A long tired yawn left Megan's lips as she sat at a table in the food court. It has been yet another long and exhausting day for the doctor-in-training. She honestly was beginning to wonder how much more of this she can take.
"So... much... work... Between all the paperwork I have to do for work and all the tests my teachers are giving me, I feel like I'm going to explode." She complained, "Thank goodness tomorrow is a day off. I just want nothing more then to sleep the whole day away. Completely recharge myself. If only I didn't also have that essey that I need to get done too."
Across from Megan sat what appeared to be a young teenage boy who just sipped his soft drink as he watched Megan speak. Nodding his head whenever she appeared to pause. He couldn't hear a single word she spoke. Instead all he could gather were some bits and pieces he could read from her lips. Yet he believed that was the point. It's been a tough week for his tamer. She probably thought this was a good way for her to vent.

At another table nearby, Maia sat with her sketchbook open on her lap, and a small coffee drink on the table. Occasionally, she'd lift her eyes up to examine the area, before returning to drawing. Tapping the eraser of the pencil on the page, the teen tilted her head. The picture was still of Shiro, a white cat-like monster, eating a pile of donuts from the first time that the tamer had encountered Digimon. For some reason, she just couldn't get the monster to look right. Maybe he looked too much like a cat? She had been working on the drawing, on and off, for a few weeks, now. It was about time that she actually finished it.
"Coffee's gross," a small voice whispered from the purse that was also sitting on the table. The Digimon inside probably couldn't smell much other than the heavy scent.
Lifting the cup to her lips, the tamer paused before she took a drink, "I could always pour it on you," the girl mumbled, quietly enough that most people wouldn't even notice, before taking a sip of the liquid. Placing the cup back on the table, the girl lowered her eyes back to the sketchbook, scribbling at the fur of the creature in the drawing. "You're not supposed to talk anyway," she reminded the creature in the purse, who only let out a small grumble in response. He was the one that promised to be quiet in public if she brought him with her, after all!

Megan stretched as she sat there. "So then. Now that I got all that off my chest. Anything new with you?" She asked with sign to her deaf companion.
"Not really. Finally finished reading that book you suggested." Kami replied.
"You did? What did you think of it?"
"It was fun for what it was. I think you over hyped it though." Kami signed with a slight shrug.
"Well it's nice to see you enjoyed it. I suggest you read 'Restaurant at the End of the Universe' next. Though I should warn you that the series goes down hill after that. It doesn't become absolutely horrible or anything. The sequels just aren't as good."
Kami nodded before giving a small stretch. "Oh... By the way. I think you should know that there is another digimon near by. Can't say I know exactly where though."
"Oh... I'm guessing from the fact that your telling me this now that it's not dangerous."
Kami shook his head slightly, "I don't believe it is. If I'm to guess it's probably just another tamer that came here with their digimon. Nothing to get to worried about. Just thought you would like to know."
"Alright then. Do you think we should try to find them and speak to them?"
"Whatever you prefer?"
Megan seemed to get a little peeved at that response. "I'm asking for your opinion." She signed with some inflection in her hand movements.
"In that case let's just stay here for a little while longer and wait to see what happens. Make sure they don't end up causing any trouble."
Megan paused to think about Kami's suggestion for a bit before nodding in agreement. Experience has taught her that it's always better to be safe then sorry. They didn't want to find out about an attack that happened after they left.

Now, Maia was sketching in the scenery more properly around the drawing of the Digimon. Pausing again, to think of what else needed added to the picture, the girl accidentally dropped her pencil, which clattered onto the ground. "Great," she murmured, making sure nobody would step on it, before reaching down to pick up the item. Once her eyes were level with the table, she could see a Kudamon's nose poking out of the opening of her purse, trying to see what she was doing.
"Ha-ha," the little monster mocked, before eyes went wide and he ducked his nose back into the purse, catching a glimpse of his tamer's glare.
Setting the pencil on the table, the blonde huffed a small, "you're going to get us in trouble," before looking around to make sure nobody had noticed the fox-ish creature in her bag. Luckily, he had gone unnoticed, from what she could tell. But, during her brief people-watching, she noticed two people at a table nearby signing to each other. Normally, she'd have looked away, but she was curious, and couldn't understand what they were signing anyway.
Of course, this was Japan. Maia couldn't understand the gestures. Much to her dismay, it would be obvious that most people utilizing sign language in Japan would not be using ASL. The unspoken language seemed to give people a way to be close on it's own. And, that's when Kuu decided to end the train of thought that the girl was having, muttering a, "you're staring, Maia," before going quiet again.
The girl's eyes widened, realizing that, yes, she had been staring at the two for far too long, and quickly signed, "sorry," in ASL, in the case that either of them had noticed, even though there was still a language barrier between the two styles of signing. The tamer quickly adverted her gaze, looking everywhere except the people that she had been staring at. Well, that seemed awfully conspicuous, even though she wasn't guilty of anything other than zoning out. What if some strangers thought she was being a creep? Should that honestly matter to her? For some reason, it did! Maybe, they wouldn't have even noticed it!

As both Megan and him converse with each other, Kami couldn't help, but notice a teenage girl watching them. It wasn't all that uncommon for him to catch someone just staring at them like that. He bet it's not everyday for most people to see people speaking with sign language, so they were bound to be curious. Yet then he caught the girl do something he didn't quite expect.
"I'm sorry miss. Did you just sign sorry?" He signed in ASL. Kami could of swore he saw her just say 'Sorry' in ASL. It's hard to mistake a sign like that for much else.
Megan turned towards the girl as well. Judging from what Kami just asked she guessed that the girl just said sorry in ASL. That made her curious to know if the girl could truly speak ASL or just happened to know a few signs here and there. She did hope for the former though. It's always nice to meet someone else who can 'speak' sign.

Despite trying to avoid looking at the two, it was glaringly obvious that she had been noticed. The boy at the table had begun signing, while looking at her, and, at first, she was going to pretend not to notice, but she had recognized the signs now. Did he switch to ASL for her? Oh... Oh no, that actually meant that he knew both sign languages? Now, he'd really think she was eavesdropping! Maia couldn't tell if this was exciting or distressing, considering she hadn't met anyone in Japan that could have a conversation with her when the stress kicked in too badly to speak.
Hesitantly, the girl lifted both of her hands above the table, trying to think of what to respond with. What didn't come off as her just being creepy? Still, one of her hands twitched, establishing if it would be weird if she even responded. The teen could pretend that she hadn't noticed the other person signing to her, but she couldn't bring herself to be rude like that. After all, she had been staring at their conversation, which was rude enough. Ah... What was she going to 'say'? Should she apologize again? Curling one hand into a fist, she started with, "yes," before pausing again. Should she explain herself?
"I didn't mean to stare. I don't know JSL, if that makes a difference," she paused, using finger-spelling for the abbreviation on 'JSL', as she wasn't even sure the gesture for the term. It wasn't really one of the terms that anyone had taught her. Who would have thought she'd ever need to use it? "It's uncommon to see other people signing. I guess I got distracted."
Kudamon, being inside of the purse, had only noticed that his tamer had gone silent, and the sound of pencils and erasers on paper had halted. Why was she being so quiet? Was everything okay? "You alright?" the monster whispered, softly. He didn't want there to be a problem. What if she had just abandoned him in a food court?!
"Shhh," was the only response his tamer would give him, in the form of primarily just exhaling through her mouth, so it wouldn't confuse the person she was signing to. After all, if the boy could read lips too, she couldn't really have a conversation with her purse!

"I understand completely. It's no problem at all." Megan signed in ASL as she jumped into the conversation, "Like you said. It's not everyday you see a couple of random strangers using sign language."
"Yeah. Besides it's nice to converse with someone that's not Megan for a change. I'm Kami by the way. K-A-M-I." Kami then added. Signing his personal name signs for both Megan and himself before spelling his name out.
"And I'm M-E-G-A-N. Though you can call me Megan like Kami did if you want."
It honestly made Megan happy to see that this girl didn't apparently know JSL. She didn't want to explain what Kami and her meant exactly when they were discussing digimon just now. She wasn't exactly sure what excuse her exhausted mind would have came up with to deflect suspicion. Chances were that it wasn't going to be a good one.
Well at least she didn't need to worry about that now. Besides Kami seems pretty happy. It's been pretty rare for Kami to communicate directly with someone other then her. So she could guess how much he really cherish moments like this. Perhaps she'll give him another moment or two before reminding Kami that this girl probably had other business to attend to then to talk to some stranger she just met.

At least the two didn't seem offended at all that Maia had been watching them! In fact, they seemed pretty happy. Based on Kami's statement, the girl assumed that he was actually hard of hearing. Not having paid attention to the duo prior, she had to wonder if Megan was, as well. Not that it honestly mattered, considering she could understand them just fine.
"My name is Maia," she paused, briefly, after signing her personal name, "M-A-I-A." It had been quite a while since she actually had been in a position to introduce herself in sign! The tamer must have found it pleasant, though, because she was smiling about it. It was weird how she could actually find two people that knew how to sign something she understood in a completely different country. Now, if only she knew that they were also aware of Digimon, she might be a little concerned at the coincidences. But, she didn't, so she wasn't.
"It's nice to meet you both," she signed. Ah, but... they had been talking before. Hopefully, she wasn't deterring them from something important! "I didn't interrupt your conversation, did I?" After all, she had been rudely staring at them, and then rudely cutting into their conversation! Maybe, she needed to learn better manners!

"No no. Your fine. We were just having a friendly chat is all." Megan replied with a small smile on her face, "I just hope we aren't keeping you from anything important. Kami here tends to get pretty excitable when he finds someone else to chat with."
"Hey! You don't need to tell her that. At least not that bluntly." Kami signed as his holographic cheeks grew flush with embarrassment. A sight which illicit a small chuckle from his tamer.
Kami gave a small sigh as he regained his composure. He really wished Megan wouldn't tease him like that. Even if she was telling the truth. It isn't often he meets someone else who knows sign language, so he likes to take full advantage of the opportunity of the situation whenever he gets the chance. He has a question he wants to ask first though.
"Excuse me. I hope you don't mind me asking, but are you deaf or hard of hearing?" He asked curious to see if Maia was like him or just someone who happened to know ASL.

"No, nothing important," Maia signed, more relieved that she hadn't been butting into a deep conversation. "I was only drawing. Nothing that has a deadline." Shouldn't she have been doing homework or something, instead? Or outside, playing with Kudamon, who was becoming progressively more irritated at the silence. Not that the tamer actually had any homework left untouched, and sometimes it was nice to be inside. And, by 'sometimes' she actually meant 'all the time.' But, letting a hyper Digimon run around the house wasn't a good idea.
Still, she smiled at the comment that made Kami grow red. It certainly wasn't a bad thing to get excited about! In fact, Maia was pretty happy to have found people to sign with, too. Even though it wasn't her primary form of communication. But, it did further her belief that the boy couldn't actually hear. Or speak, maybe? Either way, a question had been posed that needed answered.
"Ah," she murmured, shaking her head.
"No, my dad taught me when I was a kid," the girl signed, a little hesitant now. "I hope that doesn't affect anything," after all, what if he was disappointed that she wasn't actually in need of the language. Though she was pretty certain that she already knew the answer, Maia still felt the need to ask, "and, if you don't mind answering. Are either of you?"

"I'm deaf. Megan isn't though" Kami replied. If he was disappointed about Maia not being deaf at all, he didn't show any signs of it. His face instead plastered by a small smile of one who's in good company.
"Yeah. I actually learned from my father as well. Well I guessed it would be more accurate to say that I was raised by it. I'm probably more capable speaking in ASL then English." Megan explained before giving a friendly chuckle.
Kami's gaze drifted over to Maia's sketchbook on the table as Megan 'spoke'. He was curious to sneak a peek at what to see what exactly Maia was working on. It was hard to tell from this angle, but it appeared to be something cat-like in nature. There was also something oddly familiar about it.
As his attention returned to the others, he audibly gulped as he looked at Megan. Her dagger eye stare revealing that his attempt of peeking at Maia's sketch didn't go unnoticed. "Sorry. I should have asked first." Kami quickly signed to Maia, unsure if she had noticed as well. "Do you mind if I take a better look at what you drew there?"
It was probably to little to late to ask now. Megan had already explained to him how it was common courtesy to ask first a couple of times before. A sketchbook was kindof like a diary, and not all artists are comfortable to share them with the world just yet. Though, to his credit, he only was able to catch a quick glimpse of it. And from what he saw, it looked pretty decent.

At least it was a good thing to know that one of the two was actually deaf. Sometimes, it made it hard to tell when there was really no tell-tale sign. Maia noted to stick to signing, so that she wouldn't let Kami fall out of the loop, then. "I'm just happy that you know ASL, too," the teen signed. After all, they wouldn't be able to have a conversation if JSL was all that Kami could understand! "Does that mean you're not from around here, either?" Maybe, that was prying a bit too much.
Speaking of prying, the young boy seemed to be curious about what she had been drawing this whole time! Oh, uh... The girl looked at the sketch, contemplating. It looked mostly like a cat. Shiro was pretty good at being passed off as some sort of cartoon-cat, despite the effort put into making him look accurate, right? Digimon didn't necessarily look like they belonged in real life, but some of them could fit the bill well enough. Plus, no normal person would just look at it and go, "yup, that's a Digimon," if they didn't know what one was. It was pretty unbelievable that a real cat would eat donuts, anyway.
The blonde would have felt bad not to let the younger boy look at it, anyway. Even if some of the unseen pages were strewn with the weird creatures that she had met, such as a Patamon and Impmon. For Maia, a lot of her drawings really were her diary! A way to remember all of the things that she had experienced. Lately, it had been the best way to ensure that she wouldn't think she was crazy if her Kudamon suddenly vanished or anything. It was proof, to her, that they were real.
"That's alright," the girl quickly signed, trying not to make Kami feel bad. "You can look at it. Thank you for asking first, though." With her response finished, she moved the sketchbook to be more easy for the boy to see. If he wanted to take it for a moment to look at it, she wouldn't hesitate to let him, but that didn't mean that it still didn't make her a little nervous.

"Thanks" Kami signed before picking up the sketchbook placed in front of him. Now that he had a better look at it, he could see that the sketch was of a strange looking cat eating donuts. An odd choice for a drawing for sure. Though, then again, he's definitely seen weirder.
Megan watched for a second as he examined the picture. He never seemed all that interested in art before, so she kind of wondered why he decided to take a look at Maia. Could it just be because Maia knew ASL that he wanted to show some interest in what she was working on?
Probably.
"No. Neither of us are native in Japan. I lived most my life in Washington D.C. back in the good old U.S.A. My dad is actually a professor at a university over there while my mom runs a local clinic." Megan explained to Maia with sign, "Kami..." She then stopped suddenly as she felt Kami reach over the table to tug on her sleeve. His other hand obviously trying to pass the sketchbook towards her.
"What is it Kami?" She asked the disguised turtle before taking the sketchbook. There she immediately saw what exactly Kami wanted to show her. It seemed while she was explaining her past to Maia, Kami had flipped through some of the pages to see some of Maia's other work. With the one he showed Megan being a pretty accurate sketch of a Patamon and an Impmon.
Megan looked up at Maia as her mind raced for a second. She wondered how exactly she should react to seeing the sketch. It was to accurate to be a coincidence. So did that mean this girl has had contact with digimon before? Megan's mind then went back to when Kami told her about the digimon he sensed nearby. Could that have something to do with the girl as well?
Megan took a deep breath as she closed the sketchbook and passed it back towards Maia. "That's actually a pretty good sketch. Seems almost lifelike. How long have you been drawing like that for?" Megan asked as she made her decision. All she knew for certain was that this girl has had contact wity digimon some time before. Nothing else. So it was not a good idea to reveal her own knowledge about digimon just yet until she was absolutely certain.

Maia 'listened' to the young woman's explanation of where they were from. She seemed plenty interested, intending on even asking a few questions, until Kami had collected Megan's attention. There was a small jerk in her breathing, as she shifted to try to see what page he had flipped to. How hadn't she thought that there would be some sort of reaction to the art? Of course, it couldn't be that easy to just show someone her sketchbook like that! Mentally, she was kicking herself for not refusing the request.
When Megan looked back to her, she tried to provide a confused look. After all, she wasn't entirely certain what was going on in the other person's mind. Absent-mindedly, a hand went to touch her pocket, where her Digivice was hidden. It was still there. All was good.
Reaching out, she took the sketchbook back, she watched Megan signing again. Oh. How long had she known about Digimon, anyway? "Thank you," she signed, first, thinking of how to reply to the rest of the question. "I worked really hard on making them look realistic," she tried to cover. It was the truth, after all. She'd spent forever on making the creatures that surely didn't feel like they were real, look as realistic as they were. "Maybe a month and a half. It's pretty experimental," she added. Yeah, she was probably busted. But, she was going to play dumb until she really couldn't anymore.
"Is there a problem with the drawing?"

"No no. Not at all. I just thought that Megan would be interested in it is all." Kami explained. Despite his words ringing true, he could feel a tinge of guilt lurking in the depths of his mind.
It didn't help matters much that Megan reacted to that picture in a completely different way then he expected. He had expected her to leap at the opportunity presented as she's done many times before. Yet instead she's chosen to play dumb. What exactly was going on in that mind of her's? Could she be worried about something perhaps? For now Kami decided to follow her lead. He just hoped this was the right choice.
"So you've been experimenting with that technique for a month now. That takes some dedication. What exactly did you base those two off of? Surely something must have inspired you to draw something like that." Megan asked, curious of how Maia would answer.
