In a forest of the Eastern Timberlands so barren but for trees that it has no text to mark it on a map, there was a tunnel dug beneath one especially thick, massive tree. This tree was chosen for its evenly-spaced branches that made it reasonably climbable to most digimon and branches so thick that three humans could stand comfortably side-by-side. This was how a sentry post was hastily but effectively built on a branch just below the forest canopy, giving its occupier comfortable space, 360-degree wooden cover, and a bird's eye view of much of the forest. However, the sentry on duty at the moment, Tsumemon, was perfectly capable of levitating and so instead hovered around the tree, ever-alert for any sign of Troopmon. This was the last hideout of Commandramon's small resistance force against their settlement's invaders, a gang guilty of such crimes as extortion, racketeering, and overall intimidation and oppression of the locals.
Meanwhile, in the tunnel dug under the tree, space was much more constrained; it all went into one room only, which itself was about 12 feet by 12, though it wasn't quite a perfect square. Space had to be conserved by one corner being reserved strictly for storage - various weapons, supplies, foods, and personal possessions - while most of the rest was sleeping space for various rookie and in-training digimon. The only real furniture in the tunnel was a square table on which several maps and documents, many of which with marks added after their original creation, sat. Though it was late at night, a Demimeramon kindly used her own body to provide light for quite an emotionally charged meeting around the table through which no one could sleep.
While levitating beside the table, a Hagurumon stuttered in response to the question he'd been asked, "Y-yes, I posted the notice in everywhere I could find, and I d-d-don't think I was f-followed. It's all over the Timberlands." Hagurumon was referring to notices, posters, that attempted to make the rest of the region aware of this little town's occupiers and called on the kindness of readers for material assistance.
"I'm still a skeptic." When the Commandramon spoke, every digimon in the room looked to him; his deep, authoritative voice commanded attention, even if his calm, albeit displeased demeanor did not. "Begging for help doesn't just tell Devidramon we're still alive; it also signals our weakness. Besides, why would anyone care about this little speck of the forest?"
"War has always been about who takes on the more unacceptable loss 'Captain.'" The tone with which Renamon referred to Commandramon as 'Captain' insinuated sarcasm, as if she didn't respect this title. "And if you do not pad your numbers, just one more digimon could become an unacceptable loss."
"Is 'war' what we're calling this now? Your role isn't to make suggestions, Renamon. It's to gather information."
"My role is whatever I want it to be if you still want my charity. As it stands, my role is indeed to present you with information you don't have, and it would seem that's exactly what I've done."
"P-please stop!" Hagurumon then intervened between the two, still stuttering over nerves. "Wh-what's the point in arguing? The decision was-was made. So now you just have to wait, r-right?" Both of the squabbling digimon glared at Hagurumon and then at each other. Then Commandramon took a breath and coolly dismissed the cog digimon with a wave of one paw.
"You should go while Devidramon is still away. You wouldn't want to be caught out of the home too long, would you?" This was the truth; though sympathetic to the cause, Hagurumon wanted nothing to do with the fighting. Soon as he finally got the permission, he scurried off out of the tunnel toward home. "And now... it seems we wait."
In another location, in another world, even at a completely different time of day - specifically, after school - 16-year-old Tadayoshi Teppei was walking home along the Shibuya river when he noticed four kids wearing the same elite prep school uniform as himself. Unfortunately, it wasn't a social gathering: one of the student was being dangled over the river by their shirt by two others while the third just watched and seemed to enjoy themselves. This scene was something Tadayoshi could simply not stand; it wasn't necessarily out of a sense of nobility that he decided to intervene but in defense of his own sense of justice. Tadayoshi shouted, "Hey! What the heck are you doing, you morons? Three on one?" indignantly and strode right up to the crew, all fear for his own safety replaced by righteous anger.

"Well, today was certainly... interesting," Rebecca was telling her new friend Adrian Boriker as they were heading out of school for the day, now walking along the Shibuya River. Their first hour class took a turn for the weird when a Botamon suddenly hatched during class, where it was then revealed that MULTIPLE students at the school had Digimon.
"Yeah, you're telling me," Adrian responds, "although I feel like that Eito kid knew more than he was revealing..."
"Can we go get some food now or something?" A rather loud voice called out from Adrian's Digivice.
"Alright, Shoutmon... Rebecca, you wanna come?"
Before Rebecca could respond, however, she noticed a disturbance by the river: there was one kid being held over the river by his shirt by two other kids. Adrian and Rebecca looked at each other, nodded, and went down to confront them, joining another teenager that was already there doing just that.
"Hey!" Adrian yelled at the bullies. "What's the big idea, huh?!"
"You all think you're so funny making him suffer like that?!"

"Huh?" Tadayoshi was quite surprised to look around himself and find a couple of allies had materialized around himself. Even better, they were a couple of older kids who each looked like they weren't afraid of a little action! That last bit worked out especially well for Tadayoshi, seeing as he strongly hoped he wouldn't have to get his own hands dirty. What do you know? I guess doing the right thing just pays off on its own.
That's not how it worked out. The biggest of the bunch, the one holding a kid over the river, just switched targets. He threw the kid to one side, and thankfully he both landed on terra firma and had the smarts to run off without hesitation. Then, while the two flunkies each took a position in front of Rebecca and Adrian in order to try and intimidate then and keep them away, the alpha male snagged Tadayoshi by the collar and instead dangled him over the river with as much ease as the kid. And scratch that. The bully took a moment to sneer at the arrogant interloper, but only a moment. After it passed, without warning, he dropped Tadayoshi into the river. "What?" was all he had time to ask in shock before his head went under.
But then the bully backed away and looked scared, like he'd just seen a ghost. In reality, what he'd seen was a disappearing boy. "Wh-where- he's gone!" this got the other two to finally leave Rebecca and Adrian alone so they could themselves stare into the river, wondering what had just become of Tadayoshi.
Tadayoshi was extremely groggy after landing on a hard forest floor, not a smelly river like he had expected. While he struggled to get up and notice his unexpectedly dark, leafy surroundings, though, a little Tsumemon was returning to the tunnel under the tree and sounding the alarm.

Welp, this was officially the dumbest thing that both Adrian and Rebecca had done in their lives. They weren't expecting all three bullies to gang up on the group. Luckily, the first kid managed to get away. The other two "henchmen" tried to go up and intimidate Adrian and Rebecca...
Well, that did not work. The guy who tried to block Rebecca immediately got his arm grabbed and twisted - VERY painfully, before being thrown to the side. Next up, the teenage girl then did a jumping spin kick, kicking the second guy right in the face. If they were smart, they wouldn't try to intimidate her again.
"Wow... that was really cool," Adrian says, stunned by what he just saw Rebecca do. Before anyone could react though, the main bully just suddenly shouted that someone was gone. "Okay, that doesn't sound good..."
And with that, both teens went over to the river to see what the heck is going on. Rebecca then noticed something... "Where's that one kid that was with us?"
"Adrian," A voice came from Adrian's left pocket. He took out a tiny device where the voice was coming from. "Are you at the Shibuya River? That place is one GIANT Digi-Port!"
"What?! So that means..."
"I'm going in," Rebecca says, immediately jumping into the river and going through that same portal.
"Rebecca-! Ugh... you get lost, creep," Adrian angrily tells the main bully before he dives in as well.

The other side of the portal is not exactly a pleasant sight. For one, the forest Adrian and Rebecca ended up in seemed completely empty save the trees, though that was very hard to see because there was very little light except for the little moonlight that made it down below the forest canopy... and the Demimeramon glaring down at the pair of them. In fact, once the pair of Tamers would look around their surroundings, they'd find they were in fact among a great many digimon, including a Renamon, the aforementioned Demimeramon, a band of about half a dozen Missimon, Gomamon, Otamamon, Coronamon, Elecmon, and - facing the pair most directly, Commandramon. It was obvious in their faces they were not happy to see Adrian and Rebecca here, and if it wasn't, then the fact that Commandramon had his weapon raised at the couple was probably a good indicator.
Also notable is the fact that Tadayoshi was also there as part of the circle, though only because his arms were bound behind his back behind the Renamon. "Uh... hi, guys," Tadayoshi greeted them with a sheepish smile and heavy breath. "So, uh... thanks for earlier, I guess?"
There was no time for casual conversation once Commandramon demanded, "Who are you, and why are you here?" At least his tone of voice made it seem like he wasn't looking for a reason to fire on site, but the steadiness with which he held his rifle suggested he was certainly ready to.
"How did... Hey! Kenji! Shoujiro! Did you see-?" The main bully of the bunch turned around only to see the last moments of his buddies' backs disappearing down an alley. Rather than flee, though, the bully knelt down by the side of the river and stared at it as if expecting something to happen. "Hmmmmmm..." Of course, nothing did happen no matter how long he stared, so he had to go home eventually. But it was doubtful this experience would just slip from his mind.

"Ooomph!"
"Ow!"
Both Tamers yelped in pain as they landed on solid ground after jumping into the river portal. The two groaned as they got up to look at their surroundings, with Adrian looking the same, but Rebecca now in her alter-ego, White Wolf. She now had silver hair, a black eyemask, a yellow tanktop, blue denim jacket, white pants and brown boots.
"Okay... and where is this place?" Adrian asked as he got up.
"I think it's-" White Wolf started to say, but was cut off when she was face-to-face with a Demimeramon. Obviously, she was startled and scooted back a bit, before realizing that it wasn't just a Demimeramon looking down at them...
There were a TON of Digimon surrounding them, including but not limited to a Commandramon, Renamon, and loads of various others.
And if THAT wasn't enough, that's when the Digimon from both Tamers decided to get out of their V-Pets. Shoutmon looked as happy as ever. "So, you guys actually deci-" And that's when he noticed the various Digimon surrounding the group. "...what did you drag me into?"
The twins were confused as well. "Er... hello?" Gabumon greeted them awkwardly.
All five newcomers made "o_o" expressions when Commandramon began asking them who they were. Of course, no one initially responded... for a rookie Digimon, Commandramon was scary!

Even though Commandramon's first instinct was to be done with these intruders if they were unresponsive, Renamon's earlier words had stayed his hand. We'll never get outside help if it gets out we destroyed the first strangers to approach - especially if they still might be those who came for that very reason. So he was very conflicted on what to do. Fortunately, he had a cooler head by him.
"They're not enemies. I know all of them, and I wouldn't still be here if they were. That's not to mention Devidramon would never work with humans; most of them are a little too noble to go along with his schemes." Then she shook Tadayoshi a little. "This one doesn't even have any sort of digivice."
"Uh, guys? Whatever your names are? What the heck is going on?" Tadayoshi demanded between the discussion.
As for Commandramon, he bit his lip but then lowered his weapon - though the rest in the circle didn't look any less alert. "Who are you?" he repeated.

Okay, what the hell did we just walk- or rather, fall into? Adrian thought as the various Digimon began talking about Devidramon, or various schemes or whatever.
"How about we call just calm down for a few seconds?" Gabumon said as calmly as he could. "My name is Gabumon. This is my brother, Agumon, and our Tamer, White Wolf."
"And my name's Adrian... and this is my partner Shoutmon."
"Good. Everyone's introduced now. Let's not kill each other anymore, okay?" Thankfully, that wasn't needed, as the Renamon seemed to have a cool head on her and managed to properly defuse the situation.
Tadayoshi looked absolutely confused about everything that was going on right about now. White Wolf decided to try and calm him down a bit. "I think you must've accidentally entered the Digital World through the portal in the river... these creatures are called Digimon."
"Wait a second... you said Devidramon," Agumon says to the Renamon. "Who's that?"

The fact that he claims he doesn't know Devidramon means nothing, Commandramon cautiously reminded himself, Anyone could pretend not to know anything... But outsiders coming to our aid would know. Putting Renamon's assessment and his own together, he concluded, These kids are just in the wrong place at the wrong time. So he waved one paw, which was apparently a command of some sort; all the digimon around him relaxed a little, and the Renamon restraining Yoshi pushed him back into the middle of the circle with the other humans. "This place is dangerous - not the kind of environment for kids like you. Go away before-"
What interrupted Commandramon was a flash of light from right in front of Yoshi that startled the dragonoid and even made him raise his rifle again. The boy himself was pretty startled, too, and jumped back so far that he accidentally bumped into Shoutmon. From there, out of the little light in the air dropped a curious little white machine: a Xros Loader, not that Yoshi could have known its name. Then two new beams of light appeared from out of the device itself, and each one connected to the chest area of both Yoshi and Commandramon. "Uh, guys? Wolf-girl? Shagubumon? I-?" the poor boy couldn't even think of the right question to ask.
As for the Xros Loader, its screen only showed one word: DOWNLOADING... along with a progress bar. It took about ten seconds for the progress bar to fill before flashing, DOWNLOAD COMPLETE and then the next message, XROS LOADER SYNCED TO GENERAL TADAYOSHI TEPPEI AND CORE DIGIMON COMMANDRAMON. The light connecting their chest areas to the device then disconnected and retracted as if it were some sort of cable. Now the rest of the digimon in the circle were neither relaxed nor hostile; they were just utterly stunned.
Especially Commandramon. "How- can it be...?"

As if this situation wasn't chaotic enough, just as Commandramon was telling the "kids" to leave (which Shoutmon would've argued against) suddenly, a giant flash of light just appears in front of the group.
"Aw, what now?!" Agumon yelled, sounding pretty annoyed. The kid, Tadayoshi, even managed to bump into Shoutmon, which surprised him so much that he fell onto the ground face-first, causing his face to be absolutely covered with mud and making Adrian, White Wolf and Agumon laugh at him, with Gabumon helping him up instead.
"Watch where you're going, kid," Shoutmon angrily growled as he got up.
Then the light began to form into what the others recognized as a Digivice... but it was a different model Digivice than the ones Adrian and White Wolf were familiar with.
"What kind of Digivice is that?" Adrian asked.
"It looks like..."
"A Xros Loader."
Both humans looked at Gabumon with a confused expression on their faces.

The sight of the machine made Renamon raise an eyebrow, which for her was an extreme show of surprise and shock. Her tone, however, was more like one of amusement. "Well, well. Seems the good captain has a General."
"Speak plainly, Renamon," Commandramon demanded in return.
So, while Tadayoshi awkwardly apologized for covering the little red guy in mud - then put as much distance between himself and it as he could - Renamon elaborated, "The horned digimon seems to understand it. It's a type of digivice, only not like theirs." Renamon pointed at the pair of Tamers. "Its power is entirely different... but no less potent. Boy, pick it up!" Well, something told Tadayoshi it would be a bad idea to disobey, so he warily kept his eyes on both the machine and the fox while he stepped forward to take it. Commandramon watched without lowering his rifle, so Renamon pushed it down herself. "Congratulations, Commandramon." The fox then pushed Commandramon from behind toward Tadayoshi with one powerful shove.
"I'm..." In wonder, Commandramon reached out and gingerly touched the machine. It didn't do anything, but regardless the dragonoid regarded it with reverance. Finally, he commanded his troops, "Stand down. These are allies." They obeyed and broke the intimidating circle but never stopped watching. Commandramon then gestured behind himself. "Please follow us to our hideout. I promise no one will harm you - the opposite, in fact. We're in desperate need." The rest of the digimon began to retreat, then, but Commandramon himself waited until the humans began to follow.
"Uh-!" As for the glorious General himself, he didn't look much like one at that moment; again, he looked to Rebecca and Adrian for some idea of what he should do. "Guys? I already know I'm not dreaming because those claws scratched my wrists a little and hurt. What the heck is going on?" How odd that even in such a chaotic, strange situation that Tadayoshi still refused to curse, some may think.

"General?" Adrian asked, still a bit confused by what was going on. "What does a Xros Loader even do? How is it different from our digivices?"
"While a Digivice gives power to one- or two- specific Digimon," Gabumon explained matter-of-factly, "A Xros Loader essentially combines the powers of multiple different Digimon into one Super-mon."
"That's incredible..." White Wolf commented, before facing Tadayoshi. "You must be so lucky!" She then noticed that he looked... less than thrilled about all this. "I know it's confusing and scary... every Tamer or General has gone through the same emotions as you. Trust me, this will all be normal to you in no time. 'Kay?" She smiled and put a hand on his shoulder.
To put that plainly, a very attractive teenage girl put his shoulder on a seemingly awkward teenage boy.
However, Adrian was now focused on Commandramon, as he claimed that they were in desperate need. "Desperate need? What's wrong? Shoutmon and I can help you any way we can."

Once Demimeramon had gone away, it became a lot darker in that forest. Nonetheless, it was likely very easy to see just how red Tadayoshi's cheeks turned when Rebecca comforted him. In fact, he raised an eyebrow curiously when a flash of recognition crossed his face. "Wait a second... I think I know you from somewhere."
But before Yoshi could ask if Rebecca was whom he'd thought she was, Commandramon authoritatively barked, "Hurry up! We're exposed out here!" it was only after he thought to reluctantly add the word, "...please." At that point Tadayoshi gave the pair of Tamers one last look before following along to the hideout. No matter whether the rest followed suit, though, Commandramon explained, "Our village has been under the oppressive rule of a gang of outsiders for a long time now. They've been extorting us, harassing us, intimidating us, stealing from us- just about every dishonorable thing they could do. And we're what's left of those who haven't given up. We're in the middle of planning a counteroperation as we speak, in fact." Commandramon took a moment to glance at the Xros Loader then. "You... well. You're obviously no warrior."
"Excuse me?" Yoshi wasn't sure if he should be pleased, insulted, or just confused. So he decided on all three.
"Let me finish. I was going to say you must be here for a reason. I take this as a very good sign." As nice as that sounded, Commandramon's face and tone suggested it was more an unbiased matter of fact.

If White Wolf had actually heard Tadayoshi, she would've said something like: "Oh, you do? Huh..." Mainly because she didn't think it was at all necessary to brag about herself. However, because Commandramon had started yelling at everyone to get inside, she sadly did not hear anything he said.
The others followed Commandramon as he led everyone into their hideout. And that's when Commandramon explained that some gang had been harassing the Digimon here. Adrian looked around at all the other Digimon and noticed how depressed, scared or angry they all looked.
It hurt them all to see the Digimon like this...
"If I may," Gabumon interrupted Commandramon, speaking to Tadayoshi, "Xros Generals typically have a core partner, like Tamers do... and unless I'm wrong, I think this Commandramon here... is your core partner."
"And how the heck do you know that?" Agumon asked his brother, crossing his arms.
"Call it a gut feeling."
"A gut feeling? I have those all the time!"
"So do I!"
"Correction: a gut feeling not relating to hunger, or fullness or gas."
"Oh..." "Aw..."

Clearly the tunnel under the tree was not meant to accommodate so many digimon and people, a fact that became very apparent when they all tried to squeeze in. "Anyone claustrophobic?" Tadayoshi asked the group as he tried to follow Commandramon to squeeze around that table in the center of the room. "Alright... forget it. I'll shut up and just figure out what's going on on the way."
"Good decision," Commandramon assured his General, "All will become clear soon." Commandramon checked over his shoulder then and waited for the others to at least get the best spot they could to see what he wanted them to see on the table: a map of the area, including the hideout and the settlement. "There's no need to wait; if we're doing this we should do it while some of Devidramon's forces are hunting for us far away in the wrong spot. This-" Commandramon slapped a claw on one large square on the map. "-is his tent... formerly the Patamon residence."He frowned when he thought of that. "Since Devidramon is scouring the forest for us, the forces surrounding him are light now."
"Correct. I know this because I had to call in almost every favor just getting my post covered in order to come here," Renamon affirmed. "The only thing that would separate Devidramon from his personal guards is a very compelling diversion - taunts and mudballs won't cut it."
Unexpectedly, then, Tadayoshi piped up. "What if someone attacked another target? Something too important to ignore?" That made all eyes fall on Yoshi, who shriveled a little under the scrutiny. When he spoke again, it was softer. "I mean... you two said it. If he doesn't have many people - er, 'people' -, he'll have to choose between the important target and guard duty. And either way, you get to hurt them." By the end of Tadayoshi sharing his stratagem, though, he looked like he wanted to disappear, clearly not enjoying being the center of attention.
Thankfully, it was Renamon who spared him. "I'm curious about what the Tamers have to say. You look like fairly capable yourselves." She then looked the fivesome up and down before adding, "Well... some of you." She noticeably did not clarify whom she meant.
