Arachnophobia [RANK A; CONTENT WARNING]
|
Post by Andrei and Mimi on Dec 7, 2020 7:09:38 GMT
Before we start, here is a blanket warning for the thread that this may contain disturbing content; particularly when the thread begins ramping up! If you don't like plenty of spiders/insects, parasites, potential body horror, digimon getting nommed, or paralyzation being used in potentially terrifying contexts, this may not be a fun thread for you!
It would be a chilly morning, when the call for help would first be made - and it would be a chilly noon, by the time that those who answered the call began to arrive at the ranger's outpost in the Eastern Timberlands - not far from Rosewood, just on a winding path that led deeper into the Server Woods. The grounds would be blanketed with fallen frost-crusted leaves that would crunch underfoot, and one's breath would hang in the air in white puffs - all of which were clear signs of the shift from fall to winter. Though the path would normally be more clear and trodden than this, from travelers regularly passing through, any keen-nosed or keen-eyed Digimon would be able to tell that those aforementioned travelers have been awfully scarce as of late; which wasn't a huge surprise, given the present troubles. The Ranger's Outpost was a simple one - a building large enough to house maybe a handful of employees, with a chimney billowing with smoke and the lights inside being on the clearest signs that somebody was home. Out in front of the outpost, would also be signs - billboards of notifications, missing persons posters, and the like - as well as signs outlining warnings on how to be safe while traveling in the woods, as well as reminders to put out your campfires properly. However - all of these would be overshadowed by a large poster that seemed to be put up relatively recently. !!! WARNING FROM SERVER WOODS OUTPOST !!!
THE SERVER WOODS ARE CURRENTLY DEEMED UNSAFE FOR CIVILIAN TRAVEL, DUE TO REPEATED DISAPPEARANCES. IT IS HIGHLY ADVISED TO AVOID PASSING DEEPER INTO THE WOODS - AND IF YOU MUST, TO STAY IN GROUPS AND HAVE AT LEAST ONE COMPANION OF ULTIMATE STAGE OR HIGHER FOR SAFETY.
STAY ON HIGH ALERT AT ALL TIMES, DO NOT SPLIT UP, DO NOT STRAY FROM THE MAIN PATHWAYS, DO NOT APPROACH UNFAMILIAR DIGIMON UNLESS THEY ARE CONFIRMED RANGER PERSONNEL, AND TRUST IN YOUR INSTINCTS IF YOU FEEL THAT SOMETHING IS WRONG.
FOR FURTHER QUESTIONS, PLEASE INQUIRE INSIDE. Before long though, upon nearing the Outpost, a keen-eyed individual might notice how the curtains in one of the windows would shift - had there been someone peeking outside before? Apparently, yes; as the door would soon open, a tired-looking Petermon poking his head out as he gazed upon everyone. "Ah... Are you travelers? Or were you the ones who answered our request?" He'd question, sounding as ragged as he looked. The poor guy probably hadn't had a restful sleep in awhile, and it likely didn't take a genius to figure out why. Without waiting for much of an answer, he'd blink a bit before shaking his head at himself - murmuring "Wait, no; of course you're the ones who answered... No travelers have been stopping by in days..."Making a heavy sigh, the Petermon would open the door wider - gesturing for everyone to enter. "I'm sorry, the past while's been rough for me; come, get out of the cold - we can talk inside, if you all would like. Do any of you have preferences in hot drinks?"

Post by Kenny O'Hara and Skadi on Dec 7, 2020 9:14:39 GMT
It wasn't just the cool air that was making Kenny's hairs stand on end.
As he and Skadi, the latter both carrying her BFF on her back and leading the group at the exact same time in her burly Canandemon form, trotted through the dark path, already the young man could feel something was off about this place as of now. Apart from his breathing, neither opted to speak just yet, lest they'd end up luring anything over to the team's location.
Even the normally happy-go-lucky Skadi knew this all too well. Just ask her about her experience with the Bleached.
As soon as they reached the cabin, the large poster would be the first to catch their eyes. And needless to say, they got the warning very quickly. Considering the reports about the 'nest' nestled deep within the heart of the forest itself. If at the very least, both of them knew that her swift SilverGrademon form and her tanky Markhormon form were more than capable of taking on whatever the nest was going to throw their way.
So taken in by the poster, the Petermon calling this place home was quick to unintentionally knock the two out of their trance the second the door opened, they themselves turning their head towards him. That same gut feeling in the young man's stomach threatened to rear it's ugly head once more at the mere sight of the raggedy Fairy Digimon. Would it be rude to ask just what the hell had happened to him?
...yeah, probably.
Still, one jump off the Canandemon's back and de-evolution into Skadi's fun-sized Valaismon form later, and the two were ready to introduce themselves. Kenny went first, "Yeah, sorry we didn't warn you we were coming today beforehand, but my name's Kenneth O'Hara, of KIZNA. And that here's my partner, Skadi." He barely had much of a chance to gesture to him before the geep/shoat (delete as appropriate to preferences) would playfully 'salute' him, standing tall and proud, even if she came nowhere close to dwarfing the humanshape Digimon.
"Ready and willing to help, as always!" She bleated with enthusiasm towards him. Even in a potentially stressful situation like this, she knew a little bit of optimism would help to carry the team a long way.
Despite the Petermon's not-unjustified apparent concerns, Kenny would be quick to reassure him, patting him on the shoulder before the two would take their seats, "It's ok, man. Shit's been a little hard recently. I don't blame you." His sympathetic smile would be enough to tell the Petermon that he could honest to God, Buddha and Arceus relate to.
Once they had taken their seats, however, both of them knew what they'd like to drink, "Oh, uh, yeah, if you can, can we please have some hot chocolate?" He answered, with the Valaismon adding on with a nod and a kind smile.
...probably not the healthiest choice for going on a potentially dangerous mission like this, but hey, better to not die with any possible regrets, right?

Post by Alan Pantell on Dec 7, 2020 15:30:09 GMT
Alan watched the leaves crunch, crunch, crunch under his boots. The chilling air brought with it a familiar feeling for the young human, memories of the cold reality against his face while he trudged to the school bus stop, far too early in the morning to make any sense. Perhaps there was a feeling of nostalgia? No, "nostalgia" wasn't the right word.
Rather, he wondered what his old classmates, those timeworn relics of an age gone by but a few years ago, were doing now. The trans artist he had gotten along with so well his first year in high school. The uptight boy who would never keep quiet in the face of a historical inaccuracy from the history teacher. The boy who solved Rubik's cubes competitively. The "troublemaker" who liked to sit in on classes that weren't his and wait for the teacher to notice. The autistic boy with whom he had bonded for all four years over their shared lack of initiative when it came to picking their partners in class.
Would they all be doing something different now if they knew they all had another option for their futures, beyond the hand the tyrannical grip of human society had dealt them? Mayhap one or two of them had already figured it out. Wouldn't that be a pleasant surprise?
Bleck. Alan had had enough of the bus-stop weather, he thought, switching on his EV Suit and flipping his heavy orange jacket's hood down to regain command over his peripheral vision.
"Oh... do you not want the fire anymore?" Speaking of peripheral vision, there was Levi, the flame-armored dragon walking beside Alan, holding one of his flames aloft with one claw. There was a hint of dejection in his voice.
"No, no," Alan chuckled, "We can use the extra degrees. Maybe put it away before the park rangers sees it get too close to anything flammable. We don't want to give them anything else to worry about."
Stowing the fire hazard known as fire just before the door, the pair graciously accepted the invitation inside, assuring the Petermon that yes, they were some of those who had answered the call. It was only polite to affirm such a thing, even if it was obvious, especially given the warning outside the door. "I'm Alan Pantell of... myself, and this is Levi!" "Good to meet you! I'd ask how you're doing, but..." "...it'd be better to ask how we can help."
Inside they saw nothing but familiar faces, each recognizable for different reasons. The Petermon shared a face with a cryptic Petermon they had met before, and the young shepherd and his very small flock... had been met before, a varying number of times depending on which version of events the reader chooses to believe. Either way, they waved to them as friends, glad there was no need for introductions. "Hot cocoa for us too, please!" They took a seat where they could and waited for everyone to get settled.

Post by Kaya Matsui and Hawkeye on Dec 8, 2020 2:00:11 GMT
"Ah-CHOO!" Hawkeye would loudly sneeze from the cold day, despite wearing white earmuffs and a light green scarf to try and keep himself warm. He was even lightly hugging himself with his wings to try to preserve a bit more body heat. "Ugh, I hate the cold... Kaya, are you sure you want to help out with this? I'm not saying they don't deserve help, but the way Digimon have been disappearing..."
"Of course I want to help," The thirteen year old Kaya Matsui told her partner, brushing away her newly dyed redish-violet hair as she turned to look towards the Hawkmon. "The Server Woods is where your special spot is, and I want to protect it. We've handled worse things before, haven't we?"
"Erm, that may be the question of the day there," Hawkeye said as they arrived at the ranger station, which looked like a pretty big cabin in the woods. There was a relatively new sign at the front that basically served to showcase just how serious this situation truly was. The two definitely did feel like something was wrong when they had entered the woods today, so maybe they truly were getting in over their heads here.
"Uh, I'm... yeah, I got nothing," Kaya admitted in defeat. Well, they were already here, they may be at least some use to the group, right? They were the last ones to walk in, so opening the door revealed to them two humans and three Digimon: a sheep, a tall blue dragon with armor, and a fairy/ranger-esque Digimon that looked absolutely dead inside by this point, making Kaya's heart skip a beat when she spotted him. "Ah-! Uh, I mean, hello! We're here about your missing Digimon problem... I'm Kaya Matsui, and this is my partner Hawkeye."
Now of course, Kaya found the little sheep Digimon absolutely precious and if this wasn't a legitimately serious situation, she would have definitely given her many headpats by this point. Heck, even the tall fire dragon was adorable in his own way as well! But of course she couldn't do that, as she and Hawkeye both needed to act professional here.
Once Kaya and Hawkeye took their own seats, Petermon asked if any of them would like a hot drink. Pretty much everyone responded with saying they wanted hot cocoa, and honestly neither Kaya nor Hawkeye could think of a better choice. "Hot cocoa for us too, please!"

Inside the Ranger's Outpost, it was rather cozy and homely - made equally as an officespace for the rangers, and as a place for travelers to rest and get the news before they headed deeper in to the woods. On the left, there was a front desk - and one could easily spot the occasional digimon in a tizzy over paperwork, as they moved back and forth between the hallways beyond the desk.
On the right, though, would be a more cozy-looking living room or lobby area of sorts; a few couches with throw blankets and cushions set up around a coffee table, near a crackling fireplace. Nearby, would be a long counter-space with the sort of fixings you might see at a hotel's breakfast bar; a coffee maker, various mix packets for things such as hot cocoa or coffee, a bottle of creamer, a fruit basket, etc.
Most notably though, would be that someone was sitting at one of the couches - a D'arcmon, wrapped up in a fluffy warm blanket, nursing a cup of tea. She, too, didn't seem as though she was doing too well - her eyes past the mask that any D'arcmon wears looking red and puffy, as if she had been crying. As she noticed the presence of the others, she quickly reached a hand under her mask to wipe at her eyes, before setting the cup down on the coffee table; perfectly quiet the whole time, aside from a brief sniffle.
As everyone began introducing themselves and requesting some hot cocoa, Petermon would nod - a squint at the corner of his eyes implying a tired smile, as he spoke "It's good to meet you all; though..." Briefly, he'd pause mid-sentence to yawn. "... I'd certainly wish that it had been in better circumstances. You can call me Petermon." His gaze in particular would linger on Kaya for a second, before sighing to himself - shaking his head as he moved to the counter to begin making some hot cocoa.
(A keen-eared digimon might be able to hear, as he murmured under his breath "And I'd certainly wish that we weren't having to rely on children for this, for their sakes...")
The D'arcmon, quietly, would glance over at the others - before adding in a soft voice "I'm... D'arcmon." with a small nod. She seemed withdrawn and unsure, to say the least; her gaze staring at her own reflection in the surface of her tea.
"Speaking of... You holding up okay, D'arcmon?" Petermon would call and glance over to the angel - and though she'd startle a bit, visibly jumpy, she would shakily nod, responding "Y-yeah... Thank you..."
"Do you want me to explain the situation to them, for you?" Petermon asked, as he worked on mixing together the hot cocoa for everyone.
"I.." Briefly, D'arcmon's gaze would flick over everyone, before back towards Petermon. "... Go ahead. P-please." She'd finally respond, her voice briefly choking up. "Please excuse me..." Picking up her cup of tea, D'arcmon would stand up - awkwardly shuffling to another room; Petermon's expression sympathetic as he watched her leave the room.
"... Sorry about her." The fairy digimon would eventually sigh. "She's been through a lot. I'm sure her nerves are pretty rattled; and the last thing she probably wants is a reminder of what she just went through..." Moving between the counter-space and the coffee table, Petermon would set down cups of hot cocoa one by one as they were made - beginning to explain "She was part of a group who had gone in the woods to try and investigate the recent disappearances - though her group had been ambushed, and captured, and she was the only one who managed to escape safely..."
Briefly, Petermon paused to yawn - sitting crisscross on the floor, next to the table. "... The first thing we know about these disappearances though, are that they're kidnappings, no doubt. And the perpetrators are a group of spider digimon - preying on weaker digimon, and bringing their victims back to what we believe to be their lair." Taking out a map, he would unfold and lay it out across the coffee table, for all to see. There were a few locations and paths - including the outpost itself - clearly marked.
"Thanks to D'arcmon, we have an idea of where the lair is - at this area, we circled here." Petermon would trace a finger around the indicated circle; a location deeper within the Server Woods. "Dokugumon, Kodokugumon, and an Arukenimon are our confirmed sightings, the former two in respectable numbers whilst we've only been able to confirm a single Arukemon; we theorize the Arukenimon is the leader of this swarm, and that they and the Dokugumon are kidnapping digimon to feed their Kodokugumon young, from what D'arcmon can remember the Arukenimon saying, during her group's own capture."
"It's likely that D'arcmon's group - as well as the other disappeared travelers - will still be there, and that a good number of them will still be alive. Our best hope, is that you all will be able to attack the lair and clear it out - preventing the Dokugumon and Arukenimon from harassing any more travelers, and rescuing any survivors within."
Glancing up towards the assembled group, Petermon would yawn a bit, before asking "Any... any questions...?"

Post by Kenny O'Hara and Skadi on Dec 12, 2020 3:02:06 GMT
Already as Kenny noticed the relatively young Kaya joining as part of the team, he could feel his concerns well up inside of him. She was, after all, a young kid. And this was him, a grown man, talking from experience with many a brush with death to his name. Hearing the Petermon mutter his concerns about this just made Kenny bite his lip a little; one part of him wanted to tell Kaya to just go home, for her own safety. Especially after passing the huge warning sign back there. With Alan and Levi, at least, they had shown quite a bit of skill and moxie at the challenges they faced so far.
But that was pretty much small fry compared to that utterly broken D'Arcmon sitting near them. Neither he nor Skadi knew what to say; Skadi especially starting to feel her ears slowly droop as glance glazed over her. She had to fight off the urges to just get out of her seat and give her a reassuring cuddle. Just something, anything she could do to help. But alas, all she could do as of now was just watch her walk off, before letting out a sad sigh as she tilted her head down.
Without saying a word, Kenny just lightly pat her on the back.
Regardless, they'd happily take the hot cocoa and thank the Petermon before both would listen to his explanation. And quickly, they knew why D'Arcmon was so broken in the first place. And who could blame her? From the look of things, she barely made it out alive herself. From what looked like a nest hosting the perpetrators in the first place. The two would lean in to study the Petermon's map - up until he mentioned a rather familiar sounding Digimon...
Archnemon. While they knew it would be completely unlikely that this one and the one at Golden Week were not one and the same Digimon (especially since the latter just had a group of rag-tag mooks who were quickly shut down by peaceful protest, leaving her to lick her wounds after leaving her high and dry), they knew what the species in general were capable of - highly powerful, versatile webs and corrosive toxins.
Oh God.
Oh, yeah. Questions. Kenny was first to speak up in response, "Uh, will we be provided with any special protective gear to potentially prevent us from getting poisoned or something?" He asked. Yes, the two did have their own gear ready to go, EV suit and everything. But surely specialized protective gear wouldn't have gone amiss, right?
...right?

The sight of D'arcmon was a sobering one. Alan and Levi usually approached their missions with a sense of adventure and curiosity, but this digimon was clearly traumatized, and now wasn't the time for either of them to be acting like the Chippendales Rescue Rangers (the two of them often disagreed on how the show's name was spelled.) They put on serious expressions and, aside from Alan fidgeting with his digivice to retain information better, stood as still as was reasonable for them.
Of course, the apparently excessive youth of one of the volunteers had not been lost on the young man, but what was he to do about it? As far as he knew, the Digital World had a way of protecting many tamers from more than they could handle, so it would have felt hypocritical of him to suggest that Kaya could possibly be "too young." He and his partner held fast to the belief that everyone deserved a life of adventure, with emphasis on the word "life," so for now, they kept respectfully quiet.
The explanation they had been given was a thorough one for what it was, but the party would need as much information possible for the greatest chance of suggest. Alan spoke up. "I... do have a question," he said, and lowered his voice. "Did D'arcmon happen to have the displeasure of witnessing any of what happens to the victims after they are captured? If she escaped before that, or if she does not wish to speak of such things at this time, I understand."

Post by Kaya Matsui and Hawkeye on Dec 20, 2020 17:55:18 GMT
The first thing Kaya and Hawkeye would notice upon walking into the ranger station was the D'Arcmon that was sitting on the couch, wrapped up in a blanket and drinking tea from a mug. It was hard to see through her mask but she had obviously been crying before the group had walked in. She wiped her tears and remained quiet when the others did walk in, but it was clear that she had been through something... well, horrible. Hawkeye understood how she must've been feeling quite well, as he himself was in a similar state at a significant point in time...
The second thing Kaya would notice was just how Petermon and what she presumed to be the sheep Digimon's partner silently judging her, of course because of her age. At this point she really didn't have the energy to fight back against them, especially since they didn't say anything out loud about it. Besides, with how the D'Arcmon here was holding back tears, now was just not a good time for arguments.
The fairy Digimon introduced himself as Petermon, mentioning mid-yawn that he wished they'd have met under better circumstances. D'Arcmon introduced herself next; she sounded weak and defeated. Just what exactly happened to her? Maybe Kaya was getting in over her head a little bit with this...
Petermon went on to explain that D'Arcmon was part of a group that went to try and investigate the mysterious disappearances, like that this current group had gathered to do. Unfortunately her group was ambushed and captured, making D'Arcmon the soul survivor of her group at the moment. Kaya as silent as she gave a look of empathy towards D'Arcmon, while Hawkeye definitely knew what she was going through now. "I'm... sorry to hear that, D'Arcmon. I know exactly what you are going through."
Petermon continued, stating that the disappearances were kidnappings committed by a group of spider Digimon: Dokugumon, Kodokugumon and Arukenimon, with the latter hypothesized to be the leader. He pulled out a map and pointed to an indicated circle on the map where their hideout was, thanks to D'Arcmon. Kaya held a hand over her mouth when Petermon described that the kidnapped were going to be fed to the young Kodokugumon. Digimon eating Digimon... she knew loading was a thing, but that couldn't be the same as literally eating another Digimon!
While most pre-teens would probably have had second thoughts by this point, Kaya was even more determined to try and save these kidnapped victims like Petermon was requesting from the group, along with making sure these spider Digimon don't harass any more travelers. Petermon asked if any of the group had questions, which both human males had asked. Hawkeye glanced at Alan in disapproval when he asked his question though, while it was a good question this was just... not the time to be asking such things. Still, it would be D'Arcmon's decision to answer that in the end.
Kaya couldn't think of any questions, unfortunately. She just wanted to go in there and stop those spiders as soon as possible... if that WAS even possible, at this rate.

Both Kenny and Alan would have questions, it seemed - the both of them respectively asking about protective gear and the potential fate of victims after they're captured. Both good questions, even if the latter was a bit prying - Petermon would briefly consider both questions, before he'd widely yawn, and then speak.
"Sadly, equipment won't be able to be provided... We had tried to equip some of our own staff members, to investigate the situation; though they inevitably got abducted as well, meaning that we lost the gear..." He'd mutter, sighing heavily. "We aren't made for huge infestations like these; most stronger feral digimon tend to be solitary sorts. We've been tight on staff - and money - ever since, as a result; it's a miracle we were able to put together as much as we did for a reward, let alone continue to keep the paperwork flowing."
"And as for what happens to the victims after they're dragged off, well... We don't know, at least not for sure; as you said, D'arcmon escaped, and she's not comfortable with sharing much beyond the necessities." Petermon began, yawning once more. "If I had to hazard a guess though, the spider digimon are likely using webs and/or paralytic venom to keep their victims subdued. Webs are expected with spider digimon, including with this swarm, and D'arcmon's report confirmed that they employ the latter as well..."
"Which does remind me, that they do employ a couple varieties of poisons; acidic and paralytic. Not much you can do about the former, unless you've got an ability to directly treat or resist such things... But the latter, the paralytic venom?" Petermon began, managing to stifle the urge to yawn this time around. "Seems to respond to even basic healing abilities... Ain't immediate, but it clears up pretty quick afterwards, from what we understand; makes one wonder how it works. 's the reason why we made particular mention of bringing healing on the request."
Briefly, a Logamon would step into the lobby - a cup of what smelled like coffee in his hands. He'd quietly nod to the others in a respectful greeting, before handing the cup to Petermon. "Ah... Thank you." The fairy digimon would respond, the two sharing a nod before the Logamon returned to the hustle and bustle going on behind the desk.
Taking a big sip of the coffee - and wincing a bit from the heat - Petermon would let out a heavy sigh, before turning back to the subject at hand. "It's rough. It's been rough for everyone out here." He'd state, casting a tired, yet hopeful, look over the assembled group. "Do any of you have any more questions, or would like me to help guide you all in the direction of the den?" He'd question - pausing briefly to blow over the surface of the coffee, and taking a more careful sip this time - before continuing "The sooner you all can stop the swarm, the sooner the forest will return to normalcy..."

Well, shit. It should go without saying that the two did prepare for this mission with all the standard prerequisite gear, as expected, but any possible special gear was pretty much out of the question. But with things going the way they were currently for Petermon's group, they could at least understand why.
They weren't ones to put unnecessary pressure where it wasn't warranted, after all.
But the other detail was a bit of a mixed blessing in disguise, at least for Skadi. While the webs would probably slow her down, the bit about the poisons was enough to make her quickly raise her hand and start talking - the second Petermon stopped, "Oh, Petermon, I- my Perfect-level can help handle those nasty bugs! I can resist any forms of toxins and poisons they can throw at me! I forgot to mention that!"
It wouldn't be like Skadi to reap a good opportunity when the situation arose. With a content chuckle, Kenny would just pat the Valaismon's head lightly. That kid (no pun intended) not only had moxie, but the spirit, to boot. Even if her professional skills were not exactly anything to write home about, at the end of the day, she still had a good head upon her body. And, to him at least, that was all that mattered.
Oh. Yeah. The mission. Kenny would give a nod towards the Petermon, "I... don't really have any more questions I can think of, sorry." He stated, "If at the very least, could you show us the way, please?" If one was paying attention, one could spot his eyes drifting onto where D'Arcmon took her leave. He could only sigh internally as thoughts raced through his head. One part of him just wanted to go off and comfort her briefly before he left.
The other part, keeping him put, at least encouraged him to give her some space.

Acidic venom. Such a substance sounds dangerous, but what's a bit of pain in a fight? That's what Levi thought, before admitting that no, it sounded very painful. Torturous, even, and if he could hazard a guess, that was exactly the point of it.
Paralytic venom. It sounded like the real trouble. Even with it being easily cured, would that be enough in the middle of a fight? Would it be enough to stop the spiders from creeping closer and finishing him off with a jab of acidic poison directly into his eye socket, melting his head from the inside, and dripping down through the rest of his body, eventually eating away at his very digicore?
Eh. Maybe.
"It sounds like they don't have any interest in killing their victims immediately," said Alan, arriving at that same "maybe". "In the analog world, creatures will kill others in ways most would deem cruel and unusual, but you couldn't really criticize them, since it was just how they ate. It makes me wonder... why go to all this trouble to prey on travelers, in this world where meat loved by almost every digimon I've met grows from the ground and on trees?" The boy blinked once. "That wasn't a question I expect you to answer, but I hope we can find an answer. No further questions. And, uh, get some sleep. I'm sure the den will find us, if everyone else here agrees." He gave the others glances to show he was deferring to them.

So Petermon's responses to Kenny's and Alan's questions did provide some useful information. There wasn't any gear that could be provided to the group as, unfortunately, some staff members were equipped with them when they went to go investigate before they were abducted as well, so the gear was lost. Petermon admitted that they weren't well-prepared for infestations like this, being tight on staff and money as most feral Digimon tended to be loners. "Perhaps these spider Digimon aren't feral at all then. I doubt feral Digimon would be working as coordinated as you say these spiders are, though I could be wrong."
And while they didn't know exactly what happened to the Digimon after they were dragged off, Petermon did reveal that the spiders did possess some poisonous abilities, primarily acidic and paralytic poisons, the latter of which could be undone by a healing ability. Even still, both of those sounded very dangerous. The Digimon that Hawkeye recognized from a previous endeavor, Skadi, would then speak up, saying her Perfect form was resistant to toxins and poisons. "I can fire my arrows from a distance away, so I could potentially avoid those kinds of attacks."
"But... does anyone here have a healing move?" Kaya piped up. If no one here could heal... well, then that would be a problem. "If Hawkeye and Levi got paralyzed, I don't know if Skadi could face against the spiders alone, you know?"
"If that is the case, the two of us would need to be extra careful to keep our distance."
It was then Alan who brought up an interesting point; why go through all this trouble for food in a world where meat grew on trees? It was then Hawkeye who spoke up once again. "Digimon are complex creatures, Alan. We're not all in it to just eat and survive. Some Digimon are incredibly devious, having some ulterior motive for what they do. Some Digimon... well, they just enjoy causing others misery, as simple as that may sound. I'm sure we'll find out the truth about these particular Digimon sooner rather than later."
It was definitely agreed by Kaya and Hawkeye that Petermon should definitely get some sleep soon here. They exchanged glances with Alan after he suggested the idea, the two quickly nodding in agreement before they turned to look at Petermon.

Hawkeye would comment on these spider digimon not being feral - to which Petermon would hum a little. "The Arukenimon we can confirm isn't a feral digimon; though we can't say for sure for the Dokugumon and Kodokugumon." He would mention, adding after a brief yawn "I can easily see the Arukenimon being the one calling the shots in all of this, and the Dokugumon and Kodokugumon are either their 'pets', or their underlings, depending on how sapient the spider digimon are."
At the talk of the poisons that the spider digimon were known to employ though, Petermon would nod; smiling a bit at Skadi mentioning her resistance to toxins, and Hawkeye being able to keep his distance. It was good to know that the people that were here were at least prepared. As Kaya voiced her concerns over the team becoming paralyzed though, Petermon's smile would become a little more strained - hoping that people did, indeed, have a way of treating the paralysis. The outpost had specified healing on the request, for a reason.
Alan raised a good point on food availability though - that food like meat was easy to find, without needing to actually hunt down other digimon. Hawkeye would have his own answers for it - which were indeed some of the reasons why these digimon were doing this. Petermon would also add his own two cents in though, explaining "And it's possible that the Dokugumon intend for their children to load these digimon; both as a source of sustenance, and as a way to expedite their growth. You all may have the bonds you share with your humans to trust in - though for those of us without partners, we only have a few options; natural growth through aging, by seeking out things like digimentals, or through fighting and loading other digimon."
"If you have a buffet of strong - but helpless - digimon provided to you by your parents, though... Loading is by far the safest way to grow stronger faster."
Both Levi and Alan, as well as Kaya and Hawkeye, would want Petermon to get some proper sleep though - whereas Kenny asked for Petermon to show the way to the den. Smiling gently, Petermon would take the time to chug down the rest of his coffee, before rising to his feet. "It's alright; I don't mind pointing you all in the right direction, 'specially now that I've had my coffee." He'd reassure the concerned foursome, before gesturing for the group to follow. "C'mon."
...
... Stepping out onto the road, it was once more obvious that there was a lack of any travelers; especially with the layers of undisturbed fallen leaves that would be scattered over the main road as the group began to move deeper in. There weren't even signs of any feral digimon having been through recently, or even the usual calls one might hear from the more vocal sorts of ferals; the forest having fallen under an unnatural and eerie silence...
"Keep your eyes and ears alert, folks. Stay aware of your surroundings, and each other." Petermon would warn, glancing back to the others. On either side of him, would be a couple of fellow rangers - the Logamon from before, and a moss-covered Guardromon. "If you hear or see anything strange, speak up - and if you feel like something's wrong, trust your instincts."
"We'll be guiding you as far as we feel is safe - but once we reach that threshold, you're all on your own." The Logamon would state in a strict tone, raising a claw to adjust his jacket around himself. "We're not able to digivolve any higher than this - so we won't last long if we're ambushed and dragged into combat - and the outpost can't afford to lose any more staff."
"As much as we'd love to help you fight, I don't think we'd be able to provide very much combat support..." The Guardromon - their voice surprisingly young-sounding - would murmur sadly. They would spend the trek gazing down at a map - likely to keep track of where they were - and occasionally glance up to peer over their surroundings. "Petermon told you all we know, so at this point, all we can provide is guidance..."
...
... And guide they would; the trip through the forest thankfully being uneventful, even if unsettling from the lack of other digimon to be found in the area. Deep into the woods they'd go - the trees growing taller, stronger, and thicker as they went; and the light similarly becoming more and more dim, from the thick canopy above. Eventually though, the trio of rangers would come to a stop when Guardromon piped up "I think we're close enough!" to their peers.
With that, the rangers would glance over to everyone assembled. "We'll be parting ways here." Petermon would murmur with a brief yawn, glancing in a direction off the road. "The den should be that way; you'll likely know it when you see it." He'd state as he gestured in the aforementioned direction. "D'arcmon described the entrance as the trees 'bending and overlapping one another, forming into a cavelike tunnel' - it'll likely look pretty unnatural, compared to everything else here."
"Do be safe!" The Guardromon would chirp - continuing "We don't want to see anyone else be lost to those mean spiders...!"
"As things are looking now, if you guys don't succeed, it's going to become a hell of an emergency..." The Logamon would add dryly - sighing heavily.
Briefly, Petermon would cast his peers a sympathetic glance - sharing in their own worries and exhaustion - before glancing back to the group, as the three of them would start making to move the other way, back towards the outpost. "Be careful, all of you; whatever fate's befalling those digimon in there..."
"... I have a feeling it isn't a pretty one."

Post by Kenny O'Hara and Skadi on Jan 7, 2021 6:03:57 GMT
Everyone was raising some good points and possibilities about the Archnemon clan so far, but Petermon's theory held a little too much water; plenty of Digimon were basically nothing more than feral beasts who had to fight and feed to survive in an unforgiving world, morality be damned. Kenny's eyes quietly shifted down to Skadi, followed by Hawkeye and Levi; to put it bluntly, they were the lucky ones. They didn't need to betray any morals or ethics just to survive. But with Archnemon and their cronies out in the wild, leaving them out to roam free was not an option.
The fact that Alan was now looking at him while suggesting that Petermon needed sleep did not help either; if anything, it left a nasty pit feeling in his gut. All he could do was sigh sadly, with a tinge of guilt and give a nod, as did Skadi. Simply put, Alan was right. And Petermon's health was just as important. Even when Petermon himself shrugged off the concerns and would start to lead the way, Kenny glanced over back to Alan, a guilty look quietly showing on his face.
---
Once again assuming her Canandemon form once more, Skadi would once again carry her tamer on her back, following the Petermon through the forest, feeling the crunch of the leaves through her hooves and the cold wind ruffling her wool. Not that it would either stop her or Kenny from heeding the words of the Guardromon and Logamon allies.
Taking in a good moment to breathe, Skadi would give a small nod towards the two Digimon, "I understand. Thank you." And needless to say, the eerie quiet looming over the forest did nothing to ease their nerves. But it was OK! They dealt with those crazy dangers before! They met up with Gods! They helped stop a coup in Shibuya! They took on mutant Digimon and were only very slightly traumatized by the experience! Of course a couple of insects wouldn't be much trouble for them!
...r-right?
Regardless, it'd only be a matter of time when the group would get to their 'stop', as indicated by Guardromon himself. Turning to face the other 3 Digimon, the duo would listen intently to what they'd have to say, but as Petermon continued, Kenny found himself clutching onto bits of Skadi's wool tightly, quietly breathing in and out for a few good moments, but as the Champion-levels turned to leave, he'd wave to them, "Thanks guys! We'll be back soon!"
"Don't worry about us!" Skadi was quick to add with a reassuring smile, "We'll be fine! Promise!"
Once out of sight, Kenny would sigh once more before turning to the other two tamers, clutching once again to Skadi's wool like a stress ball, "Alright guys, here we go. Anyone want to volunteer to help watch for any lost Digimon or potential threats from above?" He said, glancing over to the other two Digimon.
Once everything was good to go would then they'd move into the deep forest...

Alan heaved a sigh as it was explained to him why digimon do indeed have a reason to eat other digimon, other than for sustenance. He nodded in understanding. "...I see. Conditional mortality doesn't mean much for a being for whom that "condition" can be fulfilled suddenly and without warning... by others seeking to prevent their "conditions" from being fulfilled. Nature's just one big prisoner's dilemma, is what it comes down to. Like I said, this stuff happens all the time in the analog world, but it always felt less morbid since it was such an undeniable certainty. Here... I guess it's not a certainty, but what's the alternative? "Saving" feral digimon from other feral digimon?" The young man pinched the bridge of his nose and tapped his foot. "Bah, regardless of my unformed opinions on wildlife conservation, I know that whatever this is doesn't need to be happening, and I'll - we'll gladly fight to stop it."
Even while the walk to the wretched den of scum and villainy remained largely uneventful, the party was using this time to formulate stratagems on how they should proceed. Levi was hard at work deciding how good he was at being careful. Paranoid, yes, but methodical carefulness? Perhaps.
"Kenny, do you think you can ride backwards and watch our flanks for the duration of travel time? This mask limits my vision somewhat, but I also don't really wanna take it off, just in case, you feel me?"
Moments pass.
"Ooh! And I have another idea! How about each person in our group is responsible for making sure two other people are there, one of which is our partner, so that each person has two other people making sure they're still there and haven't been replaced by a body-snatcher, or a corpse-crawler, or something! We... might have to make a graph to be sure everyone's accounted for twice, though. Unless someone's better at keeping the configuration in their head than I am! Does that sound good, or nah, or are there any other ideas?"
