OOC: Thanks to Fristle on the DFRP Discord (playing as Bero the BlackGabumon) to introducing me to the concept of ‘liquid time’. This thread takes place around a bit after ‘Two Paths Intertwine’, and introduces Michael O’Hara, Kenny’s dad, to the world of Digimon. Skadi won’t be digivolving until thread 3, so please do not engage in combat with me. Plot doesn’t demand it yet.An amber sky was slowly starting to form on the city of Shibuya after a long day. And for Kenny, ‘long’ was right. All he wanted was to do was just make a new start in the city of Shibuya with his dad, and hopefully, get himself into Tokyo University and get his dream job. Like, was that so hard to ask?Instead, his first day here had to be capped off with him discovering a live dust bunny who took a little too much interest in him, only for some blond teenager coming over to him and telling him what he, and somehow, she had on them was a Digimon. Live digital creatures that seemed to also be coming in from an interdimensional train station(?), could talk(?), and actually wanted to become partners with humans(?). A lot of this coming from a fuzzy alien seedling and the dust bunny. which was actually called Mallimon. He yawned a little bit as he walked back to his new home in the Shibuya residential district. Well, rather, their new home. You see, just earlier, he agreed to take the Mallimon (which he called ‘Skadi’, named after his dearly departed pet cat) home with him, if only to keep her safe and happy. And now, she was happily snuggled up in his backpack, the ungodly amount of fluff covering her keeping her warm inside. Surprisingly, between the time Kenny placed Skadi in his backpack and the time he went back to his apartment (bar the little conversation he had when they were in a quieter part of Shibuya), Skadi made very little noise, if any. Maybe she was sleeping.
Nonetheless, Kenny kept walking, still taking in his new surroundings, and remembering what his home was supposed to be. A small one level house, with 2 bedrooms. Perfect for a family that size. As he was walking along, a thought started to re-emerge in his head: What will dad think? I don’t think my dad would be happy with me just dragging giant dust bunnies home. But Skadi told me earlier that she came from the Shibuya train station of all things.
I just hope dad will at least let me keep Skadi. As he was walking, he felt the bag shuffling ever-so-slightly. As the zippers started to widen, Skadi’s fluff, along with her right ear and eye, became a bit visible. Ordinary passerby could easily mistake her for a cute plush toy from a claw machine, but her movement would suggest otherwise. ”Hey Kenny,” Skadi whispered to him, “are we home yet?” It was clear from her own visible eye that she was scanning her new surroundings. Nobody didn't seem to take notice, thank God, but Kenny wasn’t keen on taking risks, especially with Akari’s request to keep the Digimon a secret still ringing in his head. ”Not yet, Skadi,” Kenny whispered back, ”and please don’t try to unzip the bag again. You know what Akari said. I have to keep you a secret. You don’t want to get in trouble now, do you?” Quickly, he squished Skadi back into the backpack and zipped it up. He prayed no-one was looking, before setting off again back to home, Skadi keeping quiet again almost immediately.

Alan Pantell much preferred being in the digital world to the human one. He could spend a whole day in the digital world and only a seventh of one would pass in the human one. For that reason, he would greatly limit the time he spends in the human world. That said, he had a list of reasons for which he would break his policy.
- The First: Communication with family. His family would be expecting a video call every so often, and some form of communication at least daily. This was impossible to do in the digital world, but the way time worked, this meant he only had to remember every week. He hadn't seen his family in person since he left for Japan. They had, however, taken a liking to his Veemon partner, Levi.
- The Second: Human Friends Who Live in the Human World This one is self-explanatory. Not everyone has nowhere else to be.
- The Third: Special Occasions Most holidays only come once in a year! You gotta check out what both worlds are doing for the festivities!
- The Fourth: Plain Ol' Nostalgia Whether it's food, sights, or activities, sometimes even Alan wanted to go somewhere where he knew what everything was, and where the chances of being attacked by monsters were still there, but nowhere near as high.
This evening in particular, Alan had come up with a fifth reason, though one might argue it's an extension of the second. The young man from America had decided that he would periodically patrol the streets of Shibuya. New digidestined were always being chosen, and with a digimon's ability to detect other digimon, going on a patrol of sorts would make it easier for him to meet with new digidestined, or ones he hadn't met yet, of which he admitted there were many.
"Don't fall asleep now, Levi," whispered Alan into his communication device, although the miniature dragon with whom he was communicating was right behind him, in his backpack. He could feel it slowly shuffle, just before hearing a yawn.
"I'm not, I'm not..." replied Levi's voice. "I just find your backpack so much comfier than when we first started... weird, huh?"
"I guess it helps when you're not raring to get up and go."
"Yeah, and also when the person carrying you can hear you talk, so you don't have to hoist yourself up barely enough that you can be heard, but not seen. With the zipper closed, I can move around as much as I- hey, I'm sensing one."
"Hm?"
"There's a digimon somewhere nearby. Keep an eye out."
Alan was starting to get excited that his idea was working, slowly scanning the crowd walking nearby. He noticed a man not too much older than him, with something fuzzy sticking out of his own backpack. "This direction?" asked the bespectacled boy as he slowly closed the distance between them, adjusting his black baseball cap.
"Yep. Warmer... warmer..." replied the Veemon. Once Alan was fairly certain he had seen the man try to hide whatever was in his backpack without looking at it to see it was sticking out, he decided to approach the man, tapping him on the shoulder. Once he had his attention, he would hold out his blue-and-gold D3 digivice. "Excuse me," he would ask, "sorry to bother you, but would you happen to have any familiarity with a device that looks like this?"

It wasn't clear to the average bystander to what Kenny was thinking, but his mind was still comprehending about how he could explain Skadi to his dad. After all, after he said goodbye to Akari, he called up his dad to tell him how his day was, and, to help get this off his chest, a quick talk about Skadi. He remembered how his dad told him to, if he really had to, would keep it safe for the night (of course, it did help that Skadi had jumped into the call and persuaded him). But something this small right now couldn't possibly defend itself now, could it?
He kept walking, just hoping to get home as soon as possible. There were a fair amount of chatter, mostly in Japanese, some in English, he swore somebody said 'Digimon', but he wrote it off as a mere mondergreen, but nothing to be utterly concerned about, he assumed. Guess nobody spotted Skadi doing that, after all. He did feel a bit of twitching coming from her ears within his bag, but he just shrugged it off to being a little itchy. With a content sigh of relief, he continued on home...
...for all of what felt like approximately 5 seconds until he felt someone tap his shoulder. It felt gentle physically, but mentally, it made his heart skip a beat or too. He had a look of surprise on his face, but quickly cleared his face, trying to make it stay natural, as he turned around to see a young man (presumably a neighbour) with unkempt dirty-blond hair, half-framed glasses, a black hoodie, and, like Akari before him, also looked like he wasn't from here.
Oh shit. He spotted us. Just act natural, Kenny.
That would be easier said than done. He assumed that Skadi must have given them away that easily. After all, Akari must have had come over earlier thanks to Skadi's little... incident at the Hachiko statue, and now this other young man had come up to him, probably ready to ask something along the lines of 'Why is a giant dust bunny just sitting around in your backpack?' He had an answer hidden up his sleeve: 'It's a plush toy and I won it from a crane game, and my backpack is faulty!'
Surprisingly, upon having hooked Kenny's attention, the young man didn't ask anything of that sort. Instead, he held out a small strange device in his hand, a small, weird device in the shape of an upside-down egg, but with a thick antenna sticking out of it, coloured white, but with blue coloured grips, faint thin lines of gold outlining it, and asked if he knew anything about it.
Unsurprisingly, Kenny didn't know what it was. Maybe it's one of those old obscure gaming devices that never left Japan and the internet somehow never got wind of it's existence, he thought. But, Akari did show me that odd Digivice earlier and pointed out they could be in many shapes and sizes, so...
Rubbing the back of his head awkwardly and glancing at the weird device in the man's palm (all the while mentally praying to God, Buddha and Arceus that the fellow foreigner didn't happen to spot Skadi and he just wanted to talk to him about this weird device), he replied, "Well, actually, I've never even heard of these things before. Besides, why do you want to talk to me anyway? Just wondering, that's all."

The young man's expression shifted to something more uncomfortable once the stranger told him he didn't recognize the D-3.
Oh crap, do I just look weird now?
"There's definitely a digimon very close, Alan. A few feet at most." whispered Levi into the communication device, helping his partner regain some confidence.
Okay, okay. There's definitely a digimon close by. This helps regain some confidence. Worst-case scenario, this guy's holo-suited and playing dumb, and we both feel awkward and go our separate ways. No harm done.
Most people might argue that the real worst-case scenario was that the person truly knew nothing of digimon, but as Alan was never too keen on keeping that secret, even if he understood why he was encouraged to. He would tell it to them straight.
"I'm sorry for approaching you in such a brazen manner, but to be more clear, I was wondering if you have either come into contact with or know what a digimon is."
He said "digimon" more slowly, with clear enunciation, so that it couldn't possibly be misinterpreted.
"If not, sorry to bother you, and I'll be on my way."
In a way, he internally reveled in the idea that the person he was talking to might actually be clueless. Maybe he'll try to find out what a digimon is. He might even find out. He didn't really feel any shame if a "happy accident" like this were to occur, so-to-speak. He was glad digimon came into his life, and figured, while his experiences were not universal, there was a good chance it could improve other people's lives, too.

As the blond boy's face shifted to a look that suggested a sense of disappointment, immediately, Kenny started to (mentally) kick himself for what he said, worried he had come off as rude, as he muttered a barely-audible "Oh shit" under his breath. On one hand, he didn't want to come off as rude to him, but he was still recovering from the shock, but on the other hand, he was confused about why the blondie was showing him a random device instead of, you know, asking about the dust bunny (although the fact he didn't ask about that may have been a blessing in disguise).
But before Kenny could apologise for what he said, a small voice came out of nowhere, whispering... something? He heard the word 'Digimon' being uttered again, this time coming from the weird voice, like if the blond was secretly in kahoots with a ghost. At the same time, he felt Skadi twitching again, a little rustling sound coming from the bag.
It seemed the blonde wasn't going to up and leave him alone just yet though, as he proceeded to ask about if Kenny had either met or knew what 'Digimon' were. And then it hit him:
Akari also knew what Digimon were herself (to an extent), and instead of questioning about the dust bunny itself almost immediately, she coerced him to calm his soon-to-be-new friend down, and now this random stranger had just waltzed up to him and asked him about this weird device and Digimon almost immediately, when any other person would just have asked about the dust bunny. Or in other words, he knows.
Nether mind that. At least that man seemingly knew what Digimon were as well. God, Buddha and Arceus willing, he'd at least help to fill in the gaps Akari couldn't.
"Actually, yeah. I know what Digimon are. Well, to an extent." He replied, "I literally just found out about them a few hours ago." He smiled a little sheepishly as he added, "And, well... there was this one who seemed a little too happy to meet me. She's in my bag right now. I think she's must've caught fleas though. She's been twitching quite a bit."

"A few hours ago, you say?" inquired Alan, who was feeling just a pinch prouder of himself for stumbling across exactly what he wanted. "Lotsa people find out about digimon around these parts. As a matter of fact, I was just going on a patrol of sorts, looking for people who were new to the concept and might be confused. Like you, huh? That said, this'll be my first time helping out a new chosen. Gotta start somewhere, right? I'm determined to be a better guide than mine were, anyway, so pardon me if I sound a bit too friendly, but that's enough about that. I'll do my best to answer any questions you might have, maybe even show you a few examples, but first: we are technically supposed to at least try to keep this a secret, so do you happen to know any safer places in which we can have this conversation, and have our partners join in, too? Away from prying eyes and ears and such?"

So this boy was going on patrol for wild Digimon newbies, huh? And a guide? It was like if God, Buddha and Arceus specifically selected this one guy and sent him down from the heavens to go help Kenny. He let out a more content smile this time as he answered the boy.
"Heh. Sorry, I'm guess I'm still getting used to, well... all of this." He shrugged, "But yeah, you're right. Actually, I was just trying to get back home. And I could use a little help trying to explain to my dad about... my new friend." Looking at the young blonde man, he added, "I think you could be the right person for the job. We can discuss this more at my house."
He started walking again, expecting that the boy would follow alongside him willingly. If anything, this could be a good chance for Kenny to learn more about the boy himself. More new friends would be nice in his new home, "Anyways, I don't think I've introduced myself properly. The name's Kenneth O'Hara. But you can call me Kenny. Everyone does, anyway." He chuckled, "I just moved in from Australia. My dad's got a new job here, and I'm working to get into Tokyo University one day myself." His home wasn't very far from where the blond boy stopped him, so, if anything, they'd be up and talking in no time.
Inside the bag, Skadi could overhear everything that had been going on so far, albeit slightly muffled. Her ears would not stop twitching, no matter how many times she tried to get it to stop. And the fact she couldn't open the bag again after Kenny warned her not to, even if to simply say 'hi', or point out her twitching was not because of fleas. She mumbled quietly in frustration. But she stayed put.

"Oh, revealing digimon to a parent? Yeah! I'd be glad to help with that! Lead the way!" As he began to follow along, the tamer was glad to hear that his new acquaintance wasn't going to go the unnecessary mile of hiding his partner from people close to him. Then again, he could think of at least one person he knew who could testify that it wasn't always unnecessary.
"Great to meet you, Kenny! My name's Alan. Alan Pantell. I'm from the United States. After finishing high school, I came here on what was supposed to be a two-week solo vacation, to see if I could pull off travelling alone. I got wrapped up in digital stuff, decided I liked it more than non-digital stuff, and now I'm a digital world resident who comes to the human world every so often when I feel so inclined, and today was one of those times. And if you haven't been to the digital world yet, we could take you to see it sometime, if you want!"

Mentally, Kenny breathed a sigh of relief. This kid was really going to help him explain Skadi - and the whole idea of Digimon - to his dad. After all, if live, actually sentient - and potentially dangerous - monsters that could swallow a person whole were really roaming Shibuya like lions in the African savannah seeking out prey, and he assumed he couldn't convince his dad that he could keep Skadi on his own, then maybe the boy would be the oomph factor needed to convince him that Skadi would be helpful, nay, necessary to keep them safe from danger. Besides, even if he did decide to hide Skadi, the truth would out sooner or later, and Kenny really didn't want to break his dad's trust.
But Skadi felt so keen to find a new friend to call her own. And to just leave her out to either fend for herself or die... he really didn't want to get blood on his hands on that regard. After all, in the span of a single moment, that afternoon he went from 'man frightened of harmless dust bunny on his foot' to 'budding friend with the harmless dust bunny'. And with the bunny now wanting a place to call home, he had to get the help he needed.
"Yeah, thank you." He replied as they walked. "I'm... honestly grateful for that." He rubbed the back of his head awkwardly, "To tell you the truth, I did tell dad about her earlier, but he sounded pretty concerned. He's honestly not sure about if I should keep Skadi, for my own safety, but she's been insisting she's the one who'll keep me safe."
As the blond boy introduced himself as Alan Pantell, he explained quite a bit about himself, including the fact that he, an American, who originally came to Japan on holiday, became a resident of the Digital World because 'he got wrapped up in digital stuff', and now was calling the Digital World home, often dropping by... well, he 'felt so inclined' (Kenny mentally translated it as 'whenever the hell I want', which, he had to admit, was pretty cool). And he was casually offering to bring Kenny to the Digital World, maybe for a visit.
So he's not a neighbour then.
"Well, maybe when I get the time to do so. My dad's already setting up my job for me, and it's a part time job at the Japanese branch of an institute he works for. Luckily, it's part time, so I can talk to you whenever so we can plan a little day tour or two." He told Alan with a smile.
Finally, he was home. The small, one level house in question, a dark blue roof with an off-white exterior, and no gate. "Whaddaya know, Alan," he told the blonde, "We're here." Funny how times goes fast when you talk to someone interesting.
Walking up the small steps, he knocked on the brown door, and was answered immediately by his dad, who wore a concerned look on his face.
It was clear Kenny took a lot off his dad in looks. He possessed the same brown hair colour as his son, and while it was scruffy like his son's, it looked a lot more cleaner and less scruffier than it. Along with it was a balbo beard that covered his chin, which wasn't very large but covered his chin just fine. He stood a little taller than Kenny, and did not wear glasses like his son did. His build was burlier than his son's, and looked a little heavier than his skinny son. He wore a white buttoned up shirt with a black jacket and long black pants.
”Kenny, you're late! What happened to you?” His dad said, ”Please tell me you didn't get hurt. I was so worried about you.”
“No worries, dad. I'm fine.” Kenny replied, making his dad breath a sigh of relief, “But I just came across a… well, I wouldn't exactly say ‘neighbour’, because he says doesn't live here, but he's willing to help you understand my situation better. His name's Alan,” he gestured to the young man, “and he’s actually pretty nice. I'm sure you'll really like him a lot.”

"You can trust Skadi when she says that, Kenny," affirmed Alan, prompting an unseen smile of silent approval from Levi. "I'm not about to claim that everyone's case is the same, but it's a safe bet that a partnered digimon is going to stick with you and protect you, provided you show them the same level of respect and care. Like any good friend, ya know? Speaking from my own experience, naturally. Not with friends in general," he admitted, looking a little bit shameful. "With digimon. Levi n' I went through a rough patch at the start, but now we're closer than siblings. Oh, right, can't believe I forgot to mention him. I'm carrying him around right here, but you can meet him once we're at our destination. A big part of the reason I wanna show you the digital world is so that it's easier to show you some of the stuff that'd be hard to explain otherwise, so I'd be happy to take you there when you're free."
With that, the two acquaintances had already reached the house to which they had been walking.
Alan kicked off his shoes at the entryway as he knew was polite, and patiently stood by as Kenny greeted his father, waiting for them to address the elephant in the room, namely, himself. Once it happened, he bowed to Kenny's dad, blushing imperceptibly at the expectations Kenny has set for the impression he'd make. "My name is Alan Pantell. It's nice to meet you." He knew he probably didn't have to bow, but you know what they say: when in a place, do as the people who live there do. This advice is considerably harder to follow in the Digital World, but then again, the adage applies mostly to social etiquette, so being unable to turn into giant monsters and shoot fire from his mouth is a handicap generally understood by the digital locals.
"I by no means consider myself an expert on digital matters, but I will do my best to speak from any knowledge and experience I can offer. Now, I suppose we should start with this: Kenny, you said you two have talked before about this. Would either of you give me a better idea of where you left off in your discussions, preferably from both perspectives?"

Post by Kenny O'Hara and Skadi on Mar 7, 2019 7:51:54 GMT
Just before Alan and Kenny got back home, the former told Kenny... well, quite a bit, to be honest. Mainly about how the latter could honestly trust Skadi to back up her claims, how a partner Digimon would be able to take care of their partner, like with a friend, and he himself had a Digimon partner he called his own (which he just so happened to carry around himself).
Apparently, despite Kenny mentioning that he and his dad had just moved in from Australia, and this new guy had practically called the Digital World 'home', Alan was still seemingly willing to follow Japanese etiquette to a T, as indicated by him kicking his shoes off by the door, then greeting his dad by bowing to him instead of the customary handshake that Kenny and his dad was so used to, but eh. What mattered to Kenny's dad though was what even going on right now, what with him dragging home a complete stranger when Kenny had been bringing a Digimon home with him.
Extending out his arm for a handshake instead, the dad replied, "Nice to meet you, Mr. Pantell. The name's Michael O'Hara." He then looked over to Kenny, a little concerned as the look on his face showed, "Kenny, I'd hate to interrupt your little conversation, but why did you bring him here? You just met him!"
"Well, yeah, funny story, dad," Kenny started to explain quickly, "I was just walking home when Alan came over to me. And he seems to know quite a bit about Digimon. He's said he's willing to help us understand these so-called 'Digimon' better, so we at least understand what I've got myself into. He's said he's even got a Digimon of his own."
"Another Digimon?" Michael sighed, "Please tell me he at least has it under control."
"No worries, dad. " Kenny answered his dad's concern, gesturing Alan to come inside, "I'm pretty sure he has."
It was then where Alan asked Kenny about what had happened beforehand; oh boy, was this going to be interesting. He had to recount... basically everything that happened up to this point. Remembering what Akari said earlier, he lowered his voice, and turned to Alan.
"Yeah, well what happened was that I was walking around Shibuya today while dad was at work. And when I went to the Hachiko statue, I found what I thought was a lost plushie." He rubbed his head awkwardly, trying to recount a certain embarrassing detail, "But it turned out to be alive, and I thought she was a live dust bunny, and she started to... uh... rub against my leg." As he recomposed himself, he added, "But then this woman came over to me today and helped me. She told me what Digimon are, and showed me her own partner, a Youramon, or whatever it is. So we talked for a bit, then I called my dad and told him about Skadi. And he sounded worried because he overheard another conversation about them and how dangerous they could be and how I shouldn't just be talking with them willy nilly. But Skadi butted in and wanted to meet him and... well, here we are. Dad says he doesn't want me to keep Skadi because she could be dangerous."
"That's because I'm worried about you, Kenny." Michael gently pointed out, "For all we know, she really could be dangerous, and I don't want to lose you." He didn't sound angry at Kenny, but it was more out of concern. To be honest, neither father nor son truly knew how dangerous Digimon could really be. Akari did tell him about that so-called 'Champion' Digimon that nearly ended her life, and Kenny was aware of that, but Skadi had been insisting she would be able to protect him and his loved ones.
"But she's been insisting she can protect me from other Digimon." Kenny protested, "And... look, I'll let Alan tell you more. I'm sure he knows more than me on this." Even if the blonde boy had pointed out that he may not have been an expert on matters like this, he was practically a super-expert compared to him, at least what he assumed. "Mind if I invite Alan inside?"
Beat. His dad shrugged. "Well, I could. Besides, we're going out to eat tonight, I'm sure it wouldn't hurt." He looked at Alan, "And if you're going to let your Digimon out, at least keep it under control. I don't want anyone to get hurt." He then turned and walked inside. Kenny followed suit, expecting Alan would follow.
As Kenny followed, Michael turned to Alan again, "Don't forget to close the door, we don't wanna let out the AC."
The small hallway, it's left side bearing 2 doors, the bedrooms, led into the living room. The kitchen was just nearby, with the living room and it sharing the same wooden floors, with white walls everywhere. "Sorry." Michael shrugged, "We're still redecorating." He and Kenny took a seat on the brown two-piece couch. The room was a little small, but snug. Enough for a few people. The TV sat on the other side, facing the couch.
As Kenny and Michael sat down, the young man unhooked his bag, placed it on his lap, and unzipped it. "Okay, Skadi, you can come out now." He whispered to the Digimon. Skadi obliged, popping out of the backpack from the top, her fuzzy body ragged and dirty, the Blaziken plushie popping out as well, and with a relieved look in her eyes. Thank God she was not claustrophobic.
"Hi!" Skadi squeaked up to the present company, "I'm Skadi the Mallimon! It's nice to meet you guys!" She turned to Kenny, "Man, your bag feels so stuffy. What do you carry, anyway?"

Alan listened with intent to Kenny's story, chuckling as politely as he could at Michael's concerns and fears. Understandable, given the amount of information the father had available on digimon. Alan followed the others into the house, then greeted Skadi with a smile when she was let out of the bag. "Hello, Skadi! It's a pleasure to meet you, too!"
He scratched his chin for a few seconds, wondering where to start now that it was his turn to speak.
"Let's see..." he began, "Alright. I'm not going to try to explain everything in one go, as that'd likely do no more than simply confuse everyone. What I will try to do is offer small amounts of information as I see relevant, with frequent pauses for questions. I won't try to blow past any topics. If you have any comments, questions, anything you want elaboration on, say so whenever you wish, and I will answer to the best of my knowledge. Now, to begin: I can only assume that Kenny has been chosen as a digimon Tamer, and that Skadi here is his digimon partner. Though I say 'chosen,' nobody knows for sure who or what does the 'choosing,' and on what grounds, and though I say 'Tamer,' it is a proper noun, and by no means am I implying that digimon partners are creatures which need to be 'tamed.' I will now pause for comments, concerns, and discussion."
A slightly muffled voice could be heard coming from Alan's backpack. "Uh, Alan, I get that you don't wanna rush things, but if you'd rush letting me outta the bag, too, I'd appreciate it."
The young man blushed and remained silent for a short time before responding in a whisper, "Just a few more minutes, Levi, I promise."

If Skadi's beaming eyes looking at Alan told anyone anything, she seemed to have started trusting this guy as much as she trusted Akari and Kenny. Kenny and Michael listened intently as Alan inquired him about the whole deal about being 'chosen' and 'tamers'. Wait? 'Chosen'? Skadi didn't seem too hung up about all this. She seemed to listen to Alan keenly. However, after Alan paused for questions, (and had the bag speak up for a bit), Michael spoke up first.
"Wait a minute? So you're telling me that my son was actually 'chosen' to be a 'tamer' by some unknown entity for whatever reason." A puzzled look crossed the dad's face, "I... honestly find that a little too hard to believe."
Kenny shuffled a little on his seat. "I can't say I disagree with you on that, dad. After all, as far as I'm concerned, I just saw her out on the streets today mistaking her for a plushie. But then it turned out she was alive, and started humping my foot..."
All of a sudden, the Mallimon started to bounce in the backpack irrationally, "Kenny, what part of 'I wasn't humping your foot' do you understand? I was hugging you, remember? There's a difference. Besides, you were the first person who actually wanted to talk to me today!"
Kenny could only shrug in response, despite the apparent spring this dust bunny had. "To be honest, Skadi, it was kind of hard to tell. You lack limbs..."
"Stop teasing me!" She yelled back. However, there was a tinge of playfulness in her voice.
Kenny could only snicker for a bit, before he addressed Alan again, "Anyways, as I was saying, after... whatever Skadi did, a nice woman named Akari came over to help me befriend the Mallimon, and we had a bit of a talk today, and she had her own Digimon, a tiny Yuramon named Helvetica." He recounted, "She encouraged me to take the Mallimon home, because she, the Digimon, must have taken a bit of a shine to me, and she's promised to defend me from any dangerous Digimon that cross over from here."
"And that's what I'm worried about." Michael spoke up, "I overheard some people on the street earlier, and one of them casually brought up about an apparent Digimon battle they witnessed the other day, and about the damages caused." He sighed a little bit. "I've already lost my loving wife all those years ago. God knows I don't want to lose my son as well."
Michael had just only finished his sentence as the Mallimon spoke up again, puffing out her chest in a bid to impress everybody in the room, "And that's what's not going to happen!" She proudly declared, "As Kenny's partner, I won't let any harm come to him! Anyone who dares to harm him won't know what hit them when I'm done with them!" She boasted proudly, although one, if they could listen hard enough, could not deny the nervous tone in her voice. "And that's a promise!"
Kenny shuffled in his seat slightly nervously. He knew that Skadi wouldn't lie to him, but she seemed a little too keen about it. What if she let herself be killed by another Digimon just to keep him safe? After all, he wanted to take Skadi home to keep her safe. Shibuya, and indeed, Japan was a very large place, and to let her wander the streets unattended was akin to letting her die. And the last thing Kenny wanted was the blood of the innocent on his hands.
He had to find something to take his mind off it.
"Say, Alan, you said you had a Digimon with you earlier," Kenny inquired to Alan, "Can we please see it... him... her... whatever?"
"Are you sure it's not going to attack us?" Michael pointed out.
"Relax, dad." Kenny tried to assure him, "He seems to have a lot of experience. I'm sure he has him under control."

Alan shrugged at Michael's disbelief. "I find it as hard to believe as anyone, but everyone really just assumes that someone was chosen by somebody as it seems the most likely option. Criteria for being 'chosen' is anyone's guess. As for your concern regarding danger, I do share Skadi's view on the matter."
Again, the young man had to silently chuckle when his partner was brought up again.
"Right, of course," he started, "how rude of me. You don't have to worry, I've had him under control for a while now." He set his backpack on the floor and unzipped it.
"Geez, you make it sound like I'm high-maintenance or something," said a small, blue, draconic-yet-somewhat-humanoid figure, shuffling the bag off of himself, and shaking it off of his foot, then putting the grey ivy cap he dropped during the process back onto his head, and adjusting it with both hands. "But since we spend all our time together, I guess we wouldn't know the difference anyway, huh?" Having said that, he turned to shake the hands of the two new human acquaintances, making it a point to start with Kenny, who would no doubt be less reluctant to shake his hand, followed by Michael, who would have seen by that point that it's perfectly safe to do so. His face held nothing but a friendly smile during this whole process. "Pleasure to make your acquaintance! My name is Levi, my pronouns are he/him/his/his, my species is called Veemon, and I am what is known as a Rookie-level digimon! Alan and I are like two peas in a pod! Two bullets in a mag! Two-"
"Levi, please don't finish that quote."

It seemed Alan was pretty mum on the whole 'chosen' thing. As far as boy and cotton ball knew, they just wanted a new start in a new land, and everything that happened boiled down to sheer coincidence. But at least somebody here was agreeing with Skadi and her probably far fetched assertions.
"Why thank you!" Skadi beamed at the blonde, "Maybe when I digivolve to Rookie, I could go for a friendly spar with your partner sometime! Just so I can show what I'm capable of and impress him!" She wasn't lying. Despite Kenny being told to let Skadi absorb other Digimon's data fully when defeated, this was something Kenny was trying to juggle. Skadi, on the other hand, wasn't exactly keen on doing that. Crazy man eating beasts she would probably aim to knock out ASAP, and even villains to absorb back into a Digitama when push would come to shove.
Kenny and Michael's eyes widened in confusion as a blue humanoid lizard, about the size of a young kid, emerged out of Alan's bag, and conversing with his apparent partner like if this was perfectly normal, like if it was nothing special. The Yuramon was at least comprehensible to Kenny, at least, that thing fitting snugly in Akari's pocket like a young boy in primary school carrying a hackey sack in his. How Alan managed to squeeze a lizard larger than a toddler into his backpack was probably a Digimon thing. Even Skadi was a little surprised to see what happened, looking at the giant lizard with a glance of curiosity..
Thankfully, it seemed that the giant lizard seemed really friendly, if the way he he went to shake hands with them was any indication. Kenny didn't hesitate to shake the lizardman's hand all that much. However, he did have to admit, that lizard's palm did feel a little cold and very scaly, like how a normal lizard would. but surprisingly enough, not as slimy. Michael, on the other hand, kind of flinched a little bit, but upon seeing the lizard meant no harm, he extended his hand out to shake the lizard's too, and smiled in relief.
The giant lizard then introduced himself as Levi, a 'Rookie' level Digimon 'Veemon' and yep Michael was lost already. Kenny at least understood what that Veemon was on about, he was still trying to comprehend all this. Skadi squeaked out to Levi happily, "Hi Levi! I'm Skadi, the Mallimon! I'd shake your hand, but..." She shuffled a little awkwardly in the bag, "...you know why." She quickly shook herself off before puffing out her chest in a bid to impress the duo, "I'm going to be a big strong Digimon one day and I'm going to protect my Tamer from evil Digimon and I'm going to be a hero!" Truth be told, it probably wasn't going to impress anybody, but hey, it wouldn't hurt to try.
Kenny looked over to Skadi again, "Hey, Skadi, wasn't this the 'Rookie' level Akari told me about earlier?"
"Yep," She replied, "Digimon come in all shape and sizes. And each of us have different abilities we can use to fight enemies. Veemon, for example, are mainly physical attackers who tend to fight their opponents head on. I just don't know what I'm capable yet... other than just blow cotton everywhere and make a mess."
"Promise me you won't do that in the house." Michael replied.
"...I won't." Skadi looked a little embarrassed.
Whoops, it seemed that they were getting a little off topic now. Kenny had to get it back on track, "Hey, Alan, how did you get your Digivice anyways?" Akari just seemed to get hers right off the bat the second she got that Yuramon, as far as he knew. Kenny's was yet to show up.
