A Way Forward [Shade/Makoto]

It was rather difficult to add in modern amenities without clashing with the aesthetic of the temple, but with the right color scheme and placement, it was able to be done. Toki tilted his head, unsure of what Shade meant by demidevidrops. "Well first off, care to describe what demidevidrops are? If they're spicy, we definitely have plenty of spices to work with...as for the numbers...well they're for a lot of different functions. A timer to set depending on the food you're cooking, the temperature at which to cook..." He looked over at some of the utensils he brought out "Measurements. I've got a few easy recipes to work with if you'd like. Instructions are important for cooking, especially if there's more than one ingredient." He pulled out a few books and placed them to the side. "We've got plenty to work with."
Aylin chimed in "Take your time and pick out what looks tasty and see if any recipes use what you're picking! It's very important to follow them to the letter. No increasing the temperature to make it cook faster! That isn't how it works." She said with a little wag of her finger.
"For the microwave-" He gestured to it "-you press the numbers depending on how long you want to cook something for. If you want to cook something for eight minutes, then you press 8 once, then 0 twice before hitting start." He said, further gesturing. "Same kind of principle applies to the oven. Set a temperature, then set the time you want to cook. Be sure to let it preheat for a few minutes. The stove's a little tricky." He looked over the various knobs. "Each of these knobs goes to one section of the stovetop. Pick one, press down on the knob, and turn it to low, medium, or high..." He continued to go over the nuances of cooking in a proper kitchen with Shade. "I hope this is all making sense. I haven't really had to teach anyone how to cook before...I'm still learning a lot of it myself."
Makoto elaborated on what kind of food the demidevidrops were. A spicy candy of sorts. Cinnamon flavored? That actually sounded pretty good. He blushed slightly as they called his forms beautiful. He wasn't used to people using such words to describe him. It wasn't shameful to him to hear such things. Quite the contrary, the compliments were pleasant to hear.
He considered what Makoto said about negative emotions and despair "Speaking of such things...there's someone out there I'd like for you to look out for if you ever meet him. I haven't seen him myself, but...someone that fought Tsusagimon a long time ago...and someone that I fought relatively recently, appears to have been reborn as a new Digimon, going by Malik. I heard this from one of his old soldiers. He apparently knows little of his past life and the little he does...torments him. I know I should probably approach him myself, but if I did I'm afraid it might overwhelm him. The fact that he's living a good life and has a chance to start over brings me more happiness than I can describe...like I actually made a difference...but...again, if you ever meet him...treat him well. I don't want him to be held back by guilt and despair. He's...not that Digimon anymore."
Aylin looked down slightly. Malik's old self did a lot of bad, but she couldn't bring herself to hate the new one in any way. He was like a lost child who needed some semblance of love and support, but agreed with Toki that approaching him now would just trigger some bad memories. Maybe one day, once he's settled.
He smiled at Makoto's offer to further teach Shade about the more complicated equipment in the kitchen "Well let's see...what can we make that's simple? He could make some rice balls with fish and meat in the center, some ramen, salad, sandwiches...the sky's the limit!"

Shade shifted slightly and rested his hand on makoto’s shoulder; at least trying to support them. He knew how it felt and well there wasn’t much he could say about that. He had to admit that there was a certain beauty to the strength that it had. But that was… something he felt he didn’t need to say either. At the question about DemiDevidrops he’d nod his head. They were spicy and well…
”Cinnamon, some other things as well… they’re hard candy that you suck on. Shaped like tears if shade is remembering right.”
He had nothing to really say about all this strength, hope and peace. At least anything that he hadn’t already said before. So he opted to remain mostly silent. Nodding his head or affirming with a grunt. He wasn’t the most talkative mon normally so the fact he had been chatting this much in the first place was a miracle!
Once inside the kitchen he was fiddling around with some things up until makoto mentioned that he shouldn’t mess with the stove or microwave. He’d draw his hands back and give a small nod to them.
”...Might be a better idea, shade doesn’t like the chance of mucking something up.”
The topic of the various tools and utensils that they had here was something that he well… For the most part didn’t understand. Slowly tilting his head this way or that; he looked very very confused. He never cooked with recipes, he never used utensils and honestly out of everything the only thing he knew how to address was the DemiDevidrops.
”Hmm… Well they taste spicy. They’re pleasant and usually are coveted by virus types out in the wilds. Sometimes used as trade between neighbors out and about.”
He seemed to be having issues really describing what they were other than the fact they were spicy, a hard candy… and well named DemiDevidrops. Probably didn’t help with the amount of information he was being given. But then there was…
Malik?
Shade’s eyes turned into slits and he’d listen with rapt attention to what Toki had said. Reborn as a new digimon? Working on living a good life and something about happiness. He’d reach out and firmly clasp toki’s shoulder with a hand.
”The sins one has done in a past life should not carry to their new one unless they look to carry the same weight. If he is living happily or is trying to live happily for those he wronged then he should be at peace with those he wronged. It was not his choices and it would hurt his chances of a new life if just because we heard he was ‘bad’ in a prior one. Much like how shade was given a chance he should be given one too.”
Shade would draw back and sort of lean on the counter, he’d puff out a small ring of cold air that eventually dissipated. Rice balls? Some ramen? Salad…? He snorted at that option and then just gave a small shrug.
”Shade prefers meat and usually cooks it over a fire… so he isn’t really… sure what to suggest.”

Seeing Toki blush, Makoto couldn't help but gently laugh; smiling warmly at the cute reactions. It was endearing, just how easy it was to make the young man blush - though they had a (joking) feeling that one of these days, they were going to end up making Toki blush so hard, that he just won't know how to stop blushing! It'd certainly be an accomplishment, that much was for sure.
As Shade confirmed Makoto's thoughts on the DemiDevidrops likely being cinnamon though, the Renamon-X would snap out of their thoughts, before nodding back in acknowledgement. "I'll look into some recipes later, and we can see about making you some candy that's similar - if not identical - to those Demidevidrops. How does that sound, Shade darling?" They'd suggest with a smile, adding "You could even help me taste-test as we figure out the perfect recipe!"
As they entered into the kitchen though, Toki and Aylin would both talk about the microwave and stove, the functions they had, and the importance of following a recipe to the letter. These were things that Makoto understood quite well - being that they worked with both appliances at home quite regularly. Shade, however... He seemed a little bit clueless to it all, prompting Makoto to scratch their cheek a little bit sheepishly; they were pretty sure the explanations were going right over poor Shade's head.
Ah well... They supposed that this was something that Shade would need to learn through experience, as opposed to just from a verbal explanation. But that was okay - Makoto was more than happy to help Shade figure it out, on their own time.
Instead, what caught Makoto's eye, was Toki's mention of another digimon - by the name of Malik. It sounded as though this digimon had a rough past life that haunted him even now - and the fox's face would twist with a clear worry and concern, as well as sympathy, as they nodded in response. "I understand, dear. I'll keep an eye out for him, whenever I'm out and about, then." They'd promise in a gentle murmur; wondering briefly how Malik must be doing right now.
Aylin, herself, seemed a bit bothered at the subject of Malik, though - to which Makoto would offer the Lunamon a gentle smile of reassurance, reaching down to pat her on the shoulder. Though they'd ask her if she was okay, they didn't want to put her on the spot - and they had a feeling that she'd speak her mind, if something was bothering her deeply enough. So, hopefully, this gentle reassurance would be enough.
Shortly after though, Shade would speak up - suddenly seemingly quite adamant about the subject! It was a change in demeanor that'd lightly surprise Makoto - their attention fully on the WraithGarurumon as he spoke. But the words he spoke, well... They certainly rung true to Makoto; they shouldn't hold Malik to his past life, especially if Malik himself is trying to move on and live happily. Smiling softly, the Renamon-X would nod to Shade; reaching out to hold and squeeze his hand. "Well said, darling."
And with that, the talk of food would soon come after. Toki suggested something simple - something like onigiri, ramen, salad, sandwiches... Shade, though, didn't know what exactly to suggest, besides the fact he preferred meat. Humming softly, the fox would ponder for a moment, before speaking up - mentioning "It sounds like spicy flavors and meat are the two things you like primarily; so perhaps we could do something like curry, or pasta, or stirfry? Those may not be quite as simple, but they're still easy to learn, I'd say." Tapping their chin in thought, they'd soon glance over to Toki and Aylin, asking "How do you two feel about spicy, darlings?"

Toki smiled slightly at Shade's description of the candies "Ooh, cinnamon hard candies. Hard to go wrong with those. Spicy and sweet candies are always a treat, though I'm someone who prefers softer on the sweeter side myself. It's fascinating that it's used as a sort of currency among virus types...you learn more interesting things about Digital World Culture every day." He said with a beaming smile.
He respected Shade's reluctance to mess with anything too complicated, especially if he wasn't used to cooking with such things. However, he was taken aback as Shade suddenly approached and put a hand to his shoulder while he explained his philosophy on life and the burdens of past lives. He gently pat his arm "I agree with you entirely, Shade. One of these days I will approach him to see how he is doing...but I'm happy that you believe that he deserves this chance. Thank you."
He listened idly to Makoto and Shade speak to one another and appreciated the calming company the two offered. He hoped he would be able to help Shade understand how the kitchen works at some point. If he couldn't, maybe Makoto could. He nodded at Makoto "Thank you. He deserves to have a good life after what he went through. I'm at ease that the two of you are so willing to keep an eye on him and make sure he's doing okay."
Aylin looked up at Makoto "Oh! I'm sorry...it's just that who Malik was before took my father away from me...twice. It's...it's hard to just say that I forgive him, but I know I should...and deep down I do, but it's so hard. He does deserve his chance at a new life, and I will support that." She said softly. "I will...I will." She assured herself "It's not fair to hold someone's past life against them. That isn't who they are anymore. They're a wonderful Digimon now, I'm sure of it!" she said sincerely.
Toki kneeled down and pat Aylin's head gently. "I'm sure he is." He reassured her. Toki looked at Makoto and nodded "I'm okay with spicy! A curry could be pretty good...balance that with some white rice...we could also make some yakisoba, maybe even some yakisoba pan...but it's up to you!"
Aylin raised her hand "I'm okay with spice too!"

Shade tilted his head to one side as makoto laughed; was something one of the two of them had said funny? He didn’t know so he just sort of smiled and just ran his fingers along the kitchen counter. The renamon-x addressed him again and he’d blink slowly. Recipes? That made sense that there would have to be some somewhere. He’d nod his head and brightly grin at that last part.
”Shade likes the sound of that. Taste testing and making something close to the DemiDevidrops. And… It’s more used between those that don’t get them as often than all of them from what shade knows.”
Shade gave a small shrug; he wasn’t sure if the dark area digimon were the only ones that did it. He’d fold his arms and consider quietly if this could be the case somewhere else. It didn’t really ring him true… but then again he didn’t really look into this sort of thing before so…
”Shade is trying his best to live a new life, so it would be unfair of him to not allow others the same chance. Or believe in them that they can do it. Maybe someday the both of you will run into him and you two can learn everything that there is about this ‘new’ mon that they have become.”
On that subject; he had experienced the same sort of his past life interacting with his current one to more of an extreme. Rather his past life being between when he was wilder and more out of focus… to now where they had partially managed to tame his wild nature. He’d flash a small smile to the renamon-x; squeezing back and if they didn’t pull away… Well he’d keep their hand in his for until they needed or wanted to break off from him.
”Shade hasn’t had any of those things before so… he will defer to your judgement on these things. But shade does know that curry is kind of common in whitewater? But he never had any.”
Then there was something else; Yakisoba? Shade would scratch at his chin; seeming uncertain. So many options! So many names! So he’d ask a question that probably… well wasn’t bad at all!
”What is the difference between all of them?”

With the returned squeeze of their hand from Shade, Makoto would smile both to him, and to Toki; happy to see that they were in agreement, that Malik deserved some peace of mind in this new life of his. Certainly, the actions of his past life would be a weight that's hard to move past or forget... But he was making a genuine effort to do it, at least.
And speaking of moving past or forgetting things... It sounded as though Aylin was having a hard time moving past the experiences she had been put through, due to Malik's past life. Makoto's expression would easily become sympathetic at this, and they would pat the little Lunamon's head as well - responding softly "It's okay, if you aren't ready to forgive him yet." in a reassuring tone.
"You sound as though you've been through a lot, and I wouldn't be surprised if there is some trauma on your shoulders as a result of this; losing a parent hurts terribly so. It's okay if you need space from Malik as a result of this, and it's okay if you still carry some negative emotions towards the things that have happened to you." They'd continue, their tone gentle and motherly. "Cope with those emotions and feelings at your own pace, and don't rush yourself to forgive someone if you don't feel ready yet."
"Just as long as you can let go of those emotions when it's time, and as long as you can still treat Malik with the courtesy and dignity that any person deserves - you put it well yourself, about not holding his past life against him - it's okay if you still need some time before you're ready to forgive him."
As far as food went though, it sounded both Toki and Aylin liked spicy, and Toki would even suggest making a yakisoba. "Ooooh, that's an option too..." Makoto hummed, tapping their chin thoughtfully with one of their free claws; still holding Shade's hand.
Shade, though, would - as expected - not entirely know what the different types of food were, besides maybe curry. As he asked about the differences between them, Makoto would hum thoughtfully; thinking it over. "What makes curry distinct from the other dishes we've suggested is that it's, typically, served over rice - a curry sauce with spices such as cumin, coriander, and pepper, cooked with meat of some form; the most common I've seen being chicken or beef." They'd explain. "It can have varying types of heat depending on the spices used, and it can be quite filling with the rice; while rice on its own is bland, it is versatile in that it typically takes on the flavor of whatever is mixed into it."
"Stir fry, meanwhile, is usually a variety of vegetables and sometimes meat being fried together in a pan, with light amounts of oil and typically high heat." They'd continue. "Peppers are a common ingredient in stir frys, hence why I suggested it for some spice; and Yakisoba, in fact, can be seen as a type of stirfry - adding in noodles alongside the usual vegetables and meat that you're frying. Yakisoba sometimes has its own distinct condiments or seasonings compared to typical stir fry, though. Yakisoba pan, meanwhile, is essentially yakisoba put on a bun like a sandwich."
"Noodles - or pasta - are similar to rice in that it can be bland, but very versatile in use. Even if you don't feel like making a stirfry, you can still usually mix noodles in with some form of sauce, and maybe some chunks of meat or vegetables, and it'll be good. Pasta is a very easy and simple meal to make, as a result; and can be made in a variety of ways."
The explanations, though, would gradually trail off here as the Renamon-X blinked a second to themselves, peering between the other three. "Ah.." They'd grow a bit sheepish, and softly laugh equally so; a shy hue to their smile as they remarked "I think I rambled on a bit there, pardon me darlings. In any case..."
Glancing over to Shade, Makoto would conclude "It sounds as though Toki's interested in either curry or yakisoba. If you don't care for vegetables, Shade darling, then curry would likely be our best bet; but if you wouldn't mind having vegetables, I could make us some extra meaty yakisoba; which would probably go wonderful as yakisoba-pan, if we have bread. How's that sound?"

Now that the subject of Malik was brought up and discussed, Toki sighed in relief, glad that everyone seemed to be in agreement about him. Someday he'll see to him and they'll be able to put the history of their forebears behind them. Aylin's own feelings on the matter were not lost on Toki, but he knew that Aylin just needed some time to think about it. She was hurt more than anyone else by Malik's past self so he couldn't blame her for how she felt right now.
Aylin nodded at Makoto's reassurance. She just had to remember, that Malik is not who he once was...it wasn't his fault. It was never his fault. She took a few deep breaths and relaxed somewhat, going back to her optimistic, cheerful demeanor.
Back at the discussion of food, it seemed that Makoto was already aware of much of the food that Toki had brought up, which made this much easier. He tapped his chin a couple of times and smiled "How about both? I'll get the rice cooker and a pot to stew the curry in. You can use a wok and get some noodles and vegetables frying." He suggested as he and Aylin gathered up the appropriate equipment and ingredients for what they were going to make "Aylin, could you grab some bread for all of us?" He asked.
Aylin saluted and wandered to storage to get some packs of bread.
"Might as well make this a big meal to celebrate your arrival! My cooking's a little rusty, but I'm sure this will turn out great." He said as he helped chop vegetables and cuts of meat for the curry. He couldn't help but laugh "Yakisoba-pan reminds me of my high school days. You'd have to make a dash for the cafeteria to even get a chance to order one with how popular it was. Knowing how to cook definitely makes it easier to get it whenever you want."
Aylin returned with some bread and got to work with the rice in the rice cooker. "A lot of this is going to be spicy, so be prepared! We'll get some milk just in case." She reassured, knowing how some people react to spicy foods.

Shade was honestly feeling rather happy at the moment; he could feel his tail wagging ever so slightly as makoto smiled to him. There was a little thumping of his core and he’d have to try to stop himself from smiling too wide… only to fail and show off his rather sharp teeth in a very happy smile.
He didn’t have much to say about losing a parent, he never had any. He never had any caretakers and it reminded him about how harsh the dark area truly was. His parents had been the negative emotions and dreams of others. Which wasn’t exactly something that was quantifiable. But he liked how supportive makoto was being to aylin; it was nice to see and it warmed his heart. Though he did seem to have something to say near the end of what makoto had in regards to all of it.
”Wasn’t there a saying… time heals all wounds?”
Shade rubbed his neck with one hand, gently keeping makoto’s other hand in his own. He liked this and wasn’t really wanted to leave for the moment. He’d sit there and listen to the explanation that makoto gave of the various foods. Mulling them over and sort of flicking his ears this way or that. Curry, Stir fry… and then Yakisobi. All of them sounded good. Though he didn’t stop listen to makoto; his eyes ;ocked onto them.
”No it’s fine. Shade didn’t know and now he does.”
He’d reach out to gently rub the top of their head, if they let him he’d let their hand go; but if they wanted to hold it for a little longer he’d smile and squeeze that hand.
”To be honest, shade didn’t really think much of them while on the move. But… That’s also because it’s hard to cook some veggies over a fire without pots or pans. Shade likes the sound of all of these...”
Shade felt his tail start to wag a little harder; hearing that toki was down for both well. Shade sort of wondered how he could help. So he’d ask exactly that!
”How can shade help? He has claws and his champion form can have many many hands if that’s needed.”
He’d hold up one of his hands, giving it a small wiggle and followed suit with an eager smile...

As Aylin's smile returned to her face, Makoto would smile as well; warm and loving, as they gave Aylin one last pat on the shoulder, before turning their attentions back to the subject of food.
With how everyone was agreeing on yakisoba and curry, it would be a bit of a flurry of activity as Makoto, Toki, and Aylin all got started on working on dinner - Makoto only now letting go of Shade's hand, so that they could start setting up the wok as everyone was gathering up ingredients, utensils, and equipment for this meal. At Shade's question of how he could help though, Makoto would glance over, before suggesting "How about you help get out some ingredients, dear; and once we have everything we need, you can help with chopping or stirring?" with a warm smile.
"Let's start with the rice for the curry so that we can get it cooking while we're fixing up everything else. Look for any bags marked as such, or otherwise bags that contain little white grains, about yea big." Briefly, Makoto would pause in their work and raise a hand to gesture a rough approximation of how big a grain would be between their clawtips. "It'll probably smell pretty bland, and the individual grains are hard and look as though they're slightest bit translucent - though are otherwise opaque."
Once Shade was off looking for the rice, Makoto would get some oil for the stirfrying - their tails swishing in a cheery fashion, as they briefly hummed to themself. They would make sure to pick out an oil with a high smoke point for this - as the wok would be getting quite hot if they were to do stirfry for yakisoba - and while they were at it, they figured they could do a marinade for the meat that they would be throwing into the yakisoba as well. Nothing that would take tooo too long, of course; maybe 10 or 15 minutes of marination would likely be enough.
Meanwhile though, Toki would reminisce about yakisoba-pan during his school days - to which Makoto would chuckle and smile warmly. "Certainly. And homemade food always has a certain charm to it, doesn't it?" They'd muse out loud, as they gathered things together. "And no harm in leftovers from a big meal, either; these should reheat just fine for someone's lunch tomorrow, if we end up making too much."
By the time that Shade would have the rice for Aylin to get the rice cooker going though, Makoto's tails would be curled around some ingredients for a marinade, as well as the bottle of oil they'd need. Seeing that that was in order, Makoto would nod, before smiling to Shade - mentioning "Seems like Toki already has an idea of what sort of meat he wants to use for the curry. Do you have any preferences in meat that we might use for the yakisoba? Feel free to pick out whatever catches your eye - or nose - darling."
"Once you have an idea of what you want, I'd appreciate it if you start cutting the meat up into strips about yea big -" Briefly, they'd pause to gesture. "- while I mix up the marinade, so that I can get them marinated faster."

Aylin looked up at Shade and smiled softly at him "Mhm...you're right. Some wounds take longer to heal than others, but yes. I want to move on, so I will. It's in the past, and being so focused on the past will only damage our future. There's...a certain strength in letting go."
Toki and Aylin saw how close Shade and Makoto seemed to be already and looked at each other with a smile as they left them be for a moment. Shade and Makoto helped each other out with their part in the cooking and both were grateful that Shade was getting the support he needed in the endeavor. They were both excited to see what Shade would think about the new food.
"Oh for sure." Toki said, agreeing with Makoto's sentiments on homemade food. Food was always special when it was made with your own hands or by someone you cared about. "Yep, if we make too much for tonight that means there will be plenty to eat tomorrow as well. Might as well not waste anything!"
Toki thought a nice soft beef would be perfect for the curry. It would absorb the flavors of the curry sauce and make it very tender for a melt in your mouth texture. As he was preparing the ingredients and getting everything set up, Aylin got started on the rice with the others.
It was a bit busy, but it got the group working together for something nice. "It's nice to work together on dinner, even if it's just little things throughout the whole process." Toki was always down to earth and never let anything bother him for too long. He enjoyed living day to day and wasn't the sort to flaunt his powers arrogantly or even really act like he's a leader. He was just one of them and happily cooked alongside everybody.
"Cleaning up this kitchen took ages, and even longer to get all of the modern appliances in here." He explained. "This place was abandoned for quite a long time, so Aylin and I had our work cut out for us to get everything in top shape."
Aylin nodded "It was mostly just us, too. We had some help by hiring people in Whitewater to help with the appliances, but it was still a lot of work, but we're glad we got to this. This has been amazing so far."

Hearing the suggestion that makoto had made shade pause; helping with finding ingredients and chopping or stirring once things were together? He’d slowly nod his head; looking uncertain for a moment.
”Bland… opaque. Shade will try.”
The Wraithgururumon sniffed at the air, picking through some of the cabinets; sneezing when he found where the spices were. Slowly closing it down and just brushing his fingers through his fur. It’d take a little bit for him to find the rice, the blandness of it was something he’d try to focus on and eventually he’d find the bag. It was marked with RICE and had three little x’s under it. Making him wonder how much it weighed. The wolf didn’t have an issue lifting the whole bag up and placed it on the counter. Flicking his ears this way or that.
”Shade likes meat. But… beef would be nice.”
He’d tilt his head to one side; flicking his ears a few times. Watching the renamon-x as they gestured. So they wanted it about that size? He’d eye his claws; this form wouldn’t be good at handling knives and the claws were… well a bit smaller than he’d like. But the cut of meat wasn’t too bad so he could probably just work with it?
Probably wasn’t a good time to show his champion form right now… but at the same time? The wolf looked hesitant for a moment before starting to pick out the meat from the fridge. There was a good assortment there right? So at least he’d have an easy time picking stuff out.
”....Cooking is so… strange sometimes. Shade used to eat nothing but roasted over a fire meat. But it never did much for his champion form. Shade fed off of negative emotions and memories for a long time that his body got used to it. But this smells much better than the stuff he used to find.”
He’d flick his ears a few times and stared at toki as he talked about cleaning up in here. He could only wonder how messy it was or how much needed to be replaced. Sure while he was in whitewater he got a general sense of what was ‘up to date’.
”Shade will give whitewater citizens one thing. They know how to make homes. When shade lived there during his… treatment? There was this small apartment they gave him. It was very nice but very very confusing.”
Shade was talking while his hands worked on the meat, cutting it into the strips that makoto had asked him to. He looked at one that was a bit too big and eased his claw through the middle. Snorting slightly as he felt the counter on the otherside. He’d have to be a bit more careful it seemed…
”Are there more places like this around here? The monastery shade means…”

Once Shade was able to retrieve the rice for Aylin, Makoto would smile warmly - reaching up to pat him on the back in an encouraging fashion. "There you go - you're doing great." They'd praise in a loving tone, continuing "Don't worry about mixups and the like - this is supposed to be easygoing, and this is all to help you get a feel for what's what, as far as ingredients go. When I start getting into the actual cooking, I'll teach you about that as we go, too; alright, darling?" Smiling gently, they'd repeat to emphasize "You're doing great, so far; and I can't wait for us to make an amazing meal together."
As Toki commented on how nice it was to work together though, Makoto would nod; their demeanor as warm as ever as they chuckled. "Very nice," They'd agree - continuing and asking almost rhetorically "It helps us all feel like one big happy family, working together like this, doesn't it?" It was enjoyable, spending time with other people, getting a chance to work with them and get to know them. This was something that Makoto absolutely thrived on!
When Shade mentioned how strange cooking was though, and his previous diets, Makoto would nod in acknowledgement; listening closely to the WraithGarurumon's words. "It's certainly a new experience for you, then, isn't it?" Makoto would question rhetorically - chuckling gently as they added "I hope that we make a good first impression, as far as foods go, then. Trying new things is always so much fun for me; and I'd love to encourage you to try new things every once in awhile, too!"
Once Shade began cutting up the meat into strips, Makoto would transfer those strips into the bowl of marinade - stirring it, to make sure that each bit of meat was evenly coated. All the while though, Shade and Toki both would be talking about Whitewater - which Makoto would listen to curiously, their ears twitching a bit. "This kitchen certainly is wonderful; it's got just about all the amenities one might need, to cook a delicious meal." They would comment with a smile. "It must've been hard to get everything hooked up, if this place is as old as it sounds it is, though."
And as for the question as to whether there have been more places like this, Makoto hummed for a second; thoughtful. "No doubt, there's probably other buildings with similar architecture out there - especially around here on Blossom Isles." Smiling, the Renamon-X would glance in Shade's direction - suggesting "Perhaps we can go exploring and sightseeing a bit, together, once we're both properly settled in?"
Once all the meat was cut up and properly marinading though, Makoto would let it sit in the bowl - explaining "We'll be letting the strips of meat marinade for a bit, while we heat up some oil in the wok for cooking, and chop up some vegetables. By letting it marinade and sit like this, the meat will take on some of the flavor of the marinade that I had mixed for it, while also becoming extra juicy and tender."
Which, with that in mind, Makoto would begin picking out the vegetables for the stirfry - shiitake mushrooms, scallions, peppers... As they brought out the vegetables that they would be using, they would glance over to Shade - asking "Do you mind helping chop up the scallions and mushrooms, while I chop up the peppers and cabbage? Just small pieces - about this size - " Once more, Makoto would gesture, whilst using their tails to retrieve a few bowls to put the chopped up vegetables in " - will do the trick."

Toki smiled at Shade "I heard about you feeding on the negative emotions of others. It must be so strange to have other forms of food after relying on that for so long, hm? It's a world of possibilities. So many cultures, so many dishes. Amazing scents, textures, tastes...there's so much out there to try and experiment with." He said as he began to simmer the beef and add in some spices to the pot.
"Whitewater is a nice city. I prefer it over the bustle of Terminus, myself, though that was before I came to love it here in the Isles. You should visit Sakura Vale, the city on the mainland. It's incredible. That's where you'll find a lot of similar architecture to the Monastery. We aren't alone here on the isles, we just happen to be in a rather isolated part of it." He said with a warm smile.
There wasn't much for Toki and Aylin to say. Makoto was doing a fantastic job guiding Shade and teaching him about the basics of cooking. It was honestly pretty adorable to watch as they waited for the next step of preparation. He paused for a moment when Makoto said they all seemed like a big happy family. There was a moment of warmth in Toki's heart. Was this what he wanted from this all along? He had his parents, but for most of his life he had no friends or any drive to make any. To hear someone say they felt comfortable enough to feel like a family gave Toki a sort of validation. The fact they felt at peace and comfortable here...Toki wiped his eyes as he teared up "I just wish...and hope...we can spread this feeling to as many places as possible."
Aylin smiled softly at Toki, knowing exactly what he was going through. She helped set up the plates and bowls along the table before she would go help the others with their respective parts of the meal. "Once the meat and veggies are done things should be all ready!" The smell of the food hung in the air and it was delightful "Oh it smells so good. I can't wait. Now once the rice is ready, use this to spread some along the plates or partially fill a bowl, depending on what you want!" Aylin placed something to scoop the rice on the table.
It seemed that Toki just had to wait for the meat to finish cooking. The vegetables and noodles were up to the others. He stretched and looked around "Yeah it was definitely a challenge, but after seeing what we're doing today? Absolutely worth it."

Shade paused and he felt his tail start to wag as makoto patted the larger wolf on the back. He’d manage a small smile and nodded his head; he probably would have made a few mistakes on his own. But with the fox offering to teach him how to cook? Well the larger digimon almost wanted to scoop up the other in a big hug.
”Shade would love that… and thank you makoto.”
He’d fidget for a moment and continue working on what they had asked him to do. With it being a new experience for him the wolf… well wasn’t entirely sure what he should do other than the strips. His claws were practically made for these things but… he couldn’t help but he could be more precise. Or that he could be more effective.
”Exploring and sightseeing sounds nice; especially after being settled in.”
He agreed with that part; unsure what to add. He’d return the gaze that was given to him by makoto. Managing a much larger smile to the fox; he was happy. His tail wagging a little more often and well.. He’d have to make sure that it didn’t overtake any of the ingredients. The wolf tilted his head as makoto explained what they needed to do with the meat.
Shade wasn’t really dumb; but some things were hard for him to grasp. He was glad that makoto was able to explain in such a way that he could understand. So this was one way of preparing meat so that it could be more juicy and tender?
”How long does meat prepared like this keep? Drying it out usually makes it last for weeks at a time even if it’s a bit… drier.”
The wolf stared at makoto as they gestured towards the scallions and mushrooms. He’d glance to his hands; uncertain for a moment if his claws would do the trick… maybe if he- He’d put a hand to his head and gave it a small shake. No if he de-digivolved while his work would be better his desire to do it would dwindle as his hunger was for something much different.
”Shade will try but he’s worried that his claws are a touch too big…”
He’d try to work his claws over the veggies; flushing a bit as his claws missed their mark and almost went into the counter. He’d try a few times over before slowly getting through some of them. His eyes flicked to toki and he’d slowly nod his head.
”Shade’s rookie form and shade’s champion form are both the sort that feast on the negative emotions or memories. The latter… is more filling but also so much more difficult to get. Requires… intricate knowledge and the desire for others to let go of… things. Shade prefers… actual food than it but he also knows that when you have to survive you… don’t always get to pick what you want.”
Shade sounded almost bitter on that last part; sure he believed in the survival of the fittest but that didn’t mean he enjoyed eating other’s memories. Others emotions. It was a painful process for some but there was one thing he never shared with others about it. He’d bite his lip and hearing toki start to tear up? Well he’d fidget again; the mushrooms and scallions slowly coming along.
”It is a good feeling.”

As Toki mentioned vising Sakura Vale on the main island of the isles, Makoto would nod and smile; explaining to Shade "Sakura Vale is essentially the capital city of the Blossom Isles, and the central hub for things such as culture, trading, and tourism around here. It's quite beautiful, and as incredible as Toki says; and I hope that you'll enjoy it, too, once we do set off to explore." Perhaps they could pick up an accessory or two for Shade, while they're out there? Ah, they couldn't help but wonder what the current trends of fashion on the islands must be, after having been away from the Blossom Isles for so long...
Glancing over to Toki, Makoto would smile in his direction - questioning "Speaking of, Toki darling... Have there been any big changes in the Isles, besides with the Monastery, over the past few years?" with a curious hue. No harm in being informed! "It's been a long time since I've last been here; I'd love to be caught up with the current goings-ons, if there's anything in particular going on at least."
With Toki growing emotional though, Makoto would glance over to him, with a warm and sympathetic glance. "Awww, darling..." They'd coo lovingly and comfortingly; giving him a gentle pat on the back with their tails, as their hands were currently preoccupied. "I'm sure we'll all be able to spread this sort of warmth wherever we go, dear. I can easily tell that you're a kind and loving soul, and I admire that greatly."
At Shade's question of the meat though, Makoto would hum; looking over the marinade. "This likely wouldn't be good for preserving the meat - you'd want to dry it or use plenty of salt, if you wanted the meat to keep for traveling." They'd explain - adding "When you're preserving meat for use around the house though, a fridge or freezer usually does the trick for keeping the meat cold - and thus making it keep for longer - without requiring to salt or dry it."
Shade seemed unsure of whether or not he'd be able to chop the vegetables properly, though... "Don't worry too hard if you need to take your time, dear; we're in no rush." They'd reassure him with a smile, continuing "This is good practice for you, learning to handle your claws more dexterously." Especially if Shade wanted to stay in this form longterm, getting used to handling smaller objects like this would likely be a precious skill.
Before long though, Makoto would finish chopping up their own vegetables - placing them in the bowls, before taking the bowl of marinading meat over to the wok. With the wok - and the oil within by extension - being nice and heated up, Makoto would take this time to begin emptying the bowl into the wok; a hissssss rising as the meat began to cook in the oil. They would mix it around, to make sure that it was all heating up evenly, before glancing over to Shade - explaining "We'll be frying the meat first, as we want to make absolutely sure that it's properly cooked through; and then we'll mix in the vegetables, and the noodles. Once everything is all cooked up properly, though, then the Yakisoba will be finished."
Speaking of... Makoto would step away from the wok briefly, to get the noodles out of the pantry - setting them down on a nearby counterspace for now.
