Digging for Fossils! [Amelie/Elliot/Tetsu] [Career]

Post by Ayumi on May 6, 2018 17:38:27 GMT
The sun bore down on the Shining Sea, its white grains sparkling. At its edge, a young woman and her purple dragon stood, looking across the vast dunes. The dragon had a huge backpack, filled with shovels, brushes and various other tools and gadgets on his back. "Are you sure anyone will come? Not everyone might think the way you do." Ayumi was wearing her sunglasses, yet still shielded her eyes with her hands as she looked into the distance. "Listen, if they're open-minded science folk, they'll come out of sheer curiosity, ok?"
Ayumi had put up a request at the Terminus Request board. It read "Helpers wanted! Fossil dig in the Shining Sea! Meet us at the Trailmon Station near the desert!". Solomon had been unsure, as the Digital World was not known to produce fossils, yet Ayumi was insistent, the conditions that formed the Shining Sea had been too perfect to *not* preserve fossils. And even the best network had garbage data! She had been so serious about it, she even crafted a simple scanner to show what a piece of garbage data belonged to before! Being this enthused, Solomon could not help but get taken along by her enthusiasm, too. And now, the two stood at the station, waiting for people to arrive.

A black haired boy, aged 11, rode on the back of his partner Gryzmon. Currently, the boy wore warm clothes although probably less than what required from this snow heavy area. That is because he used to live in the colder place, being in Hokkaido and all. Although that he came to the train station not for the fossil digging, his clothes would make people thought that he's there for that business exactly. To protect his eyes he brought skiing goggles. His backpack also full of some stuff that might be useful for exploration. It's pretty much as tall if not taller than his own height. Truth to be told, he's just carrying these for the sake of exploring the new area. He have no idea what to bring, so there comes strange stuff like shovel, pickaxe and bucket. He also needed those in case these materials can be used for his shelter building project.
"Is it too heavy, Gryz?"
"...More than it's too heavy, I kinda wonder how could you lift all of that, Tetsu," the bear Digimon answered. "But no, no worries. It's easy enough for me. It's just like carrying two of you anyway."
"Is that so? Good then!"
When they arrived at the station, the boy dismounted and put down his backpack. Once again he ran a check on what he might be missing. He did bought some food, tent if needed, cooking utensils... looks like everything is here. Tetsu smiled.
"Well with this we're ready aren't we, Gryz? To Shining Sea we go!"

Tools? Ready. Willingness to get her hands dirty? Ready. Warm clothes? Ready. Hype due to spending more time with Ayumi? Ready!
That was pretty much everything Amelie needed for this small journey. To spend a relaxing day in the company of her fellow friend and club member, along with a couple of strangers that could probably become good friends if given enough time. One small trip through Trailmon and a good deal of walking later...
This wasn't the first time Amy was looking at a salt-based desert, but those were magnificent nonetheless, no matter the world where they were in!
Now, only to look for the relatively short girl. Maybe her egg had finally hatched? That'd be pretty cool. Where could she be...
Oh, there she was! Some figures in the distance probably meant that the group was already assembling. With a pretty big smile on her face, the brunette waved in their direction. "Heeee~y! Ayuuumiiiiiiii! I'm here!"

When Elliot had first gone to the Digital World, he honestly didn't pay it much mind. It was a weird world of weird monsters with weird powers working on weird logic. Nothing really seemed to make sense, so why question it much? Occasionally he noticed something that piqued his interest, but he was usually quite content to move past and keep his life going. It didn't help that there was really no book for this kind of thing, so the most he could do was ask other humans or Digimon and hear their opinions on what was going on. The answer usually ended up boiling down to either data or magic. Not very helpful answers.
Since his time away from the Digital World, that started to change. In general Elliot was a bit more mature and attentive of a person, both due to the mediating influence of his new spirit and due to his own growth as a human being. He was also choosing to go back to the Digital World by choice, rather than letting obligation keep dragging him back again and again. It left him a lot more time to stop and smell the roses, so to speak, and left Elliot with a greatly renewed appreciation for the Digital World.
Appreciation turned to curiosity, and hearing about fossil preservation sent that curiosity into overdrive. Elliot snatched that flier up and spent the entire rest of his day packing.
Having his mother learn about the secret helped too. Whereas once Isaac and Elliot's packing could best be described as haphazard, now Elliot had quite the care package being taken with him into the Digital World. There was a jacket if he got cold, a little bag of vaguely home-made goodies, a deck of cards if he got bored, a spare walking stick, and even a sleeping bag! Today in particular also saw him adding a small shovel and duster to this daily package, considering the nature of the mission. With this kind of support behind him, what could possibly go wrong?
That was why the ride over to the dig site went by for Elliot in a flash. He dismounted off of the Trailmon, looking up to the sky and letting the warm, dry sun settle on his face. The Digimon World really was beautiful, wasn't it? It felt like the first time that he could truly see it this way.
Now all Elliot had to do was find the rest of the dig site. He began marching into the sands towards the rendezvous point, humming a merry, gentle tune.

And there were the people coming! Ayumi waved at them all. "Oh, hi guys! Welcome to my expedition!" Oh! And there was Amelie too! How great! Ayumi waved at her as she approached. "Oh! Amelie! Hi! I'm really glad you came!" She smiled, and then remembered that Amelie hadn't met Solomon yet! "Oh! Before we go, let me introduce you to Solomon!" Ayumi pointed at her partner. The Monodramon looked Amelie over, and then bowed. "It is a pleasure to meet you, Miss Amelie." His voice was as monotone and robotic as ever, but the bow lent some credence to his words.

Hmmmm? Huh, while he was coming here with the thought of his own, it's seem that he has encountered some people who apparently here for a reason. The tall oneechan with "flaps" on her hair seem to be familiar with the oneesan who said something about "her expedition". She did also bring some tools. He wondered what are they gonna take honestly. He's totally unaware of what business of these people's "expedition" after all. The boy looked at his bear who just looked back questioningly. Ah well... Looks like none of them know, but at the very least they maybe can join the entourage.
"Hey," Tetsu greeted with a friendly wave. "Are you guys here for something? Um, you know, calling it expedition and all..." by now it should be obvious that the boy just happened to be there at a coincidental time instead of somehow reading the flyer at Terminus. "It sounds fun though, can I join?"
"What about the mineral digging?" Gryz asked the boy.
"Hmmm... well, I guess that can wait, or we can do it together with them. It's like shooting two birds with one bullet!"
"Hitting two birds with one stone," Gryz corrected. "But that's fine too. You need to introduce yourself, Tetsu."
"Oh right, geez, that was rude of me. Name's Tetsu, this huge guy is my partner Gryz," he pointed at the fiercer looking Gryzmon that seem to have seen better days. Not only he's bigger than most of Gryzmon, his fur also on the darker end of the shade, closing to black, and with various red marks running on the fur. Despite so, the Gryzmon's face is calm and instead could be described as 'cute' with his near permanent zen-like face (=w=) plastered on it.
"Nice to meet you ladies and gentlemen of course," the bear added.

It was good to see that Ayumi was being as cheerful as ever! Being her extroverted self, Amelie didn't doubt on hugging her friend as soon as she closed the gap between the two. "It's been so long! How have you been?"
That question would probably be something for later, given that right now, she was gazing with amazement at the polite, even if a little emotionless Monodramon. "Pleased to meet you, Solomon! Hope we can be friends!"
Probably enough for introductions, at least in regards to Ayumi and Solomon. The others were bound to arrive sooner or later, right? In fact, the first arrival would be somebody who wasn't aware of their small expeditions, but that seemed friendly enough at glance. Amy waved at them as they introduced themselves.
"Pleased to meet you two, Tetsu, Gryz! I'm Amelie, and these two are Ayumi and Solomon." She made a pause, adopting a bit of a thoughtful expression. "You know, I'm not sure if stumbling into this place by chance is a good or a bad thing, given that the whole place seems a bit... salty, but if you want to participate, I think there shouldn't be a problem. Right, Ayumi?"
Since she was the one in charge of the expedition, she figured it was okay to ask her... even though it was pretty much a formality.

Ayumi nodded. "Yes, welcome Tetsu and Gryz, nice to meet you! You two can definitely come along, the more, the merrier after all!~" She then pulled out a gadget which displayed a map of the area. One spot was marked with an X. "See the X? That's out destination, there, we shall dig for fossils! This spot seemed primed to contain fossil beds based on my analysis!" Solomon nodded, and patted the huge backpack. "I have brought digging utensils for everyone, plus some refreshment and some snacks. I do reckon a salt desert would drain our hydration quite quickly." "Are you guys all ready to go?~"

"...Fossils?" Tetsu seem to wonder if he heard right. He's not sure if there are fossils after Digimon died... To make sure about this, he looked at Gryz questioningly, who looked back at him and looked pensive for a while.
"...I mean, it's entirely possible... there are a lot of unexplained thing in digital world... Items from real world that shouldn't exist, the vending machines that keep being restocked despite no one is there to replenish the stock, you seriously would think by now there's something like floating upside down Taj Mahal... But of course that's just me. We might found something."
"...Hmmm..." Tetsu winced at this thought. Sure it'll be interesting if there is fossil down there, but... He felt like something was wrong. Can Digimons really leave something when they died? Aren't places like cemeteries and whatsoever are like symbolic for them? A lot of that place seem to be 'guarded' for whatever reason, but it felt like places where you get back items that you might have back in your past life or whatever...
...But there's a benefit in this doubt. He's sure of it. "Alright, I don't know much about fossil digging, but I'm pretty strong myself, so if you need any help that require a bit of manpower, I can help."
...Of course this might sounds redundant with his partner beside him, but the boy seem to be enthusiastic enough. He want to know if there are any Digimons that might not exist at present time but actually preserved in fossilized state or something.

That was it! With a wide smile, Amelie briefly side-hugged Ayumi as sign of camaraderie and pumped a fist up in the air.
"It's decided, then! Let's go and dig some history up!" It seemed like, while a bit small, their team was a capable entourage, and that's what mattered right. Not to say that Solomon seemed to be a really efficient digimon. "Thinking about everything from the get-go, right? You sound like an awesome digimon partner! I'm just a little jealous of Ayumi now..."
Of course, that was mostly her being silly and throwing random jokes, but there was a measure of truth in her words. After all, who wouldn't be jealous of having somebody who took care of you and that could carry stuff in a pinch. Win-win, really!
"So... the X, right? How far from that place are we right now?" She asked as they began walking. Hopefully, it wouldn't be too far!

Ayumi began walking, waving Tetsu and Solomon along and talking as they walked. Her face was beet red from the hug, but she tried to swallow the confusing thoughts in her head. Now was no time for crazy anger at herself! "Yup, I know where that is, my mapping device can only display a small area, but it can lead you to the target in real time, a bit like a SatNav!" Indeed, a small, flashing arrow showed their position, and judging from it the digging spot was...quite close by, actually! They would need to walk half an hour at most! She then turned to Tetsu. "Yup, fossils! Look at this place! It's an ocean that got dehydrated god knows how long ago! That's an ideal area for fossil generation! If not here, then at least we proved that the Digital World does not produce fossils!"
Despite Solomon's facial expression not changing, he still very clearly blushed at Amelie's compliment. "Ah, I just try my best, really. She adores me and accepts me. The very least I can do in return is to be a good partner for her."

Salinity makes it easy for you to get dehydrated, huh? But this time around Tetsu did not come here without preparation. The boy grinned smugly. "Heh heh, I might just somehow encountered you oneechan recently, but it doesn't mean I came here without solid preparation! I'm here with this!" the boy clicked a button on his jacket, which materialized thin veil of energy that coated both him and his bear. He also put on his visor just in case.
"Well, adventure's waiting, let's go!"
Perhaps being too excited to see what's going on, the boy charged ahead. Gryz only could sigh wryly. "Sorry about that, as you can see he's still a kid, but he doesn't mean bad. The kid just... well, really love adventure I guess..." Gryz tried to explain. He stood up and cupped two paws in front of his snout."HEY TETSU, CAREFUL OF WHERE YOU RUN TO! Geez..."
Quite a distance in front of the entourage the boy just laughed.
"...Speaking of which, are you two new to Digital World, ladies?" the bear Digimon tried to make a small talk as they walked toward the destination. He might be relaxed, but he's alert enough to protect his partner if there are hostile Digimon that would have funny thoughts that his partner is a snack or something.

A more mischievous Amelie would've probably prodded Ayumi a little bit more, considering that her blush had been... well, pretty obvious. Not everyday the girl's face decided to show any color, and this was one of the rare exceptions! However, they meant business in here, and as fun as teasing her friend could've been, that probably would've made a pretty bad impression on Tetsu and Gryz.
Maybe later! For now, she was pretty interested in that gadget "Oooh. That sounds pretty nifty. Where did you get it? Most tech breaks down as soon as the barrier between worlds is crossed. Unless... you got it here? That's pretty resourceful!"
Tetsu's own excitement at this small journey and the fact that he was also prepared to face the harshness of the desert was also something worthy of attention. And of promptly waving off Gryz's apology. "Don't worry. I don't have to be a clairvoyant to see that the guy means well. I think he'll be an asset in this small journey! You should calm down and relax a bit, you know? This is meant to be fun!"
The same could be said about Solomon, frankly! What was up, with people getting bashful and blushy? One or two times were fine, but thrice? And she was the one that was supposed to be weak to flattery! "That's the Ayumi everyone knows and loves, honestly! But I think you're a pretty good guy yourself. Most digimon partners I've seen haven't been... the best bunch, even though there are some notable exceptions! Like you, or Gryz, or Mizu."
And now, she was bouncing from conversation to conversation. Gryz's own question was one that the brunette hadn't really expected, but that didn't mind answering either! "Relatively, I guess. Less than a month in my case. How about you and Tetsu? Have you been hanging out for long?"

"Ah, yes, we, uh, haven't been in with the Digital World for more than two or three weeks. But I already spent a -lot- of time researching it, because it's so fascinating!" Amelie mentioned her gadget, Ayumi grinned in response. "Why, I made it myself! I got a little Personal Storage box in Terminus where I keep all the gadgets I cook up back home! I make the plans, then build them here so they don't get wrecked in transit!" She then turned back to Tetsu, who was running ahead. "Ah, don't run ahead too far, or else you'll get lost!" Not that he was likely to get lost, they were almost there, after all.

"Hah, well, we got our share of problem, can't help it if a Papa Bear got a bit worried," Gryz would say to Amelie. "Think it me being a bit overprotective, because, well... He can overexert himself a lot. Tetsu just love to prove himself to be an asset if that can't be more obvious. I dunno what stems it, but he seem to... want to grow faster than he should be. So I have to keep reminding him that it's fine to take a breather now and then. Be a kid, you know?"
Hmmm, a relatively new human? And one really new at it? The bear wondered just how much these two know about the world that not even he know all that much despite living in it. "Hmmm, I see. Been partnered with Tetsu for almost half a year your time now, ladies. Digital World isn't all that new for us, but we had to take a break for about three months because Tetsu was facing an exam. His score haven't been too flattering either, and his mother wasn't quite amused, neither his father, so he had to cram a lot. The moment we returned we heard there are... ah, 'expansion' in Digital World, so we returned here in hope to explore new area. We're thinking to explore the Bayou soon too, but we'll probably avoid the sea a bit, got a bit of problem there."
Gryz turned his head around to both Amelie and Ayumi. "...Though I must say, I wasn't really expecting something quite like this. A dried sea, out of nowhere... As you heard before, we thought that the sea's crystals are made out of quartz or something, so we're trying to get few samples for our own project."
