“Meow!”, screamed the fat red cat. The blinds were closed, the alarm clock had not rung yet, even the neighbors were still asleep. “Meooow!” screamed the fat red cat once more. Nao slowly opened her eyes. Dreams faded into distant memories in an instant. Just a second ago, the young woman was walking along a small countryside road, next to a row of blooming peach trees. There was another woman with her, they were holding hands, laughing at a weird looking giraffe on the other side of the road. And now, Nao was fighting with her senses to figure out where in the world the damned animal went. Quickly, even that thought left her mind, and a strange feeling of longing washed upon her. “I want to see her again”, said the half-asleep Nao to herself. “Mrrow…” answered the fat red cat. She did not care about her mistress’ night time crushes. Nao let out the longest sigh and groggily looked over her blankets at Mako and the whole room behind. From here, nothing was out of the ordinary. Mako’s bowls were full of food and water, no one seemed to have broken in during the night, the computer was turned on and all the windows were tightly closed. “Wha-What’s wrong kitty?, babbled Nao with a raspy voice. Go back to sleep, it’s not wakey wakey time yet…”Still absolutely unable to process anything, Nao pulled the blanket back over her face and went back to sleep. The warm embrace of her bed almost had the woman fall back into slumber, when a new, sudden thought crossed her tired mind. “Wait. Wh-why the hell is the computer turned on…” Nao grumbled. Again, she sighed in annoyance, before getting out of bed for real this time. The small apartment looked eerie at night. Without some intermittent rays of light from cars outside shining through the blinds and the constant buzzing of traffic in the distance, the place could almost seem like a different, slightly wrong distortion of its usual day self. Just like some of these weird locations that had become a popular fad on the internet over the past few months. Liminal spaces, people called them online. Nao smiled at that thought, maybe she could snap a couple of pictures real quick? No. First things first, turn off the computer, and fantasize about internet fame or relevance later. “That’s what you do when I’m aspee-... alse-... asli-... when I go night night, Mako?, said the sleepy red-head while petting her cat’s head. That’s not a toy for kitties, you know? It’s biiiig people stuff. Makes noise and lights and shit, like a sentient rock or something.” All the talking to her cat was really just a way for Nao to wake herself up now. She slowly made her way to the computer with her blanket around her shoulders and a deathly tired glare on her face. Indeed, it was turned on, and it was surely the noise from the fans and the flashing lights that got Mako all upset. Nao turned on the screen, as she didn’t want to just unplug the whole thing or force the system off. For a couple seconds, she hid her face behind her hands while her eyes adjusted to the sudden bright light of the monitor. “Okay Mako that’s not funny, when did you learn to change my desktop background?” mumbled Nao, completely aware of how insane that just sounded. But truth was, something was definitely wrong with what was on screen. In front of her, Nao’s desktop had been replaced with a weird pixelated image of an egg. A striped white and red oval shape shaking slightly from left to right, surrounded by weird lines of symbols she didn’t understand. On top of this strange sight, nothing seemed to work. Nao shook her mouse but couldn’t see any effect on screen, she hit control, alt and delete on the keyboard but nothing happened. And even when she finally tried to force the computer to shut down by pressing on the on button for a couple seconds, it simply did not do anything. Exasperated, tired, the mind still foggy and the eyes burned by the light, Nao just resigned herself to unplug the whole installation. She crouched under the desk and removed the plug from the wall socket. Finally, the screen turned dark and the computer stopped. This time, it was a sigh of relief that Nao let out. What was that? Did she get a virus somehow? In any case, she was in no state to actually investigate. She slowly crawled back to her bed and fell face first on the mattress. Whatever that was, it would have to wait until tomorrow. So, Nao fell back asleep, and the fat red cat stopped screaming. When Nao opened her eyes again, she was feeling so warm and comfy. Her whole body was just in the perfect position and she didn’t want to move even a single muscle. Right now, life was perfect. However, judging by the light sipping through the blinds, the day was well on its way. She grabbed her phone from under her pillow to check the time: 9:26a.m. The alarm clock did not ring. Nao’s face turned pale as her heart skipped a bit: she was late for work. The events of the night had completely left her mind and she just hurried to work, half screaming half crying. She grabbed the first clothes she found, didn’t eat any breakfast, didn’t refill Mako’s bowls and didn’t notice the strange egg waiting on her computer chair. In less than ten minutes, Nao was out and rushing to the nearest train station. *** Nao arrived on campus around 10:10a.m. What a shame for a teacher to arrive later than their students. Still stressed out of her mind, she rushed to the principal’s office to explain the situation and apologize for the trouble. Fortunately, she was just a couple minutes late for her first class of the day, and got out with just a simple slap on the wrist. Now, the real trouble was about to begin: face the students, apologize to them as well, and try to calm herself and get back on track. Nao swallowed her saliva, took a deep breath, and stepped into the classroom. All the kids were already there, it was time to show them what she was made of.

'So, remind me again me boy, what be so important about this here school that it deters you from doing what you want to do.' a pirate voice in the head of a teenager asked as the two of them were stuck sitting in class while no teacher arrived, it was pretty weird and Clayton didn't really know what to do about it except for sit down and get pestered by the voice in his head for the allotted time until they arrived.
"Hey, no teacher. That means we can leave! C'mon Clay let's go." A voice rang out shaking the teens shoulder as he made a joke to walk out of the classroom, however Clayton grabbed his hand and swung the student back into his seat with a quiet 'aww' coming from them as they kicked their feet back.
"Jin you know that's not what that means, just sit and bare it. I'm sure they're just running late at the moment. Maybe something with the train?" He had no idea, though Clayton went back to focusing for a moment in his own head. 'As for you, the main reason that if my parents found out I was skipping school they'd be on me like no tomorrow, I like having the house to myself so lets keep it that way.' That was a very selfish reason to do anything but hey, he was 16 it was what he was good at.
So Clayton just seemed to mess around with his D-tector for a bit, pressing a few buttons here and there and highlighting the spirits that he had at the moment, it was pretty neat seeing all three of them on the screen at the moment. Seems like he could fit two more in there. Highlighted on the water spirit Clay was startled as the door opened and the teacher finally came in, dropping his digivice on his knee and accidentally pressing a few buttons on it. Quickly he put it back in his pocket as she came through.
Normally Clayton wouldn't say anything about this, it happens. Not like he hasn't been late before. But the voice that was typically in his head did have something to say, only it wasn't just in his head this time. "Aye, Finall-" Clayton spoke, except it wasn't actually him. Clasping his hands over his mouth to stop himself from talking the teen got quite the amount of odd looks from people who knew him, a bit shocked he'd say something like that.
"I'm sorry, I don't know what that was. I'm sure you're late for a good reason." Did, did he just get possessed by his spirit again? He still felt the water spirits presence, but they weren't saying anything, probably afraid what they might say would come out of Clayton's mouth.

The amount of times where one can say that their teacher was late to class was pretty much always going to be closer to zero than anything. That, was what Sumire had told herself today. "Yeah, Clayton-san's got a point. Trains were running a little later than usual, so that might explain why. Besides. We have more than one class, so...what, you're gonna ditch school and avoid the other few teachers?"
For someone who was formerly infamous for skipping CONSTANTLY? That ought to be striking. Either way, she adjusted her hat--the only part out of place on her person given she was wearing a school uniform. "Just gotta wai-" Bingo.
Right on cue, the teacher walked in! "Ah, sensei! Good morning!"

With all eyes on her, Nao quickly walked to the teacher’s desk to set up her things. With a simple nod of the head and a wide “Good morning everyone, sorry for being a bit behind time.”, she addressed the class while unpacking. Kids were still chatting and making light-hearted jokes about it, but she kind of deserved it so she didn’t really mind.
Her eyes suddenly widened though, as she realized she had forgotten most of the documents she needed for today’s class at home. In the hurry, she left everything in the haphazardly thrown mess on her desk. The more Nao thought about her mistake, the more flashes of memories from the night before were coming back to her. The weird looking egg thing on the computer, Mako meowing all night long and…wait a minute. The egg. It was there when she left her apartment!? It took a single second for Nao’s face to turn from a shameful-stressed red to a sickly white. Large droplets of sweat appeared on her forehead as she struggled to find the rest of what should have been in her bag.
Without thinking of the situation, Nao let out a plaintive sigh and wiped the sweat from her brow, eyes closed and slouched over her desk. She stood like this for a couple seconds before realizing once again that she was not, in fact, alone with her thoughts. She tried to play it off as if everything was under control, but the harm had already been done, and she was ready for all the kids to laugh and make fun of her for weeks to come. Trying to get her composure back, Nao stepped away from the desk and moved to the center of the room to face the whole class.
“Anyway uuhh…I…I have forgotten your..uh, your tests at home. They’re graded already, don’t worry. I just, well, forgot them on my desk, sorry about that.”
It was the first time Nao actually felt this embarrassed in front of her students, and she very much didn’t want to feel this way ever again. She continued, slowly getting back in the right mindset. In english this time, of course, class had started.
“In any case, I really hope you have not forgotten your homeworks. We’ll take a look at that after the roll call, okay?”

The student seemed to shrink in his seat for a moment looking away from Sumire, seems he hadn't thought of that far ahead. Clayton just waved him off and gave a small thumbs up to Sumire as the teacher arrived finally, thankfully she didn't seem to of noticed his accidental outburst leaving Clayton to think to himself on just what that was. 'The hell was that about Captain? since when can you talk through me like that?' Clayton thought to himself as the pirate captain still said nothing, he felt his presence though it hadn't faded yet. 'Yeah, guess it's for the best you stay quiet for now. Least till after class.' Hopefully they could avoid making a scene.
Snapping out of his thoughts finally Clayton went back to focusing on the teacher in front of him, however he quickly noticed the sickly white look on her face as she looked around for something. "Sensei? Are you alright. You don't look too good." Was it because she got sick, she was late? Maybe a hard time falling asleep or something. Lord knows if it wasn't for his newfound love of taking naps in the digital world the same would've happened to Clay.
Though it was revealed what actually was going on, apparently their tests were uhh, not here at the moment. Which was particularly bad for Clayton considering he usually had to send screenshots to his parents, so they knew he was actually doing work well. Now it was Clayton's turn to look a bit paler. "Eh, Hey. Everyone makes mistakes sometimes right?" Easy for the dude with an eidetic memory to say. Though he did happen to see a few students breathing a sigh a relief, delay the inevitable he supposed.
Right, homework. Clayton managed to get it done during his time in the digital world, there was a small cut or two on the paper that seemed a bit out of place but ultimately, he could probably blame that on an accident and not his sentient sword friend attempting to read his English work. Placing it on his desk as he heard the spirit within him grumble something about the weird symbols on the paper.

This really was not Senri-sensei's day. Something that Sumire could empathize with, she hated forgetting her homework at home. Or anything at home, going home was a hassle in and of itself. "It's...a part of being human, yeah." Sumire added onto what Clayton was saying near immediately.
"Plus, if they're graded already then it's just a matter of handing them out tomorrow. Nothing to worry about, I guess?" Sumi mused. She didn't know much of being a teacher outside of what the Rosewood professors could tell her about the whole profession. Plus the fact it was tough. Especially with the kind of people at this high school.
According to Jingo a bunch of them were just Digimon in disguise. Crazy.
Of course, Sumi adjusted her hat with a small smirk of pride. She had managed to NOT forget her homework for a change, and was quite proud of it, given she had it neatly organized on her desk! "Hehe...!"
Now! It was just a matter of role call.

Nao smiled in relief, seeing the faces of the students in front of her. Fortunately, they didn't seem to hold anything against her. Amidst the chatter, both Clayton's and Sumire's worried voices reached the awkward professor. They're good kids, thought Nao as she turned to face the two teenagers. Her cheeks still pale, she smiled once more to try and hide her profound unease.
"Ah, yes...yes I'm doing alright, thank you. My...My cat has been sick all night and I had to bring her to the vet...And I didn't get much sleep after that..."
Nao's eyes shifted from one side of the classroom to the next in rapid succession. She was not a good liar, but how was she supposed to explain what had really happened when she herself didn't understand it at all? Not that anyone would believe her even if she could anyway.
"You'll get your test results tomorrow, I'll give them to your homeroom teacher so she can hand them out. In any case, you all did fairly well, so no need to worry about that."
This little interaction managed to calm Nao down. She coughed in her fist and quickly started calling every students' names to make sure everyone was there. In the classroom of twenty-four kids, two were missing. This actually made Nao feel better, at least she managed to show up. Once the roll call was over, the clock had already ticked off a good twenty minutes of the hour long lesson. No more time to waste. Without skipping a beat, Nao switched to english and adressed the class.
"Alright, let's see if you've been doing your homework seriously. Last week I asked you to write a little paragraph about your favorite book. Anyone wants to share what they've written with the class?"
Now, it was the kids' turn to shift their eyes to the side to avoid having to read their homework out to their classmates. Nao scanned the room, looking for the faintest glimpse of interest for the exercise. One kid was pretending to look for something in his bag to avoid being picked, another was already shaking of stress. The teacher sighed again.
"Well, Hijikata-san, what can you tell us about your favorite book?"
Sumire was the only student seemingly not terrified by the idea of speaking english, and Nao hoped she'd be able to get the get the conversation rolling and have the other kids talk as well. At this point, class had started, and Nao's worries finally faded away.

"Yup, if it's already graded then it shouldn't be a problem." Clay quickly agreed with Sumire, mostly just trying to convince himself at the moment but ultimately if it helped it helped. It was then that she mentioned her cat going to the vet sick, though her eyes kept moving and refused to focus on Clayton, was she lying? Maybe he was just overthinking it but... "Ahh, well I hope they make a recovery then." Clayton didn't know for sure but ultimately pressing the situation wasn't in his nature, she seemed rattled enough best not push the envelope even further.
At the sign that Clayton did well he gave a small smile, raising his fist in the air a moment before quickly putting it back down on his table. He was a bit worried all this digimon stuff had made him a lot rustier at this sorta thing. It would be practically bad if the half American failed at English after all, even if he didn't fully speak the language even at home. With the name call Clayton just responded like he normally did though used this time to check on the captain. 'So, what the heck was that about, since when can you use my voice to talk?'
"I know not boy, there be that time I possessed yee in order to stop you drowning but beyond that all of this be a mystery to me." he kept his voice low to make sure Clayton wouldn't be heard by anyone, it'd just look like he was talking to himself for a moment.
'Alright well until it goes away try and keep quiet, I am like 90% sure that you don't know English anyway and speaking like a pirate on a test is how my friend Jin failed his exam.' stopping that thought Clayton focused back on the task at hand, he didn't hear what she asked. Whoops.
Thankfully Sumire got called instead of him, which also answered what Clayton was supposed to not be zoning out on great! Gave him just enough time to actually get his notebook out with what he had wrote, just in case she called him next.

See, the fact that Sumire read was not something that was necessarily hidden about her. The problem here was that Sumi didn't HAVE a favorite book. Well, nothing really struck OUT to her as a favorite. Despite that, she had managed to surmount the challenge of writing a paragraph about her current favorite.
"Recently, I got linked a web serial named Worm--it's by an author named Wildbow. Now, you might think 'I thought this assignment was for BOOKS,' you are correct. It is--and Worm is not only long enough to comprise a book, but an adaptation to the literary form is in the works. It's about superheroes except not quite. Our protagonist is Taylor Hebert, a teenager with a superpower enabling her to control bugs. Pretty basic--she's like angsty Spiderman to a degree." ...Except Japanese Spiderman was kind of nuts.
"The real draw in the serial and future book is the setting, it mirrors a lot about Earth as we know it except humans started gaining superpowers after a man called Scion showed up. Usually a result of traumatic or stressful events in their lives. You can...kind of liken it to My Hero Academia as a result, but I feel like the settings only share a few similarities." A pause.
"Also the first villain's a dude who keeps getting stronger and stronger as he fights and eventually turns into a kaiju if you have him fighting long enough. It's the absolute coolest thing I've ever read."
"...Also, it's free to read online if you have a computer and an internet connection."

As expected, Sumire was the correct choice. While she didn't perfectly follow the question, her answer was well structured and kind of fun. Though her pronounciation still needed a bit of work she had gone out of her way to write something much more complex than what Nao had hoped for.
"Great work Hijikata-san! Now, has anyone read this web novel?"
Nao didn't expect anyone to raise their hand. After all, few japanese kids would go out of their to read fully fledged novels in a foreign language, let alone one only available on the internet. One student joked about having read My Hero Academia and another about loving the japanese version of Spiderman - at least they understood some parts of Sumire's speech - but not a single one had anything to add to the description Sumira had given.
In any case, the class continued without any trouble. Most kids had done their homework seriously and some nice conversations about a few foreign books sparked, notably one on Game of Thrones and another on Bakemonogatari. Fortunately, Nao had read those and was able to lead the discussion for a little bit. Then, as Nao wanted to ask another student to participate, the bell rang. Of course. That's what happens when you're late to work, thought Nao to herself.
The teacher quickly packed her things. A rapid glance at the clock to check if the bell was indeed on time. It was. And without a second thought, Nao stormed out of the classroom. She didn't give any homework to her students, didn't even look back and barely said goodbye. She didn't want to be late for her next class, after all. Though, in her hurry Nao forgot her phone on the desk. Unlocked, it was showing the time, a picture of her cat Mako as the background, as well as a peculiar icon. It looked like a red and white egg. As Nao closed the door, her phone vibrated : the strange app had just sent a notification : "Congratulations! Your egg is ready to hatch!"

Web comic huh, Clayton did recall he used to try and read a few of those. Lot of the time they ended up as cheesy romance stories and stuff like that, suffice to say though this piqued his interest a lot more. Maybe it was the setting or something. "Controlling bugs huh, probably pretty underrated as a power. There are some... Terrifying insects after all." Poison and many of them had the ability to fly, didn't sound basic at all to Clay so long as the author was creative about it then it should be able to work.
Class continued like normal, though in the back of Clayton's mind there was some lingering worries about that whole misspeaking thing him and the captain did, maybe being infused with a digital being beyond your understanding wasn't the healthiest thing he could be doing with his spare time. Though when he got a moment he checked his other spirit, the blade. That one never did something like that to him, then again, the captain was more vocal so maybe.
Suddenly Clayton's thoughts were interrupted by the bell ringing, shaking it off Clayton stretched his arms for a moment standing up, he was pretty unfocused the whole time but ultimately, he still learned a bit. Plus he made a mental note to check out what Sumire was talking about.
Oh right, home- oh hey the teachers gone. "Eh, hey teach w- and she's gone." Well that was fast, usually it was the students who were like that. Though as he got his stuff ready his eyes landed on a phone sitting right on the teacher's desk. "Oh, hey anyone know where her next class is? Senpai forgot her phone." Clayton walked a bit closer by it but didn't pick it up, just in case she burst back into the room because she forgot it. Though he did notice the words on it. "It's unlocked? An egg is ready?" Clay repeated the words on the phone in a confused tone.

While one could argue it was sad nobody had much commentary on the literary brilliance of Worm, the fact that Sumire had managed to spark a discussion about foreign novels in Japan? Well, she considered that an accomplishment. Something to feel good about herself for for a change.
Milady, is that...pride I see? That's a refreshing change.
At the end of class, though, Sumi had been prepared to wait for the next class...Yet, Clayton had noted that Nao had forgotten her phone. She rose and headed over, as knowing Clayton's luck? Things might have been about to get weird. "Egg is...ready? What could that mean?" She mused, before she promptly burst out the door and called out, "Miss Nao, you forgot your phoooone!"
...HOPEFULLY she didn't legitimately just run to her next class!

"Miss Nao, you forgot your phoooone!" Sumire's voice rang through the hallway. Unfortunately, her teacher had already vanished. Of course, Nao wouldn't be caught being late to two classes on the same day. Running to her next class, ignoring all the rules she was supposed to uphold, Nao made her way down the stairs three at a time and reached her destination in record time.
She entered the classroom, sweat running down her red cheeks. The students were not expecting their next teacher to be there already, case in point, the previous one was still packing her things when Nao barged in. The two teachers exchanged an awkward smile and a friendly nod. While her colleague finished her business, Nao instinctively reached inside her bag to grab her phone and check the time. She didn't need to know the time of course, the bell had just rang, but she hoped to escape the awkwardness by pretending to respond to a message or something. Now, she just had to find her phone. It's probably burried under the notebooks and papers I shoved in there before leaving the class, Nao thought. It was not.
Somehow, this day seemed to find new ways to get worse at every turn. Neo's red face turned a sickly white in an instant as she tried to retrace the steps she took since leaving her previous class. Maybe it fell from her bag while running down the stairs? No, she would have heard it falling, or someone would have seen it and gave it back to her immediatly...In any case, there was only one way to be sure. Nao bowed in front of an amused classroom, and apologized :
"Sorry, I have forgotten some notes in my previous class, I'll be right back. Thank you."
Her colleague, still there, answered with a faint laugh and a compassionate smile. Well, there went her hopes of not being late a second time in a row. Nao exited the room as fast as she entered it, and once again started running in the halls. Along the hallways, up the stairs again and right up to the room she had left a couple minutes earlier : nothing. Desperate and about to cry, she entered the room with her head down. Maybe she had simply left it there, on the desk...

"Wow, didn't even seem to reach her. If I didn't know better, I'd say she's the track coach..." Clayton mused as his hands went into his pockets for a moment. "I'm sure she'll realize and rush right back, feel a bit bad though. Seems to be going through some rough times." They were some teasing comments about Clayton checking the phone from a few other students which he just ignored for the most part.
Though taking another glance at it, the egg on it seemed really, familiar to Clayton. "Huh, looks weirdly familiar. Different color but..." It was at that moment Clayton felt a weird rush in his head, stumbling back a bit he saw something. A weird room with the egg, a room Clayton has known he has never been in, reaching out and taking it before...
And just like that whatever that memory was Clayton was experiencing he was brought quickly out of it by his teacher walking through the door. Stumbling back a bit Clayton shook his head regaining his composure, his face was a bit more pale then normal though. "Oh, uhh. Hey Senpai. You forgot your phone." Taking a step back so she could see it, though forgetting he could just grab it and hand it to her.
"Also some egg is hatching, er. Whatever that means." Clay hoped to shift away from, whatever the hell that was back into more important matters. Hopefully.
'Hey lad are you alirght, what was that?' the pirate asked, thankfully in Clay's mind instead of out his mouth this time.
'No idea, but hopefully no one noticed...' Yeah it would've been hard to not noticed Clayton zoned out like that, usually he's always focused...

"Ooof....You can't just do her like that, man!" Sumi chided--seriously, despite her rough start, the teacher was actually one of the better ones in the school! Moreover, Clayton seemed to have some sorta dizzy spell...Uh. She chalked it up to whatever was going on with his digital stuff.
Really.
Seriously.
Though she couldn't help but peer at the phone- ... "A Digitama...?" She uttered lowly to herself, adjusting her hat. Even if she was in uniform she never left home without her hat. "...here, Sensei." She spoke, grabbing the phone and quickly offering it over to Senri when she finally returned.
Poor woman looked like she was having a rough one...
