they weren't going to be finding Kaito that easily after all.
Rush then seemed to have an idea. He shot an energy pellet from his mouth up into the air, which exploded in mid-air like a mini firework. The siblings caught on relatively quickly; that firework acted as a sort of emergency flare, so all they had to do was wait for his family to arrive, which would hopefully include Kaito along with them.
Time went by, though, and Kohaku was getting more and more impatient. He crossed his wings and tapped his foot as the seconds went by... and Ruri wasn't having a good time just waiting, either. It seemed like Rush's family would never arrive. Then, an idea popped into her little bird brain. "Brother, maybe I can get us there with a spell! I know just the one, as well!"
"Wait, a spell-!?"
It was too late. Ruri had muttered the teleportation incantation (which basically included the name of the person she wanted to go to... in this case, Kaito,) and in a flash, all three of them were teleported somewhere else. The good news is that the spell worked, and they were at Kaito's location. The bad news is... they were twenty feet in the air above Kaito.
"AAAAAAAAAA!"
As if it were a silly cartoon, both Kohaku and Ruri would start frantically moving around in mid air to avoid falling before comedic-ally falling down to the ground, right on top of Kaito if he failed to move out of the way in time with a loud THUD! Both birds would then be found lying on the ground, their eyes spinning round and round dizzily as they both tried to recover from Ruri's spell hiccup.

Ever since Rush had first wandered off, Hana had whipped herself into a panicked frenzy as she, Data, and Kaito desperately searched for him. Rush's impromptu flare had caught their attention but they hadn't even gotten halfway to the location of the flare before Rush and the two bird siblings ended up teleporting directly above them and falling to the ground in a panic. Rush was lucky enough that his biology allowed him to gently float to the ground, while his companions weren't so fortunate.
The moment Rush's tiny feet touched the ground, Hana quickly ran over and scooped the little guy into her arms and hugged him tightly. "AHHH! Rush, my baby! Are you okay?! I was so worried about you! Don't run off like that!"
Rush giggled in her arms as he returned the bear hug. "It's okay Mama. I'm right here!"
Meanwhile, Kohaku and Ruri (once they regained their senses), would find themselves being stared down at by Data and Kaito staring at them with suspicion while the Tuwarmon mad his thoughts known. "And who are these miscreants? Attempted kidnappers?"

It took a few moments for Kohaku and Ruri to regain their senses after a sudden and fast fall like the one they just had. They pulled themselves up to a kneeling position as they groaned, before they looked up and saw a Hagurumon and a Zuwarmon looking over them in a very intimidating manner. Both of their eyes widened as they began sweating bullets... if they were trying to be intimidating, they were doing WAY too good of a job doing so.
The Zuwarmon then asked if the two were attempted kidnappers, since they did fall down along with Rush, who was currently being coddled by a human he called "Mama." Kohaku and Ruri both gasped as they went pure-white like in an anime. If they were suspected of kidnapping Rush, who KNOWS what these two scary Digimon would do to them?!
"NONONONONO, y-you have the wrong idea!" Ruri pleaded as she held her wings up in a defensive manner.
"M-My sister's right, sir," Kohaku added, also sounding beyond terrified. "This Morphomon just came up to us out of the blue and she tried a new spell to teleport us to you but you can see how that went!"
"We're just kids who go to school here, we're not kidnappers, please don't hurt us!"
"And the Morphomon said he knew a ninja named Mr. Kaito who could help train me to become a ninja as well, he agreed to bring us to him, we're innocent, I swear!"
...yep, these two were definitely children, alright. Children who were deathly afraid of being accused of kidnapping and getting hurt by the mean older Digimon thanks to a misunderstanding, and they weren't ones to hide that fear either.

"That... honestly sounds like something Rush would get into, actually." Data admitted with a sigh, as he watched Kohaku and Ruri essentially beg for mercy. It seemed that he and Kaito had clearly jumped the gun here. "Alright, Kaito. Ease up on the murder aura. These are just kids." " Yeah, these are my new friends!" Rush chimed in, floating out of Hana's arms and landing next to the terrified siblings. "They really wanted to meet a ninja!""My apologies then, Young Master." Kaito humbly said to Rush, his intimidating aura immediately dissipating as he knelt in front of Kohaku and Ruri and assumed a dogeza position. "Please forgive me for my rash accusation, young ones. I should not have let my suspicion cloud my judgement and cause me to act in such a shameful manner."
The prostrating Tuwarmon, however, would soon find himself bowled over as Hana quickly ran over to Kohaku and Ruri and tearfully hugged them both. "Thank you, thank you, thank you for bring Rush back! We've been worried sick ever since he wandered off!" "Well, so much for making a good first impression." Data muttered to himself, his gears hitching slightly as he spoke. "We've certainly bungled this one up good."

Kohaku and Ruri started to calm down once the Hagurumon figured that the avian siblings were in fact telling the truth, with Rush even coming in to defend them, calling them his new friends. "I don't think I'd call us friends just yet, since we just met and all," Kohaku said, "but we're telling the truth, that is what happened."
"Yeah... please don't punish us!"
Well, it seemed that the misunderstanding had been cleared up, at least. The Tuwarmon, who was revealed to be the ninja Kaito that they were looking for, bent over in front of the Falcomon and Biyomon to apologize for his behavior. "Um, it's alright, mister, really," Ruri insisted as she rubbed the side of her head. "I'm just glad you don't think we kidnapped him anymore."
"Imagine how angry Mr. Owen would've been if we had gotten arrested for kidnapping," Kohaku said. "He'd probably kick us out of school."
"He wouldn't do that, Brother... I hope."
Then out of nowhere, the human girl with Rush ran up to both Kohaku and Ruri and hugged them both, crying and thanking them for bringing Rush back to her. "My feathers! She's ruffling my feathers!" Kohaku cried as Hana continued to hug the bird brother and sister. Hana would note that their feathers were beyond soft, with Ruri's being softer than Kohaku's. It would feel like she was hugging two literal fluffy pillows.
Once the hug ended, Kohaku turned over to Kaito, as he had something he still needed to ask the ninja. "You are Kaito, right? Rush's ninja friend? Look, um... I was wondering if... if you would teach me the ways of the ninja. I know I don't exactly look ninja material but I would still like to at least try. Will you teach me?"

Kohaku's request actually surprised Kaito, the Tuwarmon quirking an eye as he got back to his feet. Kaito would take a few minutes to walk around the Falcomon, gently prying Hana away from him and Ruri before examining Kohaku form various angles and coming to a decision. "Hm, your physique should not be too much of an issue. The body can be trained, and your fitness can be improved with proper exercise. The main question is if you have the resolve for this. The lifestyle of a ninja requires great dedication and discipline. If you still wish to be trained as a ninja, I will have to give you a test in order to see if you have what it takes."
With that, the Tuwarmon walked towards Hana and knelt before her. "My Lady, I humbly ask for your permission to temporarily leave your side in order to test and potentially teach this young student."
"Oh, um, sure. Do what you need to do, I guess?" Hana answered, visibly flustered by the ninja's behavior. She was feeling rather embarrassed by Kaito's behavior, which was causing a bit of a scene as various residents of Rosewood were staring at the odd scene.
Kaito nodded, returning to his feet once more as he spoke to Kohaku again. "Meet me at the Rosewood Trailmon station at dawn, and we will leave to begin your test. For now, I must begin preparations."
The Tuwarmon quickly threw down a smoke bomb, using the brief smokescreen to seemingly vanish into thin air. Hana and her partners would stare at the spot where Kaito had been just a few moments ago, before Data would voice his opinion on what had just transpired. "I still don't quite get that guy."

Kohaku had to admit, he felt a bit uncomfortable with Kaito observing him at various angles like that. He felt like he was being silently judged about every aspect of his appearance. The Falcomon wanted to make a joke about how Kaito was checking him out, but he greatly wanted the ninja's respect, so he managed to keep his beak shut and not make such a crappy joke. Eventually Kaito spoke up. He explained that Kohaku's physique wouldn't be a problem, but wanted to know if he had the resolve to be a ninja in the first place. Kohaku had to think for a moment... DID he have the resolve? "I... don't know if I do, at least not yet. I want to give it my all, though. Being a ninja may be the best way to protect others... others like my sister." Kaito would then instruct Kohaku to meet him at the Rosewood Trailmon station at dawn, after he had made the necessary preparations. Right after, he threw a smokebomb on the ground and vanished. While the others were confused by this disappearance, Ruri included, Kohaku simply felt even more determined to become a ninja after that. He clenched his wing and held it close to his chest as he thought to himself, Soon... I'll be able to do that.
Morning came sooner than Kohaku was expecting. His eyes slowly opened as he rose his head up, taking a quick look out the window... the sun was just beginning to rise. Perfect. He got up, took a quick bath, brushed his feathers and soon enough, he was ready to meet Kaito. But before he left, he took a quick look into Ruri's dorm room, seeing his Biyomon sister sleep peacefully in bed. It put a smile on the Falcomon's face.
"Wish me luck, Ruri," Kohaku quietly said before he headed out.
As he walked to the Trailmon station, Kohaku decided he'd try out his new invisibility move. He had been practicing it all day yesterday, and now he felt like he got the hang of it. He went invisible as he got closer to the station, so that Kaito wouldn't be able to see and (hopefully) hear him. And once Kohaku actually got to the station, he'd watch Kaito stand there waiting for a bit until he would asking something along the lines of "where is he?"
And that's when Kohaku would become visible once again, standing right beside Kaito. "I'm right here; didn't ya see me?"

As dawn arrived, Kaito would be waiting at the entrance to the Trailmon station like he said he would be, standing in the open with a duffel bag at his feet. The Tuwarmon routinely scanned the area in order to see if Kohaku would show up, but the fact that he couldn't see the Falcomon (who was invisible at the time) slowly made the ninja start to feel impatient. Kaito would tap his foot as he waited, until the moment that Kohaku finally made himself visible.
The Falcomon's sudden appearance did manage to surprise Kaito, as he was unaware the Falcomon had such an ability. Kaito was not someone who expressed their emotions easily, though, so the only visible sign of his surprise would be his eyes widening. "Interesting. True invisibility is a useful skill for a ninja to have, although I should remind you that not all teachers would be so forgiving about being kept waiting. However, I will let it slide this time, so long as you are more mindful in the future. Now, come along."
With that blunt command, Kaito scooped up his bag and beckoned his student to follow as he started walking towards the Trailmon they'd be taking to the testing site, an elderly Kettle-type Trailmon with a metal mustache. Once the teacher and student duo were onboard, the Trailmon would pull out of the station and begin chugging along towards the Server Woods. As they traveled, Kaito would eye his companion and tell him, "We have approximately an hour before we reach our destination. If you have any questions to ask of me before we arrive, I suggest you do so now."

Kohaku could tell that Kaito was getting impatient, as was evident by the way the Tuwarmon was tapping his foot repeatedly. Kohaku didn't really want to keep him waiting much longer, but he was already committed to the prank, so he was going to see it through to the end. The Falcomon did notice the duffel bag that Kaito had, though. He was tempted to take a peak inside to see what was in it, but he felt that doing so would've revealed his presence prematurely.
When Kohaku did eventually make himself re-appear, he could see the surprise in Kaito's eyes. He was hoping that he could've at least made the ninja visibly jump, but Kohaku supposed that Kaito was just too reserved for such a thing. He told Kohaku that true invisibility was useful for a ninja, but also warned him that other teachers wouldn't let such a thing like this slide. "Y-Yes, sir... sorry, sir," Kohaku said as he bowed, his instincts from when Owen would scold him kicking in. "I've just been practicing that ability and wanted to see if it would work on someone like you... plus it was too good of a joke to pass up!"
Kaito would then lift up the duffel bag and board the elderly Trailmon that was stationed there, with Kohaku not too far behind. Once they sat down and the Trailmon began to move, Kaito looked over at Kohaku and informed him that they'd be arriving at their destination within an hour, prompting Kohaku to ask any questions that he may have. "Where are we going, exactly? I thought that we were gonna train in the forest or something... also, what's in that duffel bag?"

As Kohaku asked where the duo was going, Kaito would do his best to answer his potential student's questions. "We are indeed heading to the forest. Specifically, a clearing that often serves as a training ground for members of my clan. I had to send a message to our Grandmaster for permission to bring you to the training ground, as only members of the Golden Sun are usually allowed to train there."
Kaito reached down to his duffel bag and opened it up to reveal that it was filled with pre-packaged rations and sealed boxes of throwing stars and kunai knives. "This bag contains items that will be used during our training sessions. One should always make sure to properly prepare for a trip, after all."
After an hour, the Trailmon would come to a stop and tell his passengers that this was their stop: a small station that was little more than a crude wooden platform and stairs that allowed the duo to disembark. A short walk through the woods would bring the Tuwarmon and Falcomon to the edge of a clearing that was clearly the training ground Kaito mentioned earlier. The clearing had several wooden targets set up, as well as a set of straw dummies. There was also a small wooden table covered by an umbrella far off at the very edge of the clearing, where Kaito would set the duffel bag he was carrying. As the Tuwarmon pulled out the boxes of throwing weapons and organized them, he would explain the nature of their current location to Kohaku. "This is Training Ground #1, designed for training beginners such as yourself. Prepare yourself to be pushed to your limits, as we will begin your test shortly."

According to Kaito, the two of them were heading to a special clearing in the forest that his clan used as a training ground. He mentioned having to ask his Grandmaster for permission since only members of the Golden Sun clan were allowed to use it. "You went through that just to train some kid you found on the street?" Kohaku asked, unsure what to say. "I... that's very kind of you, Kaito-sensei... to try and arrange something like that for me. I promise that I won't let you down." Kohaku was usually the flamboyant and cocky type, but he wasn't used to responding to genuine kindness like this quite yet. His sudden lack of eye contact would get Kaito to understand this relatively quickly.
As for what was in the duffel bag, that turned out to be an assortment of throwing stars, kunai knives, and pre-packaged food rations for their training sessions. Kohaku was impressed by the weapons, but what really got his attention were the rations. A bit of drool could be seen coming from down his beak, as the poor Falcomon had just realized at that moment that he had missed breakfast. He wouldn't say anything about it to Kaito, though, provided he didn't already catch on... these rations were supposed to be for the training sessions. He could always wait until lunch, he figured.
It was going to be quite the long hour, so to pass the time Kohaku decided to initiate some small talk with the ninja, who was being oddly quiet. "You're in a 'clan' you said, right? The Golden Sun?" Kohaku asked. "That must be fun. Like a big family with members that you can always rely on... it's just been me, my sister and my gramps for a while, so I don't really know what having a big family is like."
Memories of his grandfather, Ouwa, then played through Kohaku's head. Then came the memory of his death, on the Archipelago. "...well, I guess it's just me and Ruri now, actually," Kohaku added in a melancholy tone, before proceeding to be as quiet as Kaito himself for the rest of the train ride. It wouldn't take a genius to piece together what had happened to Kohaku's grandfather.
That silence continued even as the train ride ended and the pair got off at their stop. Kohaku's mind just couldn't help but replay memories of his grandfather or fantasies of having a normal family as he followed Kaito through the forest, before they made it to the clearing. Several wooden targets, straw training dummies, and a table with an umbrella on it would be all that was in the clearing, but Kohaku was still impressed.
Okay, I gotta make sure that I impress Kaito-sensei... I'll get 100% first try every time, no matter what he throws at me! Kohaku thought to himself, putting on a confident face. To put it bluntly, this line of thinking would either be his saving grace or his downfall.
As Kaito organized the stars and kunais, he explained that they were in "Training Grounds #1," one designed for beginners, before warning Kohaku that he would be pushed to his limits. "No such thing as limits, I say. I'm ready to take on whatever ya throw, Kaito-sensei!"
